I've had a very good friend since junior high, and I'm now 70. I have watched his mother's house change over the decades. In the 1970s she fell in love with the concept of an accent wall. She was so much in love with the idea that she often would make very wall in a room into an accent wall. She'd also layer the accents. In a den she heavily textures the walls. Then she antiqued the heavily textured walls. Then she put lattice work over the antiqued heavily textured walls. Once the realized that she could tuck artificial flowers into the lattice work, there was no stopping her. That room was like a screaming argument among all the students in an English as Second Language class.
Lastly, she ripped it all out when she realized she had accidentally created a cleaning nightmare and a haven for spiders. It's not her fault. Lots of that went on in the 70s.
I work at a shop that restores, enlarges, prints photos and art prints (and frames them - some are 40x60") and we have more business than we can handle. Yes, these services are still around in 2024 and in great demand. 😊
Is it possible to enlarge a small postcard or poster or will it lose its effect because of loss of pixels/definition? I have some beautiful images but I live in apartment with very high walls so need larger framed pieces & was told the images could not be enlarged. 😢
As someone who did sponge paint in the 80s, I warn you off lime washing. That texture is not covered by the next coat of paint. You'll have to sand the entire wall smooth when you, inevitably, get tired of the look. I'm your cautionary tale.
I am truly not interested in the appearance of lime washed walls. The aesthetic agitates my gaze and, in my view, clashes with most elegant decor looks.
I hear you! As an artist, I did some faux finishes and sponge / rag rolling on walls in that era for people. I am sure there was a lot of sanding/ paint stripping that happened in the 2000's.
Is lime wash supposed to mimic stone? Apparently it's an ancient method. It does remind me exactly of sponge painting but with neutrals instead of bright colors. I think it's beautiful but it's definitely a new trend so I'd hold off unless painting is no big deal to you. Paint is one of the easiest ways to update a space
Speaking of walls, one of the first videos I watched of Nick's was talking about the idea of using dark color behind the TV to camouflage it. I had just moved to a new house and had really no option but to put the TV above the fireplace 😱 However, I painted a large section of the wall a deep maroon and hung the TV. I have had many people comment that they didn't think we had a TV in the room until I turned it on. It's so easy to miss with the dark wall, thanks Nick!
If Nick ever needs more engagement in his videos, all he has to do it play with the clock. Put batteries in it. Cover the clock's hands in a colored vinyl. Slowly change it's position so it's closer to the wall every video. Add a new clock. Who knows. All I'm saying is that he got the algorithm figured out 🤙
When I was in college the dorm I lived in had a painting of the donor the dorm was named after, and throughout the year people would use tape and shapes cut out of colored paper to dress her up for the seasons. She was definitely dressed up like a leprechaun for a while. Maybe Nick could do that with the clock too?
@@colinneagle4495that's so nice. I never wanted a statue but the idea of young people celebrating and dressing up my statue is very fun. Including if it's occasionally disrespectful 😂 I better go achieve something
Frame a beautiful piece of fabric, scarf, paper, etc for a really one-of-a-kind piece. Even a beautiful vintage beaded handbag would be fantastic framed.
I do that. Lately, a guest gushed about the covered canvas over my fireplace. It's made from an embroidered tablecloth I got on Amazon. In my guest room, I have a canvas covered with a silk scarf that belonged to my mother that she got in Japan in the 1950s.
Pizza Pan Clock is back! I have artwork my Dad painted back in the 60-70's. I have chosen new pieces through the years also. My conundrum is bathroom decor - no words please telling me how to live. I got this far, so don't need advice from my walls.
I always go for small oil paintings of. nature in the bathroom. I don't like art covered by glass in my bathroom because glass glares, and can't be seen from every angle. I have a vintage 70's one I picked up at a resale shop for $30. I love it! They are actually pretty durable, too, so go for it! Just hang it where it won't be hit by water or hairspray.
@@nancyrukavena6992 I have some small oil paintings my father (who was an artist did), but there is no way I would put them in a steamy bathroom. I was thinking of a canvas print of artwork or photography from a local artist I like, so while they do cost a bit do not have the same monetary value. Just can't make up my mind. Still a conundrum - but working on it. 😊
I have medical book illustrations in my bathroom. I still get compliments from people who realize that the art across the wall from the toilet is a diagram of the digestive system. I’ve always loved anatomical drawings and I use them as references for my art, so I have them throughout my house here and there. I also use the storage of towels and washcloths as decor, and metal baskets and mirrors. I think about when people are standing in the room, washing their hands for example, I think about what’s in their eye line and I put images there that are more detailed and benefit from being looked at up close, as opposed to putting those same pieces over the top of furniture where people aren’t able to get a better look at it
When I bought my first flat I took GREAT delight in hanging all the mirrors and picture shelves at my eye level (5'1"). Guests who have to duck a bit just have to deal. It's my place that I bought with my money ♥️ Each time I hang something new it feels like a tiny celebration
There are two bedrooms in my house. The back one has obviously always been a kids' room. All the door handles are ridiculously low, and the nearby bathroom is similar - very low toilet, very low vanity and sink. I made it my room and haven't changed a thing with regards to the heights. 😁
@@jlaurelc My house is probably the same as yours. The back room is not much larger than a prison cell so I made it cozy cottage. It's my room and I love it!
