How accurately does Civilization 6 portray Germany?

  • In this video, we're discussing how well Firaxis Games portrayed Germany in Civilization 6.
    Germany in Civ6 is led by Frederick Barbarossa, who was Holy Roman Emperor from 1155 to 1190. Its special abilities in the game revolve around an increased productivity of cities, which makes it a strong civilization to play and hints at the modern image of Germany as a productive powerhouse in Europe. But that isn't the main image of Germany that people had throughout history.

    I have to add that the skull and bone design on hats is not something unique to Germany it was actually quiet common especialy under cavelary and is still used by some till this day like the British royal lancers (a cavelary regiment)

    Very high quality video for such a new channel! As a German myself, it's quite refreshing for you to bring up our culture and not just lean into stereotypes with militarism. Barbasrossa's Germany is my favorite version in a civ game to date, and I'd definitely like to see more of these with other civs, such as Pedro II of Brazil. On any note, here's a like and a subscriber, and I look forward to your future content!

    To be a very small channel, you did a very good research. I do defend the idea of Barbarossa as the leader of Germany. He was a very cool addition and a new face (kind of), although we had a HRE Civ back in Civ IV. Keep doing well like this! You earned a new subscriber here.

    I understand your points, but as you've said the germany in game is effectively the HRE and called germany so as to not be confusing with rome and an easy way for casuals to understand who they are. They shouldve added a bismarck alt leader with militarism as his buffs to differentiate the two, but i think it was well done in that context

    A video on France in civilization would be cool, so sad they always go for a France seemingly based fully on the modern era. France in the Medieval era is so interesting, its sad they dont go for any leaders from the era like Charlemagne, Phillip II Augustus, Louis IX etc

    I mean there is alot of cool leaders to chose from. It doesnt have to be the 1800- present leaders. Our Medieval history is very rich the only thing is that The country Germany was split up in The Holy Roman Empire or different little kingdoms.

    • @historyinbits
      @historyinbits  Рік тому +3

      German medieval history is incredibly rich, yes! That‘s where we drew our main argument about Germany‘s cultural history from - but I‘d argue to use a Bavarian, Saxon, Prussian or Austrian leader as THE leader of Germany would not work. So Bismarck was a great choice and Barbarossa was actually a good idea too

    I liked this different take on Germany, but you have to be clear that the Holy Roman Empire was not Germany. Other civs get that more or less right. Trajan isnt called leader of Italy, but Rome. Vercingetorix is leader of Gallia (which is to be fair also a strech), not France. In my opinion the developers could have used a chancellor of the Weimar era. Sure, most of them aren´t even known to most Germans, but that´s in my opinion no argument. Would have loved an Ebert or Stresemann. Could still be production focused, but also diplomacy. That would be very different to most portails of Germany ingame.
