Technically, the biggest hint was in the first episode when Spike's ghost turns into EVERY big bad from each season going backwards. The Master says "we're going back to the beginning, the true beginning"

Jonathan had been a character on the series for so long, seeing him become a villain sucked. Buffy stopped him from committing suicide, he was the one that gave Buffy the award at their prom, and even fought alongside her against the mayor. Stupid Tucker's Brother.

Why would a MILITARY organisation make a control chip that makes vampires docile, but can turn them back into ravenous monsters on command? I can think of a couple of reasons...
I don't think she has done a lot of research on what militaries have tried to do if she thinks there isn't a reason. Militaries are screwed up, especially the good ole American hypocritical military that thinks it's ok if they do it, but never if another military does.
@@Pumpkin3.14pi I mean yeah MK ultra was and probably still is a huge problem and stain on the "trigger soldier thing" but... China goes so far as to harvest and use organs from prisoners, and they have a huge supply, then again When our media was going to cover it, new york times anchor asked to do the story when they were in china, 2 doctors were speaking about it casually at lunch, the new york times discouraged it and then fired her... So We are also terrible for not doing anything about it, I can only IMAGINE their military experiments. / Source "China Uncensored"
Yeah, it's clear that the point of the chips was to have demons as mind-controlled soldiers, just as the demons in the sewers, and the soldiers themselves were controlled. The part that kept them from attacking humans wasn't so demons could be safety released into the wild, but so they wouldn't be able to hurt the scientists.
I alaways believed that Xander was talking about himself in this example. But for Andrew's sake he twisted the story to say that Anya put the darkness inside the man. A bit of embelishment, but still partly true. They make the best Horror stories to tell. However I was never able to confirm my own theory about the story Xander tells.

*nods* When she says "I believe in you, Spike," that look on his face at 15:00 … OMG I remember being so angry at the immediate break-in. I wanted just a few more seconds to savor the beauty of that moment.
Up until the "tore his intestines out" stuff, Xander was talking about himself in relation to what Anya had done to someone who hurt her.
Andrew's 'oh god' cracks me up
It's interesting how Xander and Anya still have a sort of chemistry. The good cop / bad cop routine was hilarious, the more so because Andrew bought it.
In this season, Xander is finally all grown up, with a job, and responsibilities, and skills (related to building things) not inherited by a bad Halloween incident. The beginning of this episode where he is measuring the broken windows is a subtle reminder of this. Not the main point of this episode, but it resonates, with me, for some reason.
I like that the most "normal" character has a normie life... well, when he's away from the gang that is. And his fixing Buffy's house is, as you say, a good reminder of that, so I enjoy those little scenes that too.
It also feels like I'm watching my babies all grown up and having jobs and whatnot.
Xander is the heart. He holds the group together and mends them much like he's mending the house.

Xander is the "Mom".
I had a moment when I saw this episode when it first aired as a subtle explanation how everyone's house gets rebuilt after so much destruction. Xander uses his business to keep costs low on the Scooby gang.
You would think by now Xander would have those measurements memorized as that poor window has seen some epic destruction over the course of the series.
Three points: 1) Xander was very much describing himself, what with the heart replaced by darkness and yet continuing life with only emptiness to look forward to. Xander waxing poetic, then changing tracks with the intestines to hide his pain.
2) ASR getting confused about the soul, the trigger, and the chip is vaguely reminiscent of something I can't yet place.
3) You might recognize the "real vampire" from the monster in the Mutant Enemy logo, the one that says, "Grr. Argh." at the end of each episode.
So the "real vampires" are actually representative of Joss Whedon?!?!? 😂😂😂
The Phylia Vampire was a mutated version, not what a real vampire looked like. These are REAL vampires. The first vampires, not the hybrid human kind.
I think in the Buffyverse all vampires are human hybrids just to varying degrees (more human over time). Isn't the lore that before the last pure demon left the Earth it infected a human with a piece of itself and that was the first vampire, making that vampire a human hybrid.
Not to get on your case, but I think this qualifies as a spoiler.

actually the Pylea thing was a manifestation of his 'demon' self, not the vampire. A vampire is always a hybrid between purebred demons (the one we saw in Pylea) and humans (or atleast early evolutions of humans). These are early generation vampires, which is what new generation (more tainted by human traits) slowly mutate towards, like The Master, with time.

That conversation between Buffy and Spike was sooo great!! Loved his face when she said "I believe in you", because it's difficult to think someone could believe in you when you don't believe in yourself.

I didn’t figure it out first time either but to be fair to us it had been nearly four years.
I was a regular on the BtVS forums back in the day when these originally aired, including one which streamed live during the airing and I don't remember ANYBODY figuring the connection to Amends or that it was the first. So good on ya, Shan!! Your memory does amaze me, and I've been accused of never forgetting anything at times.

