She wrote this at the end of a studio session in under an hour , at 13, she is performing this on the rooftop of MTV at 14.
No writers- just Grace, wrote, arranged and sang this original. She is now 19 and has a solid following.
Grace is now 19 years old and she started her singing career at age 12 when she won America's got Talent singing all originals. She has done a tour with Imagine Dragons and solo tours. She has been very active on the music scene appearing on numerous late night shows and was on the edge of a major tour when Covid hit and it was put on hold. She never stopped writing and performed from her room on Instagram and so far has about 50 original songs under her belt but a lot of them will never see the light of day because she keeps changing her style and is evolving so quickly that she is leaving even her own songs behind. She does amazing covers as well and makes them her own. She is a fashion model as well as an actress, appearing as the lead actress in the Stargirl movies on the Disney Channel. She just wrapped up appearing in a Francis Ford Coppola and is at this time performing in small venues to get her singing chops back again. As she's aging her singing voice has become more deep and rich. Thank you for your reaction. Just so you know, she this is her original. She writes and composes all her songs! She won the 2016 season of America's Got Talent at age 12 performing only her originals every round.
Grace has written a lot of songs and has a growing catalog of songs that she has also produced. But She also sings amazing covers, making them better than the originals.
I saw Grace for the first time on UA-cam when I just happened to watch the 10 greatest auditions in AGT history, was curious as I never watch those shows. I was absolutely blown away by a 12 year old who wrote 'I Don't Know My Name'. I watched a kid who sounded older than 12, with lyrics that a 12 year old shouldn't be able to write. My wife and I must have watched that video 20 times. We ended up watching all her performances and was hooked. I think the kid is just amazing, she has this ability to put lyrics to paper that tell a story, that you want to listen to her. Her greatest gift might be her ability to sing just about any type of song from jazz, to blues, to rock, to punk, ballads with ease. I just see an artist who will be constantly evolving throughout her career, I listen to your channel a lot I hope you continue to critique Grace, a true artist. Her fans are loyal, thanks again

At age 12, Grace auditioned for America's Got Talent with an original song "I Don't Know My Name". The crowd and judges loved it and Howie Mendel gave her the golden buzzer. She went on and performed three more original songs and won. All through out the experience, the AGT people were telling her she should do this or that, but Grace stayed true to herself and did it her way. After a session in the recording studio, she wrote this song. Obviously, they were telling her to do this or that and she was tempted to stray from staying true to herself, so she quickly wrote this song.
Thank you for the excellent reaction to this genius song writer, i have been in awe of every thing she has written, she started to compose songs in her head at age 3, she started her career by posting cover songs on U-TUBE at 11 years old, many of the artist she covered reacted to her covers and would love for her to join them on colaboration, simply put they love her voice. She have sang in so many diffwrant genres with well known artists from Cyndy Lauper, Jasen Mraz, Imagin Dragons on there world tour, which she opened for on the US tour, Florence and the Machine opener, Austin City Limits, opening and closing the Special Olypicshe with Mraz, she is the youngest artist to have a signiture instument by FENDER, a ukulele two made with the well known head stock of Fender, her awards are so maney you have to look them up, to many in this post, Grace was born to do this, her voice is so originally recognized as Grace Avery Vanderwaal, prodigy. She wrote this song at 13 on a break from her studio recording in a half hour. I would say that the artist's great differential is the great potential in composing, she writes very well since her childhood. At age 12, she won the AGT in 2016 with 4 songs of her own, her work is beautiful, she is incredible!

Hey MRBOYD, the watermark effect is brilliant. Great that you found Grace. You were impressed by pre-teen girls doing covers now feast you ears on a little girl that does her own songs. This one she wrote by her little lonesome while on a break from a recording session. 13 years old you say! Well she wrote a bunch more when she was 12 and the one she is famed for at 11 years old.
OOOOOH! I never thought about the "sky light" as being the light from Heaven. Good one.
Her sister was suffering from depression. This girl is brilliant, she said in a few interviews that "these are not my experiences" she picks her subject matter from places like movies and such. I don't think she was depressed at all, I think she's a real good actress in the song writing profession. Some pictures of her in the studio jumping around and having fun let's her fan base know she had a good time recording her album.
No one really knows what the other writers added to this song other than tweeking it here and there since she stated she wrote the entire song by herself in 20 minutes while spending some time away from the recording crew.

It was a good summer for Grace with lots of Angelina Jordan reactioners taking a quick look at Grace before going back to their usual. Should be interesting after the movie comes out if she is in demand for her modelling or her music, hopefully both.

Just the worst. His quotes: “I have know idea what the original sounds like”? WTH! “How did the writers, maybe that’s what the writers did, they put that in there for that very specific thing. Feels like it”? WTH! How can he react assuming someone else wrote the song?!! Part of his analyzation was referencing the original writers assuming she didn’t write it. Such a quick and simple thing to find out before reacting. And it would have made his reaction completely different and more authentic. He ripped himself off not knowing that ahead of time. As part of his audience, all I could think of the entire way through is how much of a bummer it was that he didn’t know that. What a shame! Don’t mean to be mean, but someone had to say it

@@tomsmith7429 There must be a fair way to determine royalty splits and probably a way to find out. But that is above my pay grade.
Yes that is accurate Lunar but since we know the story of the beginnings of this song and by law you have to give credit to any and all assistance you get in the recording studio. I'm sure Micah is quite proud of little suggestions Grace took from her like "how about adding one more 'oooooh"
We have seen many times on Instagram and Tiktok where Grace has come up with a new song and once it got to the studio a few names seemed to appear in the writing credits even though the lyrics hadn't really change since the live recording.

Your bold and true reaction to Grace's "Darkness" deserves our support. Here's mine: "Ur So Beautiful" performed by Grace at a benefit for the Trevor Project, a suicide hotline. (Best sound is Sam Borgman's copy, start at 0:48). It as a message to self, encouraging us to like ourselves. But when she sings the same song to open her concerts, or in the studio, it is an upbeat celebration of the beauty of her lover! Same words and music, different message: that is one very talented and thoughtful young woman.
I not sure I got this right. You think that the way Grace sings a song is a hint to her fans that she's suicidal? She sang Ur So Beautiful at the Trevor Project in a slow Jazz genre but you think the slow version means she's not talking about a person she knows who may not be very confident and has a crush on her but that she's trying to convince herself not to end it all? Almost 7 years after she wrote the song he thinks she's suicidal.
The writers? No. Grace makes her music and writes her own lyrics. No one does it for her. In the section where she sings, "When I call you," in the original, she does sing "I might cry." If you take notice of the guitarist she starred at Grace because she left out the word, "Cry." Just to let you know.
Just like Blondie, Grace can be very confusing.
