      Hey Trey, that's wonderful news. I have realized that the issue of some people's trunks not opening has to do with the weather - hot weather = trunk opens fine with new struts, whereas, cold weather = trunk doesn't want to open automatically.

    I was reliably informed that the XF boot is not designed to do that. Hence why mine and all the others I've seen don't. But it's good to know changing the struts will do it. My XE did however do this from the start. Perhaps it's a model thing. Nice job.

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  6 років тому +1

      I believe it could be a combination of me lubing all the hinge joints with some oil and having replaced the little springs as well as the struts that gave me this great result.

    • @Richie5903
      @Richie5903 6 років тому

      All XF's are supposed to do this , its a common fault and over time they end up not opening all the way as they should do. Mine used to do it but as the car has aged it has opened less and less and now just pops open a crack when pressing the button. Your informer needs the sack lol.
      Your XE does it im sure either because its new or because they have learned from earlier design issues.
      For instance the newer XF's no longer have motorised opening and closing air vents as a common issue cropped up where 1 or more vents would either fail to open or make an awful noise.

    • @Martino-007
      @Martino-007 6 років тому +1

      Richie5903 Info came from Jaguar. I've been on a few forums and they say the same, however some have said theirs did do it. Perhaps they were lucky. Mine has a spoiler so maybe the extra weight wouldn't allow it anyway. It's a MY2017 so not that old for gas struts to go. Many that do have this opening boot have done what Hilton did, so looks like I'll need to do that. I have the far left and right motorised vents with no issues.

      @carfanfan  6 років тому

      Hey Daniel, try using some sewing machine oil on all the hinges. Crud builds up in them after a while and causes them not to move as smoothly. I oil mine regularly. Also, I replaced my lift sprints prior to doing this thinking that was the reason for my trunk not opening properly, so strong springs may also have had an effect. The standard eject force is 425nm, but if you can have a set made for you with 475nm, that will definitely do the trick. Some companies on eBay offer that service.

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  5 років тому

      Hey Keith, your trunk is probably out of alignment since you tightened the loose hinge (probably out of alignment due to the loose hinge in the first place) - check the near and far side gaps if you can close the trunk manually, to see where the gap is bigger and also where the hinge itself is located to see the "old" mark of where the hinge was situated before it became loose and tightened again - those marks will tell you where the hinge should be positioned - I'm pretty sure it will work fine again once you align it properly.

    Hey Hilton, just came across this video. I was wondering if the struts on my Jaguar were old/faulty/weak, though the dealership confirmed saying they are not meant to open the trunk lid automatically. Is that true as per your knowledge? Secondly, do these struts work is combination with changing the springs or just on their own. In other words, are these after market struts more pressured than OEM XF struts?

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  6 років тому +1

      Zereldo Zai Hey Zereldo, actually the trunk was designed to open automatically. That's why it has the little springs. Some have had mixed results just changing the struts with success and some with no success as you see from the comments here. I replaced my aftermarket struts with Jaguar ones as they kept popping off and the Jaguar ones are working just as good. It could also be due me having changed the springs previously which wasn't easy but do-able. I'd recommend changing the struts with genuine ones first then the springs if it still won't pop. Mine is still working great even in winter here 😁

    • @ZereldoZai
      @ZereldoZai 6 років тому

      Hilton Brilliant, thanks for the reply. Did you replace them with your old OEM struts or bought a new set from Jaguar? I'll have to educate my service manager as he is hell bent on convincing me otherwise about all the tiny faults I've pointed out in my car. "That is how it was intended" from exhaust pipes being asymmetrical to headlight beams pointing far too low for them to be any good at night.

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  6 років тому

      Zereldo Zai I fitted brand new struts from my dealer. Many times the dealer actually doesn't know much about the car especially if their service manager wasn't around when the car was first launched. They don't know that new ones opened properly.

    Do you have any tips to adjust the open mechanism? My gas struts are too powerful and the trunk opens normally first but shoots up in the end of the open mechanism... greetings from Germany!

