As an artist I fully support buying from local artists ( I do it myself all the time) :) Without you buying our work we have no reason to exist. Thanks Nick for bringing that up.
Yes unique advice. 👍 I bought pottery I really liked (something functional, but nice to look at too) - but never considered buying paintings from an artist, cause I paint myself. But even the journey of visiting different galleries - seeing their styles and maybe also get inspiration might be great. And that could further inspire your vision of the room you want to redecorate.
20 years ago I dithered over an original piece at a local art show, walking away, coming back, trying to think where I would hang it, finally deciding it was a little out of my price range. Ugggh...I still think about that painting to this day and bemoan the fact that I let it go. I was young then and didn't realize if you hike back through a crowd on a blazing hot day for a second look at something, you should probably buy it.
I have tons of original art I acquired locally. Some pieces are from artists who have had shows on an international level. I love having these one of a kind photos, paintings and sculptures.
Yes! We have been collecting for a while but I have a few really special pieces from local artists and a couple things we've done ourselves. They all still make me happy when I see them.
Vintage pieces can surprise you. My husband had an old beat-up dresser that he'd picked up off the street long before we met. When he died, I couldn't bear to get rid of this big ol' thing. I kept meaning to call a junk man and just never could bring myself to do it. It moved 500 miles away with me, spent a year on my screened porch while I pondered refinishing or painting it. Then someone in my neighborhood said he knew a furniture refinisher. Well. This guy took it away, and three months and $900 later, I had a beautiful transitional piece (early midcentury modern/late art deco), solid walnut with quartersawn oak trim, and now it's my dining room buffet cabinet.

Years ago I heard someone say that the things you love will all coordinate. If you're into modern art, coastal style, early American, art deco, whatever, you'll find that the items you choose will all relate somehow. So pick out things you love and put them together - you'll be surprised at how "designer" your home will look.
I showcased my daughter's art growing up. She's now 20 and double majoring in art and math. I'd like to think that filling our house with art, books and nature helped her lean into her artistic talent.
One time i was showing my mom something I'd bought in an antique store or thrift store, and she said, "Oh, that's very you. It's got that swirl thing you like." I had no idea what she was talking about, until she pointed out that so many of the things I'd collected had some version of a swirl, either in the woodwork or the pattern or the texture. It was completely unintentional, but clearly a pattern that reflected my taste. I love that.
I just “found” Nick and at age 79 I think I’m in love. He’s got a great eye for design, great humor and he has me laughing out loud. My husband keeps asking me “what’s so funny?” Told him that I have found a “boyfriend” … and that made him laugh out loud!!!
Tips from an artist on how to get reasonably priced art (and still support artists)! 1.) Buy prints! They look good on a wall, are much cheaper than the original piece, and let artists make extra money off work they have already created! 2.) Go to fairs! You can get unique pieces there, support (and even become a mini patron of) a local artist, and generally the pieces there will be priced to sell. Also, you might be able to get to know the artist and get a piece tailor to you! 3.) Buy a piece second hand! You can stop there and support second hand places, but you can also find a local artist to add onto it. Cheaper than a completely new commission and can be a fun project for them!
If you live near an art school or a university with an art department see if their students host an art sale. Our local U. Glass students have a beautiful sale in late Nov/early December.
I agree. I work at a high-end print shop where we photograph artists' original pieces so they can sell prints and not have to sell the originals. Buying prints from the artists helps them keep going.
The Ann Arbor Art Fair is huge & a great place to find unique items! One year, there was a metal sculptor who brought absolutely massive pieces, so if you wanted a 12" iron tarantula sculpture for your front yard so the neighbors stay away from your house, that's the place.
Yes! I have some stunning pieces from Estate sales, gallery closures, prints from Etsy, ect. And a tip on prints: you can download the rights from prints to your computer and print onto canvas printer paper. Add some wood magnetic poster frames and you can have some really beautiful classy original pieces for SUPER cheap.
I enherited a bunch of teak danish pieces from my oma & opa after they passed. They kept them so beautifully and owned them probably since 1960 onward when they settled in Vancouver after living all over the world. I treasure those pieces so much!
I’m lucky to have inherited interesting pieces, too. My grandmother loved painting and she had a lot of her mother’s Victorian furniture. My uncle gave me the old mahogany and marble tables! I’ve got a funky painted milk glass lamp from the early twentieth century, too.

