- Out in demanding conditions for rough minimalistic camping. As long as it was cold I was fine but when things start to melt it doesn't matter what you do. Things get wet. But I managed to keep the sleeping bag dry and that's the important thing. New pack turned out to be water proof thankfully. Second camp was a struggle with the fire. Not so fun when it happened but it gave me some strange sensation. It's like before.. when I first started doing this. I fought those battles constantly. Some I won and some I lost. Sorry I did not shoot the last part. I simply was too tired and just about had enough. Im getting a better head cam soon so I can turn something on and forget about it in those situations.
That wool sweater I have is a life saver. It warms very good even when moist. I really am not fond of gore tex and modern polyester materials. I have stuff with me but I usually end up just using my natural stuff, and modern materials turn completely worthless when wet. Ground cover and sleep mat however are modern and works fine. Rain clothes I struggled with constantly for years, many years ago, and never found something that made me comfortable. They do not breath and you get wet anyway. The rain poncho is my thing even though they are pretty bulky moving around in. In recent years I found it's better to have several layers of wool. It's like you become and animal with fur. It works for light rainy conditions when you have to work hard. You seldom see me use modern gear and that is for a reason. What I like about modern gear is its light and let you travel with ease. But every single time I use it something breaks. I hate that. But every outing and situation is unique.
I do not want to live without the Poly stuff. I use it when I need it. Mostly as a complement, I use it but I never trust it. The reason for not having my beloved canvas tarps, lavvus, or tents this time was I needed to try out this idea I had of a tweaked forester tarp setup hugging a tree. My lavvu would be too small for this. The tarp I'm using here is a big 12x12 (4x4m). Really solid solution that worked excellent. Weird but nice feeling to sleep like that next to a tree. It's like you get an amplified feeling of security in a way. (Like a bear would care mauling a dude against a tree instead of out in the open? ;) But I sure missed my lavvu at second camp. Thing you notice with the light big stuff is its so cold camping with. Canvas Lavvus are warm. With the lightweight tarps you really need the fire, but the poly fabric does not go well with fire I'm afraid. Before I started using canvas, years before UA-cam, I remember buying a new DD for every trip. That is partly because I'm always trying out new things. Taking risks in a way to try out an idea. But that is what I do or I would have gotten tired of this job a long time ago. Maybe you noticed I'm an odd bird never doing something exactly the same way twice. And I have to have the equipment that survive that, for it to be sustainable, so it's any point with doing things at all.
EDIT: Also got a good question from Tina, one of my subscribers. She asked why this setup with the tree? So I thought I might include my response to her here also:
In my area its pretty much impossible to find flat ground. You sometimes have to walk hundreds of meters to find a semi flat bedding for just one person. For a family tent you can walk a lot further in vain. Usually you find a bedding in an opening, for ex between two trees. You set something up like a tarp by tying a string to a tree or place your self standing tent. With the tree hug system I can gain a lot of ground in my search at where I normally don't look. Its a very protected kind of shelter because of the shape of the whole structure. That aint blowing down because the wind gets nothing to hold on too. Last but not least, the temperature under a spruce tree is several degrees warmer than out in the open. The only downside is the tree itself takes up a lot of space inside the shelter. But thats not an issue for one person with a bag.

Oh, a now tarp set up! I like it, especially since I usually carry a 10x10 Aquaquest tarp and it's usually raining here in winter (Oregon, USA). I also have problems with rain gear. Because I'm a 50-something woman with a double mastectomy, nothing fits and I alternate between sweat and cold, constantly. Wool is the only thing that works with me, and layering. I have rain gear, but I hate using it. Thank you for all you do to get these amazing videos out to us. I appreciate the diversity of your gear! And your videos are gorgeous!

Brilliant video yet again, I am always so pleased when I get a notification that you have posted a new video. I now always cut off the tie out points on a new tarp. I then spray about a 20cm area around the tie out with contact adhesive. I then stick duct tape over it and do this on both sides. I then sew on a stronger tie out and all around the edge of the tape about 1 cm from the edge. If you then put the tarp in a warm area for a couple of days the soft glue on the tape seals all of the needle holes and is totally water tight. The 1st one I did like this is about 4years old and the tie outs are still ok although the rest of it is now no good.

