I tried using hook grip the other week because I hated having one hand supinated and my max deadlift went from 475 to 185
be optimist 185 is your hookgrip PR 1 rep max
J Lee straps plus double over hand?
J Lee I can only deadlift 365 and I did 245×5 my first time ever doing the hook grip today. It was uncomfortable but not terrible or anything. I think you're doing something wrong, man. It takes time to build up but it shouldn't hurt that severely. Make sure you're running your thumb PARALLEL to the bar and not UP the bar if that makes sense. You want the bar to be pressing your thumb between itself and your fingers, not feeling like it's going to be ripped off because your thumb is being yanked from being pointed up.
Lol
whahahahahaha !!!
Brienne of Tarth
lol
Damn.
Dead 😂💀
I was wondering wtf you talking about then looked at the guy, and started laughing.🤣🤣
I opened this video to see if I could find this comment. Not disappointed.
4:15 my man fell asleep, woke up, then realized he was still holding the bar.
GwasBro lmfoaaiisoa
cmon... xD
That smirk @3:45
snaatch grip lol
The video very nicely explained finger positioning, the middlefinger on thumbnail part helped me a lot. Thanks a lot.
Thank you based Rippetoe
Based ripp curse
Based on what?
Based
Great timing. I've been debating dropping the mixed grip. I'll give this a go tomorrow morning.
5 years now. Has anything changed?
The people demands an answer
The other issue I have with over/under hand grip is that I find that my right elbow become sore. One disadvantage I have is that I am missing a part of my right hand little finger so the double overhand grip (normal) is significantly weakened since it happened (over a year ago). Will start practicing the hook grip.
couldn't wait to know how to use the hook GRIIIAHP
Hip Draaiveh
Thanks Rip! Now I combine alternating grip with the hook grip and can deadlift 810 KGs.
Excellent video and right when I needed it!
I guess they call him Mark rip a toe for a reason ...
Filip Polách thumb /= toe
Andrew Song yea idk why they got it wrong
Mark Rip A Thumbs
Thanks for clarifying how to perform this grip for me. I can see the value of the hook grip but I have short fingers and can't seem to reach it on a standard bar.
Brienne of Tarth got that strength
Dude Chase looks like Brienne of Tarth, from Game Of Thrones. No offense meant, obviously.
Mark Issac That's pretty dope tbh. I'm sure he won't mind lol.
What's game of thrones?
I tried this hook grip for the 1st time today in the gym. Although I found it very uncomfortable, it allowed me to lift a PB on my dead lift 😁.
Thanks for sharing!

I have rather large hands, is it acceptable (since I am capable of it) to place my ring finger over the thumb as well?
Sam LoDestro if it works, do it. I grip my thumb with my middle and ring fingers, and it works magics. ;)
Good idea, I've got big old sausage fingers lol.
for me 2 fingers (i.e. what he showed) kinda hurts, with 3 fingers (I got big boy hands too) it feels great.
Yes, the more fingers you can get over the thumb the better. Some weightlifter let their thumb nail grow longer to be able to get three fingers on the thumb.
Mixed grip DL Hasn't worked for me because I only grab the bar with one hand at a time. Thanks Rip!
Sir Mark ☝
i seem to only slip with my left hand
GwasBro same case for me. It slips out of my left hand when hook gripping
Do you do much dumbbell rows/unilateral work?
very helpful, thank you
my fingers just slide off my thumb im hook grip unless i use a shitton of chalk. Anyone else have that problem?
Not really, maybe your fingers are either to short, or you have sweaty hands. Id probably lean towards the sweaty hands if I had to guess. Nothing wrong with using chalk either way, unless your gym is a bitch about it.
Great video. Thanks.
The blonde dude looks like one of those ancient greek statues....
It depends on your goals of course but if someone has no desire to compete just use straps. No need to break your thumbs with this grip
I hook grip for 2+ years now and my thumbs are completely healthy and working
guy on the left is freaking me out
I tried hook grip once and it felt like my thumb was being ripped off.
+goodinsrt8 it gets better
ekw555 I tried it again after I watched this video and 135 was really uncomfortable. I have dropped weight and went for reps recently and my grip strength has went way up.
not as bad as a ripped toe
Search UA-cam for "painless hook grip" and watch Clint Darden's video. If you do it right, it doesn't really hurt. Basically, you want to have it over the fat part of your thumb, otherwise it will rip off the new calluses you'll develop from hook grip (and if you don't have those calluses yet, it just feels like your thumb is being ripped off).
Love the hook grip!