I have a pirate’s grotto for my bathroom, and a glow in the dark mural I painted on a foam insulation board as our headboard. It’s a good thing Nick isn’t coming here anytime soon!
Estates sales can’t be over looked. I found a small piece of artwork no one paid any attention at all and estate sale because it was in a substantial taller wall at an estate sale. It was overwhelmed but I looked closely. It was $10. I bought and it was a real ink and watercolor by a well known vintage Scandi artist worth $450. It didn’t fit my style but I love it not only because it is great art but because it is the odd piece in my space.
I have been buying prints by independent artists at tattoo conventions and comic cons for over a decade, and when my renovation was finally finished, I was so excited to throw them up on the walls. I bought all my frames (and framed cross stitch samplers) from a £1 charity shop down the road, and 3 years later, I still get a little thrill every time I see one of my gallery walls. It's super personal, every piece has a story, and I always get compliments on it when people come over 😊 Highly recommend!
So I love supporting local artists but I'm also a poor so something I've found lovely for wall art is cutting illustration plates out of old books. Particularly old art books and then a thrift store frame. Currently I'm working on a wall of children's book illustrations (I'm a HUGE children's books fan) -- I have some Ernest Shepard prints, a John Klassen, Timothy Basil Erring's illustrations from Tale of Despereaux, etc. Very inexpensive if you find the books used and a great way to upcycle old, damaged books. ❤
I've done the same thing with high quality calendars instead of books. A very economical way to curate a small collection of prints from a favorite artist, style, or theme. Something like Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keefe, Frank Lloyd Wright, etc.
I've framed pages from old children's books that were too damaged to read. One of them, I've hunted for a replacement copy for years, but the only available copies in English are from a newer edition with completely different illustrations. The original illustrations were amazing.
Our son's friend is an artist, and we commissioned a metal tree sculpture, floor to ceiling and extending to the connecting wall for our bedroom. Our ceilings are hickory. It is definitely my personality, and we live in the middle of a forest. Our house is very spacious but not themed so it will not look overwhelming. I know it is not everyone's style but but we will love it. I love art that is regionally and personally made as a one of a kind.
My many mirrors (strategically placed) saved my sanity in my teeny Manhattan bedroom- opened it up and bounced the little light that came from the windows - the difference was literally night and day.
My husband despises lamps. I literally just walked over to him and declared: "Nick says that lighting is one of the most important things in the home because it brings warmth into your space. This is why you MUST welcome lamps into your life." It was nothing short of an intervention. Thank you Nick for giving me the weight of your authority in all my disputes with my partner. It sure helps that I always agree with you!
I also hated lamps for a long time. My problem was not wanting to go around flipping a million little switches, so I put wifi bulbs in my lamps and bedside sconces to get around that issue and most of them are on timers now. Maybe your husband is similar and would be more open to having more lamps if they were easier to manage? There are also some remote-controlled bulbs where you can put the remote holder on the wall right next to the regular light switch. (and yeah, I get that you're joking, I just had a "oh I totally get that" moment over here 😂)
It doesn't have to be expensive to personalize your art. I have even found a couple of fun pieces at thrift stores. I was disassembling a framed amateur original at checkout and said, "I'm leaving the frame for you to resell." The clerk looked at the painting and said, "It's usually the opposite." 😊

If a room is painted beige and all the upholstered furniture is beige, that's fine as long as the floors are dark or interesting, there are dark wood furniture accents, coloured vases with flowers and potted plants, elaborate gallery walls or large colourful paintings. Books, a piano, a tree, etc.
I love the traditional intro to the subject where you say "here's something that might be wrong with your home," and then you waffle about how maybe you're wrong and the viewer's home is maybe beautiful, and then you talk yourself back around to the fact that people who clicked on that video probably are concerned about improving the thing you're talking about, since they're here. It's fucking adorable. Lol.
I'm a writer and an artist. I use colour and there's much comfort in my home. I'm an old Hippy and you walk into my home and you're surrounded by day beds and floor cushions. Silk curtains made from vintage saris, coffee tables scattered about, no overhead lighting just lots of lamps here and there. My style won't go out of fashion because it's never been in fashion, it's pretty well timeless.
Sounds like a place I would be inspired by...got any photos up anywhere? Instagram? Pinterest? Other? Also, I planned on doing something with saris myself; I hadn't thought of curtains. Thank you for that. Where do you find them?
@@nodoboho I'm in Australia and I get my saris from Flemington flea market. I'd suggest you scour all the flea markets you can, they're becoming increasingly difficult to find. Because I love silks and all natural fabrics, I've found the sheerer type of silk sari make the best curtains, use all contrasting colours on your windows to give yourself a really warm effect and when the sunlight hits them you're getting the beautiful mosaic effect of colour streaming in. At the moment I'm in the process of making some new floor cushions out of a heavier gold and burgundy sil sari I picked up about 9 years ago. Just remember with the solid coloured vintage saris, the dyeing process in India was a bit iffy pre 1980's so be careful of colour transfer with darker shades. I've got loads of multi coloured handmade floor rugs on the floors too, you can buy them at any hippy shop. They can be a bit pricey but if you love colour and warmth they look fantastic. So do the kantha worked cotton bed throws, I use them everywhere, as lounge throes on the beds, they look great everywhere, I've bought most of mine on eBay direct from India. 💙💜💛💚

