Love the content man been watching you for awhile now I would say Kareem probably is the best defensive player throughout the 70s but the beginning is probably wilt with the lakers
Great video, Jonny! The 70s is a decade that I want to learn more about, especially with NBA history during that decade. I recognize many of the names, like Abdul-Jabbar, Cowens, Debusschere, and Wilt, but haven't learned as much about some of them. So, it was great to learn more, particularly with players I haven't heard of or ones that I knew little about (i.e. Jones and Debusschere). I like how your videos for each year are concise, but also include a lot of good information. I'm not surprised to see Wilt on here :). I remember you mentioned before about how he was a great defensive player and how his unofficial blocks (like the ones recorded by Harvey Pollack, but were not included officially given that the league didn't record blocks) were numerous. He was amazing. Awesome video and list again. Have a wonderful week, Jonny!
That 71-72 Laker team with 69 wins and 33 in a row is much more impressive than any of the 70 win seasons in the 90s or 10s. Consider. Everyone flew comercial air and each team had 8 back to back to back games with at least one being on the road. The Lakers had four 3B series during the 33 game streak. I don't think that the Bulls, Spurs, Warriors would have been able to break 68/69 with that schedule.
Wilt Chamberlain was so.ething else. Imagine going from being the best scorer ever to the best passing big man to the best defender all in 1 career. Just crazy man. If you take out narratives and team accomplishments, he's the best player ever and it's not close.
How? 8 coaches in 13 years? And you didn't watch the games ..wilt often brought his team back or kept his teams competitive when his teammates were struggling@@veljkoradovic7162
Not sure I love it, but I'm definitely not opposed to it. A player eventually winning a "Triple Crown" of OPOY, DPOY and MVP in the same season would be sick.
@@jonnyarnett Add in the ROTY on top of that triple crown, and you're looking at someone that will either break in pieces soon, or who will dominate the league.
@@brendabackus5152 It's not quite that simple. Imagine the top scorer having 35 PPG and 0 assists, while another has 34 PPG and 15 assists, and that's just adding assists to the equation - offensive rebounds? Efficiency? FG%? DBPM? DWS? Team scoring differential on and off court? Let's just say there's a vast amount of factors to consider on offense, just as on defense. I mean, Larry Bird should be a pretty unanimous top-10 offensive player all-time, yet he has not a single scoring title to his name. And even if OPOY went only on scoring, are we talking PPG or total points scored? Because Trae Young scored more total points in 21/22 than Embiid, who had a higher PPG but spent more games "load managing".
Most of the voters would have no idea what they're voting on because they don't actually know about basketball history so unfortunately that wouldn't help a lot
In your opinion! Estimate; how many blocks did wilt average per game lifetime. Now, considering the stat keeper that tracked Wilt for 125 games wilt averaged 8 blocks per game.?
Based on Harvey Pollack's stat keeping, I think 8 is a safe guess. It's hard to guess his earlier years though, because although he was more athletic and could leap higher at that point, he wasn't completely focused on the defensive end to the extent that he was in Los Angeles. He was playing all 48 minutes in 1962 though, and with no 3 point shots and with goaltending called less often.... honestly, I could see that season being around 10 blocks a game, as crazy as it sounds. Just a guess though.
@@jonnyarnett Breaking breaking! According to JONNY ARNETT, Wilt didn't just average 50/25 in '62, he averaged a TRIPLE DOUBLE with points, rebounds and blocks!
@@c99kfmI don't understand why Wilt Chamberlain isn't considered the greatest player to ever play basketball. The man's on court accomplishments are unbelievable
I qould agree that Wilt and Russell would average 6 to 8 blocks per game routinely. Game pace allowed for a lot more FGA and both Wilt and Russell were among the fastest players and the best leapers. Wilt committed to defense after joining the Sixers. If you watch film, Wilt was pretty much uninterested in offense. If Mark Eaton could average close to 5 blocks a game, why is it crazy to think a really athletic player, like Wilt and Russ couldn't get more than that? I love you're giving a nod to DeBuscherre. A very forgotten great.
8.8 blocks per game is absolutely insane, even in his older post injured self, he was still athletic enough to block kareem's sky hook, something no other player througout kareem's long career has done. Not to metion wilt had games where he had 20+ blocks
Honestly i wouldn't mind seeing takes done for the 80s and 90s. We jave on record who won, but I curious to see who it would won that accolade if all biases were put aside. Thank you for the hard work and look forward to the next installment of this short series.
Idk if you’ve seen much of Cooper Flagg but he reminds me of Bobby Jones. He’s a special defender it’ll be tough to match 4 stocks per game at his peak but I can see him averaging a little over 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in a couple seasons. The main comparison for Coop is AK47 and he’s similar to him and Bobby but better offensive player than both.
I'd love to see a team of all time great defenders who weren't great scorers vs a team of great scorers who don't defend well. Glass cannons vs wall of bricks. Kinda hard to find a centre who can't defend but gets numbers but hey.
Would you be able to do a video finding every player who had the "DRose Flu?" I'm trying to remember every player who sat out against those Bulls teams
In this age of analytics, love it or hate it would it be crazy to look back and give out some of these awards to those we feel should’ve gotten it? Not just the DPOTY award but the sixth man too.
Unbelievable that not only was Artis Gilmore never Defensive Player of Year, he never even was named to all defensive team (maybe one time 2nd team selection?). No wonder it took him nearly 20 yrs to enter Springfield after a first ballot career.
It's kinda weird that ADVANCED metrics like def win shares and def rating can go all the way back to 1970 (and possible farther), but something as SIMPLE as blocks and DPOY doesn't because the NBA just didn't value them or take them into account 🤷♂️
“regardless of position” when it comes to DPOY is one of the very dumb claim, centres aren't favored out of nothing, centres if really good at blocking shots and body check people, they can literally change how the other team play, the other team will have to give up driving to the basketball all together, certain power forwards do the same, basketball offense really just boil down to three sections, near basket, mid range and 3 pointers, you cut off one of the three, that's literally a top defense in it's own. As long as there is a clear good defensive centre, it should not be a discussion if a guard should win.
Honestly the NBA in the seventies definitely had its scandals and DrUgS problems leading to the ratings and attendance to dip But the league itself was balanced with talent leading to no dynasty teams besides to the two time champions Celtics in this decade
The player that won the DPOY is the winner and aint no personal feelings about who should have won dont amount to a hill of beans. 👎for your hack job narratives on past eras to suit this era. Respect history.
