Amazing footage. The squirrel is able to run down the tree much faster and is confident enough to trash talk the bobcat. But the amount of energy and athleticism the bobcat puts into the hunt is also impressive and with no payoff. Life in the forest is tough.

This is by far some of the most amazing footage of cats I've ever seen. I live in NY and people are generally terrified of BobCats despite there never being any reports of attacks or anything like that. The size of this guy did amaze me though ! When he's vertical on that tree he looked like a Mountain Lion. I know the cops in Upstate NY get calls all the times of escaped Zoo lions and Mountain Lions creeping around and it's really only a Bobcat and like in this video, once they see a human they take off.

But even more shocking, the monkey trying to escape jumped off the tree and the leopard also jumped from a good 20 meters to the ground ! and immediately chased the monkey who couldn't escape any further.

Here's the extreme advantage that cagey little squirrel had over the bobcat. The bobcat was able to climb upward with lightning like speed but had to take it's time reversing it's course to come back down to regroup for another attack. The squirrel however can climb downward with it's face/head looking downward due to it's claws/ankles being able to rotate 180 degrees where it can grip the tree bark as though it was climbing upward as well. Cats are all great climbers going up but this is why you'll see a cat get stuck in a tree on occasion because they don't have that same mechanism in their claws a squirrel does. Cats might be king on the ground but squirrels rule the roost when it comes to scurrying around in a tree,, they can afford to laugh at anything trying to run them down in the climate they alone own. Squirrels own the tree line & can literally run a circle around anything foolish or hungry enough to try to catch them..

My personal experience with squirrels is that they are proud little creatures and that it indeed was savoring its victory over the cat. Squirrel are well practiced at chasing each other up and down trees at dizzying speed (they are the only creature to run down trees head first). The bobcat although surprisingly fast running up in a straight line is slow when it tries going round the tree bark and hopeless going down. But the squirrel biggest weakness is once they panic they make huge mistakes and that only works when they are ambushed. Once they are aware of the foe and calm down, and on the tree, they fear nobody except a hawk that will panic them. Once i jogged in the forest and squirrel runs almost into my feet from panic.

I love how in the very beginning the Bobcat was trying to charm the squirrel. It was doing that "Slow Blink" that domesticated cats do to be friends with another one. It's basically means, " it's Ok. I'm harmless. I just want to be friends ". Lol. I think that Bobcat was a lying ! What stood out for me in this video was the sound of it's sharp( & big) claws on the tree. We used to have a panther in our neighborhood when I was young. Whenever I stayed over night at my Grangmother's house, I would sleep in her bed. The bed was against the window next to her back porch. I could see it walking around at night because its eyes lite up at night. Especially if it was a full moon. At that time I was too young to realize what it was. I thought someone was walking around with 2 small flashlights. But I did know it was something I didn't want anything to do with ! My Dad was stalked by it one night when he had to close off gates in our pasture where the cows were when it was raining. He said it sounded like on like an old woman screaming. Him & my bothers went the next day & they found it tracks in the mud & it was circling my Dad. We never lost cows but we did find some dead calves.

about a month ago there were two squirrels, one chasing the other around and around a tree, but up side down and fast. this went on for approximately 20 minutes.
i was so fascinated by the way they stuck to that tree, as if they were on the ground.
it was effortless for them, and they were fast, and traveled around it in a screw pattern.
back and forth, un and down.
the one being chased was staying on the opposite side of the tree as the other kept chasing it. up and down that tree. facing upwards and down wards. it didn’t matter, they gripped the bark, and moved real fast.
that bobcat never had a chance.
two bobcats could catch one squirrel on one tree. they are too slow and sluggish compared to a squirrel.
    fun to watch though.
nice work with the camera btw.

This is the stuff people don't think cats have to do every single day to get food. They try everything over and over. Squirrels even seem to play with them or tease them. But I've never seen cats move so well on a tree. It moves almost as easily as a squirrel. Squirrels are basically the gymnasts of the forest and for anything to catch them is miraculous. Usually cat's just nap at the foot of trees and wait for a squirrel to come down and slip up.

It’s a tough life being a squirrel: bobcats, hawks, foxes, pine martins, and of course cars. They work and prepare so hard for the winter, bother no one, and they’re on so many other animals menus. Nice to see one win something (like their life) once in a while. Btw, I brake for squirrels.