Your "hate" for the dining bench is funny. We have a beautiful customized one and when we have guests, they actually compete who sits there. One of the best choices we made for our dining area. It is never empty as long as there are people in the area. Another wonderful video.
I agree with the premise that too many homes are boring. Like fashion, sometimes the less safe option brings big payoff. I dislike homes that look like mid priced hotels.
You’re absolutely right about the shapes. We swapped our rectangular kitchen table for a circular one, and it breaks up the rigidness between the rectangular kitchen island and the sofa. Edit: I died when you brought up kid art, as I have some framed on our walls 😂
Thrifting can be a great way to get beautiful hanging mirrors for prices that are much more reasonable than new ones. Also it is a great source for Frames even if you don't care for the art inside the frame. No shame in upcycling a frame with new. Nick, I remember making potato stamps.
I put a bunch of hexagonal felt tiles on our enormous wall in our great room, and let me just say -- the "shapes making your house more interesting" and "wall treatments making your house more interesting" are very true. People always know EXACTLY what to compliment me on when they walk in

One of my art pieces is a framed alga ‘leaf’ that was collected by my botanist-in-training granddaughter. Simple black frame the only cost. Unique and wonderful! ‘Art’ is everywhere!
@@esse1900if you want to see the colour in advance... if you have photoshop you can sample a colour and use it to fill a new layer. Then pick that colour and do a new layer using 20% saturation of that colour. Put a new layer of white under that so you can see it. I guess some other software has similar.
Never underestimate the impact of blowing your favorite photo up to poster size and putting it in a nice frame. That scenery photo, or close up of a flower or a dog or even a meal. It's all art just waiting to be hung up. I even have a print of coccolithophores my friend took using an electron microscope. Why? Because it looks cool and is unique.
My elderly father and step-mother are PBS fans and he took a cell-phone picture of the TV (there was a program on at the time featuring old churches) and had it blown up at the local pharmacy and had it framed. It turned out beautiful. It actually looks a real painting.
I bought a framed and matted print at a thrift store. Removed everything except the frame and the matte, went to hardware store and purchased magnetic, metal sheeting to fit within the frame. Painted it black and hung it on the wall. All of our magnets from our travels, go on it. That’s my way of displaying my Travel art and you can rearrange it at any time. 😊
Nick I've been watching you for a few years now, so I've addressed my lighting, including warm light bulbs, rightsizing my rug choices, lushes drapery hung next to the ceiling, no word art (ever), no farmhouse anything, utilizing natural materials, adding pops of color through all the soft goods, utilizing art prints from local artist, and using a lot of textures where color is natural. I do love vintage furniture as nothing compares to fine quality and livability. And I do love my wood floors, it warms up my whole home. Thanks for another great video. PS: Yes, I do remember making/playing with potato stamps! lol
My late husband was an architect (architecture degree), but had a minor in 2D art. We bought paintings and lithographs from local artists throughout our marriage and I now have a wonderful collection that I love and enjoy. I can remember meeting the artist, selecting the pieces we wanted, having them framed, and selecting the perfect place to display them. The colors in the paintings/lithos don’t necessarily match my color scheme (and they don’t have to). The enjoyment they bring is all that counts.
I once came across an old, really big wedding photo of two strangers from the 1920s in a thrift shop and I remember thinking that buying that photo and putting it on my wall would be so weird, yet so much fun, because it's just so random to have a stranger's wedding photo in your home. My mom stopped me, but occasionally I thing about that picture and I can't decide if I regret not buying it 😅😅😅 But I would certainly like to go back there and see if it's still there 🤭🤭🤭
My favorite piece of art, and the one my living room is decorated around, is a painting my best friend created for me in 2004. It’s a Jackson Pollock style painting in the colors of Van Goghs Starry Night, mixing our 2 favorite artists. It’s what I relied on to bring my personality into my apartment. The other option was to decorate everything around my other favorite thing - hockey. 😂
Do not wallpaper your ceiling. Just...look, ive steamed miles and miles of paper off acres and acres of wall, and just dont paper the ceiling. But everything else Nick says is golden.❤

That's a fine line to walk, but it makes all the difference. I know because hobby is quilting, and a quick perusal of quilting peoples' sewing rooms online is enough to prove your point. Your humor is just what I needed this evening! I am an artist so the walls in my home have art on them When I paint my walls the color of the paint is a background for the art. Yes I have some art I purchased at a thrift store but I have other artists too. When you sell your art, the prices of art don't seem unreasonable. Most people have no idea how much the framing cost. I love your commentary. I did enjoy it!
Three cheers for thrift stores! Not only are they fun for art and random kitchen stuff, but often they have antique scratch and dent furniture for cheap!
When I started this video, I was convinced that by Nick's standards we would have a boring home but I might be wrong. My husband and I have a lot of antique pieces of furniture from family all over our home. We have a vintage steamer trunk that belonged to my great grandparents when they came over from Italy. We have 2 amazing chairs that belonged to his grandmother that I love!!! We also worked to refinish a ROUND antique dining table that needed some love and reuplohstered that we eat off of every day. I love this concept of putting some personality into your home and making it your own instead of a cookie-cutter home that looks like everyone else's.
I think furniture placement can give your space personality. I live on a street of almost identical 1940s Cape Cods where the front door opens directly into the living room. Each house has almost identical furniture placement. I went a different route placing my couch so that it’s back creates an entryway. Yes, that eats up some useable living space, but as downsized empty nesters we don’t need it. Several times during Trick or Treat, we’ve had neighbors ask if they can peak inside because they’ve noticed the different furniture placement thru the window.