"Other people's dead relatives", haha. Nick, your dry wit is the best! Beyond the practical tips, I love how you weave in design history, theory, etc.! Such a brilliant channel and I share you with all all my friends. Nick, you would be one of my favourite, most interesting people to invite to a dinner party (as long as I didnt have to cook). Mwa! ❤ 🌺
I learnt so much about art and gallery walls by photoshopping my photos. I’d mock up gallery arrangements on the computer and saw what worked and didn’t work, how dark or light the photos had to be to work together, how much neg space in each photo was required, if splitting a photo in to 3 needs some cropped off each side to allow for the mat, frame and space between the photos when on the wall, the angles of buildings and whether they go together, etc. Cropping photos makes such a difference. I made up rules for me to follow to make a gallery classy. This made me a better artist. I took three ordinary pics of wet calla lilies, severely cropped them, made one light, one med and one in dark tones and boy did that look sensational. Never would have thought of that. I’ve gone through old 80s photos of a family Euro trip, taken out the tech, cars, people, etc. and made them timeless. I upped the light tones, minimalised the med tones and lessened a lot of the black. They look so good. I’ve also done portrait and landscape options, watercolour, sepia and B&W options. This is so much fun! I choose mainly cheap black frames with custom white mats and for the large pieces, custom black mat and frame.
Love a good gallery wall, but now I’m old and they are too much to keep dusted, clean and everything straight. So strange how priorities change over a lifetime.
The clock!! Finally!! Of course that isn't the only reason I watch your channel. There is also the snippy wit, loving digs and of course things to do to love my home more. 💙
The rule of thumb I use for hanging art (learned from someone who worked in a gallery): mentally divide the picture into an upper 1/3 and a lower 2/3; that dividing line should be at your eye level. Another wall decoration that I didn’t hear mentioned: Maps! Framed maps of favorite places can make great meaningful decor.
Tall spouse vs height impaired spouse. My husband always has to be told not to hang artwork too high per my perspective. Most of my art comes from local artists, family or trips. Having stories to go along with my art pieces makes it special to me. I think that's what makes it different from prints bought in big box stores. Enjoy your clock Nick!
I see most of your fans 0:00 are happy about that clock. It's a nice clock. But.,. Nick you need to do your own thing. Decorating is personal. I know you may or may want a change. I'll enjoy seeing whatever you choose. It's your new home and the change could be good. Love ya Nick. 😔
I understand why you said what you said. It's hard to generalize and make absolute rules for wall decor. But many times you just know when you stand back and look it doesn't give the desired look or feels wrong. Giving guidelines does help and thank you
I really appreciate the way you approach wall space as decor! It's great to acknowledge that we can make distinctions between artworks and wall decoration, and how they interact as well. And hurray for the Clock!
I am not a minimalist, but I have learned that my taste in art emphasizes negative space. Whether in the art itself or through how it’s matted/framed or the vignette it creates with the surrounding objects, I like art that draws attention to the negative space. It’s like the extension of the piece itself and becomes the most thoughtful, intentional, and provocative (yet also restful??) part.
Totally agree about negative space. My dear departed mother couldn’t abide any blank space on her walls. Consequently, her house was chaotic and cluttery I love my artwork, but like to give each piece or vignette space to breathe.
Listening to this as I hand-stencil my laundry room walls. Nick, I know we’ve talked about it before, but I truly would love to host you if you’re ever in Colorado, US, I think you’d be proud of what I’ve done with my current home.
