Geoffrey Palmer had joked that despite all the other work he's done in film and television, including 9 series of 'As Time Goes By' with Judy Dench, the only thing people wanted to hear from him was, 'I'm a doctor and I want my sausages'.
It's all in the delivery. Who can forget the deadpan perfection of the exchange:
"What's the name of your book?"
"'My Life in Kenya'."
"What's it about?"
"My life in Kenya."
When it came to his sausages there was a bit of a cock up on the catering front lol. To those who don't know that was his catchphrase in Reggie Perrin.
That's a shame. Aside from having a brief role in Doctor Who's "The Silurians," he had a hilarious role as Cousin Jimmy in "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin." The man is brilliantly funny when he needs to be.
He was also in the _Blackadder Goes Forth_ episode "Goodbyeee".
Palmer was also very funny in his small part in the movie Clockwise. He was so cheery and accommodating in it. It's great to see him in this episode of Fawlty Towers. However, I will always love his character and performance as Lionel Hardcastle; the curmudgeon with a heart of gold.
Polly: "oh Mr Leeman, we thought you said the linnen"
Basil: "BRILLIANT!"
He had the idea for this episode by asking someone what their biggest problem at their hotel was, and they replied "Oh.. getting rid of the stiffs".
Geoffrey Palmer, the doctor in this, came in to where I work. I asked him, “do you want some tea? Coffee? A sausage?” He didn’t laugh.
"Two down, twenty-five to go".
Fawlty Towers, the gift that just keeps giving and giving.
The man who dies is played by Derek Royle, who also played Jolly Jimmy, the tour 'host' in the Beatles' film _Magical Mystery Tour,_ where his performance wasn't as stiff.
I only just got the joke that when she calls the dog a lapdog, the major thinks that means its from lapland, which is why he mentions reindeer.
The monty python team stayed in a hotel down south somewhere in the early 70s. The idea for Fawlty Towers came from that hotel stay and the god awful manager/owner and his wife. Within a couple of years Cleese and Booth were pitching the idea to tv companies. The first series aired in 1975 to mixed reviews but gained a following as it was aired again and again. It took another four years for the second series to be commisioned. Cleese and Booth were divorced between production of the first and second series but they revived their writing partnership for series two. Happy almost xmas!
This was dead funny. RIP Geoffrey Palmer, d.2020. I have fond memories of 'Butterflies', late 70s I think with Wendy Craig. Fave line : 'What's he doing in the basket?' 'Well, not much...' Polly has some great scenes in the last two, and so does Manuel.
Dawn is such a sweetheart,I'm so enjoying watching her react to this series of Faulty Towers and her laughter is contagious to say the least.I also remember "Butterflies",another great TV series, these type of comedy programs aren't done much any more.
Geoffrey Palmer was one of few actors who appeared in both classic and new Doctor Who, and he also starred in two John Cleese movies: Clockwise and A Fish Called Wanda.
If you look up "farce" in the dictionary, it's got a picture of this entire episode. The situation, pacing characters, everything clicks along perfectly.
The strike references are because this was 'The Winter of Discontent' when many were suffering under a cost of living crisis - sound familiar - and were demanding huge pay rises and going on strike when they were turned down. A 'scab' is someone who breaks a strike and continues to work weakening the strike action. The last two episodes were actually affected by strikes at the BBC itself. The next episode wasn't shown a week after this one as scheduled as it had to be delayed because of strike action and the last one couldn't be completed so there was a delay in broadcasting it at all. Episode 5/6 was shown on 28/03/79 but the final one wasn't aired until 25/10/79 !
soon to be known as the First Winter of Discontent
I love starting my day with a laugh, and your laughter takes me with you... thank you for this... we need more laughter in our lives. The more comedies you react to, the more I'll be watching 👀👀👀
"I'm a doctor and I want my sausages!"
