A large portion of the island's mass is composed of phosphate, which has been heavily mined for almost a century, decreasing the size of the country. The nation's "capitol" isn't even on the island any more; the government occupies a building in Australia while there are a few villages on the island.

Wow, before I watched I named 10 countries that i believed would be on the end of the list and my first 2 were Sao Tome and principe and Nauru. Coincidentally they were the least known.
Important detail: -Only the first try of each user is taken in account in the statistics, so a lot less than 27 million takes, since many users take it many times. -All countries have "type-ins", so for example, Sao-Tome or even Leeihctchenstienn for Liechtestein (and capital letters, accents, spaces and punctuations aren't considered), so the spelling argument is very partial, since the site allows many wrong ones. -Ukraine maybe add a (very limitd) boost to the United Kingdom, since it starts with "uk" and UK in accepted for United Kingdom (as many other ones like England or even Great Britain). Otherwise, thanks for this sotlight to this awesome website whih JetPunk is. I don't think I'd heard of Nauru before tbh. How many people noticed that the globe at the end was orientated such that south was up, making Africa upside down compared to a map and Antarctica towards the top of the picture?
Man, back when I was like 13 I would sit at the library computer and do the Sporcle countries quiz like every single day. It's hard to get them all even if you do know all the countries because it's hard to keep track of what you've typed and what you haven't. Sometimes I'd forget St. Lucia or something but then on other days I'd somehow skip over like, Austria
I genuinely would have not known any of the nations, with the exception of memory recall when it comes to one or two south pacific nations (for the quantity and the mix of sovereign and non-autonomous nations throughout), as well as the Atlantic arc (antillies/indies/caribas) for the same reasons. Now obviously spelling could arise as an issue for some nations, but usually hasn't posed too much of an issue for me. Dyslexia is another key factor in me mixing up nations. But I take deep pride in my knowledge with this kind of basic geography, and have multiple times named off every nation on every continent as well as the world in videos. My passion for basic geography ensures my brain recalls the entire world, somehow haha. Though I will admit, quantity definitely can F with me, as well as my mental process of viewing maps in my head while naming countries off if just verbal, as mixed together, I've rather often found myself having somehow forgotten a notable european nation or two. So far in order it has been Switzerland, England/UK and Hungary. Its rather funny, but also quite painful when I realize how easy I find it to have forgot a single nation when naming them all off the top of my head. I usually remember whatever nation I forget within about a minute to three minutes after I complete it.
Just did it and got 188 out of 196, though TECHNICALLY I got 189, but I only remembered Fiji with two seconds left. :) The nations I forgot where Antigua & Barbuda, St Kitts & Nevis (as I aforementioned I tend to), Monaco & Vatican City (which was the result of having to rush through it, but also I sincerely believe Vatican City is illegitimate no matter what law or the international community believe and say, and probably should discount Monaco too for similar reasons), Singapore, Brunei (sometimes I forget Singapore because it is a city state, and I have never forgot Brunei until today (again, time was definitely a factor in my forgetting it)) and Tuvalu (I ALWAYS FORGET TUVALU SOMEHOW!)
Interesting video! ppl playing this are probably more or less into geographics to begin with, I mean there is no way in hell 23% of all the ppl could pin point Sao Tome and Principe :D

Not unsurprising of course, but I feel like geography nerds have to go the extra mile with learning the correct pronunciation of nations. This sounds really critical but I don't intend it that way, this is minor and I love your videos.
The only reason I knew about Nauru is because it was at one time the richest per capita selling the island off as a phosphate mine until the phosphate mine was worked out and then they invested in a Broadway show that went flop and so they are among the poorest per capita.