Yes about lighting. I worked for a lighting company and my eyes were opened to the difference of how light affects mood. especially the lighting "temperature". Please keep bringing this up. As I walk into my friends homes, I always notice how poorly light temperature is considered. You don't have to be rich to buy all the same temp lamps. (Bulbs are for the spring!)
While house hunting, we looked at a house that still had some things that the owner had not moved out yet. Multiple paintings leaning against a wall, floor to ceiling book cases and a large, rolled up oriental style carpet among other things. I remarked to my husband that it looked like a house that belonged to a college professor. The realtor said, indeed, the owner was an art professor at the local community college! I've lived in the house myself now for 20 years.
I grew up with hoarders, have issues myself, and those super austere, all white everything, only 3 things in there rooms appeal to me so much lol. My house does fit my personality: style is all over the place - antiques, modern, a little country, a little punk lol , mostly messy but cleans up nice

I am blessed that my daughter is an artist and I have a lot of her artwork hanging up. I also have tons of antiques, many from older family that have passed, and that makes it special as well as beautiful ❤️

Right now, I have a huge old style European ceiling medallion from my parents' home that I want to add to the family/living/library room. It's about 5x x 3.5' and the room is large enough, just not sure if it'll hold up on the ceiling until the glue makes it stick, its HEAVY. Currently looking for two round swivel chairs for the room as well, there's too many square & round items, as we have three different seating areas in it. My mom was an interior designer and she always said that a mirror should always reflect something beautiful, so I've tried to do that. Yes, our mom made us kids potato stamps and homemade playdoh, great memory, thanks!

I don't have the boring house problem, I've been very lucky to have lots of friends that are artists over the years and my house is bursting with art, maybe too much for most folks.
Mum was a teacher, of course we did potato printing too. I have my parents coffee table from their wedding (1967 🇨🇦) after years of painting on it , it still is standing . Thanks for also recognizing the introvert.
Lol, I think my house would have too much personality. Totally agree with all of this. As long as your choices coordinate (not always matching) and tell a story. I love houses with personality. It tells you so much about a person. It breathes life into a home. "Dressed to sell" houses make me so uncomfortable. Even minimalist houses can have personality. It's the straight from retail store homes that make a home seem cold. Personality can even be done on a budget. Love me a good DIY, lol 100% have taken good hard wood furniture off the side of the road and turned it into amazing pieces. Really good vintage cheap lights off eBay. Some oil rubbed bronze spray paint and sealer and you can have really cool lights that match without being matchy. Nick 100% did amazing explaining this!
Now I have to check studio McGee for inspiration. I live in a home with exposed rafters. Teka and caña guadia - Ecudorian teak & bamboo. I love them, I have a coastal bohemian vibe because, I'm 62 year old hippie baby living a mile from the Pacific in coastal farmland. It fits. Love to send you a link to photos of the more amusing aspects of this very special casita -- just for amusement purposes (the farm inspired ceramic borders...cows, chickens et al...and the chickens and cows strolling by...makes me chuckle daily 😅) Interesting mix of materials. Some quite expensive up north, typical, economical, and durable that are the norm here. No boob lamp...we just screw a bulb into a socket and let the neighbors see our electric is working! Yes!!! My sister-in-law "MEDUSA " everything is squares, shower curtain print-bath rugs, towels identical 😮, living room, area rug, with matching plastic frame art, everything!!! Never have I EVER wanted matching area rug and identical print for the wall framed in tacky gold plastic. Its not lack of money, its bad taste.😂
I knew a family whose sister passed away and she had teak wood furniture from a dining room table with chairs, cabinets, coffee and end tables, etc. in mint condition, including other gorgeous items. One of the cabinets was a similar style to Nick's West Elm bar cabinet. Because the family were in town and in a hurry to "get rid" of everything as they put it, offered to me to take whatever I wanted for free, as long as they didn't have to haul it out. I declined because I wasn't into teak wood at the time. Now I'm kicking myself in the a*s because that's what I'm starting to buy now and love it!!🤦

