Jeremiah 29:11 CANNOT BE PERSONALISE LIKE HE URGES
The verse does NOT say "For I know the plans YOU have for ME,” “plans to prosper ME and not to harm ME, plans to give ME hope and a future.!!
It's the basis of prosperity teaching and non-suffering theology!
This verse was written for the nation of Israel and then ONLY for a specific time (lest you think it's an enduring promise, Israel didn't enjoy prosperity and no harm forever) The very preceding verse makes this clear "This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place."
Whilst the comforting idea that God wants to prosper us in this misapplication might make us feel good temporarily ultimately when many of His disciples face non-prosperity and harm the pain will be all the greater!
Adele Moskina, I would like to say you’re a little “off the reservation” yourself. As a Christian sister you’re out of line with your terminology in addressing Pastor Buddy and his message. It was not polite. Also, as a sister in Christ you should have used wisdom and not involved yourself in seeking to correct a pastor, a man of God in a public forum. A private note or leaving it to a brother in the Lord to address the matter (if it even needed to be addressed) would have been best.
Aside from that, you need more study and insight. As a pastor, I teach on the passages and subject somewhat different than Pastor Owens but you are a little further out in the desert than you think. I have neither the inclination or space at present to help you understand that there IS far more to the story/passages than just the historical perspective.
In the interest of your time and mine, please excuse me, for using an A, B, C outline format for your consideration:
A. God is not trying to make historians out of HIS children yet there are things to be learned from Scripture history - Luk:24:44-45; Rev 15:4; I Cor 10:11 et.al.
B. The 70 years you referenced was true and historical, but seventy (70) like 12, 40 etc. is used symbolically in Scripture
C. There is a Babylon connection…. Yes, there was a historical Babylon, of course, but there is more than history. Study the context and start here: Rev 14:8; 16:9; 17:5 and all of Rev 18. Consider especially, “I heard another voice from heaven, saying, ‘Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues.’” (Rev 18:4) and, “And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints and of all who have been slain on the earth." (Rev 18:24) Sounds current, not just historical, wouldn’t you say?
I have much more to say but I’ll stop with the following: What Pastor Owens taught is not “the basis of prosperity teaching and non-suffering theology.” If you want to try to make a case for that you would have to go back to the Abrahamic Covenant but that’s for another time.
Lastly, I am not associated with Saddleback Community in any way other than as a member of the body of Christ. I’ve listened to the message twice now and think he did a good job and ministered to who-knows-how-many.
