Now when I fly I will sometimes wave down hoping someone will see me waving back. Life has really come full circle for me 🤷♂

@@RetiredFreeBird Can't say I agree, but maybe it depends on the Midwestern state. ...You should try Texas & then see if you still think Midwesterners are the most friendly. You'll have your mind blown. 🤣
I grew up on the west coast but my family originally came out here from Minnesota. Now I know why we are the way we are. We all apologize for things for no reason, hold the door, and wave everybody through the stops. People get my name wrong or bring me the wrong food and I just accept it so I don't bother them. I never knew it was a midwest thing!
Moved into Indiana from the Chicago suburbs (which I guess are as un-Midwesterny as the Midwest gets). The four-way stop thing blows my mind. It's easier and faster if folks just observe the traffic rules, but I guess it's more important to be nice. Plus it's a chance to wave.
FYI, legislators in Wisconsin are introducing a bill that makes it a Class B misdemeanor if you are let into a lane in traffic and neglect to thank that person.
The, "Midwest standoff"!🤣 Believe it or not, us FIPs in the Chicago suburbs experience this all the time...but maybe it's because no one here actually remembers the Rules of the Road.

The wrong name thing hits home. When I was in college in the 90s, I worked at a Target and there was one guy who always called me Chris. That is not my name, but I never corrected him on it. I didn't see him much anyway since he was one of the cart wranglers and I worked in the store. haha
When his cousin got t the hospital, his wife asked hi why he was late, and he told her She immediately forgave him and apologized that he had to go through that
As a born & raised Minnesotan, 1 of the flaws is Passive Aggressiveness. They will act polite and friendly to your face but if they are upset with you they will say or hint at it but in a Passive Aggressive none-confrontational way. Another flaw is the long goodbye, where if you say goodbye to a friend or family member generally it takes 30 minutes minimum. Finally, this video is fairly accurate for Rural/Small Town/Suburbs. But in the Urban/City environments it is much different.
Ahhh the Midwest Goodbye. A classic. My kids and I do this all the time. I am always amazed at how often, while on the phone with a family member, that one of us declares that they need to go to the bathroom. That seems to be a near foolproof strategy….yes, I said near but not always……MOM.
So true about my day being ruined by a boater not waving back...😢 There were only about a dozen boats on the lake at the time. What else ya gonna do out there but wave when the water is still 50 degrees???
The word "sorry" can have two functions. It can be an apology, or it can be an expression of empathy. If I say "I'm sorry I am late", I am apologizing for my actions. When I say "I'm sorry you feel bad", that means I understand how you feel and I am sorry for you. It doesn't mean I am apologizing for your illness. This, BTW, is not a Midwest thing. Anyone anywhere who has feelings expresses them with the word "sorry".
In the Midwest when you give the full wave or holding the wheel and give the pointer finger wave you expect something back. If not returned you instantly think not local or an asshole.