We did potato stamps with my grandma. We also mounded up snow piles, then dug out Fred Flintstone houses !!! I had grandma make up bowls of water &food coloring. Yes we painted them!!! Inside and out. Too bad all pictures were black n white then. We made trees, flowers and painted those too!! Lol. We would be out there ALL DAY My mither daid ," I should've known you were going to be a designer and painter😂
Yes on the family pieces! Almost all of my furniture is bits and pieces from my family, and it is so much more fun. For example, my dining table from my dad, is a glass table that a former ballet dancer designed and made in 1970s, love it!
This video made me feel so much better about my house. I don't have wall or ceiling treatments (because I lived through the 90s and 00s and I'm not going back) but otherwise, we're doing okay. It must be because we do have personalities after all! Thanks, Nick!
On personalised art and using kids art... My mum kept our art from school. She has a painting I made when I was around 9 years old of a cat on a lime green cushion with a purple background (very psychedelic). It is affectionately referred to as "cat on a lime in space". I'm in my mid thirties and she still has it hanging on the wall. Still makes me smile when I see it!
Been looking at homes lately, I live in Texas and may be moving to a different city. If I see one more GREY house, get walls, grayish vinyl plank flooring and grey cabinets, I’m gonna PUKE!
Local art festivals in rural areas can be a great source of affordable personal art. In the US, the Waynesboro Fall Festival in Virginia is a great place to get art. I think I have two assembly line pieces and one is in the guest bedroom (but it is a style I love) and one is in my hall. Those of huge pieces that are fun. But everything else is either family made or from art festivals. A lot of my decor is thrifted.

I bought pottery I really liked (something functional, but nice to look at too) - but never considered buying paintings from an artist, cause I paint myself.
But even the journey of visiting different galleries - seeing their styles and maybe also get inspiration might be great.
And that could further inspire your vision of the room you want to redecorate.
20 years ago I dithered over an original piece at a local art show, walking away, coming back, trying to think where I would hang it, finally deciding it was a little out of my price range. Ugggh...I still think about that painting to this day and bemoan the fact that I let it go. I was young then and didn't realize if you hike back through a crowd on a blazing hot day for a second look at something, you should probably buy it.
I have tons of original art I acquired locally. Some pieces are from artists who have had shows on an international level. I love having these one of a kind photos, paintings and sculptures.
Yes! We have been collecting for a while but I have a few really special pieces from local artists and a couple things we've done ourselves. They all still make me happy when I see them.

Vintage pieces can surprise you. My husband had an old beat-up dresser that he'd picked up off the street long before we met. When he died, I couldn't bear to get rid of this big ol' thing. I kept meaning to call a junk man and just never could bring myself to do it. It moved 500 miles away with me, spent a year on my screened porch while I pondered refinishing or painting it. Then someone in my neighborhood said he knew a furniture refinisher. Well. This guy took it away, and three months and $900 later, I had a beautiful transitional piece (early midcentury modern/late art deco), solid walnut with quartersawn oak trim, and now it's my dining room buffet cabinet.

Years ago I heard someone say that the things you love will all coordinate. If you're into modern art, coastal style, early American, art deco, whatever, you'll find that the items you choose will all relate somehow. So pick out things you love and put them together - you'll be surprised at how "designer" your home will look.

I showcased my daughter's art growing up. She's now 20 and double majoring in art and math. I'd like to think that filling our house with art, books and nature helped her lean into her artistic talent.
One time i was showing my mom something I'd bought in an antique store or thrift store, and she said, "Oh, that's very you. It's got that swirl thing you like."
I had no idea what she was talking about, until she pointed out that so many of the things I'd collected had some version of a swirl, either in the woodwork or the pattern or the texture. It was completely unintentional, but clearly a pattern that reflected my taste. I love that.
I too am a “ swirl person” but more feathery swirls, (arabesque?) definite dislike for paisley though.
I just “found” Nick and at age 79 I think I’m in love. He’s got a great eye for design, great humor and he has me laughing out loud. My husband keeps asking me “what’s so funny?” Told him that I have found a “boyfriend” … and that made him laugh out loud!!!
Tips from an artist on how to get reasonably priced art (and still support artists)!
1.) Buy prints! They look good on a wall, are much cheaper than the original piece, and let artists make extra money off work they have already created!
2.) Go to fairs! You can get unique pieces there, support (and even become a mini patron of) a local artist, and generally the pieces there will be priced to sell. Also, you might be able to get to know the artist and get a piece tailor to you!
3.) Buy a piece second hand! You can stop there and support second hand places, but you can also find a local artist to add onto it. Cheaper than a completely new commission and can be a fun project for them!
I bought a handful of pieces at a local art fair a couple years ago and gave most of them as gifts. It was well-received!
If you live near an art school or a university with an art department see if their students host an art sale. Our local U. Glass students have a beautiful sale in late Nov/early December.
I agree. I work at a high-end print shop where we photograph artists' original pieces so they can sell prints and not have to sell the originals. Buying prints from the artists helps them keep going.
The Ann Arbor Art Fair is huge & a great place to find unique items! One year, there was a metal sculptor who brought absolutely massive pieces, so if you wanted a 12" iron tarantula sculpture for your front yard so the neighbors stay away from your house, that's the place.
Yes! I have some stunning pieces from Estate sales, gallery closures, prints from Etsy, ect.
And a tip on prints: you can download the rights from prints to your computer and print onto canvas printer paper. Add some wood magnetic poster frames and you can have some really beautiful classy original pieces for SUPER cheap.
I enherited a bunch of teak danish pieces from my oma & opa after they passed. They kept them so beautifully and owned them probably since 1960 onward when they settled in Vancouver after living all over the world. I treasure those pieces so much!

