Miter Saw Station Build + Radial Arm Saw - Cabinets & Top & Fence

  • For a long time I have wanted to build a miter saw station and incorporate my radial arm saw into it so they share a long fence and bench top. I planned it a long time ago... replanned it... and tweaked it... and dreamed of building it. I came into a bunch of free plywood not too long ago and decided this would be the perfect way to use it. So I got the plans all ready, broke it up into phases since I have limited time to pull the project off, and started building phase one... the cabinets and bench top.
    In this video I go through the process I used and the plan I have. I show the basic construction design of the cabinets I am building and how I used the Jay Bates cabinet levelers with t-nuts and carriage bolts.

    Nice build. I got a great deal on discontinued Rockler steel shop stands and made my station out of them (adding plywood tops and sides, cabinet doors, etc.). It can do cuts to either side just over 10 foot.... the entire setup is almost 22 feet along the entire shop wall. I made the auxiliary fences removable, so I can use the sides as work benches when needed.
    The one thing you did that I wish I had... in place of a cabinet directly below the saw, leave it open for a trash can!

    • @DarinBeard
      @DarinBeard  5 років тому

      I appreciate that. I have done some VO professionally in my life but have not done an audiobook as of yet. I did not set up the radial arm saw to be able to rip cut. I have a table saw that I like and I just use the radial arm saw to cross cut boards too wide for the miter saw mostly. I would love to see what you do for yours when it's done.

      It is a Powr-Kraft sold by Montgomery Wards. This 10-inch model was built by the ToolKraft Corp. in Waterbury, CT for Wards. I have the same saw (got it from the original owner for free). It has a 20,000 RPM accessory shaft to drive router bits plus a second driveshaft the runs the same speed as the blade, 3450 RPM for sanding, buffing, grinding...You can see the two red output shaft plastic covers in the video on the right side of the motor around 4:45. These were build from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s and offer most of the operating levers at the front of the machine: blade elevation, miter swing, table locks. Very nice saw and solidly built.

    So you built the table then placed the radial arm saw on a level table..... well, the arm of your radial arm saw that holds the blade for cutting is not level to that table, your table should be level to the arm. think about it, with the table not level to the arm your blade travel is off (cross cut, uneven from front to back) and because not being able to adjust blade vertical to table, blade parallel to fence and blade parallel to table your cuts are not accurate and dangerous. Lots of burn marks on wood and kick-back when ripping. Level that table to the arm of the radial arm saw and calibrate the blade to the table. I see you only cross cut with the radial arm saw, is like having a girlfriend that will go all the way but, I only do cross cutting. With a blade not adjusted correctly it could become a bloody mess. be safe

    • @DarinBeard
      @DarinBeard  2 роки тому

      I don't even have the saw anymore but it was level with the table top. There weren't any issues with that. Thanks.

    • @faizullakhan1556
      @faizullakhan1556 Рік тому

      I am in the process of building this. I had to realign the radial arm saw because you are no longer using the table attached directly to the base. I built the cabinet and leveled it, then added the sides for the Radial, and checked the level again, added a shelf for the Radial and made sure it was level. When I set the Radial on the shelf securing it with lag bolts there was slight tipping, so I inserted a washer between the base and the plywood shelf and that leveled it out. Installed the top and leveled it out, then realigned the radial with the table top to ensure it is perpendicular (without fence). Checked the blade path back to front and had to make a slight adjustment to zero it out. Once I have the fence complete I will recheck the Radial and align the fence with the blade before securing it. Since the table is almost 8 feet across any slight leveling issue becomes a major issue at the ends. So you have to keep checking the alignment as you build it.