Good video
I have a question. When we use the hook grip and the mixed grip, we are using friction to keep the bar in our hands, rather than actual grip strength. So why not just use straps? since they employ friction also. What's the difference?
everyone will look down on you for no reason
@@cmdrfunk So, if I don't mind getting my feelings hurt, is there any difference in the grips?
I found that my pinky and anular fingers are very weak, so I end up holding the barbells with the other 3 fingers. Will the hook grip help me with my "outer" fingers strength?
Armando Gómez I have no use of my left pinky so im pulling with 3 fingers like you on one hand..grip is piss.. so I switched to alternate and now im pulling more having the crap hand reversed..grip gave out on 160kgs hooked...latest since alternate..240kgs and climbing..smash it!!!!
It won't help with the outer finger strength, but it'll allow you to basically take those fingers out of the equation so they won't be a limiting factor anymore
Are there Any long term risks with the thumb besides callouses while using this?
+Lance Hare Nope. Not if you do it right.
There's been no studies, this is a new style of grip so no one could know until a doctor releases a study.
How is it new exactly? Hasn't it been used for quite a while in weightlifting?
+Steve Used in Olympic lifts so it's not new. New to powerlifting but not weight training overall.
The risk is increased grip strength, your girl will notice it if you havn't strangled her accidently. A very serious risk!
setting up with straps is fucking up my working sets, gonna make the switch. RIP thumbs.
What kind of weightlifting shoes are Chase wearing?
+diesel828 VS Athletics
Starting Strength Thank you
Awesome video! Next time let that girl in the background know your'e filming ;)
mmm hook grip takes awhile to get used to... i found having a cup of concrete usually solves any problems youll have with it
So I'm all about the hook grip, but rip I notice in your deadlift videos that you use an alternate grip. Is this just something you prefer for max lifts?
+Corey Lambrecht ...I watched the whole thing. and I'm very experienced on the subject. My question was why Rip uses an alternate grip after discussing its flaws in this video.
+Daniel Parks because he's old and didn't figure it out until he'd already done it a certain way longer than most of us have been alive. Also, any video of him deadlifting that you've seen on UA-cam weren't from regular training.
+Starting Strength right..they were always just singles. I was curious if that's just something he does for max weight but trains regularly with hook grip?
@@drparks1061 why do you care how Rip trains?
@@Francesco-cj3oi if I'm going to learn from someone, I sure would want to know why they'd teach one thing but do something different. Wouldn't you?
Your shoulder should not be rolled in and out like that if you are doing alternate properly. The forearm has the ability to rotate without rotating the entire arm. It is the whole point of having a radius and ulna instead of a single bone. Even still, the hook grip is also legit.
Both middle finger and index finger hold the thumb ;)
IT ENDS UP WHERE IT ENDS UP
Hurts my thumb a bitch. Is it alright to wrap some tape (surgical tape) to protect where the thumb rubs against the knurled bar?
Yep, I always tape my thumbs.
Since Rip mentions that the alternate hand grip creates shoulder imbalances, wouldn't switching the hands on each set balance things out. I find it hard to hook grip anyway because my hands are too small.
the main problem mentioned was the difference in lat engagement during the pull.
Is it true that it can cause permanent nerve damage?
Is chase’s dad Ivan Drago?
Dont put the finger over the nails if possible because it hurts like shit. Really dig the bar in your hand and put middle and index finger under the thumb nail on the bones so it doesnt hurt.
is that his son?
Nah it's his uncle
With all due respect (and much is due), I'm going to keep using alternating and switching as I go up in weight.
I've seen brienne of tarth when she was a young lady
my hands are too small :/
You probably just lack flexibility, not size. My hands are smaller than most chinese female weightlifters and I can still manage it.
Is there any argument against straps for a person who doesn't compete (besides the obvious because it's for pussies reason)? I wonder because the hook grip or alternate grip are pretty much the same as straps. You don't build your grip strength you just make it easier. So why not use straps and not risk damaging your thumbs. Or just train grip so that you can pull it double overhand.
If they didn't train your grip, people wouldn't miss lifts because of grip giving out.
I've pulled 630 when I was focusing on strength and can tell you, your forearms and fingers know when you pull heavy even with mixed.
You'll end up working forearms with tons of other exercises (Lat pull down, rows, shrugs, etc.) so using straps on deadlift isn't a huge deal. Deadlifts are mostly meant to strengthen your whole body and I'll take back and leg development over forearm development.
Straps.
I like how informative this video is but please skip the excessive info and just go straight to the hook grip
