    The otters are coming back to their home, while they might cause some trouble every now and then, we must understand that we are encroaching on their habitat to begin with and we messed up their home in the past. So now that they have returned, we should try our very best to respect them and live with them peacefully.

      It's also really beautiful to see wildlife like these living among us. People from other countries may have to travel for hours to see an otter.

    🇸🇬 Singapore is a more interesting place to live if we can co-exist with exotic animals & birds each in their respective habitat 90% of time !
    Balance is Key !
    Proactive measures must be taken should the population of any species get out of control to maintain order, peace & harmonious balance !

    The earth does not belong to the humans species alone. We sooner we understand that we are doing ourselves a favour when we learn to co-exist and share the world's resources with all living species, the better it is for the ecosystem to continue to thrive for creature and everything serves a purpose.

    I think for now, people just need to exercise mindfulness. Mindfulness that these are wild animals, that they have their own territories, their own diet, their own communities, mindful when they are moving around, giving them space, etc. I think anyone who is mindful of other people in general, will easily be mindful of these otters and respect them as a species .. the same way mindful people respect other fellow people of a different race or religion.
    Without mindfulness, it won't matter if its otters or people, the outcome will always be negative. If different species of animals can co-exist in the wild, and humans can't, then it's really xiasuay on the person. Of course, I'm confident that the authorities and the respective ministries will continue to monitor the situation for now. People just need to get their act together.

      This behaviour is logical though. Bears do that during salmon seasons too.
      When preys are easy to catch and in abundance, rather than spending 30 mins trying to eat all the hard to reach meat, predators like bears will just eat the most nutritious parts and move on to the next fish. Usually in the wild, none of the fish go to waste, scavengers will clear the rest of the carcass.
      The problem comes when they find the over populated koi ponds, eat the most nutritious parts, and leave the rest. People mistake that for killing for fun but it really has its logical reason.

    Otters detect toxicity in fish naturally. The incidence at Sentosa and condominiums where the otters tried to eat koi fish which were fed with dry foods with a chemical to enhance their colours of their scales is telling , they took a bite from a fish and found it inedible and went for another , and another. Soon they found that all koi fish in the pond are inedible , to the distress of the fish owner.
    This never happens at fishing ponds or at reservoirs , where otters devour every bit of fish they catch

    • @bigfishtan2591
      @bigfishtan2591 3 роки тому +4

      Not true, the otters are picky eaters and love to eat the fishes brain, if there are many fishes, they will just eat the brain and discard the rest of the fishes. Saw many the dead fishes in Bishan parks with only the head being bitten off and eaten by the otters.

    • @JustKeepThinking
      @JustKeepThinking  3 роки тому +4

      If you look at our reservoirs and canals, there are still an abundance of fish, if the population of the fishes are still so healthy, it just means that the otters are not close to killing too many fish.

  • @justinlee9789
    @justinlee9789 3 роки тому +6

    These otters may be cute. But an unfettered growth in their population can damage the ecosystem as they are apex predators in Singapore (we won't eat otters) and decimate the fish population. Being cute doesn't mean we should ignore their damage to other forms of wildlife.

    • @JustKeepThinking
      @JustKeepThinking  3 роки тому +7

      The beauty of ecosystem and food chain is that they self regulate. When there are less preys, predator numbers drop too.
      The real problem comes when people attempt to play god and intervene.

    • @veekwok5611
      @veekwok5611 3 роки тому +3

      There is some truth in what you said. Maybe the current number of otter family in Singapore is acceptable but too many otters will become a problem. Just like where the population of crows need to be culled and certain invasive species of fish are harmful to the environment.

      Ecosystem balances itself though, when there are too many predators, the number of preys drop, the predators starve, and their number drops.
      That creates room for preys to thrive again, starting the cycle until their number reach an equilibrium.
      With that, they help keep the fish population in check, other wildlife that fishes prey on can thrive and open up other niches that can only benefit biodiversity in Singapore.