I’m lucky to have inherited interesting pieces, too. My grandmother loved painting and she had a lot of her mother’s Victorian furniture. My uncle gave me the old mahogany and marble tables! I’ve got a funky painted milk glass lamp from the early twentieth century, too.
My mom is downsizing at 93 and we are eating up the teak furniture bedroom suites tables desks so beautiful.

I swoon over well-styled bookshelves, from the actual books as well as what my friends choose to collect & display with them
Estates sales can’t be over looked. I found a small piece of artwork no one paid any attention at all and estate sale because it was in a substantial taller wall at an estate sale. It was overwhelmed but I looked closely. It was $10. I bought and it was a real ink and watercolor by a well known vintage Scandi artist worth $450. It didn’t fit my style but I love it not only because it is great art but because it is the odd piece in my space.
I have been buying prints by independent artists at tattoo conventions and comic cons for over a decade, and when my renovation was finally finished, I was so excited to throw them up on the walls.
I bought all my frames (and framed cross stitch samplers) from a £1 charity shop down the road, and 3 years later, I still get a little thrill every time I see one of my gallery walls.
It's super personal, every piece has a story, and I always get compliments on it when people come over 😊

So I love supporting local artists but I'm also a poor so something I've found lovely for wall art is cutting illustration plates out of old books. Particularly old art books and then a thrift store frame.
Currently I'm working on a wall of children's book illustrations (I'm a HUGE children's books fan) -- I have some Ernest Shepard prints, a John Klassen, Timothy Basil Erring's illustrations from Tale of Despereaux, etc. Very inexpensive if you find the books used and a great way to upcycle old, damaged books. ❤
I've done the same thing with high quality calendars instead of books. A very economical way to curate a small collection of prints from a favorite artist, style, or theme. Something like Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keefe, Frank Lloyd Wright, etc.

I've framed pages from old children's books that were too damaged to read. One of them, I've hunted for a replacement copy for years, but the only available copies in English are from a newer edition with completely different illustrations. The original illustrations were amazing.

Our son's friend is an artist, and we commissioned a metal tree sculpture, floor to ceiling and extending to the connecting wall for our bedroom. Our ceilings are hickory. It is definitely my personality, and we live in the middle of a forest. Our house is very spacious but not themed so it will not look overwhelming. I know it is not everyone's style but but we will love it. I love art that is regionally and personally made as a one of a kind.

My many mirrors (strategically placed) saved my sanity in my teeny Manhattan bedroom- opened it up and bounced the little light that came from the windows - the difference was literally night and day.
My husband despises lamps. I literally just walked over to him and declared: "Nick says that lighting is one of the most important things in the home because it brings warmth into your space. This is why you MUST welcome lamps into your life." It was nothing short of an intervention. Thank you Nick for giving me the weight of your authority in all my disputes with my partner. It sure helps that I always agree with you!
I also hated lamps for a long time. My problem was not wanting to go around flipping a million little switches, so I put wifi bulbs in my lamps and bedside sconces to get around that issue and most of them are on timers now. Maybe your husband is similar and would be more open to having more lamps if they were easier to manage? There are also some remote-controlled bulbs where you can put the remote holder on the wall right next to the regular light switch.
(and yeah, I get that you're joking, I just had a "oh I totally get that" moment over here 😂)

It doesn't have to be expensive to personalize your art. I have even found a couple of fun pieces at thrift stores. I was disassembling a framed amateur original at checkout and said, "I'm leaving the frame for you to resell." The clerk looked at the painting and said, "It's usually the opposite." 😊

If a room is painted beige and all the upholstered furniture is beige, that's fine as long as the floors are dark or interesting, there are dark wood furniture accents, coloured vases with flowers and potted plants, elaborate gallery walls or large colourful paintings. Books, a piano, a tree, etc.
I love the traditional intro to the subject where you say "here's something that might be wrong with your home," and then you waffle about how maybe you're wrong and the viewer's home is maybe beautiful, and then you talk yourself back around to the fact that people who clicked on that video probably are concerned about improving the thing you're talking about, since they're here. It's fucking adorable. Lol.
I'm a writer and an artist. I use colour and there's much comfort in my home. I'm an old Hippy and you walk into my home and you're surrounded by day beds and floor cushions. Silk curtains made from vintage saris, coffee tables scattered about, no overhead lighting just lots of lamps here and there. My style won't go out of fashion because it's never been in fashion, it's pretty well timeless.

