    Another enjoyable update. By the time you're done with the body panels you'll be an expert.

      I doubt it! By then I will have had enough and will never do it again maybe! Although a friend keeps threatening me with an Austin 7 Chummy project to restore.

    Golfs are quite nice and reasonably reliable. Handy if you can have a towbar on it so you can take the riley or bikes on a trailer 👍🏻 Golfs are popular in the UK as well as the Audi A3 which is the same size. Nice cars 😎

      They seem pretty common here too.

    I think that the progenitor of any marque is the one to go for. (XK120 or XK150 ? )
    The Mk1 Golf is a light,practical and very entertaining little car, with none of the frills of the later versions. Also, an exciting way to discover the joy of FWD traction limits when no one is watching!

      I think the only Mk1 I have seen recently is twice my budget. They are in that 'collectors' space now I think.

    I ran VW Polos for many years as I didn't need the extra size of the Golf, but they all gave excellent service. I think that a Golf without too many modern gizmos would be a sound choice. I have some old Meccano, but I think that shipping to New Zealand would be prohibitive. Best wishes.

      I definitely replied to this before I am sure! UA-cam loses comments sometimes. Shipping Meccano even in NZ is expensive let alone overseas. The nature of a solid, metal toy I guess. It's heavy.

    You need an Audi a2 1.4 tai, cheap to run aluminium body and removable rear seats. Great little cars.

      I don't think we got those in NZ. I searched and they just doing show up. Lots of other As and Qs and RSs but no A2s.

    Mid 60s Hillman Husky with a rootes 1725 overdrive would be good.
    Great looks
    Reliable
    Load space

      I don't think I have seen one of the for sales here before but I wasn't specifically looking of course. Older cars seem to show up less and less now. I do often look at cars from 1900 say to 1970 to see what's about but nothing jumps out. I did always like the Farina A40s.

    RM Riley, restored is in that budget, Morris Isis or Morrie 1000 Woody, Mitsi Hi Ace,; all useful in the countryside and basic in maintenance.

      You're not the person selling an RME in Nelson are you! There are always a few Morris 1100s and Minis of course. Not sure I have seen an Isis before.

    Hi Simon I have a Golf Mk5 as my daily drive and I would recomend a TDI very cheacp to run and enjoyable to drive You might prefer the Mk7 a bit newerpos less miles but both goog practical cars.And they are well made.

      @asciimation  6 місяців тому

      @@russellnixon9981 Yep, I try to find out things like that so I know what to look for/ask. That Megane that showed up should have had the belt done twice already the mileage it was on! I prefer more mechanical/simpler cars so not into overly modern. I did see this which is a Mk3, low mileage but the price seems high? Of course NZ prices won't match UK ones very well. Exchange rate is about 2$ to the pound I think. www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/volkswagen/golf/listing/4739532228

    Thanks for sharing, highly appreciated. I am starting my own pre war car soon, and I can get a hold of 2mm plates in aluminium. What thickness are you using? Sorry if you have explained this already and I missed it😊

      No apology needed. I use 1.6mm H5005 half hard. We're limited to what we can get here in NZ unfortunately. For the undertray/floor of the car I used 2mm.

    Give some thought to the Mark One Golf (not the GTI) .

      I don't need a fast car in particular. The way I see it there will always be a car faster. Most people seem to only go fast on straight roads or motorways. As soon as you get to bends they slow down too much so on a windy road even a 'slow' car can keep up if you maintain your speed and corner smoothly. See it in the MGB all the time. Windy roads few keep right up behind you but as soon as you get to the straight they have to go screaming past to not be stuck behind a 'slow old' car.

      There are a lot of VWs of all types. I need to do some more research on them to know what's what and what good prices are. There is a low mileage Mk3 near me but it seems a highish price. Or rather you could get something else or more modern for the same money: www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/volkswagen/golf/listing/4739532228

    Hi id get a mini clubman ok have fun

    • @asciimation
      @asciimation  6 місяців тому +1

      Minis are still reasonably common here actually. But I would have to maintain it and I don't really want that even through I know it's not that hard. If I ever restored a more modern car (more modern than vintage I mean) with normal and easy sheet metal welding, easy access to parts, great scope for 'hotting up' none of this hand forming ali and gas welding business, a Mini would be high on my list!

      @@roberthill9011 Ah, I didn't realise you mean the new ones sorry! Yes, those are fairly common here too. I've never been a fan to be honest. And I wish companies wouldn't reuse names of things so much to cash in on nostalgia. Makes it hard to find information on things when you start having to specify what era of thing you mean.