@@jakace2760 that's _your_ opinion. _My_ opinion is that Andrew was a great addition to season 7 and beats Johnathan by far. I'm satisfied with his role is season 7, I'm satisfied with his character growth in the comics, I'm satisfied with how he evolved throughout the Buffyverse. Johnathan was okay. Andrew was hilarious.

You started watching Buffy a little over a year ago. For most of US, Amends last aired 5 years before this did. Believe me, the vast majority of viewers were way behind YOU in regards to the First.
I honestly think that most of Buffy fans figured it out at the end of 7x01. With the first scene with the girl being chased in Istanbul and the end with the First taking every bad guy appearance.
I was on a very smart, very active Buffy board back in the day. We discussed and debated and theorized endlessly, and I don't remember any of us figuring out it was The First before this episode. I know it didn't dawn on me until maybe 10 seconds before Buffy figured it out :-)
@@DanielOrme Well, for my part, I remember it seemed obvious: the last scene of 7x01 with Spike and all the enemies was very reminiscent of Angel in his manor with Jenny Calendar and his other victims, specially when we see them morphing. I was not on any board back in the day though :-)
@@argo1221 In active fan site I was following the hardcore fans figured it out quickly, Bringers were dead giveaway. Lots of people (self included) had forgot the episode 'Amends' though and I would not have recognized it without hints from others. There were bunch of theories around, including that Dracula was actually manifestation of First Evil, and that First Slayer and First Evil were one and same (they both introduce themselves as 'The First').
@@terhazza The First Slayer theory is very interesting. I was myself a hardcore fan and I used to watch every season from the begining before the start of a new season, so when season 7 began and the "all villains scene" from episode 1, I was sure it was the First.

Love the Spuffy “I believe in you” moment. So good.
She does. She constantly notices call backs, actors and foreshadowing. She misses some things due to being young and not American, but the other thing makes up for it.
She's good at remembering stuff but she's really slow at figuring them out and she does get confused by stuff that's really not that complicated and has already happened or been explained. I acknowledge she has a good memory and she can sometimes figure stuff out pretty quickly but those times are pretty far and few between.

So how often do you think someone has to figure stuff out so that you are appeased? Obviously your benchmark is "pretty quickly" amongst others. How did a comment about someone calling Shan observant even kick off an comment about Shan being "really slow" and getting confused by stuff "that's really not that complicated"? I mean wow, you really want her to feel dumb, huh?
Edit: You said at the end she "sometimes" figures stuff out. But note that you framed it: you also imply that you think the rest of the time she is "really slow". That leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.

Truthfully, yes. Being very observant doesn't mean picking up on *everything* . That's not the "objective". I would say she is more observant than the average viewer. So yes, for me the description "very observant" is warranted and well deserved.
Dawn was a badass in this episode
Dawn gets such an undeserved bad rap. I get she was mostly pointless in season six but obviously she was very necessary for season five and then in season seven they made her an actual character.

I'm pretty sure the whole "She removed his heart and replaced it with darkness" thing that Xander's talking about is about him and how he felt when they broke up. the way he looked when talking about it is very indicative I think. And you really notice a change in his attitude when he starts talking about intestins, which is a thing he then made up to scare Andrew

As someone who was dumb enough to watch those films (thankfully not in theatres), "That'll do pig" cracked me up like not much else.
Pylea was the true essence of what a vampire who was infected into a human looks like. The vampire at the end is a true vampire unaffected by the taint of a human. An original vampire.
But that looks nothing like Klaus Mikaelson! LOL!

There was a look on your face when you went silent and leaned toward the screen. It was that "Oh my God, I'm starting to get this," look. So perfect, and I get chills watching it.

What we saw Angel in the other world was basically how a vampire face would look and work like there, since rules are different. What we see here are the REAL vampires, oldest and purest, almost untainted by human beings - as Giles said all the way in Season One - those beings walked the earth in the beginning and then eventually the vampires watered down into the normal vampires.
And makes sense that they look similar to Master since the older and more powerful a vampire grows, the more closer to a perfect real thing it would be. And Master was the oldest vampire we ever met till now.
Actually, I think Kissing Toast was supposed to be older still. He was so old his hands had actually become cloven.
@@spangelicious837 Kissing Toast was comparably old as he was implied to be at thousand years old. Master on other hand seemed to have knowledge older than that and even hundreds of years ago he already looked like he does now, which most likely means he was older, old enough to recognize true demons and dedicate himself into opening hellmouth.
I am actually very impressed that you remembered those guys from Season 3. A lot of first time watchers I have seen don't remember this. Bravo to you for figuring it out!

