Love your videos Phil. I just got my first lathe and you are my favorite teacher here!
Don't be too hard on your self. I laughed when you said : "you're probably all laughing at me right now". I laughed at your comment, definitely not at your work, it's an amazing piece of art and gives me loads of inspiration.

The juxtaposition of the delicate goblet atop the live edge wood base is dynamite. Well done. 👍🏻🇺🇸

We love the contrast between “this is kind of what I started with” at the bottom and “this is what you can do if you really apply yourself” at the top. And the colour is just amazing - so rich and chocolatey.

That is STUNNING... I just recently 'found' you, so I am binge watching your videos... I love the way you let the wood 'talk' to you and decide how you're going to turn each piece... you're awesome... THANK you for all the great content.

Phil, you have NO need to doubt yourself & your woodturning. It was hard wood & different wood but your approach to your woodturning & your desire to expose the beauty within a piece of wood, regardless of its size & shape, leaves little room for doubt that you will succeed in producing a 'thing of beauty'. An 'artist ' creates apiece because THEY WANT TO, not because someone places a set requirement on. Be bold & resolute using your skills, which are abundant, produce your piece then let other people decide if they like it or don't like. As long as YOU, the artist - woodturner likes it that is what 's most important. That being the case I am sure that the majority of people who view it are going to like it & most of those people are, like me, going to love it. Your a great woodturner & don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Different for you, sure it was but it turned out to be a delightful 'emerging goblet. Well done my friend. Stay safe & well & keep them coming. Don

Well Phil. You did a marvelous job. There were a few moments where I wanted to give you an attitude adjustment for your opinions of your ideas and self doubt . You ARE an artist no matter what you think about yourself. Yes the wood is the show but like a potterer that manipulates the clay - the wood is in your capable hands. Beautiful stunning creation

My wife and I go and dig out iron wood stumps out of the ground. What looks like old rotting wood is an amazing treasure every time I cut a new pice. Some are brown like youe some are almost black and occasionally we get some that shimers like gold. Awsome job thanks for sharing.

Phil you got one thing wrong: me laufhing at you. On the contrary: I truly admire that you made the brave decision on trying to go out of your comfort zone with turning a goblet. Especially with that kind of very hard wood. I had my own share of going out of my comfort zone so I exactly know how it feels. The grain of the wood looks awesome. For me a goblet is never easy to make. So congratulations on this project! Awesome.

Your goblet for not having faith in your spindle turning method turned out GREAT. You didn't need a blueprint for it. EXCELLENT as always. YOU reminded us when you were sanding the end of the goblet you were talking about sanding lightly . Too much sanding will cause friction of the paper heating the wood which may cause the wood to weaken and the splits may get bigger. Good job!!!! KEEP ON TURNING

    Good evening, Phil.
I like it. The wood as amazing. Very glad you settled on the shape, it is exactly correct. I may have used the detail tool and created a ring to form the base of the cup as it sets on the log. That may not look 'emerging' but that's my thought.
    Thumbs up, my friend.

Arizona ironwood. If I remember correctly, it's an acacia wood. My father-in-law collected many oddities in his southwestern states explorations, mostly rocks and minerals, but I found two branches of this buried at the back of his garage. It had been there for a minimum of 30 years! And likely longer than that. Dry, dry, dry! Expected you to do a natural edge bowl, but I did issue you a challenge, didn't I? And you stepped right up and met it! I understand that you have problems with spindle turning projects. I can't do a vase shape to save my shavings, so I do understand. One thing I use for goblets is a tennis ball in the cup. Stops vibration without applying undue pressure. Works a treat when attempting long tapering stems.
    Nicely turned! 👍👍

Dave, I just can't thank you enough for giving me to opportunity to challenge myself with this beautiful piece of wood. It's good to hear some of it's history, too! Most people would have found that and tossed it into a garbage can, but not you! I do know about the tennis ball trick but just didn't feel it necessary as the stem seemed plenty strong enough to do what I had to do, but I'll remember it in case there is a next time. Thank you, my friend!

I remember the day I was cleaning out the accumulated junk in the garage, making space for my woodwork stuff. Found what looked like exceptionally weathered driftwood. Casually tried to lift one of the branches-- darned thing could be used for an anchor! About put my back out because I'd tried lifting with one arm only. Now that I've seen what you could do with that small chunk, I'll have my own go at it.

Phil...you did a great job with a very dicey piece of wood. I love the concept of something (in this case a goblet) emerging from the "hunk" of wood. This is amplified by the way you finish the piece... transition from raw log, to partially finished base, to finished goblet. This piece, like others you have done, is symbolic of the process of wood turning...finding the gem residing in the piece to be turned.

Osage orange is the same way, you’ve got to sharpen your tools every few minutes, tough stuff. Beautiful turning. Love the video 👍👍👍👍

Phil, look at that finish! It is pure glass.
Do Not let the EWT #1 HOLLOWERING TOOL intimidate you. It very rapidly became my GO TO TOOL. It has so many uses.
    Beautiful goblet

The finish surprised me too, John! Sooo smooth and shiny. More than any other wood I have turned.
It's not that the hollowing tool intimidates me, it's that I prefer to use a gouge. But, I agree, it does an excellent job when a gouge just won't. And, yes, it's versatile, not just for hollowing. I just wish they weren't so darn expensive!
Glad you like it, John, thank you!

Well Phil that was a tough one and I like it. It sure has pretty grain for sure.
Once you showed it standing up I saw a goblet flowing down over a chunk of lava.
Just like the base had melted right into it. I really like that affect.
I have 2 pieces of iron wood about that size. I have hesitated to turn them for over a year. Now I know it can be done. Thanks for doing it first!
    Fine job Phil,

The first few cuts were really intimidating, Gary. The piece actually felt more like petrified wood than wood. I was afraid it was just going to splinter into a thousand pieces. But, it worked out! I'll be looking forward to you giving yours a try! Thank you, buddy!

Whatever you saw it becoming in your mind Phil I guess we’ll never know. For me the finished product is really quite beautiful. The richness of the colours, the understated simplicity of the goblet emerging from the log makes for a very special piece indeed. Much enjoyed the process and thanks for sharing.

I think, Geof, when I took it out all those times and looked at it, I thought emerging vase rather than goblet. I guess I forgot that idea the final time I looked at it. In any event, I'm so glad you like it and, mostly, that you enjoyed the process. That alone means a lot to me. Thank you my friend, I hope this finds you having a good day!