Such a wonderful line to have come up with! 😂
Geoffrey Palmer who plays Dr Price was also in the sitcoms Butterflies and also As Time Goes By with Judi Dench in the 90s. I highly recommend the latter actually, it's so underrated.
He also had a recurring role in The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin. Another really funny sitcom starring Leonard Rossiter.
Only 12 episodes makes this the perfect series, leaves you wanting more
Indeed. How could it ever be done?! I've never seen it's equal on the hundreds of sitcoms presented since. Re-runs of Lucy come as close.
@@wessew6185 I was just going to write about "I love Lucy" !!! :-)
Connie Booth also appeared with John Cleese in The Strange Case Of The End of Civilisation As We Know It - they seemed to maintain a working professional relationship throught the '70s.
Oh, that was hilarious. The funniest bit was one that Cleese wasn't even in: the "He'll stop at nothing" scene.
Which was filmed in 1976-7 between the first two series of Fawlty Towers. They never worked together again afterwards.
In case you didn't understand. Lapp is another word for Sami which is a people in northern Scandinavia who herd reindeer.
The dog breed is referred to as Laplanders.
In THE NAKED GUN, at comatose O.J.'s bedside, speaking of ways of dying, Leslie Nielson quips: "a parachute not opening, having your nuts bit off by a Laplander - that's the way I want to go".
My grandfather ran a motel in Brisbane in the early 1970's and he loved this show.
I've always thought this should be the final episode. Don't get me wrong, the actual final episode is great. But I like to think that when Basil flees in the laundry basket, he never comes back and lives the rest of his life somewhere far away with a new identity. Of course being episode 4, we know he will be back for 2 more episodes.
Polly tossing the cover over the lady guest @11:54 is so damn funny 🤣
1:45 When the woman says it's a "lap dog", the Major confuses that with "Lapp" of northern Scandinavia, where reindeer could be hunted.
This one is my favorite just for the non-stop chaos.
They actually wrote this mid-divorce, and they each described it as some of the best times they had together.
I wonder if this is the case for a lot of creator collaborators who get married. They have such a great time creating together that they get married, only to discover that they are otherwise incompatible in everyday life
Yep - they even got some of their inspiration for the second series during a holiday in Monaco, which they took together _after_ they got divorced (staying in separate hotel rooms).
"I'm a Doctor! I'm a Doctor and I Want My Sausages!"
At 4:20 "He's gettin worse, he's gettin worse." Welcome to Fawlty Towers, I hope you enjoy your stay.
I'm one of those people that likes the video before watching it because I know I'll like it. Thanks Dawn 👍🏼
A great episode from a great sitcom. That must have been some acting gig for Derek Royle who played the unfortunate Mr. Leeman. In his pyjamas and expressionless as he's lifted up, dragged about and deposited in various places.
The two seasons of Fawlty Towers aired in 1975 and 1979. John Cleese and Connie Booth were married from 1968-78, so they were divorced by the time these episodes aired, and probably by the time filming took place. There was a similar situation in the show Sherlock. Martin Freeman, who played Dr. Watson was married to Amanda Abington, the actress who played the woman that Watson married in the show, but the two actors divorced before the final season of Sherlock aired.
The phone was also the social media of the probably late 1800s to 1980s, before there was an internet. You see teens on the phone in a lot of movies, like the older daughter in Poltergeist.
little tidbit about Polly, she was the original Lumberjack’s Girlfriend (While Carol Cleveland did the stage version with Eric Idle in place of Micheal Palin) and Polly was also the witch in “Monty Python’s The Holy Grail” (she weighed as much as a duck, so she was made of wood, so she was a witch)
It's amazing that we all love Basil and he's such a Jurk. Maybe because he's so good at it. Merry almost Christmas.
The Major gets to deliver some cracking lines, beautifully played constant in the show. I worked in hotels in the 1980's where you would have long stay guests, many were in the medical profession and quite posh
That's Geoffrey Palmer as Dr. Price! We were very excited to see him because he was the male lead in another BBC sitcom import that we loved to watch: "As Time Goes By", co-starring Judi Dench.