To answer your question "why would the initiative put a trigger in spike" its because they wanted to use him and the rest of the demons as weapons. To kill only when the initiative wanted them to and the first found a way to tap into that trigger.

Your Spike? He's my Spike! LOL. Another cliffhanger - I'll try to make it through two weeks of no Buffy reactions from you! More great (if confusing for first-time viewing) scenes and acting. Buffy's speech to Spike as to why she has let him live, that he really does have good in him if he would just see that, and continue to fight against the monster inside him, beautiful. I love my Spuffy babies!

Re: the trigger the Initiative put in Spike does make sense in case they wanted to ever use him as a weapon, they aren't just do-gooders. Programmers are always leaving backdoors in their programs for easy access.

Giles is still missing presumed dead; The First was playing our heroes; Andrew is back with Ghost Warren and Ghost Jonathan; Principal Woods was in the basement and buries Jonathan; Spike almost killing Andrew; Spike taken; Watcher's Council is destroyed; new Vampire introduced...doesn't he look familiar? This episode had so much good stuff.

One thing that always boggled my mnd is after Spike bit Andrew, and Buffy came down with the wet cloth, she told him what he did and he asked "who"? and she said "Tuckers brother". Spike would not know who Tucker was, he was only in The Prom. She should have said "Warrens friend"

The only thing the that the Initiative did was implant the chip in Spikes head to not kill living things. When Xander was talking about triggering useing the military as an example it was "The First" that was manipulating the chip by singing a song from his past to trigger him into attacking innocents.
OMG Shan! Finally! I just knew you would remember 3x10 "Amends". This is why I love watching you react. You remember things that happened early on in the series. So seeing you recognize these guys in robes was a freaking relief. And Shan, I don't mind you stopping to pause and think out loud your thoughts to make sense of what you're watching. I love it actually. I like hearing where your thoughts are at the moment. Also, I swear, Anya going off on Andrew and Xander was the most funniest thing in the season thus far LOL. Wow. Full circle. Yeah, we won't take it back to you to figured it out. Personnally, I hadn't, and even when Buffy said it I was like "What is she talking about ?". For my defense, back then, it was near four years that I saw "Amends" as I was still in school (yet university-like kind of school), I haven't enough money to buy myself the DVD's, and of course, on TV, it wasn't possible to pause the show to think about something, you'd have to keep up with the pace the show imposed you.
"What? No 'Kiss the Librarian cup'?" Good point! ...~16:20 I thought "Are you starting to recognize them?" I thought; 17:00 - Good on you, ASR! IIRC, I also had only seen Amends once at the time I watched season 7; I needed the spelling out at the end of this episode before I was sure of the Big Bad. Yet another great reaction!
I've always been impress by your ability to recall details and title of previous episodes, yes you ARE smart (as well as pretty, funny, empathetic and personable).
Jonathan doesn't even get a funeral he is buried in a unmarked grave outside of sunnydale high or at the bottom of the sunken hellmouth.

The Angel-beast is the purest form of the demon. The Uber vamp is like the first human turned vampire. Kind of like a vampire neanderthal. The Master was the oldest and closest looking to the ubervamp. Kakistos (the master vamp after Faith) was nearly as old. As vamps age the more they resemble the demons.
Fun fact, Harris Yulin aka Quentin Travers is American ... that blew my mind!
Guy's had a very long career. He was just in Netflix's "Ozark" very recently.

I had it spoiled by a rerun of amends the same day as the episode where all villains appears. If that rerun didn't happen I wonder how long it would have taken for me to actually figure it out.

Just to make it clear - without spoilers - The First can only take the form of people who have died/are dead. (Remember Buffy drowned in season one, when Xander resuscitated her). The show never really makes this clear, but Joss Weadon confirmed it in one of the commentaries. By the way, LOVE your channel, LOVE your reactions: please never stop.
According to Joss vampire lore when you are made into a vampire your soul leaves your body and a demon moves in. Now it is not specified that the demon is a vampire but the original vampires were demons. Presumably the original vampires looked something like these vampires, and the Master, while the thing which Angel became on Pylea was the demon which took him over when he became a vampire.
Yeah ok, we started to work it out about the same time. My mother, sister and I had almost the exact same conversation watching this scene lol and then as Buffy started to say who they were we sort of went “oh my god, the first”. I’d say the season really kicks off from here. The next 2 weeks are going to feel like an eternity lol

It was the other way around for me, I was actually too young to watch the first 4 seasons when they first aired in my country (except for a few reruns but not Amends) so I watched 5 through 7 as a whole first. So when I finally watched S3 / Amends much later, I was MINDBLOWN they introduced the First there already 😂 But you did good :)
