For over thirty years, death metal legends Six Feet Under have been leaving their mark in the death metal scene. From breaking from the norms of traditional death metal to a more death n' roll, groove variant sound, the band has been one of the longest active bands from the peak of 1990's death metal. They are also the fourth best-selling death metal act in the U.S. Fronted by former Cannibal Corpse front man Chris Barnes, the band is crawling back from the grave with the release of their new studio album Killing For Revenge on May 10th through Metal Blade Records.

I have listened to Swarm so many times it is permanently burned in the old brain for good. So many great songs.
Hell yes, an incredible album, was his best work since actual CC. SFU have a few bangers but end-to-end album listening is actual CC and that one TK.
Actual CC being Barnes era of course. CC2 is a different band to me.
Such a shame Undead wasn't finalised by Barnes, the demo was killer.
I was actually hoping he stayed with torture killer but yes that album def still gets rotation here. I do like every other torture killer record to but I think swarm was the best so far

I’m excited for the new album! I think it might even be better than graveyard classics! Lol but for real Chris sounds great since quitting pot and alcohol so I’m super happy for him. He sounds so coherent in this interview. Sobriety looks good on him! As far as killing for revenge, I think it will be night and day compared to nightmares of the decomposed. Really excited to see what Chris continues to do in the future. Eeeeeeeeeeee!
Ps It was fun hearing him talk about cameo. I got my boyfriend a Chris Barnes cameo a few years ago and he was permafried and sporadic. I got another one a few months ago and it was honestly so heartwarming to see him so healthy and present.
I'm happy for Chris that he quit smoking marijuana. His sobriety is very inspiring to me. New Six Feet Under song sounds great too.

It seems like the interviewer is totally unaware of Undead album, because that's where SFU initially changed their traditional death and roll style to blast beats and fast tempo-songs, with then-new musicians onboard (Kevin Talley on drums, Rob Arnold on guitar,) after a departure of a long-time, original SFU rhytm section (Greg Gall and Terry Butler).
As much as Chris got shit for starting drama in the metal community before, I hope he can make a comeback
Maybe I’m completely out of the loop. What has been the fall out? I had noticed SFU wasn’t touring for a couple of years with no publicity.

That's not really drama as it is to opinions ... I know he had drama with Seth from AC but years and years ago and haven't heard of much drama since. I've seen SFU several times and all their music is consistently quality. Def happy jack owen is back though!
really wish you asked him about the swanson/butler/gall line up and why it dissolved, cause that was THE line-up man.
Chris and Sfu took a lot of flak over the years . I always liked them up to commandment . I hope quitting weed and alcohol helps him with his music/career. Great for him !

It's possible that Chris Barnes was the first Brutal Death Metal Vocalist. There's a huge difference between Cannibal Corpse - Butchered At Birth Vocals and Death - Spiritual Healing Vocals. It seemed that in 1991 the first really guttural Vocals came out of nowhere with Broken Hope, lmmolation, Grave, and Suffocation. Not sure who was actually first, but Death Metal definitely changed that year. I am surprised that nobody else seems to have issues with the Vocals on the Tomb of the Mutilated album. They seemed buried in the mix, the remastered version is an improvement, but the Vocals aren't as loud , and clear as Butchered At Birth, and the Bleeding. Incantation - Mortal Throne of Nazarene had the same issues, but the Upon the Throne of Apocalypse features the same songs with the Vocals more upfront.

I would consider Chris Barnes as the first guttural guy. Him and Frank Mullen had the deeper vocals, then Tomb of the Mutilated took it to another level. I agree that the vocals on Tomb of the Mutilated are a bit buried but I think it was done on purpose to provide an even more percussive approach. Incantations debut Onward to Gogotha the vocals are very much sitting below the guitar frequencies. Much of Incantations discography has a muddy very low quality aspect to the final mixes, except for the last two albums. I understand it's part of the charm but the two newer albums really show how good Incantation are as a band.
Have you seen Napalm Death from '87?
I was gonna say David Vincent tbh. Though maybe it depends on what we are considering guttural? Altars of Madness came out in 89, and a lot of people tribute that album to being arguably the first DM that had really evil sounding vocals. Not as deep as Barnes, but the Vincent had an incredible way of sounding brutal while also being intelligible imo.
I seen em with allen west and terry butler, for haunted with broken hope , but actually had never heard about em , walked into chris but didnt say anything , he was looking at my " major headache" shirt ( skull with bullet hole in forehead") great show, except we missed broken hope cuz thought they were headlining , however , once i realized who they were , it was like ....shit , all cool players..y friend maureen took some real cool photos of me diving , with chris,terry and allen, with me infront of em, very cool, do i still have the pic , of course not.
I hope the rest of the album is mixed better it sounds like the vocals are "detached" from the rest of the music. Like the band was finished and mastered and then barnes just sang karoke to it

Just tried to get a interview with him but it seems he is scared since the interviews we do at shine a light in the dark are based on the mental side of music and the interviewer is a therapist as well. Cause his reply was two words absolutely no. Hope the best for him and it sounds like they went back to the way they stated many years ago.
