The cheese weighs around 8 lb and rolls down at a speed of 70 miles/hour. If you like this watch The Atherstone Football Game (I suggest a history of it just in case UA-cam would ban it - there is violence in it) and Tar Barrel Run at Ottery St Mary. Possible only in the UK. :)
I used to live in Gloucestershire, and once watched the Cheese-Rolling from a friend's garden in Brockworth. The authorities have tried to ban it; the biggest worry may not be for the participants, but for the spectators; a crowd on a steep slope can be dangerous. But the authorities haven't a hope in hell of stopping it, because it has been going on for so long. 1826 is only the first written mention, but the Rolling may be centuries older. It may have had to do with competition for grazing rights, but it may go back further, to pagan times, with the cheese representing the Sun. (In Gloucestershire nothing would surprise me...) Much drinking goes on - particularly of the local (very hard) cider... It's the local rugby team who catch people at the bottom.
Aye. Apparently the police told the cheese-monger he could be sued if anyone got hurt chasing his cheese and his response was essentially, "I'm a cheese-monger. I don't do background checks." Cops did show up one year to turn people away but there were only a dozen country bobbies and several hundred just politely walked around them. I don't think their hearts were in it; local lads.
It's not for cheese, although it is triggered by cheese. It's competition, the healthy and organised expression of competition. Try bog snorkeling, nettle eating, shin kicking, burning barrel carrying, the Atherton football game. The event is more than it's perceived reason. Why do Americans see injury everywhere, yes there'll be a few minor injuries, it's a sport, an activity. Americans see this and immediately think about concussion... People are resilient, they can do a lot and this is how you test yourself. Drop the pads in your football and experience real sport and activity... Risk is a part of life, the more you avoid it the more you fear it.
Would you compete in this?

Absolutely. Unfortunately my chronically ill, disabled ass wouldn't even be able to climb the hill to get to the rolling part XD
