To enhance my grip once I run out of chalk I just use my pre-gain powder as a substitute. That way my barebell and hands can smell like blueberries, gotta confuse the weights.
Hi Meg! Can you do a 5-Minute Friday or regular video on explaining conventional vs. sumo deadlifts and why someone may favor one over the other, pros and cons of each, etc.? I’ve seen seen blips of explanations in some of your other videos, but one comprehensive overview would be awesome! And if you already have a video about this and I missed it, my bad, I’m a new-ish subscriber-just let me know what the video is if applicable :)
I've been trying hook grip recently. I've been doing it with assistance exercises like stiff leg deadlift because I'm using lighter weight. It hurts, I've hit the strange intersection of my personality where I'm stubborn and want to get it down but I'm also a child when it comes to pain
I've been experiencing asymmetrical back/lat pain for a while now and wondered if it was due to my mixed grip, because of the increased stress on one side. Thanks for confirming that this could be the problem, as the physios I've been to see don't have any experience in powerlifting! Gonna try and switch my grip during my warmups and see if I can gradually even out my strength.
Meg! It's like you read my mind. Every video you put out talks about something I just questioned or thought about within my own lifting program. Thanks for being so awesome
Thanks for this!! I have actually been doing alternate grip for about two years now and I’ve had an issue with twisting but didn’t really understand why so I might try switching it up some!
I've started using hook-grip whilst I'm still a relative beginner with deadlifts. I figure that way my thumbs will slowly become conditioned as i go heavier.
I just had someone in my gym ask if I was a powerlifter. I never have but he offered to train me if I wanted it. I had just really heard about it a week or two ago from this channel so now I'm definitely thinking about it
I recently switched to hook grip for top sets and it really isn't that painful, not sure where all the negative vibe is coming from. You just need to experiment with thumb placement and find a sweet spot. Also can tape thumb to prevent irritation to the inner skin. I think Alan Thrall has a video or two on it.
I use double over hand as far as possible each session. Work up to my heavy single after that with mixed. After I hit my single I use straps for rep work.
When i started deadlifting i used the overhand grip. I tried the mix grip, but like you said it gets you out of that symmetrical position. A friend of mine uses the hook grip and altough it can be painfull at first, when you get the hang of it, it's a better grip he says. I still need to get used to it, but i do feel i havr better grip with it. Great video about this Topic Meg
I've lost partial feeling in my thumbs using hook grip because I think I might have crushed a nerve or something. I keep using hook grip though, I feel like the benefits for me outweigh the cons and the pain.
Thanks for this! Always important to let New comers know that everyone experiences grip failure!! Also, I appreciate your use of the word "phalanges" lol
Conventional puller her with muscular imbalance. I have been training hook grip more and more for the past year. Still do working sets and compete using mixed but hoping all the hook grip training helps to build up hook grip strength so I can switch to it entirely!
When I bench my wrists roll back toward my chest. Do I need wrist wraps. Omar and Mike had a video on it but the never got into how to correct it. I've been doing military presses and weighted dips because my alignment is way better.
Hey Meg!! I had a question about how you use your breath. This past week I’ve been experimented more with the types of breaths/holding my breath when pulling weights and it was interesting. haha I was wondering if there were certain breathing rules that you follow while pulling weight? Much love! Thank you for being such a positive force in my life 💕
Hey meg you ever thought about doing a video on finding a great gym in nyc? Im moving to Tribecca soon and was looking for a good gym that was more bodybuilding/powerlifting focused and wasn't a commercial gym like nysc.
This is so helpful! Our gym has banned chalk. So I use straps instead! I can’t pull 90kg without, 110kg with 🤘🏼 thanks for explaining as I use supinated grip and discuss at great length with my lifting partner which one is better for that lift/day
megsquats eek thanks for replying! Yes i think I’ll have to invest 🤣 I also am gonna get a OSB T-shirt asap! Worth the custom charges 😆🇬🇧 love from your UK fan girl 🙋🏻♀️
I would love to hear your thoughts and advice for beginner powerlifters- how to know you’re on the right track and making progress. It seems like my squat will always feel awkward/stiff/off and therefore stay weak AF :/
Meg, could you address bar placement for squats in women? I am tiny with kind of low upper body development, very round shoulders, its so hard to find the right placement and as i attempt to squat more weight, its becoming a serious issue.
