Thank you so much for posting this video. In the late 80's, I was inspired (understatement!) by my extensive readings of Ansel Adams life, to travel (from the UK) to Yosemite in 1991, to attempt this route to the diving board, but during the climb, I was soon struck with the realisation that I would probably not be able to get back down the same route, and (stupidly) having not told anyone of my intentions, I backed out of the attempt. I was 31 years old then, but I am due to visit Yosemite again in May of next year (34 years on), but any sort of climb would be completely out of the question for me now....sadly. I am very envious of your achievment and also very grateful to you for documenting your climb for us all.
Great tour of an area I have not been to. Lived in camp 4 in 1972 for a year and did a lot of the big walls. Climbed with legends in the climbing world. Best year of my life living with almost no money. Scarfed the cafeteria for food.
Found your business card at the gas station in Ahwahnee beside the Hitching Post restaurant and took a picture of it. Left it there for others to discover. Great video.
Def. Class 4 up to Grizz. Peak! from...old time climbing dude who lived / worked & climbed in The Valley. GREAT vid!! Wish I could do that route!! THNX
Rest in peace. I appreciated your videos and your friendship for the time I’ve known you. I know your spirit will still be out here hiking these mountains until these domes crumble to sand. I hope you find peace in the journey, bro.
@ Yes. Car accident :( CHP still hasn’t released the report, but from what I know - his vehicle went off the road in between the town he lived in and Yosemite.
I’ve seen several videos hiking to the diving board but I think this is the only one via the LeConte gully. Knarly to say the least. Stay safe out there my friend! I hope to get to the diving board someday via the standard route you explained. Love Yosemite!
Your channel is my absolute favourite on UA-cam. Me and my buddy went up to Vernal Falls a couple months ago. While up there I was wondering if those peaks were able to be climbed and there you were in the video! I plan on doing the "Ledge Trail" next year with the same buddy. Keep making these amazing videos brother.
I've wondered about the viability of this route many times - thanks for the video! Other than the last pitch up to Grizzly Peak, the parts of this route that you showed actually looked less sketchy than the other route via snake dike. I haven't hiked either, and likely never will (my ankles just won't tolerate that much camber anymore), but it's still thrilling to get a glimpse of what it's like.
Beautiful video and hike. You make it seem so effortless. My discomfort with height exposure puts this sort of thing outside my abilities, but I enjoy watching folks who aren’t so affected.
What a great video. I really want to do that shortcut route to the dive board but I had a spinal injury in a car crash. I was trying to do that route in 2021. My prayer is to be able to do it 2025. 🙏🙏🙏 Thank you for such beauty. That moment where you filmed yourself on the dive board from across the valley was just magical. I can’t wait to mend to attempt this in 2025. Your photography is out of this world. 🫶 M
Coincidently, I was exploring the possibilities of this hike on Google Earth last week. We hiked to Sierra Point and the Diving Board last month over two days and was wondering if the diving board could be approached with this route. Thanks for posting this!
I was also inspired by the Adam's description. My wife and I tried 25 years ago and got denied at a large polished wall section in the gully. We attempted to find a route through the trees and slabs but it got way too sketchy. We retreated mainly because the polished wall would have been too hard to down climb if we had to abandon the route higher up. Highly recommend an early start for this challenging route. Bring a friend too.
great video! good to point out the risk of going down... it would seem wise to not go up something that should not be gone down... for the same risks. But each person has to take the risk the are comfortable with. There is a "hike" like this down in Forest Falls CA, but without the view. One wrong move and it's 1000ft drop...
www.alltrails.com/explore/recording/morning-hike-2734484-238?p=-1&sh=fuyuh1 This doesn’t include the full decent on Yosemite falls but that shouldn’t matter
Have you done the North Dome gully route. Another good one. Also, the climbers approach to the face of Half Dome from Mirror Lake . I will be in Grand Canyon for fffal the
@@yosemite-tv I was wondering if there was a doable shortcut. Great video. I did the full trip last September with my wife and it took about 14 hours….we were taking our time, but definitely a long day.
Very nice. On my bucket list now :) Haven’t done top of half dome yet either. How does it compare in terms of difficulty? I imagine it’s much shorter in time as well? Did you bring much water?
my "shortcut" to HD was to go between Liberty Cap and Mt. Broderick. and sumit Liberty Cap along the way. ...and I ate a brick of uncooked ramen that day.
@@yosemite-tv the backside is a walkup. Nice view of Nevada falls, snake dike, clouds rest... Pretty wide summit with a sheer drop on the climbing side. I think Mt. Broderick is more technical.
A tough enough climb without having to constantly go back down to retrieve your camera and do it again. Or did you use a drone which I guess technically would be illegal so maybe just don't answer that question. Great cinematography either way. Thanks for sharing it.
Thank you for documenting this - awesome video. Do you have a silent hiking/filming partner, or did you have to do those climbs at the beginning twice? 😅
Yosemite means "they come to kill" I think we need to have more respect for our Native Americans from California and the Northern Americas. As a native my self it's hard to see all the trash left in mountains and a long the shorelines of higher level lakes. 3:35
Kinda. I mean, technically Yosemite doesn’t mean anything, and is just a word made up by Lafayette Bunnell. But the two words he used (yohhemeti - “they are killers,” isimiti - “great bear” (uzumahti variant)) mashed together would technically mean “they are killers” using the primary word yohhemite for the translation, though Lafayette believed his word to be a better version of uzumahti than any native variant, intending for it to mean “great bear/grizzly.”

While you are here, rent a Jeep and explore Death Valley. Visit Charles Manson's old hideout. I could recommend dozens of places to visit..
Phew man that one had me puckered. Good video. Love this channel so much
Thanks 👍
Wow! You keep outdoing yourself. Both in your hikes, and your videography.
Thanks, I’m trying to improve just a little bit every time I post. Thanks for watching

You should!

Yeah just a smidge of class 4 to round out the day. The summit to grizzly is only about a 10 minute climb from the top of leconte gully. Easy peasy

That’s so terrible. This guy’s videos inspired me to do some of the hikes he did. I was hoping to meet him eventually.

What a fun adventure! I'll be in Yosemite next week and am going to find your Fern Ledge route :-D

Your better off exploring the high country

So sick great video chief can’t wait to go next year
Good luck
Sorry you're 'sick'(ha!) Be well! Any/everything in Yosemite is amazing!
So sick man!
Thanks 🙏
There is also a cutoff between Mt Broderick and Liberty Cap, too.
Like a wide sidewalk, so cool. There was an aspen with bear claw marks on it. Was it still there when you went?
Is that going up or coming down?

Yikes! Did those younger; multiple head-injuries later, balance too poor. But video is great! Hiked there as a teen; words fall short!
💯💯 ima try your route….

I wonder if you could program a drone to follow you …might save your knees in the long run ! Anyway I loved the video as always!
I could but drones are prohibited in Yosemite

3.8 miles up 3800 ‘ of gain

It’s a much shorter hike than the half dome hike. There’s no actual trail either so it’s a much different experience. Do half dome first

Do you prefer this route vs the standard one to the Diving Board? So the LeConte gully makes this the tougher route?
LeConte is shorter but harder I assume.

Is the hiker also the videographer - a Lone Wolf who 'doubles-back' on sections of the hike??🤔
He was on this episode
