Definately needs to go into a stock S1 RX-8. No upgrades besides the hybrid 13b renesis. Then compare it with an original S1 RX8. This would show what the RX8 should have been like.
Yeah it has to be rx8.
Something to get you to 300 rwhp reliably is what every rx8 owner wants (im one of them).
Whether that be na (unlikely but great if yields +220 rwhp) or low boost on stock ecu.
Making manifolds and selling as kits with ecu flashes will make plenty of $$$ for kmr or mazdatrix.
No need to find a 13b rew and make the rx8 front cover fit.
Can use standard OMP

And standard ecu for most of it.
My support is for the RX-8, lots of potential for knowledge to be gained there.
I'd especially like to see the stock ECM and the factory intake system used with it.
i have a 2004 6mt. id love pp exhaust housings with stock intake and bit of inlet porting. id only do it if it worked on factory ecu.
Just tune the stock ecu.

I agree it would be cool to see power difference between a mild mod stock rennie.
Do a series where you evaluate it in an Rx-8 NA with stock ECU. What needs to be done to the calibration file to run good, what are the results in terms of output? Then, standalone ecu (difference in output? how much?). Once the basic evaluations are done, reiterate the process in turbo form... I think this would be the ultimate hybrid renni video series everybody wants!

Don't even bother with the stock ECU. Why shoot it in the foot? Who is doing a full motor build and not at least dropping a Haltech PnP in there?
Explain how an oem ecu isn't up to the task...

Gotta say I'd love to see it in an RX-8. You have been promoting this type of build for years and many of us are looking for guidance on how to do it. If you throw it in anything else but an RX-8 it doesn't do the justice many of us are looking for.
You can always throw it in one of the other vehicles down the road, but to see a full mock up in an RX-8, running and brainstorming with the community would help us all more than just seeing something "cool."

I really wanna see one in an rx8 with a stock ecu on something like versatune. Something practical that every day guys would have. Im building a drift rx8 and this option is so tempting to alleviate some of the typical renesis issues.
Id love to see it in 90’s Miata. They handle very similar to a FB 1st gen Rx7 but is a Vert. They’re REALLY easy to come by too.
BUT, I think it would benefit a ton of people by putting it back into a RX8. You can test the air fuel ratios on the stock intake and ECU as a lot of people who are interested in this build are RX8 owners.

Fit this back into an RX8. Cover off the small changes needed to make it fit and run, how it runs on the stock ECU, do some dyno tests, etc.
This would really help bring in some additional interest for the RX8.
It’ll also put to rest the argument that the hybrid configuration doesn’t work.

I'm building one for my rx8 and would love to see you manage a wideband and boost with the stock ecu. Maybe a reflash and some kind of affordable piggyback situation. These are "budget" builds after all ;)
RX8! This way you to show how this would be a great drop in upgrade for the RX8 community. Then package a swap kit.

Please run this NA before boosting it! Run it on the stock computer first as well! This build has been a saga and I can't wait to see this build in the dyno!
I would like to see it in an rx8 chassis just because there not allot of well documented info on this engine but i think its a pretty practical build.
S1 RX8s are the next great rotary value and should be the next platform to support for years to come. They are starting to be very plentiful and in much nicer shape than an FC for the same price.

The RX8 is an excellent chassis if you want to go fast around a track. Cheap too.
It's really unfortunate that the auxiliary port servo motor and control linkage is placed right where the peripheral intake ports would need to go. Otherwise the hybrid motor could be turned into an 8 port and use turbo waste gate valves to control airflow to the peripheral ports and maintain air charge velocity for better low end torque.

Go RX8. The first FC is nearly 40 years old. The RX8 is going to be the next inexpensive platform for future club/vintage racers who want to be in a rotary car.

Been following your videos closely. How does the GSLSE housings affect exhaust port timing in a hybrid renesis build? How much overlap is there and should scavenging be utilized if there is overlap? Interested in port timing and boost using 10:1 rotors.
One thing I realized is that with the peripheral exhaust ports there is now port overlap, so it might actually drop the dynamic compression down to a more boost appropriate level.
Someone's been reading forum posts by that angry old man who HATES the idea of hybrids lol. I'm interested in this too. I'm glad that someone as experienced as Kyle is doing this because every other one I've seen is either kind of sketchy or just never gets running.

There’s a lot of rx8 owners which are looking for a reliable, powerful solution using the renesis in their RX8 chassis… could be an entertaining build series.
Everyone is going to want it in an RX8 for a drop in upgrade. Realistically though, it's going to cost far too much for 99% of people that want it in an RX8 since this is really a race engine like you said. It would be cool though if there was another cheaper/simpler option instead of either REW swap or 3 rotor which are both extremely involved and expensive by themselves. So if it's cheaper and less involved than both those options, then it could actually be something really cool to have done in mass.