Hey Meg, I've got a deadlift question. When I'm approaching my max (and lifting it), notice than I am slower lifting the barbell for the first 12in or so on my first rep than the following ones. That is until I start to fatigue. Does this mean I should work on strengthening my legs a bit more to help the lift?
I think you may have already covered this in a previous video but I'm looking for advice on wraps vs sleeves. I'm a newb, so not lifting heavy, but I have arthritis in my right knee and bending hurts usually after sometimes during a workout session. Which would you recommend wraps or sleeves?
I have a question maybe you could talk about on one of these, I am BRAND new to powerlifting. Like, I don't even have a meet scheduled yet because my life is kind of in flux, but there are a few things I can't really find a lot of reference for. I am 4'11' and I almost always have to put something under my feet to bench at the gym. I know most federations allow blocks but I haven't seen much info about it other than in the rulebooks. Is there a typical size and shape, and/or are the benches a typical height or is it more random depending on the scope of the meet? If I think I'll need them is that something I have to indicate on my registration? I haven't noticed you using them in your meet videos, do you know anyone that uses them? Thanks a ton for everything you offer to us rookies, your videos have helped my training so far IMMENSELY.
Start using hook grip as soon as possible if you’re a beginner. At least at high percentages/last set of a 5x5. Hook grip just takes getting use to, this way you will get calluses on your thumbs and have no pain. There is absolutely no reason to recommend mixed over hook as a beginner. More advanced lifters lifting with mixed should add assistance work for hook grip where you work up to a tolerable weight and do high rep work, slowly adding weight.
Thanks for an awesome video! I've observed you use both mixed grip and straps. On your deadlift-heavy days, do you start mixed and then switch out for straps as you add more weight? I'm considering this route b/c by the 5th set my grip fails well before my posterior chain does.
Hi, thanks Megsquats. I'm just getting into a powerlifting program so lots of deadlifts lol. Have been using double overhand for a few years as it feels really comfortable but my weights I guess aren't that high yet that I feel the bar slipping. Gonna try and add in hook grip on my next session and see how I get on. One question though, can you/do you use hookgrip for Oly lifts? I'm thinking maybe for snatch but not for clean and jerk?
Yo meg completely unrelated questions for ya #1 Which Deadlift (Con/Sumo/"Hybrid" or semi sumo) & Squat (High/Low/"Hybrid") variation/s would you recommend/ is your favorite ? #2 Have thought aboot making comics like the Hodgetwins 🏋 ?
I tried to learn hook but the weight made my thumbs crack o_o I would do mixed grip but I like you have concerns about asymmetry. I do right over left under w/ a 1rm attempt. My right elbow is shot, and can't tolerate the positioning of underhand. I used to do a lot of MG when I was learning and drilling in technique, but now I tend to stick to double overhand as much as possible. I do think that doing as much double overhand as possible does translate well into the weightlifting scene, which i also love. #workingwithwhatyougot #yagurlmeg
everyone always talks about how painful hook grip is, but most of those people have only done it for a short period of time. once you do it for a while, and after warming it, the hookgrip doesnt hurt that much. also if you think about it too much it hurts more, just dont think about it.
