Bikepacking the Blue Ridge Parkway Day 1: Afton to Roanoke

- Eric Thompson and I decided to bikepack the Blue Ridge Parkway for a few reasons. Eric lives in Asheville and I live in Roanoke, so we had a "base" at the start and finish. Eric had never done a bikepack trip and I thought this one would be fun/easy one to do credit card style. Lastly, I thought it would be great training for me as I needed to fit some volume in.
*Credit card style refers to using a credit card to pay for stuff, mostly lodging, instead of camping and being totally self reliant. I like this style because you can travel light and fast, sleep in a normal bed at the end of the day, and are usually in civilization so it's pretty stress fee.
So here is Day 1. Mile marker 0 to Roanoke. Because of the way we split this up the first day we didn't need bags because we were going from the start to my house. We will get to utilize this perk at the end of the trip, from Eric's house to the end.

I grew up in Lynchburg and spent many hours at Peaks of Otter and on the Parkway and the AT. I've been in Colorado for thirty years but if I ever go back I want to do the Parkway bike ride. Lots of memorable scenes in this video Thank you!!
What a great plan - being able to stay in your homes for a couple of the overnights. Fun video, looks like you had good weather for this first segment - LONG mileage for the first of several days though.
Now that the NPS has declared the whole BRP section from US220 to Adney Gap off-limits in advance of work on the landslide at milepost 128, I'm going to miss enjoying that "car-free" zone.
I like that Eric does the "super tuck" so often he taped a foam pad to his top tube to sit on. 😂
Thanks Kerry....looks really cool there now ! Peace
Did this last year in 6 days rode it the other way in 1998 6 days for parkway and skyland drive those fences were up last year also.
Beast, just rode both in 11 after not riding in 12 years. Going back to try just parkway up and back in 13-14
What bikes were y'all riding? Rove and Diverge?
Nice headliner in that car. Needs some gorilla glue to keep it from falling
So you just crushed the TSE and a week later just casually start a 400+ mile bikepacking trip ... Nice ... the Pro Life!
Lol I was thinking that when I saw this pop up. I'm like wwwwtf Kerry haha.
This was actually the week before tse
