Equivalent version of this today would be people standing still on their phones/split in groups of 3 discussing 'their next move'. This is such a sanctimonious cringey wrong-generation comment, but that's the truth. I wish I'd been 20 back in the mid aughts instead of the late teens. I remember cool stuff like seeing college kids shoulder to shoulder along each floor of a hotel downtown during Mardi gras. Like just lined down it dancing and a crowd on the ground dancing during the middle of the day. I pass that hotel every Mardi gras and it's just scattered people going here/there. Same number of people, everyone disconnected. F**ing sad man Give me the solar flare tbh

It’s almost like you can see that they’re not taking it seriously but in little moments you can tell they understand they’re in the middle of something very special
What a time to be alive! This was the tail-end of "humanity" in my opinion, right before technology transformed from being a simple tool, to being a lifestyle. Look how connected everyone is with the world, how everyone is genuinely having fun and is living in the moment. This song perfectly captures the 2000s my eyes and seeing such an early rendition of it fills me with nostalgia for a time in which I was too young to experience. When this particular performance took pace, I was -1 years old. I often long for the days around when I was born and get strong anemoia from those times (also including from the 80s and 90s). Technology was primarily at home or in the office only, the phones you carried were rather limited and that separation from technology really made the world feel alive I think. Instead of relying on technology in our day to day lives, people actually used to rely on each other.
Crazy that this was 4 years before Oracular Spectacular came out and it's exactly the same.. All the lyrics are in place, just everything. What a great little slice of MGMT history these videos are.
Not production or vocals, but absolutely the fundamental elements are unchanged...melody, lyrics, structure. Also yes, many of the production choices are already present.
Having a hit record, playing it to people who have the time of their lives when they hear it must be an incredible feeling. The happiness in this video all around is amazing.
@zecks5079 my bad for the confusion I used hit record as a hit with the people. I know that this song eventually transpired as a true hit record in the industry.
It’s videos like these that makes me appreciate youtube! The audio of this quality is just superb for a recorder of that era. Just wow! Goated camera man for capturing this historic piece
Our synthesis with AI technology will be near enough complete within several years and footage like this will be as relatable and recognisable as if it was a recording of a civilisation from thousands of years ago. The future isn’t what it used to be.
This is what musics about. These guys embodied what matters, friendship.. fun.. and just goofing around not taking things too seriously. Really special moment before they hit the big time with this
Imagining traveling back in time to tap someone in the audience on the shoulder and whisper in their ear "This song will define a generation. You're witnessing history right now"
A time (I lived by the way) where there were no phones to point and watch life thru…We just danced, enjoyed the vibe and people around us and lived in the moment.
i've seen their early performance from of "this must be the place" about a million times, but I've never seen this footage before. and wow. they're genuinely such amazing artists and creatives, even if they're just messing around. they are a tremendous inspiration to me and part of the reason why I'm applying to wes this year.
I’m a 31 year old broken musician who has tried and failed tried and failed, lost bands left and right due to ppl Briton drugs or even destroyed by my own hands. Seeing the joy and smiles in these younger days and the joy has brought tears to my eyes. Humans are beautiful by design and sometimes we can see into the light through these cracks in time.
@@mikediva I’m glad you saw this video Mike. We actually worked together on an Old Spice spot. I animated the singing heads. Also recreated that room in 3D for Milkblood
Brings tears to my eyes. These guys are just beautiful and understand things, in such a spiritual way that it’s so touching. Clearly their brains were touched by the divine, and understand so much and can say it so eloquently. I am so lucky to have been blessed with this band in this timeline in existence. And be the same age as them. Thank God for blessing us with them.
my very first concert was us open to see mgmt when i was 16.... im 30 now!! this song still slaps and take me back.... "Decision to decisions are made and not bought... But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot, I guess not" love that line.
These guys deserve to be bigger than they are. I remember the first time I heard this song smoking weed with my friends in my parents mini van and my mind being blown
Such a good song and they had no clue it would be the hit it would. They were only messing around and poking fun and pop music at the time but they did it so well they totally blew up. I love MGMT to this day
I recall those times as being as exciting as they were unpredictable, but above all how fascinating it is now to see the creative gold young brains produce. As pure as it gets. Recreating this level of musical purity beyond the age of thirty is almost impossible. Great melody, and if you replace the word "control" with "enjoy" this song has a whole different perspective.
@brockgan8941 Labrinth broke through at the age of 23 if I'm not mistaken, but your point still stands. Certainly some good music about from "older" musicians.
I adore this song mainly because my 6 year old son has loved it almost since he was born. I hope both he and his little brother both get to experience the simple joys in life of the friendship, freedom, energy, love and music you can clearly feel from this video. Life is so complicated these days, I just want them to be young, full of fun and happy. Thank you MGMT and whoever uploaded this! My family loves dancing and living in the moment to this epic tune just like we can all see it was obviously ment to be loved! ❤❤
Acting out, and having fun! The magical time, transcending from kids to being adults. Starting to put your life into perspective and realise that you have a gift and a depth in you, that you found just by messing around with your best friend. Not wondering what tomorrow would bring, but only how to have fun in the moment. You can actually see the insecurity and nerves drop off of them. Wonderful! People connecting with You in presence and boosting the ember of something magical! This brings so many feelings and I believe that MGMT would give anything to feel this moment again. I know, I would give anything, to experience my youth with my friends again.
This is truly awesome, didn't realise they had the song for as long as they did. Makes you really think about the journey and length of time before a song can see the light of day and commercial appeal.
How did youtube know that this is exactly what we all needed on December 1st 2024?
Right?
I'll question the algorithm with suspicious intent another day 🎶
how is this possible?
cause it was posted 3 days ago maybe
TikTok, UA-cam, they’re amazing!
I miss this world so much.
And this is after it got substantially crappier post 9/11...

Thank god someone got this on film
i’d add to that, thank god only 1 person got this on film. Nice that everyone else was vibing :)
Unbelievable that the song was already like completly finished 5 years before the EP came out :O

2003 was an amazing time. Right before cell phones and social media ruined everything.
Cell phones were big in 2003 BUT they weren’t smart phones and they were used for calling and texting people instead of mindless scrolling