There are bobcats in the not-too-far area. Like within 100 km. One fine day I was hiking along the trail. And i came around the corner and suddenly I was face-to-face with a bobcat. Less than 2 yards from him. Suddenly we were both embarrassed to be so close to "the other." I managed to take one step backwards. He managed to achieve Warp 12 and disappear into the undergrowth. Yes, I felt smug that my hiking was quiet enough to get this close to one. But then, he was smug becaue he had warp 7 built into his legs. He left so quickly that there were definite relativistic effects.
Is there any way I can get the bobcats to come to my backyard and eat the squirrels? That would be very good.

"Bobcat Chasing a Squirrel is one of the more underrated films of the year. It's a story of perseverance between a predator and prey, two natural enemies engaging in a struggle to survive, one through satiating a need to nourish, the other the instinct to stay alive. Both lead characters appear to be tacticians. One centers its life on the hunt, the other fancies about in an elusive, antagonistic, yet gregarious manner. This magnificently filmed masterpiece is a cimematic example of the winner being the loser and the winner being the loser"

If you watch male squirrels chasing females on ground or just like this round and round and up and down trees or utility poles you see the same apparent success rate but you also see plenty of squirrels - the youngsters too - so some ladies eventually are caught and litters result. And so predators meals are there among even those many misses.

@@Don.Challenger Squirrels are pretty stupid as animals go though. They seem to be born to die on purpose so there'd be enough protein to go around for the carnivores. Based upon that it's my considered opinion that squirrels aren't a typical prey animal. I know the coyotes and others around here depend on them quite a bit.

Awesome footage! Thanks for sharing it.
I have a domestic house cat that was born in the wild and whom I literally plucked off a tree limb and brought home when she was a young baby kitten. She grew up on my 20 acres as a farm cat and probably has climbed nearly every tree in my forest. As a young cat she was fearless, strong, and hated squirrels with a passion. She could run up and down a tree nearly as well as a squirrel.
One night I got to witness a similar epic battler between her and a young flying squirrel. She had already managed to catch the flying squirrel and had it on the ground when I found her with it. When I arrived it distracted her enough so that the flying squirrel slipped out from under her paw pinning it down and immediately headed for a nearby elm tree. It probably was already exhausted from fighting with the cat to get free as it only ran up the tree trunk about 8 feet and stopped.
My cat immediately zipped after it, running right up the tree trunk and batting the squirrel off the trunk with her paw. As soon as the squirrel fell to the ground, my cat jumped off the tree down to the ground right behind it. This squirrel had no idea a cat could run right up a tree and literally knock it off the tree trunk. I'm sure the squirrel had a new found respect for cats after that.
Naturally, once the squirrel hit the ground, it ran right back up the tree trunk, this time going up about 15 feet before stopping. My cat continued the chase, going right back up the tree trunk herself.
The squirrel was faster obviously but my cat was surprisingly quick up the tree too, as she badly wanted to recapture her prize. This time, the squirrel dodged the cat by jumping over to another part of the tree trunk about three feet away. The squirrel clearly thought this would end the chase but my cat never broke her stride. Instead she just leaped across the gap too and grabbed the next tree trunk to continue the chase.
This squirrel was shocked to learn that this cat was able to follow it right up any tree it chose to climb, even jumping across from tree trunk to trunk. My cat tried to bat the squirrel off the tree once more but missed it. This caused the squirrel to take a more sensible evasive maneuver of climbing as high as it possibly could go in the tree. Once it reached a small enough limb that would not support my cat, she broke off the chase and eventually backed down from the tree.
Had I not seen all this transpire, I never would have believed it. But it truly happened. If a feline wants to do so bad enough and puts its mind to it, a squirrel just might be caught off guard enough by the cat's surprising tree climbing ability to be hit by a cat's paw. If the cat gets a set of claws into the squirrel, the chase might just be over for the squirrel.

I love that you kept score! Cats can climb up a tree fast, it’s the getting down that they find tricky. If the squirrel would stop chattering it could’ve been over quicker, needs to learn stealth mode. It did sound like it was laughing at Bob.

Shane Cormier just to be clear Bobcats won’t chase people. They aren’t aggressive - they are actually very timid. We have them in our backyard and if they know a human is around they leave immediately. I have seen videos where they mistake a person for some kind of much smaller prey and will run at a person but they stop as soon as they understand. Just like this video, he snuck away real quietly when he saw the human in the tree.