A latina home (my guess from the surname)? Nick should consider this, he'd eat great too 😁 And you must send pictures of your basement beforehand so he knows there are no bodies 😆
I love the following idea for personalized wall art that I got from another UA-camr (Evelyn Hernandez): Enlarge a personal photo or digital print (lots of shops on Etsy have them in a variety of categories) and then use Modge Podge or other decoupage liquid and "brush" the Modge Podge over the print. Try keeping the direction of the brush strokes in line with the pattern of the item you're "painting" (e.g.: for an orange, you would "paint" in a circular motion, for clouds, a wispy motion, etc.). This gives the print a much more authentic oil or acrylic look. Once the print has dried, frame it and hang. I've done this on a few projects and love the look! For enlarging the print, there are a number of resources that aren't expensive: Wal-Mart, Target, CVS, Walgreen's, Staples, etc. Google places near you. Good Luck creating! :)
You can also buy a texture paint at Michaels in the acrylics paint section. I've used it on some reproduction posters, then framed for a more textured and realistic finished look. It's made especially for this purpose, sorry the name evades me at the minute. ✌🏽
I don't like big clocks, but I like the fact that you do and that it is personal to you. I like pictures, picked up second hand usually, all quite random.
Don’t even get me started about the trollies and trains they took out of the city Nick. Also my dad told me that back in the day there was a ferry that went from Vancouver to Steveston to Ladner. That would be great for tourists now.
I love using mirrors. I have a rather large long living room and I put six long rectangular mirrors on the far wall. Three on either side of a window, and I couldn't live without them now. Whenever they come down for painting, I can't wait to get them back up because it feels claustrophobic, even in a large room. Have a faux tree in one corner and a hanging lamp in the other that reflect and it looks nice... open.
I moved a couple of months ago and everything in my living room is in the same configuration as in my old house - for the time being. AND it was bothering me that you appear to have done the same - Except - hyperventilation - the clock was missing. I watched you but my eye was continually wandering to the blank space where it belongs. And today - It’s Back! Thank you. Btw to the extent I could I put everything in the same area in the kitchen so I don’t have to hear my husband complain that he can’t find anything. We will move it around later as we find what may work better. It only took 70+ years to figure this out.
I appreciate this video. Timely subject as I have *gasp* an enormous blank wall with a headboard-less king bed. It needs something. Nick, you just gave me many ideas. Thanks!
When my friend's Mum died, she took some of her clothes (the ones that held sentimental memories) and made them into a small patchwork wall hanging. It was a great way to hold on to memories of her Mum without keeping bags of things.
I like the rule of 2/3rds. If a piece takes up 2/3rds of the space it's in, you can take 1/2 of length and width to build the margin (1/4 on each side). Apply this to individual pieces to compose a gallery wall. So a 10"x12" piece will need 2.5" of white space on each long side and 3" on each short side, or an average of 2.75" all around.
The 2/3 rule confuses me! It seems to say a 10 by 10 foot wall (100 square feet) should have 66 square feet of art. Which would be an 8x8 foot canvas or ‘gallery’. That’s HUGE!! If there’s a sofa and side table on that wall, covering say 25 square feet of wall space, you’re left with 75 square feet, and you ‘should’ have 50 square feet of art? Still huge. Seems like a 3 or 4 by 5 foot canvas etc (20 square feet) would be ample. What am I missing?
The Wild World of Walls, oh Nick! So much to love in this video as in all your videos. You are so talented, so funny, AND such a great writer and teacher! Thank you for YOU!!
I’m personally very drawn to textile art as opposed to artwork or pictures. In the past I’ve used quilts and oriental rugs. Right now I have a huge llama/alpaca hanging from Peru on the wall behind my couch. It’s ethnic and dimensional because of the fur. I love it.
Thanks for being my designer Nick. Got the framing on the living room walls done and I just found a beautiful painting today at an antique store to put on them. It looks so amazing. I never would have done it without your tutoring. I also got a clock😊
I love your videos. They are packed with great advice along with your outstanding sense of humor. I think you are hilarious and super smart at decorating. Your videos include my two favorite things, home decor and laughing. Thank you Nick!
My hand made quilts I decorate as wall art. Some quilts are seasonal. In addition I have a vintage door from my husbands grandmas house that leans again a 7:50 wall with a quilt draped. 😊
Thank you Nick's Grandpa! That beautiful piece of salvaged (horded😉) artwork is my entire life growing up in Vancouver. After pausing and squinting at the screen to read and reminisce. As a Canuck in Oz far from home, that one hit perfectly. Thanks Nick, it's a really amazing and creative piece.
I work at a camera store that prints pics! I've been putting my pictures on my walls. It's been really nice to see some gallery walls of mine coming together
Thanks, Nick! Good discussion. Glad you mentioned scale. It seems that some people have a difficult time committing to a really large piece of art. It's gonna be a statement, for sure. But on a large wall - especially if its the first thing people see when entering a room - a large-size piece of art can make the entire room more coherent. It packs more of a visual wallop than a grouping of smaller pieces. And don't hang it too high! Have seen that far too many times - it's discrimination against short people! 😄
The clock! Still set at 12:18! My mother, an artist, used to describe too much space between pieces on a gallery wall as "broken teeth"! I love the destination role from your grandfathers basement. They are beautiful things.