Not at the time he wasnt. He didn't appear in As Time Goes By for another 13 years. He was more known for the sitcom Butterflies.
@@scottandrewbrass Most true: but in our family, we watched "As Time Goes By" (and "Keeping Up Appearances") long before we caught "Fawlty Towers", so our excitement over Palmer was backwards.
It was very weird when I'd just seen a rerun of "As Time Goes By", and then I saw a James Bond movie where Judi Dench as M interacted with Geoffrey Palmer as an Admiral. 🤣
Dawn's love for Manuel is wonderful.
Perhaps my favorite episode.
2:17. Sybil is gossiping on the phone, but she happens to be talking about the couple that comes in and stands in front of her.... the elderly man and the tall young redhead. She's actually saying "redhead" when she notices them and quickly changes the conversation.
Your Fawlty Towers reactions are you just mainly giggling, love it!
Thanks for this DM. So appreciate 😊
Hey, that's Geoffrey Palmer ordering the sausage!
The cast was amazing.
have a great week Queen Dawn Marie🤍 !!! keep laughing and having fun!! hugs lysm 🥰🥰!!!
Basil is so quick to judge people for being rude to him! Isn’t that just the way? He’s such a Karen.
Thank you for such joy of sharing your enjoyment of these shows and movies.
I can't believe you cut out the poke in the eye 😂
A great British comedy with an abundance of episodes that I have watched through twice is [Last of the Summer Wine].
John cleese and connie booth both wrote these (i have the book of the scripts). I dont think their relationship changed anything. John cleese has admitted to being an uptight perfectionist at this time and he wanted to produce something perfect.
Great reaction - to this and the other FT's. Love the way you enjoy it, laugh out loud and really 'get it', unlike some others I've seen. Keep up the good work! 😁😁
"MURDER! MURDER!" 😂😂
Pythons used to think Cleese the the neurotic nut of the group and often told him so, jokingly...that's quite a feat among the Pythons. After Polly, he ended up marrying an American psychologist... best thing he ever did according to JC himself.
Brilliant! Merry Christmas Dawn Marie.
Thi episode was so out of my mine, but I loved this crazy chaos. Thank you so much and Merry almost Christmas.
Part the reason for so few episodes was the strain on Cleese’s voice … around the last episode of each season his voice began to crack.
It's rather creepy how it cuts to him lying dead with his eyes open
My fave episode!
You should read up on the background of the series. John Cleese based Basil Fawlty on a real life encounter with a hotel propriotor. It's a story well worth a read. :-)
I think you see less of Polly when they all need to look as incompetent as possible. When you need someone to hold it all together you see more of her!
Dawn reacting to Fawlty Tower, I of course click up only having seen and heard one minute. (And lo and behold, I was upclicker #666, scary, huh?)
You should order the Minestry of Silly Walks Clock.
Very nice sweater. Thumbs up! 👍
the first line of the video would never be taken out of context. #sarcasm
Love me some kippers! A kipper omelet with gouda cheese.
You should watch "butterflies" comedy series. It had one of the actor guests here as main husband.
From what I understand, they were divorced before they finished filming season 2.
How many times does Miss Tibbs have to see the body before she stops screaming?
Dawn Marie, I love your reactions, and you, ... are, ... ADORABLE!! 😉 ❤️
John Cleese is brilliant!
Relentless mayhem
That into was the filthiest laugh I ever hears 🤣
John Cleese had a friend that worked in a posh London hotel and when asked what was the toughest thing in his hotel work he said: "Getting rid of the stiffs." I believe John and Connie were divorced by this time. Definitely separated. There's a few years between seasons. The next one is probably my least favourite of them all.
I have a pretty dark sense of humor so of course this is my favorite episode.
This one is pure chaos Basil just makes thing worse definitely if I was Manuel I'd quit and go back to Spain or another job at a proper hotel.