I use double overhand ... I lift light weights haha like 90kg. My boyfriend uses hook grip ... there was an adjustment period but he got there and is deadlifting 260kg with it. Might eventually change to hook grip but I dunno don't like pain
Hookgrip for me is not that painful, but my fingers are pretty long so that might be why. I saw doctor deadlift's video on it a while back which had some good content on hookgrip as well. Still great video though Meg :D
I use double overhand hook grip. Took a long time away from the gym and when I started back I bruised my poor thumbs 😂 I miss Crossfit and the unlimited chalk provided, dayumm. I used to use mixed grip when looking for 1rm but now I refuse on some weird principle, whateverrrr. I just workout for fun and fitness anyway :)
Hey Meg! As always you're vids are really inspiring and informative. I very much enjoy them, but i have one itsy bitsy bit of criticsim, which is: These explaination videos needs some additional clips - show and tell-style. people who are just getting into lifting will have it easier understanding. I get that it would require alittle more effort, so i have full respect if you do not have time to pull one off every single day, but i think it would be a good thing for you if you'd like to broaden your audience :) Keep up the good work! :)
Underhand grips can tear the biceps! No mixed grip either (develops asymmetry, and the underhand bicep can tear) - have a double overhand grip, or hook grip (hook your thumb under the bar and grab it with your fingers). Using a #TrapBar is probably the best way to deadlift and avoid injury and shin scabs. This advice is for normal people, not on PEDs, doing sets for exercise/weight-training. Not for pointless #OneRepMax #roidheads.
I'm sure it has it's place, esp for lifters who are dealing with injury, or focused in unilateral movement. Overall I think there are more practical movements to utilize
Hook grip isn't necessarily that painful, I feel like your description of hook grip is slightly misguided.. in the hook grip you don't put and sqeeze everything into the thumb joint, the thumb will instead be pointed straight down and you will use the meaty part of your thumb that comes from the pressure instead. Plenty of videos have been made about this.
I have to say I have the same problems as Meg, its not skin pain I have, its joint pain, like the two bone sections in thumb are trying to seperate. You are ultimately forcing more weight through your thumbs with this position, maybe its just how one's anatomy is able to handle it. Some might have no problems and some may struggle
Grip training though. Still. Rack pulls and holds 😉 Hook grip and straps are ultimately a RELIANCE, and it's THEIR grip strength lifting those weights, not yours!
Mixed Grip the perfect way to tear a bicep... just use Double Overhand antill you need straps you will build better grip over time and not end up with one huge trap and a bicep tear.
I'm not sure if there's been a study, but the amount of bicep tears in the deadlift compared the the amount of competitive powerlifters deadlifting max weight, is likely just as common as any other injury. I'd say even less so with drug-tested lifters, outside of SHW classes.
megsquats I would 100% agree with you if I trained conventionally , however my lifestyle requires me to have more grip strength than most people will ever come across , I've spent 20 years focusing on grip and hand strength , I Quarter Decks of cards which was an aim for mine for a long time , that's ripping a deck of cards in half then putting both stacks on top of each other and ripping them in half again , phone books ect. Try it out some time ! It's fantastic for training grip strength. I would also recommend over / under to most people but if you are serious enough the Grip strength can overlay your deadlift max , it will take years of course but if you start early , and focus nothing will get left behind. Thanks for the vids , keep em up ! Double under , I hope you would also agree is extremely dangerous for tendons and muscle tears. I've seen many biceps explode and tear on double under grips.
Wouldn't it be better to stick with overhand grip if you have training time to do so? While grip strength may not progress as fast as other muscle groups for lifting it can be worth it to focus on increasing grip strength even if you have to slow down some other lifts. Again, that assumes you are not getting ready for a competition where total weight lifted is important.
To enhance my grip once I run out of chalk I just use my pre-gain powder as a substitute. That way my barebell and hands can smell like blueberries, gotta confuse the weights.
omg lol. this is a creative Idea, that I cannot get behind. If I'm ever running out of ideas for videos, I shall try this.

She just did one this week, if you haven’t seen it yet make sure to check it out!
Can you do a video on good mornings? Why and why not to do them, technique, etc
I've been trying hook grip recently. I've been doing it with assistance exercises like stiff leg deadlift because I'm using lighter weight. It hurts, I've hit the strange intersection of my personality where I'm stubborn and want to get it down but I'm also a child when it comes to pain

Dat combo of eyes, shirt and background colors. Aesthetic!
Thanks for this!! I have actually been doing alternate grip for about two years now and I’ve had an issue with twisting but didn’t really understand why so I might try switching it up some!
Another great 5 minute Friday, I am a fan of the mixed grip myself
I've started using hook-grip whilst I'm still a relative beginner with deadlifts. I figure that way my thumbs will slowly become conditioned as i go heavier.
this is a good idea
it take some time get used to it
I like the tapestry behind you. It's very complimentary to your overall pallette.
