Thanks Fred for this incredible partiture from the genius of Goldsmith. One of his best late works. It's amazing. The best composer for sci-fi movies. I miss him a lot.
I remember very vividly seeing this in the theater and loving the opening music as the titles rolled. I thought at first sounded a bit like Poledouris then saw it was Jerry and realized it had some similarity to some of his Star Trek scores.
"Total Recall" (1990), directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone and Michael Ironside is a prime example of 80s / 90s sci-fi Action movies, with quirky characters, lots of chasing and… A fun house musical score! Composed by Jerry Goldsmith, Verhoeven's longtime collaborator and friend, the score manages to encapsulate the strange sceneries on screen with Goldsmith's tremendous gift to combine orchestral with synthetic sounds. Enjoy!
This "Intro" with opening credits made such a stunning impression on me that at the age of 16 I discovered quite a bit of orchestral music! Jerry - eternal memory of a genius!
Yes! Total Recall! One of my favorite movies with music by one of my favorite composers turned into a magnificent suite by my favorite soundtrack suite creator, Soundtrack Fred! Perfect way to start my day! 😊Thank you, Soundtrack Fred! 🥰
Hi, Fred!! This was Goldsmith's first meeting with Verhoeven. The composer liked his works in Holland, hated " Robocop "(1987) and, in this début partnership, would confirm that Verhoeven looked like a teenager with psychotic tendencies. Analyzing the material for " Total Recall ", Goldsmith ( who, according to himself, guided Arthur Morton's orchestrations based on " heart and soul " ) realized that this way everything he would not find in the script. So, he created one of his most brilliant opening themes, introducing a kind of mystical lyricism into the aggressiveness of the percussion and brass instruments, something that would only briefly return in final moments, such as the beginning and the end of " The Hollowgram " and " A New Life ", suggesting that the human element still exists. Verhoeven's insane frenzy over time is accompanied by the inexhaustible creativity for this genre that only Goldsmith has. Thanks again, Fred, and nice weekend!!!
Stay Safe, Dear Soundtrack Fred ✌🏻
Any time Goldsmith shows up in my feed I hit the like. I would hit thumbs up 50 times if I could. It helps that this one is so much fun to listen to - even out of context. I think I will use this as my new shave-before-I-go-to-work music. Thanks Fred!
Jerry Goldsmith, Alan Silvestri, Basil Poledouris, John Williams, James Horner, the greatest of the great... The Mutant track is one of the great music ever.
This was a great popcorn movie when I saw it in the theatre, and I believe I even purchased the score on cassette at the time! I don't know if there is reference for this, but I heard at the time that one of the synths/sequencers that Goldsmith used in the mix was an Ensoniq, which made me even more of a fan of that brand. (I did a lot of music work on my trusty Ensoniq!)
The opening track is a great example of how Hollywood movies used to use music to get you pumped for the beginning of the story. I think many Hollywood films now just launch into an action scene to try and hook you. Which isn't always successful, as you don't know the characters well enough to care what happens to them in a dangerous situation.
I wonder if Goldsmith ever talked to Basil Poledouris about how the main theme to "Total Recall" is an impressive tribute/homage/rip-off of the main theme to "Conan the Barbarian." ua-cam.com/video/NxKLCzjx4-k/v-deo.html
I was thinking this exactly! He even used this rhythmic synth sound Poledoris used in Robocop. I'd be inclined to think it was more an inspiration and homage than a rip-off but I don't know.
One of Goldsmiths best scores.
Definitely one of Jerry Goldsmiths best scores .....If not his best
Thanks Fred for this incredible partiture from the genius of Goldsmith. One of his best late works. It's amazing. The best composer for sci-fi movies. I miss him a lot.
One of the best science fiction soundtracks ever written, by the genres outstanding composer.
Another great theme from Jerry Goldsmith. He did the same thing for Star Trek.

I play the opening theme of this classic movie when I’m doing a gym workout!