Don’t have a favorite or even least favorite episode, but that whole thing with shutting an old lady in a closet is definitely a standout scene.
has our wonderful host checked out Father Ted? ... Father Ted has a similar feel of the crew inexorably descending into surreal complications.
1:57 dirty minds
I have seen the man who was the doctor on another British sitcom. Can't recall the name
I did exactly was you instructed and clicked th Like button. Now I have a rash. You could have warned us.

great reaction series 👍
Good to see you enjoying Fawlty Towers ... post Monty Python TV series wise you might want to try Ripping Yarns an anthology series of bizarre stories created by Michael Palin and Terry Jones ... mostly staring Michael Palin.
I love your laugh.
Dawn Marie: What is it? Me: She said it, a Shih Tzu, it's an actual breed 🙂 (hehe, shitzu 🤣😜)
Come on guys let's get dawn up there start hitting the sub button 👍 and I'm not her friend, her reaction s are good, and happy Christmas 🌲☃️ to all 🥰
Your voice and your laugh are soooooooo cute! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I think the previous episode or the one before had a lot of different characters, thus they take up air-time if you give them all screen-time, so that means characters like Manuel and Polly would have less screen-time if any at all. Like those movies with lots of superheroes, everyone has to have some face-time, thus you have less time to develop a few characters.
Dawn Marie
Yer the salt of the Earth
I enjoy your reactions so much….
As an American I have never had kipper for breakfast... But I have always wanted to try them but can never find them available. What are they like? Are they fishy, sweet or something else. btw I love fish... Just saying.
ua-cam.com/video/utUhu2pUhP4/v-deo.html
Here is the real basil 🤣💜
Although a different style of comedy, "The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin " is about another man, who is miserable. Whereas Basil Fawlty went from disaster to disaster, Reggie has a nervous breakdown and tries to break free from his middle class, monotonous life.
Curious, what kind of sausages do you get when you order "sausages" ? ;)
Do you prefer a kipper or a sausage?
👍
🤣 💙
🙉 "I'll watch it, but I WON'T like it!" 😁
U have to watch are you being served and the follow up spinoff grace and favor
since you like fawlty towers. you might like THE BRITISH EMPIRE its about a manager of a sports club i prefered it. also the young ones is classic comedy.
Idea for future series reaction I'm Alan Partridge, only 2 seasons 6 episodes each nice easy watch
9:21 - The old lady sees the corpse, shrieks and falls down. When Basil enters the office the right arm of the corpse is still swaying from the old lady falling next to it. Nice detail, and an awesome feat for a corpse that's been stiff for hours.
_Sausages_
Seeing these makes me realize that so many of the guests are as annoying as Basil. I can't feel bad for them; they deserve him.
0:37 Gah ! Do you read the comments ? It's been said several times that they separated in the period between the two series. Connie and John divorced in September 1978 but had been separated for two years prior so they weren't a romantic item whilst series 2 was being written and filmed. They are still cordial when their paths cross but never worked together again professionally.
8:44 that's sexist!
Why?
@@carlhartwell7978 she's assuming a corpse of being a pervert just because it's a man despite the fact he's dead
@@JohntheLNERP2 Fair enough, I take your point, but can you see any other 'sexism' in the series?
@@carlhartwell7978 nope
@@JohntheLNERP2 Would you not consider the moment Fawlty tries to turn a light on and clutches a _relatively attractive_ young womans tit, as even _slightly_ sexist? Ie; objectifying....
All I'm really trying to do is say, let's just laugh and not bring 'PC' crap into any of this...does none of us any good. Don't play by 'their rules'...It's okay to be 'sexist', we have different sexes for a reason. Fuck 'them', push back. Men are men, women are women.
Of course it's ludicrous that not only a corpse, let alone 'any man' would rape...but there is 'some' truth in the ladie's perception...she _wouldn't_ be raped by ANY woman...she _might_ be raped by any man! Ie; only men rape...really.
Don't be a snowflake though man. Man up! lol.