I just had someone in my gym ask if I was a powerlifter. I never have but he offered to train me if I wanted it. I had just really heard about it a week or two ago from this channel so now I'm definitely thinking about it
This video made me realise why I got injured so thank you now I know what to do in the future

super helpful, thanks Meg!
thanks for sharing your knowledge! i love this !
I use double over hand as far as possible each session. Work up to my heavy single after that with mixed. After I hit my single I use straps for rep work.
My personal fave is hook grip. Took some getting used too but it’s essential if you have sweaty hands also use chalk before u use straps
Just saw 3 of your videos and you are incredible!!! So I subscribed. Can't wait to see the next video
I'm obsessed with your videos!! So helpful!!!😁 keep it up💕
Maybe talk about shoes? Heel heights, picking shoes if you're less flexible, shoes for specific lifts, etc.? Or maybe discuss compression?
Yessss! Thank you! ❤️ I’ve learned quite a bit. I’m going to rotate my grips and work on strengthening both.
When i started deadlifting i used the overhand grip. I tried the mix grip, but like you said it gets you out of that symmetrical position. I love fridays cuz your vids🙌🙌😊😊😊
Recently started making the switch to hook. My thumbs are not happy.
I love that side brade
Thanks for this! Always important to let New comers know that everyone experiences grip failure!! Also, I appreciate your use of the word "phalanges" lol
how to increase your deadlift... been stuck at 215 for the past two months really wanna hit 2 plates soon
Can you do a video on breathing techniques during lifting?
Conventional puller her with muscular imbalance. I have been training hook grip more and more for the past year. Still do working sets and compete using mixed but hoping all the hook grip training helps to build up hook grip strength so I can switch to it entirely!
oh good!! I tried hook today and it was so unnatural a kept pulling out. Glad im not just a wimp!
When I bench my wrists roll back toward my chest. Do I need wrist wraps. Omar and Mike had a video on it but the never got into how to correct it. I've been doing military presses and weighted dips because my alignment is way better.
Meg, I am ALWAYS frisky I do all of the grips when training. Might not be efficient but figured why not (Hook Grip is still the devil though).
Hey Meg!! I had a question about how you use your breath. This past week I’ve been experimented more with the types of breaths/holding my breath when pulling weights and it was interesting. haha I was wondering if there were certain breathing rules that you follow while pulling weight? good question! would love to see a video on this for 5 minute friday!
I will answer this in a video next week
megsquats aww! Awesome! Thank you so much
Hey meg you ever thought about doing a video on finding a great gym in nyc? Im moving to Tribecca soon and was looking for a good gym that was more bodybuilding/powerlifting focused and wasn't a commercial gym like nysc.
What about wrist straps?
Can't see any calluses on your hands :O what do you do to get rid of them?
what do you use for knee wraps/sleeves? ive seen you tie some sort of cloth
I do double overhand with my thumbs over the bar next to my index finger, think they call that a double overhand suïcide grip or thumbless grip?
Hi Meg, great video! Just wondering, what did you use for your audio? You sound great!
I watch you and Brooke Ence before the gym in the morning ^-^
This is so helpful! Our gym has banned chalk. So I use straps instead! I can’t pull 90kg without, 110kg with 🤘🏼 thanks for explaining as I use supinated grip and discuss at great length with my lifting partner which one is better for that lift/day
yay! I'm glad you like it! I hope you can use liquid chalk on the low as an alternative. Def less mess
megsquats eek thanks for replying!
I do crossfit and we do mixed grip. Love the video!
I use double hook grip for reps and mixed for heavy low reps
Meg, could you address bar placement for squats in women? I am tiny with kind of low upper body development, very round shoulders, its so hard to find the right placement and as i attempt to squat more weight, its becoming a serious issue.
I unfortunately got a muscle imbalance due to well... never alternating my mixed grip
Are you still doing workouts for different athletes? Maybe you could try a speed skating workout sometime.