Warning! The clock disappears on Saturday (calm down - just how videos get edited) and then she is back forever!

@@draugno7 married into the name, but I’ve followed Nick for years and value his advice. Still trying to find his email so he can roast my home 😂
Personal and individual taste decor of course. Im decorating my tiny condo for me.
Wrong Nick!!! We are here to watch you!!! Your advice is a bonus. You are the cherry on top!
Nick is looking very distinguished! 😍
Your clock is back. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. It’s a statement piece. I love it.
So excited to see your new home take shape. 🙌🏼 Also you look very handsome and put together! 🤩☺️
I am so happy it is 12:19 again.
You do you! 😂
Don’t even get me started about the trollies and trains they took out of the city Nick. Also my dad told me that back in the day there was a ferry that went from Vancouver to Steveston to Ladner. That would be great for tourists now.
I am so glad to see your clock back! Also, love your new floor lamp.
I love using mirrors. I have a rather large long living room and I put six long rectangular mirrors on the far wall. Three on either side of a window, and I couldn't live without them now. Whenever they come down for painting, I can't wait to get them back up because it feels claustrophobic, even in a large room. Have a faux tree in one corner and a hanging lamp in the other that reflect and it looks nice... open.
Woooohoooo! I've been missing The Clock !!! I was hoping it would be taking its Rightful Place in your New Home ! 👏🏻🏠 🕓
“Pictures of somebody’s old relatives. “. What a hoot, but totally right on.
Can't go on without the clock ❤
Love your separate rooms and not the open concept.
A gallery wall~ this is how the numerous decor styles I like can place nice together.🥰 Thanks for the inspo, Nick.
I appreciate this video. Timely subject as I have *gasp* an enormous blank wall with a headboard-less king bed. It needs something. Nick, you just gave me many ideas. Thanks!
I'm uncomfortable with things hanging on the wall over my head when I'm sleeping. So I went for a lovely headboard. Just a thought.
When my friend's Mum died, she took some of her clothes (the ones that held sentimental memories) and made them into a small patchwork wall hanging. It was a great way to hold on to memories of her Mum without keeping bags of things.
OUR BELOVED CLOCKKKKKKK 🎉
The clock is its own character in the videos, a cohost of sorts.
I like your clock! At least it's right twice a day, which is more than I can say for some people
Don’t forget tapestries, quilts and other textiles for your walls. Tami
I’m personally very drawn to textile art as opposed to artwork or pictures. In the past I’ve used quilts and oriental rugs. Right now I have a huge llama/alpaca hanging from Peru on the wall behind my couch. It’s ethnic and dimensional because of the fur. I love it.
Cool
Yeah, that was in the video.
Thanks for being my designer Nick. Got the framing on the living room walls done and I just found a beautiful painting today at an antique store to put on them. It looks so amazing. I never would have done it without your tutoring.
I also got a clock😊
Nice to see the clock back!
I love the clock! Glad that it's in the new place!
Yay, the clock is BACK !!! :)
Thanks for a mid week video...really appreciate it! Love your new lamp. Tell us more about it!
OMG!!!! The clock is back!!!! Oh please put the batteries back in. Art and functional!!! Loved this video.
I love your videos. They are packed with great advice along with your outstanding sense of humor. I think you are hilarious and super smart at decorating. Your videos include my two favorite things, home decor and laughing.
Thank you Nick!
Cool, so nice to see your iconic timeless clock is back !! We missed her !
Love your clock, and the common sense approach you take in regard to wall decor.
The clock! Hello, old friend!
The comeback we wanted: the clock. 😍
My hand made quilts I decorate as wall art. Some quilts are seasonal. In addition I have a vintage door from my husbands grandmas house that leans again a 7:50 wall with a quilt draped. 😊
We all ❤ the clock ❤
We do, indeed. Check ALL of the clock comments. Yikes.
The clock is back! All is well in the world.
Yay! Great to see your clock up!!
❤❤ *YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS?! **12:17** ITS NICK TIME!!*
Big clock has returned. I love it.
The clock! Still set at 12:18!
My mother, an artist, used to describe too much space between pieces on a gallery wall as "broken teeth"!
I love the destination role from your grandfathers basement. They are beautiful things.
All negative space can feel a bit "insane asylum" -- haha that is GREAT. funny Nick.
