- Photos taken over the border in Middlesbrough- St Hilda's, where the original town was.
Most of the houses are now demolished or uninhabited, while the whole area is set for redevelopment.
A beautiful short film. I'm from Boro, but now live in Australia. Its a disgrace allowing all that town history to slip away. My Nanna was born in one of those streets over the border.
It reminds me of the devastation the US suffered following the recent hurricanes, no house is intact, the shingles are missing and the doors and windows boarded up. It must have been a beautiful place before it was left to rot away. I imagine the streets were crowded with children playing and everyone getting along and helping each other. For that area those days are long gone but I'm sure whatever has replaced it is a monument to what used to be.
The ANNOYING thing about The °ORIGINAL° MIDDLESBROUGH is the way IT has been LEFT to ROT by the People on Council + MP.s Etc.
Who are DETERMINED that the HISTORICAL places like Over the Border
Are COMPLETELY erased from our MEMORIES.
SEVERAL places of HISTORICAL interest literally WRECKED by the one's ELECTED to Serve Their Constituents, NOT merely PLEASE THEMSELVES what THEY do at OUR EXPENSE.
Because the MONEY THEY'RE WASTING ▪︎ DOESN'T Come From THEIR POCKETS & If they're SHORT of DOUGH ▪︎ Give Electorate MORE WOE ▪︎▪︎▪︎ By having the GALL to CHARGE other people For what is THEIR INCOMPETENCE by SKYROCKETING COUNCIL TAX Etc.
HARD FACED is an UNDERSTATEMENT !
If MONEY was coming from THEIR Pockets There'd be LESS °VANDALISM° EVERYWHERE
All my familys from Boro, and I love going up there. Class place, top lads!
A really moving tribute. St. Hilda's was once so vibrant and the heart of Middlesbrough.
There's a nice new book out showing the birth, growth and decline of the area with lots of great photos: www.amazon.co.uk/Middlesbrough-Hildas-Timelines-Araf-Chohan/dp/0956718787/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438183646
I remember when the Tower Green development was built in the mid 80's. I can't believe it's being demolished 25 years later.
So sad. My Dad is border born and bread. He wont have a bad word said against it. I spent years over there as a kid, I'll never forget the Fleece and Marlbrough Gardens. He allways talks about how the pleasure it of living there at one time, there was no trouble or crime, just happy people, until the council let the 'poisen' in. The council ruined this place. The border made Middlesbrough the town it is mow. So sad what happened over there, it had to go in the end the damage was done.
COUCIL MUST GO! COUCIL MUST GO!
I worked in Royal House for the DHSS. The council spent millions trying to save the place and it got trashed over and over. People weren't coming from the other side of the border to trash it , it was done from within. They smashed all the windows of Royal House because it was DHSS. The reason it was there was because those people needed it the most. It's always the small bad percentage of a community, not another community that destroys the community. I don't suppose being the red light capital of the north East helped much.
My grandad side of the family come from the border and me nana's side grove hill.. i used to go to school over the border ST Christophers only till year 2 and it got knocked down! about 1997.. and I've turned out spot on....
Good on you so have a lor of us good times eh
It's all about perceptions and misinformation. I grew up in Grove Hill and I remember people sneering whenever 'over the border' was mentioned. " Ooh you don't want to go over there, you'll get stabbed ". I'm sure there were some wrong'uns there, but we can say that about anywhere, there's good and bad.
The Blues on princess road was like that bro!
Anyone know what Music this is?
A lot of new stuff is being built in Middlesbrough, but Rome wasn't built in a day. St. Hilda's will end up being a private housing estate, the same with Middlehaven (MFC area). Cannon Park is getting turned into a brand spaking new retail park, plus the likes of Grove Hill is finally being knocked down. It's a boom town that is on the up. Finally.
This didn’t age well.
Welcome to Detroit, oh wait my bad.
What is that hauntingly beautiful tune?
Agree
I live in Middlesbrough
Government policy to dismantle communities they did it all over the country. I do think middlesbrough is a unique place with nowhere like it.
the border was ruff yes but it looked after its own an everyone new each other the police and the council had to destroy the place the community was to tight nit and the police hated it up the boro
It's the people that make Boro, not the government. Long live the Boro!
i was born bred border lad not1 bad thing bout it loved it from wen i was born till i ws 13 still now n agen i stand wer i used to live n no1 can stop me im proud to be a teesider as mcdet sed im from the north and i will die in the north never leavin

Hi. How sad. When I return hom, I would like to meet with your group. Those buildings, as originally desgined and constructed are really architecturally beautiful. What happend?
a similar story in a lot of towns- good money spent but wrong 'uns trash it. Btw i moved to boro 2 years ago, at 42yo and now regard it as home
I remember when the church got set on fire bad man you could still see it in south bank
sad man to see this boro till I die
Used to live in Redcar and went to Middlesbrough a few times with mates and stuff. Couldn't see any difference from it and Redcar. Both as bad as each other. But I was born in Middlesbrough and I fucking love saying I'm from there. Up the Smoggies! The Teessiders - The pride of the North.

@xxhotguy07 haha parmos, i agree mate!
I had a look over today 21/6/15 and there's one house still occupied.
smiffy10uk one house to many .they should of shot dead all the natives who fucking walked outta there .
its been dunn up a canny bit now . i worked on the new bobby shop their.. boros ok man,its like anywhere good and bad. imigration in this country is boros main problem.
Wow. Completely shocking.
There are literally hundreds of people, most of them young, who are on the council housing list with erimus dying to get a house.
How did these communities die in the first place?
Well it was the counsel really. But then came the crime and stuff like that, then I think they just totally forgot about it all.
wow i was only 5 wen my dad took me round there to show me the original mbro now nothing stands but a few buildings. some of its been redeveloped but moneys been WASTED on DECORATIONG the road up to the doors of middlesbrough college. wtfs the point that money could of been spent on the houses instead of WOODEN BOLLADS what will they do?
What was this place like in the mid to late 90's though? I wonder if any of those teenage drug addicts / prostitutes are still alive? I hope so, but i doubt it..
It’s always been a shit hole believe me
