I played and lost against The Locust God and his swarm of minions. I played mono white enchantments deck. But the next day game he was a no show. Reason not enough lands.
What do I love the most about your deck techs? You don't present one way to build it. You don't present two ways... You lay out a ton of options for the color pie you've chosen and cards/packages that do amazing and fun things. Nice job, as always, on this one.
I loved your take in this deck! i would love to throw out a few recommendations for fellow players of the locust god. 1. Library of leng is a 1 mana artifact that gives you no maximum handsize, and also lets you put cards you would discard on top of your library instead, adding some more control to your wheel effects. 2. mindwrack liege gives all your blue creatures +1/+1, and all your red creatures +1/+1, making your insects flying 3/3's. his other ability allows you to play any red or blue creature card from hand for only 4 mana, allowing you to get out your niv mizzet or psychosis crawler at instant speed. 3. Finally, windreader sphinx. it says, "whenever a creature with flying attacks, draw a card". this basically DOUBLES your swarm whithout having to rely on dealing combat damage to a player, like with coastal piracy or bident of thassa
I've only been watching you for a week, and I don't know why but your voice is soothing to me. Last night I went to sleep listening to your Neheb deck tech. Hoping for my under appreciated homeboy Scorpion god to get a deck tech though.
I know this is an older video and should probably take this comment to a newer one, but god i love your videos. So great. I love your voice, and especially think it's funny when you laugh a bit when talking about a particularly mean combo. The Locust God: Confused screaming as everything flashes through his mind (cards), and a beam of locusts fly out of him. Come to think of it, this might be the one commander deck to accedentally mill itself.

Already started brewing this guy, and just waiting for my Locust God card to arrive now. I noticed a lot of what I have put in or thought of was in the video. I am glad I am on the right track. Some great ideas for alternate wincons if I need them. I already did Lab Maniac and have Purphurous and Impact Tremors. I also added in Throne of the God-Pharaoh, since I will be turning insects sideways, I might as well damage everyone with each tapped insect, not just the opponents I attacked. ;) I might try the polymorph ideas after seeing how it runs. I liked those!! Great video as always, two wings up!!
I’m happy you mentioned ideas unbound because my friends consistently tell me it’s bad but like... if you cast your hand then you don’t have a discard down side; 2 mana draw 3 (get 3 locusts)
I have been going through sum of these old deck tecs. There is a ton of new cards for a lot of them. Might be cool to revisit a few. The locust god is still fun for me so many years later.
You'll love this combo man, Purphoros(Enough Devotion to become a creature) + Curiosity + Locust God you draw a card and make a token Purphoros Triggers 2 damage to each opponent Curiosity sees Purphoros dealing damage to each opponent, so you draw a card for each opponent Purphoros will deal 2 damage for each new token made from drawing cards Repeat and scales fast say you have 4 players, you draw a card, 2 damage to each opponent and draw 3 more cards, 3 more triggers for Purphoros and in term 9 more triggers for Curiosity
I like this deck tech already, even at 2:15. This stuff is crazy, and I have a Niv-Mizzet the Firemind deck and I don't actually run most of this stuff, but I just slammed a hella draw spells in the deck to make planning almost irrelevant. Another fun thing to do in a deck like this: Last Thoughts, a 4-drop draw a card that can be ciphered away and re-CAST every time the encoded creature hits (say, any one of your flyers over an opponent that doesn't have them), causing Arjun to cycle your hand out any time that creature hits. Stupidly ridiculous. You could also run Mizzix of the Izmagnus, which makes your drawspells basically worth the colored mana in it's casting cost, so there that stuff is
Late to comment, but! I have built this deck several times. Sometimes I go spikey with it, but my favorite version of this deck is my $58 budget version. Everyone expects the big plays from this deck. I like to use budget draw spells, cuz it doesn't make you a target at the top of the game. And it's still super good!
Oh Jumbo, one of the new cards from the Commander 2017 set Kindred Discovery is a must here. Choose Insect when you cast it, draw a card with The Locust God on the field and then proceed to draw your library and make that many 1/1 Locusts
Ooo shared animosity... good suggestion. I'm going to have to fit that one in :) May I also suggest Murder of Crows? It's a dirt cheap card, and it combos off Skull Clamp, Ashnod's Altar, Vicious Shadows, Blasting chamber, etc.. Also there's 3-4 other red creatures that do the same thing as Purphoros you could add to the deck or even substitute if you wanted to save on the deck build. It's hard to beat Purphoros though because he's indestructible and not a creature (for all practical purposes, the game will be long over before your devotion to red makes him a creature).
Kindred discovery paired with locust god is an insane combo, then you only have to loot once with his ability to create infinite insects, and infinite draw, or use a wheel effect and do so even more. And to get around the casting cost of cards like omniscience or big boys like kozilek, if you have an ashnods altar out, use a cheap wheel effect, sac the tokens to ashnods altar and boom, huge mana
Shade Ryan technically that creates two colorless mana for it, training grounds makes it two colorless less to activate, plus it doesn't have the sacrifice a creature condition, so they have a similar outcome but not do the same thing, that one creature could be the difference between a win or loss, personally I am running both in the deck since both are very useful
kind of true but it still isn't the same thing, you are only going to be left with one creature at the end of your draws, training grounds leaves the other creatures while still only costing a b/r, if you draw with his ability literally 2 times you are now up a creature and the more you draw the more you are up
Library of Leng would be a good touch, I have it in one of my wheel type decks. You control what you discard and when, pop it to the top of your library to draw again anyway.
Could you please do a deck tech on The Scorpion God. I feel like it's the worst one for commander, but still a Rakdos commander that has a draw effect on it seems pretty sweet.
when i saw the locust god spoiled i was super excited. i've always wanted to run a u/r token strat with dragonshift in edh. weirdly specific i know but now i can finally do that lol
Throne of the God Pharoh is a sleeper in my locust god deck. Wheel twice, swing for 14. Then drop it for major surprise damage in your end step. Fateful Showdown is another great surprise. Expensive removal, but instant speed, and a nice one sided wheel that can get you some surprise blockers.
There's always the classic niv-mizzet and curiosity combo, which works with 2 out of 4 niv-mizzets, which is not bad. I feel mean using it when niv is a commander, but when it's just one of the creatures it feels more fun.
This is actually the reason I'm getting into commander it is going to be my first commander (to me drawing cards is my favorite thing so this commander just is everything I want)
Building a commander deck is like opening a bag of Lay's. You really don't stop after one go. If you fancy drawing cards, might I suggest Sram for your next deck?
Have a Nekusar the Mindrazer draw/discard punishment deck that I'm looking to cram God-Pharaoh and the three gods into... will be a very, very mean deck.
alot of people didn't care about arjun but look now he's strong. people should've liked him way before had a deck for him for awhile I have so much fun with him!
As fun as it sounds I think I'll keep most of the wheel effects in Nekusar. Locus god dodging commander tax by going into my hand is why I like him and scarab god so much. Any targeted removal could be played after I try to wheel. I'd definitely run a few and I'll keep locus as the 99 in Nekusar but as a commander I'd go with a fun izzet spellslinging draw deck.
Im probably gonna change this deck around a bit to get more cards that say you dont have a maximum hand size and add counterspell as well as some more control.
i am definitely going to be making scarab god and locust god and i love your ideas. Will we be getting a scorpion god deck tech as well? maybe even a nicol bolas flavor deck with all 3 gods in it???

