Dario, I can't thank you enough...you've made learning country guitar so much fun. I used to be a full on metal head only, but you've opened up a whole new door for playing some great music...Thank you!
Naturally Brent's playing this solo was off the charts great and Dario does a fantastic job showing us how to do it. Fantastic job, only wish I had your ears! :)
Very, very excellent! I've always enjoyed listening to that solo, but have had little means to see it put in segments with such accuracy! You make it look easy, but I know it is a challenge, for me. Thanks for posting!
I just got this lesson under my fingers! Best Instructional video i've ever seen; I'm very grateful for your effort and have subscribed to your channel. It's very inspiring.
Wow Dario - you even get all of the little accents and subtle aspects. This is a very cool solo from Brent Mason, and now I have a chance to learn it correctly. Thanks and Peace be with you
Just outstanding. Obviously, you are a tremendous player. Thanks so much for posting these! I am from Nashville and looking forward to finally learning these amazing, challenging licks! After a week, I'm finally through part one of this song, and can play it...1/3 the actual speed, but hey, baby steps. Looking forward to continuing my country guitar education. Thanks again, Dario!
Hey, thank you so much for posting this. You are an amazing picker, and have one hell of an ear to be able to pick all of this out. I learned the first guitar part years ago when the song first came out, but never learned the other parts. The part I was playing was never quite right, and thanks to you, I now see what I was missing/adding. I'm now in the process of learning the other two parts from you. Again, thank you so much for sharing this with everyone.
Can you do a lesson on the solo(s) in Freight Train? I've been trying to learn it for ages but I can't seem to get the rhythm down :( You teach so well!
It's just nuts the solos Brent Mason came up with over the years. I couldn't write anything like this in my lifetime and Brent probably did it on the 3rd take.
Hi Dario, this was back in 2011, so I was wondering if you still monitor this channel. I learned this but can only play it so fast...I guess more metronome time on it? How crucial is guitar action/ guitar itself in pulling this off. I see you are using a Nashville style tele...they are making great Mexico Nashvilles now with Noiseless pickups...just a sweet guitar for the money. I currently have a Line 6 JTV 59 USA model, and it is just an awesome guitar. The neck on it is a wider LP 50's style neck. It's tone is superior. It has a thick flame maple top, Hipshot tuners...I used to own a Korean one, and they look close in pictures, but in real life man you can just tell the difference visually as well as how they play and sound. Having said that, it's not a Tele in the way it feels of coarse. Are there any examples of anyone doing chick'n pick'n on line doing something as fast as this?
Any functioning electric should work for you, and by functioning I mean an electric that can keep in tune. You need to have fairly fresh strings and yes, probably a telecaster to really get "the sound." I have pretty good luck with strats as well, when I want a tremolo bar. I can play this kind of material on a Les Paul, but the sound isn't there. It's perfectly suitable for getting practice in and building up speed and technique, though. Chickin Pickin shows up occasionally outside of country music. If you search for it, you can find Zakk Wylde chickin pickin on a Paul. John 5 and Buckethead have also been known to do it from time to time.
great! I was thinking about learning this tune just because of the elec solos in it. That 2nd one on the record just rips. This will give me an easy way to learn it w/o slowing it down in Reaper and trying to find good fingerings. thx
Awesome vid! In the first lick of the first solo though, after the chromatic run, when u reach the 2nd string, its a pull off to that same string, sounding a B note, whilst u play the first string, which produces an E note.(1:40) Also your fingering for the chromatic run is quite unusual, why not use four fingers? Then in 2nd lick, it's a bend from 5th to 6th fret g-string, not a hammer-on. 3d lick starts on g-string 11th fret, bend up to 13. Keep up the good work!
The structure of the solo's and guitar work is correct but your phrasing is slightly different in parts but who ever can reproduce Brent Mason and Danny Groah ?? I prefer danny groah to brent mason and dont ask me why? Your pretty good on that ole tele sir ;-)