@@nodoboho I'm in Australia and I get my saris from Flemington flea market. I'd suggest you scour all the flea markets you can, they're becoming increasingly difficult to find. Because I love silks and all natural fabrics, I've found the sheerer type of silk sari make the best curtains, use all contrasting colours on your windows to give yourself a really warm effect and when the sunlight hits them you're getting the beautiful mosaic effect of colour streaming in. At the moment I'm in the process of making some new floor cushions out of a heavier gold and burgundy sil sari I picked up about 9 years ago. Just remember with the solid coloured vintage saris, the dyeing process in India was a bit iffy pre 1980's so be careful of colour transfer with darker shades. I've got loads of multi coloured handmade floor rugs on the floors too, you can buy them at any hippy shop. They can be a bit pricey but if you love colour and warmth they look fantastic. So do the kantha worked cotton bed throws, I use them everywhere, as lounge throes on the beds, they look great everywhere, I've bought most of mine on eBay direct from India. 💙💜💛💚

Your "hate" for the dining bench is funny. We have a beautiful customized one and when we have guests, they actually compete who sits there. One of the best choices we made for our dining area. It is never empty as long as there are people in the area. Another wonderful video.

I built a new home in 2002 and I painted the bedroom ceilings and one wall, slightly different shades of blue. I love it still. It's so very peaceful.
Thrifting can be a great way to get beautiful hanging mirrors for prices that are much more reasonable than new ones. Also it is a great source for Frames even if you don't care for the art inside the frame. No shame in upcycling a frame with new.

One of my art pieces is a framed alga ‘leaf’ that was collected by my botanist-in-training granddaughter. Simple black frame the only cost. Unique and wonderful! ‘Art’ is everywhere!

Then pick that colour and do a new layer using 20% saturation of that colour. Put a new layer of white under that so you can see it. I guess some other software has similar.

Never underestimate the impact of blowing your favorite photo up to poster size and putting it in a nice frame. That scenery photo, or close up of a flower or a dog or even a meal. It's all art just waiting to be hung up. I even have a print of coccolithophores my friend took using an electron microscope. Why? Because it looks cool and is unique.
My elderly father and step-mother are PBS fans and he took a cell-phone picture of the TV (there was a program on at the time featuring old churches) and had it blown up at the local pharmacy and had it framed. It turned out beautiful. It actually looks a real painting.
I bought a framed and matted print at a thrift store. Removed everything except the frame and the matte, went to hardware store and purchased magnetic, metal sheeting to fit within the frame. Painted it black and hung it on the wall. All of our magnets from our travels, go on it. That’s my way of displaying my Travel art and you can rearrange it at any time. 😊

Nick I've been watching you for a few years now, so I've addressed my lighting, including warm light bulbs, rightsizing my rug choices, lushes drapery hung next to the ceiling, no word art (ever), no farmhouse anything, utilizing natural materials, adding pops of color through all the soft goods, utilizing art prints from local artist, and using a lot of textures where color is natural. I do love vintage furniture as nothing compares to fine quality and livability. And I do love my wood floors, it warms up my whole home. Thanks for another great video. PS: Yes, I do remember making/playing with potato stamps! lol
My late husband was an architect (architecture degree), but had a minor in 2D art. We bought paintings and lithographs from local artists throughout our marriage and I now have a wonderful collection that I love and enjoy. I can remember meeting the artist, selecting the pieces we wanted, having them framed, and selecting the perfect place to display them. The colors in the paintings/lithos don’t necessarily match my color scheme (and they don’t have to). The enjoyment they bring is all that counts.

I once came across an old, really big wedding photo of two strangers from the 1920s in a thrift shop and I remember thinking that buying that photo and putting it on my wall would be so weird, yet so much fun, because it's just so random to have a stranger's wedding photo in your home. My mom stopped me, but occasionally I thing about that picture and I can't decide if I regret not buying it 😅😅😅

My favorite piece of art, and the one my living room is decorated around, is a painting my best friend created for me in 2004. It’s a Jackson Pollock style painting in the colors of Van Goghs Starry Night, mixing our 2 favorite artists. It’s what I relied on to bring my personality into my apartment. The other option was to decorate everything around my other favorite thing - hockey. 😂

Yes I have some art I purchased at a thrift store but I have other artists too. When you sell your art, the prices of art don't seem unreasonable. Most people have no idea how much the framing cost. I am new to the channel. I LOVE Nick`s personality! It's like listening to a witty friend.
When I started this video, I was convinced that by Nick's standards we would have a boring home but I might be wrong. My husband and I have a lot of antique pieces of furniture from family all over our home. We have a vintage steamer trunk that belonged to my great grandparents when they came over from Italy. We have 2 amazing chairs that belonged to his grandmother that I love!!! We also worked to refinish a ROUND antique dining table that needed some love and reuplohstered that we eat off of every day. I love this concept of putting some personality into your home and making it your own instead of a cookie-cutter home that looks like everyone else's.
I think furniture placement can give your space personality. I live on a street of almost identical 1940s Cape Cods where the front door opens directly into the living room. Each house has almost identical furniture placement. I went a different route placing my couch so that it’s back creates an entryway. Yes, that eats up some useable living space, but as downsized empty nesters we don’t need it. Several times during Trick or Treat, we’ve had neighbors ask if they can peak inside because they’ve noticed the different furniture placement thru the window.