Switching up your mix
You are so perfect, obsessed with your channel

I love hook grip but my grip strength cant bear it ;(

Ah so, Sensei Meg! I rike your exprenation of the deadrift glip. Konenchiwa!
Meg , i love your channel , music is too , how do i say it , too much
:D
I use double overhand until I almost drop the bar, then I switch to alternate and change which hand is underhand every set

Make a video on "How to bench press" which is the correct technique
I used to use mixed but have slowly converted to hookgrip and I ain't gonna go back
Hey Megsquats! U rock!
thank you buddy
Whoo the world is the right way up this time
Thanks meg,,,
Why is the music so loud?
I love Megasquats and I can't deny it💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💓
love u back buddy
*watching Omar Isuf’s latest vid, sees Megsquats new video notification & immediately switches over to meg’s new video* hi megs 👋🏽
HIIIII! Hope you enjoyed
Hook grip 4 lyfe Meg
Mixed grip wrecked my left shoulder. 😩
Hey Meg! As always you're vids are really inspiring and informative. I very much enjoy them, but i have one itsy bitsy bit of criticsim, which is: These explaination videos needs some additional clips - show and tell-style. people who are just getting into lifting will have it easier understanding. I get that it would require alittle more effort, so i have full respect if you do not have time to pull one off every single day, but i think it would be a good thing for you if you'd like to broaden your audience :)
Keep up the good work! :)
Yep! Look for those in other/non 5 Min Friday videos! But we’ll see what we can do
Loveeeeeeed this video! :D:D hahahah Thanks Meg :D
Underhand grips can tear the biceps! No mixed grip either (develops asymmetry, and the underhand bicep can tear) - have a double overhand grip, or hook grip (hook your thumb under the bar and grab it with your fingers). hook grip ftw!
What's your opinion on Smith machine deadlift?
I'm sure it has it's place, esp for lifters who are dealing with injury, or focused in unilateral movement. Overall I think there are more practical movements to utilize
megsquats Thanks! You're awesome! Love your vids!
The background music is destructing.
Pray for me y'all started trying to learn hook grip.
hello meg's
Hook grip isn't necessarily that painful, I feel like your description of hook grip is slightly misguided.. in the hook grip you don't put and sqeeze everything into the thumb joint, the thumb will instead be pointed straight down and you will use the meaty part of your thumb that comes from the pressure instead. Plenty of videos have been made about this.
In the times I've tried it, it is painful. Feel free to link the other videos for others
Hook grip was very painful for me for the first few weeks but then my thumbs developed calluses and now there is very little to no pain.
ua-cam.com/video/FTi_8KpDDIo/v-deo.html
This guy explains it pretty well :)
Check out the video I linked, see if it helps with your issue
I made it
No ever talks about mixed hook grip lol
Bc that would increase the liklihood of a bicep tear
Double overhand only. Lol
Grip training though. Still. Rack pulls and holds 😉 Hook grip and straps are ultimately a RELIANCE, and it's THEIR grip strength lifting those weights, not yours!
hookgrip cuz im a vegan, crossfitter, jehovah witness
Mixed Grip the perfect way to tear a bicep... just use Double Overhand antill you need straps you will build better grip over time and not end up with one huge trap and a bicep tear.
I'm not sure if there's been a study, but the amount of bicep tears in the deadlift compared the the amount of competitive powerlifters deadlifting max weight, is likely just as common as any other injury. I'd say even less so with drug-tested lifters, outside of SHW classes.
mixed-grip is the best ... with each new video you appear to be always stronger ...your eyes are green or blue?
bar don't roll out of your hands if you don't have weak hands.
I’d be willing to bet that your deadlift is higher than what your double overhand grip can sustain
megsquats I would 100% agree with you if I trained conventionally , however my lifestyle requires me to have more grip strength than most people will ever come across , I've spent 20 years focusing on grip and hand strength , I Quarter Decks of cards which was an aim for mine for a long time , that's ripping a deck of cards in half then putting both stacks on top of each other and ripping them in half again , phone books ect.
Every time I think of a mixed grip I just picture my bicep detaching... cringe!
That’s what I said
