The most interesting, and possibly most hated main in New Mexico was a lawman by the name of El Fuego Baca (Disney made a movie about him). He wanted to be a deputy sheriff, was originally told no, but then was allowed on the proviso that he bring in those on the most wanted list. He would track down those men, then have a messenger deliver a message to the outlaw that if he didn't surrender himself to El Fuego, he would be shot on sight. A lot of outlaws surrendered themselves. One day, El Fuego entered a crowded bar, arrested a cowboy while shooting two of his fellow cowboys and took the cowboy to jail. A standoff ensued and was unsuccessful for the cowboys as the jail was mostly underground. El Fuego was eventually talked into surrendering to the sheriff. El Fuego was acquitted of murder when the door to the jail, which had 400 bullet holes, was entered into evidence.
A great story and figure in New Mexico was Elfego Baca and the 1884 Frisco Shootout. Elfego Baca took on 40 Texas cowboys in a gunfight that lasted 33 hours, 4000 rounds fired, and several cowboys killed or injured... Elfego Baca is buried in Albuquerque NM