Yes about lighting. I worked for a lighting company and my eyes were opened to the difference of how light affects mood. especially the lighting "temperature". Please keep bringing this up. As I walk into my friends homes, I always notice how poorly light temperature is considered. You don't have to be rich to buy all the same temp lamps. (Bulbs are for the spring!)
While house hunting, we looked at a house that still had some things that the owner had not moved out yet. Multiple paintings leaning against a wall, floor to ceiling book cases and a large, rolled up oriental style carpet among other things. I remarked to my husband that it looked like a house that belonged to a college professor. The realtor said, indeed, the owner was an art professor at the local community college! I've lived in the house myself now for 20 years.
I grew up with hoarders, have issues myself, and those super austere, all white everything, only 3 things in there rooms appeal to me so much lol. My house does fit my personality: style is all over the place - antiques, modern, a little country, a little punk lol , mostly messy but cleans up nice

Right now, I have a huge old style European ceiling medallion from my parents' home that I want to add to the family/living/library room. It's about 5x x 3.5' and the room is large enough, just not sure if it'll hold up on the ceiling until the glue makes it stick, its HEAVY.
Currently looking for two round swivel chairs for the room as well, there's too many square & round items, as we have three different seating areas in it.

I don't have the boring house problem, I've been very lucky to have lots of friends that are artists over the years and my house is bursting with art, maybe too much for most folks.
As long as the art is displayed correctly (maybe "intentionally" would be a better word) and not thrown around haphazardly you should be okay.

I have great memories of potato stamps - as we got older, we were able to carve out our own designs.
Lol, I think my house would have too much personality. Totally agree with all of this. As long as your choices coordinate (not always matching) and tell a story.
I love houses with personality. It tells you so much about a person. It breathes life into a home.
"Dressed to sell" houses make me so uncomfortable. Even minimalist houses can have personality. It's the straight from retail store homes that make a home seem cold.
Personality can even be done on a budget. Love me a good DIY, lol 100% have taken good hard wood furniture off the side of the road and turned it into amazing pieces. Really good vintage cheap lights off eBay. Some oil rubbed bronze spray paint and sealer and you can have really cool lights that match without being matchy.

I live in a home with exposed rafters. Teka and caña guadia - Ecudorian teak & bamboo. I love them, I have a coastal bohemian vibe because, I'm 62 year old hippie baby living a mile from the Pacific in coastal farmland. It fits.

Interesting mix of materials. Some quite expensive up north, typical, economical, and durable that are the norm here.
No boob lamp...we just screw a bulb into a socket and let the neighbors see our electric is working!

everything is squares, shower curtain print-bath rugs, towels identical 😮, living room, area rug, with matching plastic frame art, everything!!! Never have I EVER wanted matching area rug and identical print for the wall framed in tacky gold plastic. Its not lack of money, its bad taste.😂
Just loved the design examples with actual regular people in it! Gave me a weird sense of coming back to life.
I knew a family whose sister passed away and she had teak wood furniture from a dining room table with chairs, cabinets, coffee and end tables, etc. in mint condition, including other gorgeous items. One of the cabinets was a similar style to Nick's West Elm bar cabinet. Because the family were in town and in a hurry to "get rid" of everything as they put it, offered to me to take whatever I wanted for free, as long as they didn't have to haul it out. I declined because I wasn't into teak wood at the time. Now I'm kicking myself in the a*s because that's what I'm starting to buy now and love it!!🤦

We did potato stamps with my grandma. We also mounded up snow piles, then dug out Fred Flintstone houses !!! I had grandma make up bowls of water &food coloring. Yes we painted them!!! Inside and out. Too bad all pictures were black n white then. We made trees, flowers and painted those too!! Lol. We would be out there ALL DAY

Yes on the family pieces! Almost all of my furniture is bits and pieces from my family, and it is so much more fun. For example, my dining table from my dad, is a glass table that a former ballet dancer designed and made in 1970s, love it!

On personalised art and using kids art... My mum kept our art from school. She has a painting I made when I was around 9 years old of a cat on a lime green cushion with a purple background (very psychedelic). It is affectionately referred to as "cat on a lime in space". I'm in my mid thirties and she still has it hanging on the wall. Still makes me smile when I see it!

Local art festivals in rural areas can be a great source of affordable personal art. In the US, the Waynesboro Fall Festival in Virginia is a great place to get art. I think I have two assembly line pieces and one is in the guest bedroom (but it is a style I love) and one is in my hall. Those of huge pieces that are fun. But everything else is either family made or from art festivals. A lot of my decor is thrifted.
