    I was honestly impressed with the mechanical drive boot.

  • @Zoolookuk
    @Zoolookuk 8 років тому +65

    The reason it is booting more slowly is that it hasn't finished indexing. After a fresh install, you need to leave it on for about 30 - 40 mins to fully index. Then it should boot faster.

    The reason the SSD and the mechanical HDD had about the same boot time is simply because the internal data bus runs at the same speed. So even though you have two completely different drives, they are basically being bottlenecked by the machine itself. At least, that's what I assume is happening.

    • @Mooseguy15

      Mark Woodworth That'snot true. apparently theres an update you have to do that optimizes it. I think it's only in leopard though.

      Leopard was the first version of Mac OS X that took into account SSD's and even then it was very basic. It was not until Snow Leopard until Apple started talking them seriously

    The reason for the little gain in boot time is due to the old SATA interface. You will see gains in random reads and writes tho.

    Sherlock needs to file stuff in the background. That's what was slowing it down. This is still a problem with Macs to this day, but once Sherlock, or spotlight finishes indexing those files then the Hard drive runs at its full potential.

    Concerning the 2012 and newer models, I'd definitely say that 21.5" iMacs are herendous to get the RAM out. The 27" don't require any special tools, just something to push the latch to unlock the cover, however that's the only thing that can be easily upgraded on the 27" iMac. For the HDD you need to take off adhesive and put it back on.

    The SSD is not going to improve the Bootup time by much, because the Strength of SSDs which is Random Reads/Writes is not coming into play here.
    OSX actually aligns the Files needed to Boot the System on HDDs so that they can be read in (almost) one go sequentially without many random reads.
    So the HDD will reach its full read speed, which is close to the limit by the Sata cable, so the SSD can not be any faster.

    I don't really buy the "We had to get rid of expand-ability in order to make it thinner" argument that Apple makes nowadays when they used to have such elegant ways of opening up their computers. I don't see why a mechanism like the iMac G5's wouldn't work on today's iMacs.

    One thing that is probably keeping your start times about equal on both SSD and HDD is the speed and/or capacity of the RAM.

    The newer 21.5in iMacs are the hard to change RAM machines, and now they're soldered on like the MacBooks. But the 27in model still has easy to change RAM, it has a little cover that oops open on the back.

    Only the 21.5" 2012 and newer models made it harder to upgrade the RAM. On the 2012 and newer 27", you don't even have to unscrew any screws to open the access door on the back.
    That being said, everything else is harder to get to on those models.

    Considering you have an SSD on it then try getting copy of Lubuntu running on it since Lubuntu is light weight that should prove the SSD's speed

    • @DanceDanceNorth
      @DanceDanceNorth 7 років тому

      Ubuntu should work just fine on a G5. I would only consider Lubuntu on a G3 or G4, and even then, a G4 slower than 1 GHz or the RAM inferior to 1 GB.
      In any case, I would still keep Tiger (G3) or Leopard (G4/G5) and run Ubuntu as a secondary OS.

      It will generally speed up performance either way. A hard drive will be shittons slower than an ssd, and differences can be noted even on sata 1

    • @narwhal4304
      @narwhal4304 5 років тому

      With how old the machine, and thus the hard drive is, I'd still take an SSD so I can assure that the drive is less likely to fail.

    Hi, cool video !
    But you should try with a installation of 10.5.8, which is the latest OSX available for ppc Macs.
    Also, if you search, there's an image with ppc-only binaries.
    10.5 afaik, has "dual binaries", with x86 and ppc. So this guy removed the x86 part of the binaries,
    and the system becomes much lighter. Try that too.

    The issue is OpenFirmware, not the SSD. OpenFirmware (replaced by EFI in Intel Macs) was designed *long* before SSDs were even an option. It's effectively the same Firmware that the original iMac in 1998 used.

      +Richard Stifle It's actually a 5400RPM drive, but they perform amazingly well despite it, I have the exact same model from the same year and Windows 7 would boot in about 25 seconds when I used to run Windows off of it.
      It's probably a worst case scenario for the SSD to compete against, but put it up against the original drive and the SSD would smoke it, but in any case Druaga really should include the period from the chime onwards, it's a part of the boot sequence so it should be included.

  • @Twinrehz
    @Twinrehz 8 років тому

    I don't know exactly which models it affects, but I believe it's most models; the fans will run at full speed if a) it takes more than 30 seconds for the computer to load the OS (which is the case when safe booting) b) when you load any pre-OS utilities such as the option-boot that Druaga1 used to boot from the external drive.
    Also, you can't install Panther on a Mac delivered with OS X Tiger (or newer) without doing some bypassing stuff.

    My guess is you were maxing out the SATA bus on that machine, and the time difference was just a margin of error. I know your cheap consumer grade SSDs can easily max out a SATA 1 bus (that includes Kingston and their cheap NAND) so that is very well a possibility.

    Its because you haven't got trim enabled and you didn't connect the temperature sensors if you had the imac took kit from OWC you would have being getting a new temp sensor for third party drives like ssds'

    There might be a bottleneck in your CPU or RAM for booting. Might try replacing the RAM with something speedier if it's supported, and see if that makes a difference. RAM speed shouldn't matter much these days, but it can on these older machines. SATA shouldn't matter because no HDD can even get close to topping out SATA2, so there should still be a noticeable difference by miles.

      PC133 vs PC66 didn't notice a difference. Not caused by RAM speed, Pentium III performed the same either way.
      Maybe from 60ns to 70ns will make a difference. I'll have to pull out my Pentium Pro for that.

      Chris Frank I have Windows 10 Pro 32 bit on my HP Compaq nx7400. It runs decently, but if I really want it to work well I'll need more memory, in other words, it only has 1.5 GB RAM. The max for it is 4GB.

    Why don't Apple make the new iMac this easily upgradable?
    I was able to upgrade the RAM in my 27" 5K , but would like to upgrade the drive at some point, however I'm not comfortable removing the display even though it's only double sided taped on, (what were they thinking when they decided to use that method on a £1.5K machine)