So....Nekusar without the black cards? Bug Boy is going into my Nekusar deck along with the Scarab God. The wheel effects should give Scarab good targets in my opponents graveyard.
You have a ton of card draw and wheels. You mentioned Laboratory Maniac a couple times too. Why not Omniscience to wheel through your whole deck for free?
I really like standstill with The Locust God. Make it so no one wants to play a spell and you are just slowly building an army with your draw per turn and maybe desolate lighthouse, geier reach sanitarium and mikokoro, center of the sea
The Locust Gods it just bananas. I wonder if we will ever get a really good Izzet commander that doesn't scream COMBO! at the the top of its lungs. PS: locusts are great sources of protein!
I am building a Bolas deck based on the 3 gods. Fun combo: Locust God + Scorpion God + Blowfly Infestation = Unlimited draw. For Fun if you add Nest of Scarabs, you keep your flying/haste locusts.
*wince* During the prerelease, one of my opponents pulled Neheb the Worthy, Scorpion God AND Scarab God; he never got to the Scorpion God but it was NOT staring down the other two on the same battlefield.
Personally I go with mostly the token aggro strategy, but I’ve also had a lot of fun milling my opponents, cycling their decks back into their library, then milling them again for the win. Just for giggles. XD
I took my Locust God a bit different. I built Kess wheels and while it's only 70% complete, it still is hilarious! It's nice to have multiple tutors and multiple ways to reuse them. Arjun is dumb in the deck.
An infinite combo i found was Windreader Sphinx, Breath of Fury, and the locust god. It just wins the game if they dont have fliers. or use flash giving cards to instant speed equip breath of fury
I just thought if you had Ral Zerek plus a few spells to get extra turns plus Mizicts mastery that's what I could guess as infinite turns? Someone could fix my view of things but I like Ral Zerek.
first of: great video! im curently building my own niv cricket deck, but i have a problem: i would like to include "laboratory maniac" as an alt win con. but how can i bring him back to hand/battlefield, if i weeled him into the graveyard? (i havent found any red orde blue GY recursion :/ )
can you post your personal decklists as well? I'm not gonna remember all the cards you say so after a deck tech if I want to build a similar deck it would be great to not have rewatch the video to remember all the cards
James S This can be built on a budget easily. There are expensive wheels (time spiral, wheel of fortune, ) but lots of cheap ones too. Skullclamp and ashnods are cheap, as is psychosis crawler. Brainstorm, frantic search, arcane denial...lots of good, cheap cards that draw you cards. A great budget card in my locust god deck is Throne of the God Pharoah. Wheel twice for around 14 locusts, attack with all of them, then drop the Throne - 14 dmg to all opponents. Don't remember if he mentioned them or not ? But coastal piracy and bident of thassa are 2 great cards that reward you for attacking, but in return protect you because you draw and make new locusts.
I have a Locust God deck and it's a lot of fun! If you're running Coat of Arms and Impact tremors why not also run Warstorm Surge? It sees the adjustment from coat of arms before it deals the damage so have fun making bugs and hitting someone for 20 :3 here's my decklist: tappedout.net/mtg-decks/the-brood-swarm

