FYI - To help you guys understand the timing/my travels: - Started in March 2017, Scotland. - Left Scotland April 2017. Returned to Denver to apply for UK visa. - Returned to Scotland December 2017 after acquiring UK visa (WOO!!) - Married Feb 2018, now permanently living in Scotland :D
It's so wonderful to see your earlier work as you can see the amazing development of your skills and reminds us that everyone starts somewhere and that even humble beginnings can lead to greatness. It's surprising how much you've grown and how much we can all grow if we just put the time and effort into it. Thank you for leaving these available as it gives beginners hope as to what they too can achieve. Comparing to your current work is inspiring and shows us the path to reach our potential. Thank you for sharing this with us and allowing us to see the beginning of your journey which is so relateable to others.
Thank you for sharing this as it was cool to watch you trying new things and your style changing and developing. Very lovely book! You should pat yourself on the back for creating that special little book.
Enjoyed the tour. I don't travel internationally, rarely do I get the chance to sit and sketch. But I tend to work on smaller books similar to the Moleskin large.
Interesting! I never thought of it that way. But yes, I often remember the "glare" I felt when I painted in Colorado. The thin atmosphere and intense light made it difficult to see color. In Scotland I can relax a bit more. My eyes aren't strained as often. And I LOVE the moody weather here :)
Would love to see aspen trees and CO waterfalls with your current skill too. Maybe Niagara Falls too. Lovely sketchbook! I am working on your Rocks Skillshare course and enjoying it. Thanks so much!
Hello!! I just want to say thanks because you inspired me to go outside and start painting. Previusley I just paint on my studio but your paints are so glorious that I want to try :D Have a wonderful day and keep painting :D
Beautiful sketchbook. I guess I need someone like you to go afield with. I just don't seem to get my butt out there. And time waits for no man ( or woman, lol) gorgeous.....
I wish I knew another local artist who likes plein air as much as I do - it would be so nice to encourage each other to go out even on the icky days. It's too easy to just stay inside..
I’m about to go to Alaska for a week and my goal is to paint every day! I hope to come back with a full sketchbook. Yours is beautiful! I need to remember the white gouache for all the snow & glaciers - though they are quite blue there.
I love your videos and your work --- you make me want to get out there and use my gouache paints - you're a real inspiration - congrats on all your lovely results
Loved this video...going to put on my site Ladies Fresh Air Art on facebook if that be ok with you. Guess what??? We have an Inverness, Florida right up the road from me. History of the town says a lonely Scotsman, far away from his home, who gazed upon the blue waters of the Native American-named Tsala Apopka Lake and thought the area looked like the headlands and lochs of Inverness in Scotland. Pretty cool huh? I am going to take some pics and do some plein air there and show you. It is a beautiful place. My husband has always wanted to go to Scotland. Was in the military for 20 years and traveled the world but never made it to Scotland. Thank you for sharing so much of your beautiful home so we can also be blessed with such beauty !!!
Great sketchbook tour Sarah, beautiful paintings. I have fallen out with Moleskine these days, they are not as good as the old ones, some of mine started coming unbound and one lot had some really dodgy paper. Have you tried the new watercolour travel journals from British company Seawhite? The paper is really nice to work with - way better than the newer Moleskines, and they are quite cheap - I think about £10 for an A5. I keep the small A6 journal in my jacket pocket - goes everywhere with me. p.s. Congratulations on your wedding - love that beautiful photo at 22:08 that is something special.
Thank you so much! Yea, was gifted another Moleskin (same size) and just after opening it, I noticed the cover was thinner, and the pages were flimsier/smoother. I'm wondering how that will effect my painting. I don't mind too much with gouache - I can pretty much paint on anything. But I just love taking my mini watercolor set and a waterbrush - it's so convenient. I'll check out the Seawhite brand, that's great advice! Plus it would be nice to support a local company. I might also give Stillman and Birn a look. Cheers!
@@SarahBurnsStudio I agree with Peter Sobocki - The Seawhite of Brighton watercolor journals are amazing! I had major issues with uneven sizing in my Moleskine and being somewhat of a beginner to watercolor didn't need any additional challenges! But the Seawhite is truly wonderful to work in.
@@gonecoastalfl that is wonderful to hear because I was just gifted a Seawhite! I can't wait to try it. I've been so annoyed with moleskins that I only use then for gouache now.
@@SarahBurnsStudio I totally understand. I love the look of the Moleskine but just couldn't deal with the inconsistencies. I forgot to tell you I love your video! Your sketches are beautiful and such lovely memories :)
Nice work, very inspiring. I'm still working up the courage to do plein air work. How do watercolors hold up in freezing temps? Does the page freeze and thaw when you go inside?
Sarah, Hi, I've only just discovered you. I'm so pleased!! In your plain air sketch book work, do you draw first or go straight in with the watercolour?
Hello! Thank you! Usually I just jump right in with paint, sometimes using a very light color to block in my light areas first or establish the overall composition. But if it's a very complicated scene like with architecture I usually do a quick sketch.

That's exactly why I do the sketchbook tours and leave them all public (as much as it makes me cringe sometimes 😂)
This was amazing to watch, thank you for sharing! 💕🙂
WOW! Has your art grown!!! Looking then to now shows such tremendous growth in your work.
Thank you!
Your video is great! I love seeing clips of you painting at the actual location. Just beautiful! ❤️

I enjoyed this so much! I’m very much a beginner with painting and learning a lot through your videos!
I'm so glad!
I love this so much!! Please continue to share. 🎨
Loveli. It's noticeable in your paintings that the light is better in scotland and that subconsciously you are working with a brighter palette.

Beautiful work! It’s so cool to see how you progressed and developed. Really inspiring work.
Thanks Jared! Your gouache videos definitely helped me recently. I feel more confident, and that freedom makes it more enjoyable ☺️

Good paintings to!

Thank you! I've never had my paints freeze...but if it's that cold I don't stop to paint, just keep hiking 😂

Which water brush you think is the best... I have struggled in finding a good one...

*has literally never filled a sketchbook*
I have one sketchbook that has been going for about 7 years. I'm inching my way closer... year by year.