I fail to see how this is too costly for 99% of rx-8 folks. A proper bulletproofing build of a renesis is not cheap in any case.. the extra couple/few thou is part of the bulletproofing. Dowels/new-gslse housings, custom exhaust... the question i have is what can be done with the stock ecu..? How much headroom, if any, does it have?
The hybrid in NA format is a great candidate for a [legit] e-supercharger.
I was down the line planning to put this hybrid motor in the chassis of a Datsun Roadster. I know plenty of people have swapped SR's but I think a small turbo rotary or Naturally aspirated one would be perfect for the lightweight chassis. Its also pre 75 for us Cali folk.

I’d say to put it in an rx8 but I am very close to finishing my boosted half bridge hybrid in my rx8 and would like to document the process once I have “perfected it”

Some of us remember when that MotoIQ article went live, and are eagerly waiting to see what the N/A version turns out to be... because we have all the parts to build one for their AE86 *cough cough*. Screw the haters, Kyle, take your time.
Put it in an MR2 spyder (the lightweight one from the 2000s) in a transverse orientation with an H-pattern dogbox transmission and a de-dion axle conversion using a Satchell Link to attach it, and a custom camber link with hub pivot added to give it a controlled/improved camber curve.

It would be really cool to see if these hybrid motors could run on the OEM ecu. I don’t see why it wouldn’t with a tune. I’d also like to see pictures of that header that you mentioned. The FD is really tempting though

impressive indeed, lets see NA and turbo exhaust configurations for this build, first would be good to see the dyno graph to at least know what power gains we get from such build.
this idea of swapping irons/housings would be cool to see on a Single rotor, cheaper to do and as an experiment of sorts with rx7+rx8 parts, imagine how far it can be pushed with peripheral ports too
Dropping it into an RX-8 is the obvious choice as it's probably the most useful research and development wise, but man something like a t-bucket with a rotary is very very intriguing lol
the gslse hybrid is a perfect engine build if you own an rx8 and putting another engine in the rx8 and you got leftover engine from the rx8
I would like to see it put in a street rx8 na to see what it will make NA and to see how reliable it can be. After some abuse I would like to see it boosted in the fd. I own a Fd and my brother in law ownes a rx8. Please do it so I can check it out. It was actually one of the reasons why I subscribed.

What intake are you using. Is it a stock 6 port? If so, being it having better exhaust flow, would you open the intake ports at a lower rpm and keep them closed lower for better idle and or is it more of a preference of how you want the HP and torque curve?

You can find a Good 2wd ranger for cheap. The drive train is nearly identical if you use rx7 trans. You’d have to swap out the master cylinder. Also I think a Mazda pickup would be most fitting.
Oh and you have to consider rear end gearing

Can you make a video about 13B engines with a single scroll turbo vs twin scroll turbo. The FD is legendary for the exhaust charge which is perfect for a twin scroll Turbo but this 5/6 port hybrid engine would require a single scroll Turbo. What turbo have you used on the hybrid 13B?
Is it a street or Bridgeport? Also would the hybrid even need a Bridgeport to brap?
wont brap without a bridge, same as a 6 port RX7. ......

Do you think it's worth blocking the center plate exhaust port and doing a t4 twin scroll manifold?
I'm just not sure if it could cause a carbon deposit problem in the blocked ports.
I'm just slowly mapping out my plan for a hybrid rene once I outgrow my current 320hp drift setup.
Also Kyle, do you have any tips or resources that might help me relocate the entire box of ecus and computer in an rx8?
Mine seems to be overheating after multiple drift runs and the canbus network dies, followed by power steering if I keep pushing it.

Could there be the “power valves” which has been used on those 2 stroke engines? Both intake and the exhaust?
Then we would have a more reliable rotary engine than ever!
There could be a lot of variable thing which can be used on it!(variable intake and exhaust) which can make this machine having better low rev torque and better engine traction speed with high revs!

I love what you're doing. It's so sad that they lost some of the gorgeous curves from the RX7 into the RX-hate. But ... if you can throw a turbo on this? Or make a 20b ... perhaps you can create a good powerplant independent of the chassis' beauty. And at least the RX8 is RWD. They want over 45$ for a stupid 2.0L GTI or STI. It's just outrageous. I have to believe others also anticipated 90s sports cars getting more accessible with age ... not less. Yet ... here we are; in a market where freaking MIATAS sell for double what they should. And it's actually cheaper to buy a 3.5L AWD Mercedes than a Japanese "hot hatch." Just bizarre times. Prices that get right on the edge of a decent Porsche Cayman (if only I weren't 6-3. 😞)

What should you put it in? There's only 3 different vehicles that a rotary should be swapped into (obviously if they didn't come with one)...
1: An MX-5/Miata
2: A DMC-12
3: A B2200
That's it. The Miata should've came with a 13B, the DMC-12 waa supposed to come with a rotary, and the B2200 should've been available with a 13B to make a new "REPU". Period.
Edit: unless you can find either a Mazda-Go rickshaw (or another rickshaw or Tuk Tuk), or, a first Gen Mazda Carol.... you can make a "hot rod" out of that 😅👌