buddude31 This, minus the token stuff, plus Curiosity, Ophidian Eye, and maybe the other one too. I had a Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind deck that I converted to a Locust God deck. I only had to swap out 7 cards.

A little edit for you. When you play distant melody you name insect. We all know that's what you ment.

Murder of Crows is a perfect suggestion. It's not well known, it's cheap, but it's powerful with this strategy. Great idea!

You could also use Dragonshift potentially for 4/4 blue red dragons, so you can boost them with Mindwreck Liege to make them 6/6.

A few things in my build that work well are sphinx's tutelage, raid bombardment, runehorn hellkite, lightning volley and master the way

Any wheel effect with any copy effect and swing away. Or u can lab man/ thassas oracle/ jace draw your library out.
What I like is that he can be built on a budget and still run well.
Keep Watch is a powerful blue 3 drop instant that draws you a card for each attacking creature.
That Magus, top, sculptor combo is wild. I've never thought of that before

I've been also running him in animar because animar is busted.
In my playgroup we banned consecrated sphinx. It just got absurd when 2 players had one out, which happened too often.

Ashnod's Altar and Skullclamp are infinite draw + colorless mana. Attach clamp, draw 2 cards, make 2 tokens. Sac one, get 2 mana, attach clamp, net 1 mana, draw 2 cards, repeat.
Illusory ambusher also goes quite nicely in this deck.

tempted to build with zada and mirrorwing dragon in the 99 plus all their cantrips. polymorph is cool

This list is looking quite competitive, so might I suggest more fast artifact mana.

I took my Locust God a bit different. I built Kess wheels and while it's only 70% complete, it still is hilarious! It's nice to have multiple tutors and multiple ways to reuse them. Arjun is dumb in the deck.
An infinite combo i found was Windreader Sphinx, Breath of Fury, and the locust god. It just wins the game if they dont have fliers. or use flash giving cards to instant speed equip breath of fury

I just thought if you had Ral Zerek plus a few spells to get extra turns plus Mizicts mastery that's what I could guess as infinite turns? Someone could fix my view of things but I like Ral Zerek.
Ral Zerek is one of the best applications of Krark's Thumb.

im curently building my own niv cricket deck, but i have a problem: i would like to include "laboratory maniac" as an alt win con. but how can i bring him back to hand/battlefield, if i weeled him into the graveyard?

Neheb with Purphoros and any wheel effect can just win you games outright
Nin the pain artist is fun to use, kill one bug with a bunch of damage and draw that many cards

James S This can be built on a budget easily. There are expensive wheels (time spiral, wheel of fortune, ) but lots of cheap ones too. Skullclamp and ashnods are cheap, as is psychosis crawler. Brainstorm, frantic search, arcane denial...lots of good, cheap cards that draw you cards.
A great budget card in my locust god deck is Throne of the God Pharoah. Wheel twice for around 14 locusts, attack with all of them, then drop the Throne - 14 dmg to all opponents.
Don't remember if he mentioned them or not ? But coastal piracy and bident of thassa are 2 great cards that reward you for attacking, but in return protect you because you draw and make new locusts.

I have a Locust God deck and it's a lot of fun! If you're running Coat of Arms and Impact tremors why not also run Warstorm Surge? It sees the adjustment from coat of arms before it deals the damage so have fun making bugs and hitting someone for 20 :3 here's my decklist: tappedout.net/mtg-decks/the-brood-swarm

I had a Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind deck that I converted to a Locust God deck. I only had to swap out 7 cards.
I love decks like this but my concern is always decking myself
TCGBattling Master Personally, I find decking myself to be funny. it's a great way to lose.
TCGBattling Master put a couple time spiral type wheels that shuffle your graveyard in, or an eldrazi titan. The worry is gone.
I know it's similar but could you do a Niv mizzet deck tech?