I’ve done flint and steel, char cloth, charred punk…bow and drill…but I WILL shamelessly toss in a homemade fire starter under those conditions! Practicing is great, but when you NEED a fire, no holds barred. Shame about the tarp tie out popping out. I hope it was under warranty! I have a similar tarp, my friend has one even bigger. We have created a shelter big enough to cover both our hammocks while cranking the heat in a Biolite stove in the dead of winter. Takes the right trees and a mile of string but hey, it’s all fun in the outdoors! OMG I love your videos, thanks so much!

Great video. very nice find with the flat rocks for the first fire, I dream of finding rocks like that most around here are round river rock., also nice to see you make a video about a real fire lighting in the rain and damp. all to often i see videos all set up one spark and hey presto an instant raging fire., I know all to well how frustrating it can be spending an hour or more just to get a fire to a sustainable level. again nicely done keep them coming.

I'm glad you shared the fire footage at the end. A fire always has a soothing effect and it translated well your final ability to get there after such a difficult situation. It also reminded me a Jack London's short story ("To Build a Fire") even though the circumstances were less dire. The Tree Hugger shelter was completely new to me and looks quite cosy. I recently camped for 5 days in mild but very wet weather, and the one half day that it did not pour with rain I managed to get a fire going and burning well. What a difference a fire makes! I had an alternative means of cooking, but a fire lifts the spirits and life seems easier. I always look forward to your videos, thank you.

Das Problem mit dem Feuer machen, kenne ich auch zu gut. Besonders aktuell ist es äußerst schwierig und oft unmöglich. Peinlich wird es nur, wenn ich es stundenlang probiert habe und meine Frau schiebt mich zur Seite und Zack, ist ein Feuer da 😀

I had the same experience a couple weeks ago.I've built 1000s of fires no matter what I did it wouldn't burn. Talk about frustrating. Eventually got it too go. I enjoy your videos keep up the great work
You never know do you.. You hear the mantra birch bark burn when wet.. but I sometimes run into birchbark that dont catch fire even from a steady flame

So I'll just say awesome endeavor and of course fantastic film work. I can only imagine slogging through that terrain in those conditions, bravo brother. That fire woz raging by the end 😍😍🔥🔥🔥 it’s tough trying to make content all the time especially in winter. It’s time consuming and wen ya cold wet and just wanna get a fire going quickly and get some hot food inside ya, it can be really frustrating. Great video as always! I can empathize with your challenges regarding the fire. I once spent ten days above the timberline on a solo fly in caribou hunt. Rained non-stop until the day the plane was returning which is, of course, when the caribou came out - they won. I had a small solo goretex tent - glorified bivy bag really. It was pure misery but it is the trip I think about fondly the most. You are absolutely correct. Wool and canvas is the way to go. I appreciated the look on your face when the loop on the tarp broke. I wish I knew what you were thinking lol. I really thank you for doing different things every video. That way I can learn along with you. Best channel on UTube.

I'm a patient and die- hard fan. Where I live gets up to 115" of rain a year, mostly between Nov-Mar. And we don't have Birch trees. So, fire, however made, is a winner. I have as many natural cheats as I can carry. I watch you northern Euros to learn more "cheats". If you get a fire, it is a win!

Mora Garberg is the best forest knife for it's money , can't get more than that , if you wanna go fancier than go with Casström No. 10 but as you said you like it skinnier blade 😇😇😇
IMO the Garberg is the best knife Ive ever had. And Ive had evweything from Essee to fallkniven. The casström has great steel and handle. But blade is too thick to be comfortable in carving for me. Its perfect for heavy duty work and I know it would never fail and break. But for batoning knife it would need 1 inch more lenght in the blade to be perfect.

Well said about the equipment, I observe same preferences with me. Last time while I’ve been out with some friends to the Beskidy mountains (southern Poland) in -10 degrees, I spent most of the time in woolen sweater and merino base layer, while they had all these shells, polartec and other type of modern layers and they’ve been freezing their asses off. Ulvang sweater is my best friend in minus temperatures.

I totally agree with you about the Lavvu's warmth compared to a silnylon tarp such as those from DD Hammocks. When I was in Muddus National Park in late September last year and the temperature dropped down almost to zero celsius, I felt incredibly warm, even though I had a cheap summer sleeping bag...
