Tis the season for spooks, and The Haunting of Bly Manor is the perfect series to binge when you're stuck at home, eating trick-or-treating candy. Today joining us is James Kniest, Cinematographer for the Netflix show and many recent horror classics, to reveal how the show looks as incredible as it does. We also talk about what indie and beginner filmmakers can do on a limited budget to still make cinematic shots.

I was constantly pausing and talking about the lighting and hidden ghosts. What a great series!
Please do one on The Queen's Gambit! Its cinematography is stunning.
it's cool to bring us professionals who tell us about their experiences
Thank you so much to team Indy Mogul! your efforts are content are no less than a film school to me, it has always been like a film school for me alongside Film Riot since 2012!
The sound of the sharpie drawing on the cardboard is killing me haha, but I love this show so much! Keep it up Ted!
Haha you're not the only one (editor talking). Thanks for watching!!
The first time I heard someone mention adding pantyhose to the back of a lens was Shane hurlbut talking about his work on the film The Skulls.
Thanks for asking about the lens filtration! I had assumed it was netted... good to know I made a safe assumption!
Just found the page and immediately subbed. What an informative, entertaining, and educational look at how some of my favorite series, shows, and movies are lit and shot. Can’t wait to scroll through the catalog and see what else is available!!!
It takes so much of hard work in cinematography specially in the horror films. I think so.
Thank you guys for this great breakdown of a fantastic show. It has really good atmosphere and acting
A quick note on adding something to the back of your lens, you want to be very careful doing the especially with dslrs and mirror less cameras with an mechanical shutter. You probably should not take photos for sure but even filming you will still want to be careful.
No joke especially for electronica lenses. You can’t just slap something on the back of it however I have tried the pantyhose and it works pretty good
That's a good note, thanks for sharing that!
Finally! I was waiting for this♥️
Great setup! Now I will watch the series with a better perspective! Thx Guys
This was amazing to watch!

I needed this.
Split diopter shots were awsome
Best cinematography I have ever seen in a movie🎉🎉🎉
This will be one of the best breakdown by indy mogul 🎉🎉
I'm in my last year of film school and I just finished shooting a music video. We were supposed to use a Sony F5 but one of the second year students dropped one of them so they were short on those. My group ended up using the Arri Alexa which gave us headaches because the gear house gave us 15v batteries which we ended up having to charge every 30 minutes. Ended up not getting everything. We did get a pickup on Monday though and I made sure to book out the external 24v batteries which is a good thing cos we ended up basically having to reshoot the whole video due to the original being too dark.
The Arri Alexa weighs 50kg on its own. The og shoot took place 4 weeks ago and my neck is still stiff. I swore up and down I would never work with the Alexa ever again, but after the reshoot I realised our problems were due to the batteries and not the actual camera.
love this
Such a Good Show
Can u do a breakdown of The Queen's Gambit? And this was really cool.
Wonderful idea!
@@indymogul YES
Wow thank you 🙏
Do Ratched next
I miss BFX. I don't ever remember when Gary spun the wheel the price was thousands of dollars in equipment.
NOICE!
I'm so here for this 😈
8:11 I hate having ghosts in my......addict...??
show had so much potential but ending felt rushed. They started off with such an amazing storyline then splat. Make it a 12 episode series netflix
I want to use netting over my camera for a long time. I think my next feature film.
Give it a shot! Perhaps get a few test shots beforehand to see if it's a look you like for your project!
please have roger deakins on this series
Trust me, we're trying to reach him haha
😍😍😍
You should've asked him why the opening shot of The Bye Bye Man was so overexposed.
When listing movies that someone has worked on, it is always better not to mention the bye bye man
First!
I wasted enough time watching the series, so another 17:40 isn't going to be devoted to it. I'm just going to say, I _hated_ the cinematography. The contrast was terrible, strong light sources whited out scenes, leaving faces featureless, and dark. It was all in soft focus, and the depth of field was really shallow, meaning nearly everthing was out of focus. It was annoying, style over substance stuff, and eye strain inducing. It was like watching a worn out VHS tape, instead of a 4K TV with HDR. If the style had just been used in the Manor to make it look ghostly, maybe I'd have given it a pass, maybe, but it persisted when the story pointlessly moved to the USA. Oh, and one final gripe, the opening premise, that guests at a wedding sitting by a fire are told a ghost story,.... which then takes nine fifty-minute episodes to cover, then we return to the wedding guests at the end,.. who we are supposed to accept, listen to story teller drone on for SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS. Utter BS.
With her narration, the story was probably closer to two hours. I highly doubt she was also doing the dialogues and little actions that could be summarized in a narration.
@@alexman378 it took seven and a half hours to tell the story. If the wedding guests got an abridged version that conveyed all the salient points, consisting of only the narrated parts, that's what we should have seen too. It was a ludicrous vehicle to sell the story. Even at just two hours, nobody is going to sit through that at a wedding. Hell, the Moonflower monologue was tediously long by itself!
@@engineeredlifeform Again, when you tell a story, you summarize, unless there’s key pieces of dialogue that people would need to know. When you show it in a film, you need to get through the details. And I will agree on the monologue bit, that must’ve been 5 pages of just dialogue, and they did the same in Hill House.
Hated the cinematography in this
