Coincidence that not only Joe Theisman and Alex Smith played for the Washington Redskins, but both suffered their near-identical injuries (compound fractures) on the same date (November 18th). The biggest difference was that Alex Smith had the advantage of 30 years of medical advancements that would allow him to return to play the game, whereas Theisman would be forced to retire.
Also the teams playing Washington had red, white, & blue for colors (Giants & Texans) while the defender causing the injuries were 3X DPOYs (Lawrence Taylor & JJ Watt) 😳
I'll never forget watching that Cinci/Bills game live on tv. Traumatizes me to this day and broke into tears the day after, realizing that I just watched someone die on the field. Thankfully he was successfully resuscitated and is back to playing the game he loves, but seeing it at the time and thinking back to it now it'll always remind me of how quickly it can all end, no matter what you're doing.
As great as these all are, I think at least one more that should be added or in another video is that of Gale Sayers. His career was cut short after a devastating hit by the 49ers' Kermit Alexander. It was on TV, so there must be some video of it somewhere. BTW, I was watching the game in which Joe Theisman got hit. I remember having to look away from the TV when they showed the slow motion replay of his leg. Thanks for this one!
Besides the Theisman injury, other nauseating injuries I remember vividly were Raiders RB Napoleon McCallum against the 49ers in 1994, Bengals DL Tim Krumrie against the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIII, and Jets DE Dennis Byrd against the Kansas City Chiefs in 1992. Krumrie actually came back from his leg injury and played six more seasons.
Back in the 90s, mainly due to the lack of social media, injuries were harder to cover. And the attitude towards guys being hurt was totally different. Thanks for sharing
I’ve actually got the privilege of meeting Theisman while I was working one day, he’s such a great guy, even went back to his house to give me an autographed photo.
Another Lion, Chuck Hughes died of a heart attack in 1971 a few feet from Dick Butkus Even less video, but Hughes Theismann and Utley (along with improved technology) helped lead to the on field response that saved Hamlin
The Joe Theismann tackle is shown at the start of the film The Blindside. Notice that Lawrence Taylor is one of the first to realise that Joe is hurt bad.
Didn't tim Krumrie (sp?) have a devastating injury in the 80s or early 90s? As a Cincinnatian, I heard of him, although not a football fan. Where's his history? When I saw this, I half expected his history to be included.
Hear me out, the Narrator of this video should apply for many things. Audio Books voice works alone could put you through university. Great voice, great articulation, endearing voice and intonations. It’s just perfect for books! And radio!
In this video he talks about the most violent hits NFL players take, that most of the time, would end there carriers, but my question is does the owners honor there contracts with the player, to me that's a very good question, as team's will not disclose that information, but in previous video's that I have watched, I always comment that in the NFL, it's a very violent/powerful/physical game and if you play there's a 50/50 %,you might get injured, and you are going to the hospital, and in some cases, straight to the ER,for emergency surgery, like what happened to me, two times, and when I woke up, I was in hospital wear, with gauge wrapped around my hips, 2 times, then I had to go to rehabilitation for two months, and in that time, it gives you a lot of time to think about your life, and I don't like being SCARED, and the 1st time I said to the doctor, that as a CATHOLIC, I want a PRIEST, to give me my LAST RIGHTS, as I don't want my SPIRIT TO GO TO HELL,and I can sit next to JESUS CHRIST,as I believe that even animals have spirits, and some people think that I am crazy, but I don't care what they say, it's between me and GOD, and when someone dies I can see the SPIRIT RISE,and I talked to my father about this, just like when I was in high school and I talked to the brother about this subject, it's a very scary situation, and I tell people that I constantly talk to my departed family members, for directions as far as my life is concerned, as they tell me that they will guide me, to the bright light, which is called HEAVEN.
You forgot the Lions Chuck Hughes. You can't have a worse outcome on the field than his. I don't remember what year it was, but #85 collapsed while playing the Bears and died on the field. He's the only NFL player to ever die on the field in a game.
1971. The Lions totally flattened after that. Similar incidents were Ray Chapman (1920 Cleveland Indians) and Bill Masterton (1968 Minnesota North Stars).
Damn, seems like playing against the Bengals is a career killer.

It’s a beautiful but violent game
Seeing Hamlin go down made me cry just like when it happened the first time.

The most gruesome injuries I'd ever seen in baseball were Tony Conigliaro and Tony Saunders.
Darryl Stingley comes to mind from 1978
We are having an individual video on that hit. Real nasty. Also on Stanley Morgan. Thanks for watching!
during a meaningless preseason game.

Look up Mike Utley. Played for the Lions many years ago. Was paralyzed during a game. There might not be video of it.
Will do! Thanks for watching

@@tylerjerabek5204 Thanks for sharing. Did not know about Hughes.
I was just going to say why wasn’t Mike utleys injury on this
I remember this

Sterling Sharpe should be in the hall of fame.
Great video
Appreciate it! Thank you

We are making a volume 2 of more obscure injuries. Bunch coming up…
No Daryl Stingley or Mike Utley? Korey Stringer? Tim Krumrie? This list should’ve been much longer.
Volume 2 will 👍🏼

Will let George know. Thanks for watching!
It was a flea-flicker play, not a Play Action pass with Theisman

Sterling Sharpe should be in the HOF. We should put that decision near the top of the absolute criminally stupid decisions made by those in charge.
Bro the Bengals are responsible for shazier, Hamlin and Bo Jackson injuries ☠️
No Chuck Hughes? Or Daryl Stingley?
Volume 2

Higgins killed Hamlin on the field for a few minutes
Dennis Byrd, N.Y. Jets
Thanks for watching
I'm shocked that Jack Tatum never suffered a serious injury. He was the equivalent of a heat seeking missle.
Tatum was responsible for Stingley. look @ the comment below by Anne Losch 555.
The narrator is corny as hell. "His leg break was heard over the crowd."
Be nice, you’ll hurt his feelings. Thanks for watching
