And indeed how close some of the battles came to Washington... places that could now be considered outer suburbs of the city.
I think Madrid and Wellington was the case where capitals can be as far as physically possible on Earth. Both cities are almost antipodes - meaning - located exactly on the other side of the globe
Must be a close call with Asunción and Taipei?, About 100km off antipodes. Interestingly there is a large Taiwánese community in Paraguay, and Paraguay is the largest country to recognise Taiwan as opposed to Beijing. Beijing and Buenas Aires also not too far off being Antipodes.

An interesting note about Guyana and Trinidad - they have very similar histories and Guyana is probably the closest country to Trinidad culturally. Guyanese people also generally consider themselves to be part of the Caribbean.

I don't think anyone with any sense considers Trinidad and Tobago as part of North America. For that matter, Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire would clearly be grouped with South America as well. I think the Caribbean is a bit of a grey area, and really not part of either 'continent', I consider it an oceanic community like Oceania. But if we have to put them with one or the other, I'd put the Greater Antilles with North America and the Lesser Antilles with South America. Naturally the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos, and Bermuda would also be grouped with North America, just as the Galapagos and Falklands would be grouped with South America.
@@brianarbenz1329 according to whom? Because if you consult another 'authority', you will get a different answer. There is no consensus, island nations are often grouped with the nearest large continent when discussing geography. Rome has a population of about 3 million people while the independent nation of Vatican City has 1000 permanent residents but, of course, is entirely surrounded by the Eternal City! Nicosia, Cyprus (Europe) and Beirut, Lebanon (Asia) are capital cities on different continents closer to each other than La Valetta and Tripoli. around 244 km, and even Beirut, Syria is closer to Nicosia (323 km).
Cyprus is in Asia, it is only politically European. The closest would be Istanbul which is partly in Europe and partly in Asia, so the distance between them is basically the width of the Bosphorus Strait which is basically a river with salty water.
The answer of Trinidad and Tobago being either in North or South America is quite simple, neither. It is part of the Caribbean subregion which alongside North, South and Central America make up what most people in the continent know as America. I think countries like this only serve to expose how arbitrary diving America into two can be and why it makes much more sense to look at it as one, like it is originally supposed to be and is already recognized by many.
I learned that all the Caribbean countries are technically part of North America. Since there are seven continents and all countries kinda need to belong to at least one of them. But I guess it depends where you are from.
@@meron7700 that is my point tho. It doesn’t make much sense to assign the Caribbean to either north or south because they are their own distinct subregion within the larger American continent. It doesn’t have to be 7 continents, many places learn them as 6 counting only one America. And people being form a different country shouldn’t really factor in this case.
It depends on your definition of continent. Europe is a separate continent due to cultural and historical, not geographical, factors. That would imply that North and South America should also be separate. Otherwise there should be five continents with America and Eurasia as two of them. Or maybe four with Afro-Eurasia.

American children grew up thinking their yards were antipodal to China, and a few of us (yes, I did this once) grabbed shovels to make the journey.
It turns out almost all in the lower 48 states are antipodal to the Indian Ocean, despite our childhood zeal.
@user-rf8nr9ix5z just checked. The antipode for Bishkek is in the Pacific ocean 😄
Buenos Aires is antipodal to Beijing, Harare to Honolulu.
How about Lisbon and Wellington?

Caribbean nations are not considered to be in North America, geographically or politically.
@@brianarbenz1329 according to whom? Because if you consult another 'authority', you will get a different answer. There is no consensus, island nations are often grouped with the nearest large continent when discussing geography. Only Oceania is regularly defined as a distinct entity, whenever I see the Caribbean discussed in the context of geography, it's always grouped with the Americas. I get that it has its own oceanic tectonic plate, however.
@@Siansonea What authoritative source would say the Caribbean nations are in North America?
@@brianarbenz1329 there is no "authoritative" source. There is no consensus. People on this planet can't even agree on how many continents there are. I will say though that Seterra/GeoGuessr groups the Caribbean with North America, so do with that information what thou wilt.
I wonder what happened to Central America, as it seems a lot of people simply merge them into North America, which should be only Mexico, the USA and Canada. I'm not an authority, but I know people from those countries, and they surely don't classify themselves as north americans, but instead as "centroamericanos", it is said in Spanish.
Rome and Vatican City have got to be in 1st place!
Rome has a population of about 3 million people while the independent nation of Vatican City has 1000 permanent residents but, of course, is entirely surrounded by the Eternal City! Also, the absolute ruler of Vatican City (the Pope) is ALSO the Bishop of Rome- the bishopric's spiritual leader but not the temporal ruler the larger municipality.

Nicosia, Cyprus (Europe) and Beirut, Lebanon (Asia) are capital cities on different continents closer to each other than La Valetta and Tripoli. around 244 km, and even Beirut, Syria is closer to Nicosia (323 km).
Yep - the fact on the video was incorrect
South America does not want to claim any country that does not speak a latin language or has a latino population. Hence, Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago does not belong. Distance from the other country's territory is more relevant than the other country's capital. An attack on Seoul isn't coming from Pyongyang. It's coming from directly across the nearby border. Ottawa isn't that close to DC, for example, but it's very close to the US. Copenhagen is close to Sweden without being near Stockholm.
Copenhagen is literally on the border. I assume there are quite a few such countries, but this one's prominent because of ancient rivalry between the two nations.

Some big city in South Korea even further from Seoul, than Seoul to North Korea 🤣
well they didnt choose, the country was split between the u.s. and ussr. the border was arbitrarily drawn by these two powers. korea was once one country, 73 years ago. the korean war solidified borders, and seoul and pyongyang were the largest cities and historic capitals of ancient kingdoms on the peninsula. war is unlikely to occur even though we are enemies because the capitals are so close, thats the saving grace/advantage of having two enemies capitals next to each other. nuclear warfare is highly unlikely because itd be suicidal given the close distance, spillover of radiation