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Marius. Hope you are doing well in Germany under lockdown 😊. If the trunk is opening too violently, you can add some rubber damping to the stop mechanism. If you watch my video "Jaguar did design the XF trunk to open automatically" I explain how this mechanism works. I installed a screw to make mine open with more force, but to prevent it hitting that little stopper with a noise, you can stick little rubber pads that are used for under the legs of coffee tables or chairs to absorb the inertia of the opening trunk.

    What is the average temperature of your place? I heard temperatures may affect the gas struts performance. I might buy a set and uprate the eject force so that there will be more power to lift the tailgate, just not sure exactly how much more....

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  6 років тому +1

      Right now its summer here, so between 22-32 degrees celcius. But today its cold, 17 degrees and trunk still opens fine. I would recommend oiling the hinges with some oil and perhaps the fact that I changed my little trunk springs last year (thinking that would fix it) has something to do with it too.
      The standard eject force of the Jaguar XF is about 375nm and uprated one's are usually 425nm. Try this site in the UK for one's that are identical but stronger. These fit beautifully with small heads like the XF's original equipment. The eBay one's were difficult to fit because they're actually bigger at the ends.

    • @IzanAzman948
      @IzanAzman948 6 років тому

      Hilton hello, i still have not purchased replacement struts as i am still unsure of what eject force i would need. The temperature at my place is about 27c - 34c. Can you recommend an eject force? 425n might be too much for our warm temperature, wouldnt want it to look artificially quick when opening and wouldnt want to damage the soft close function. I need it to open gracefully as if it came from the factory as standard. Thanks

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  6 років тому

      Hey Izan - I'd recommend 425n actually. Mine are the standard 375n struts and they struggle when the car has been standing in the cold even if the weather has already gotten warmer. I've noticed, after the initial open, the trunk will open fine again after being in the cold, but I'd highly recommend the 425n eject force as this will work without fail cold or hot and it isn't really enough to cause any damage to your trunk or hinges. Any higher than 430 would be overkill even in cold weather.

  • @iovaninpapace
    @iovaninpapace 4 роки тому

    hello Hilton, so you just need to change the pistons to open the trunk or do you even have to pierce it with the two screws? Hello and thanks! I'm sorry but I don't understand English well ...

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan  4 роки тому

      Hey there. I would suggest doing the two screws modification first before replacing your struts. You can then set the screws to the intensity you need to get that trunk to pop up. If it still won't work, then it means your struts are worn and need replacing. But the screws are a cheaper solution, so first try that ;-)

    Which gas struts you used?

      Can't remember the ones from the video, but you will see the name on the vid if you watch it. I subsequently went and got a pair of genuine Jaguar struts to see if they would work just as well and they did, so I left them on my car now.
      The one's in the video don't really fit too well and are difficult to get on as you can see, but the genuine ones are easier to fit and work just as well.

      I have genuine ones but they open 50% only on warm days fully... Maybe its time to replace them :)

    Could you somehow look at the auto stop start? I have a perfectly working battery, electrics seem fine but I have a fault on the dash saying "auto stop start fault".

      It's 99% the battery. Ifbthe battery is older than 4 years, replace it where or not you're getting a good reading. Remember that system has its own battery and it works hard.

      @@AndyMartin401 it's part of the instrument cluster. You will most likely have to replace the entire cluster to fix this error. The seat belt warning also forms part of this. It's all synthesized from the cluster module.

      @carfanfan  3 роки тому

      Hey Paul. Release the hard key from the fob by pressing the little button on the side close to the hard key. By the license plate lights, you will find a rubber grommet. Remove it and insert the key into it to open the trunk. Hope this helps.

    Hey Hilton my dad pointed this video out to me. This cheap option might do the trick to. ua-cam.com/video/ux9H5QdTtjA/v-deo.html
    There are more vids like that one but that one explains well. This might help other jag owners. He is gonna try this in the weekend and ill keep you updated. Would be a nice cheap option😁.

      @carfanfan  6 років тому

      Hey Wendell, thanks for this. I haven't seen this video, but it certainly makes sense to put more pressure on the lift springs as they are what pull the trunk up, but if your gas struts are not strong or worn out, they still might need replacing. Mine has been working well, but I think its also because I replaced my lift springs last year thinking that would fix it, but doing the gas struts helped a great deal after that. Good luck and let us all know how it goes ;)
