I have hd5 s.the engine used is 271 gm.if its not 271, somebody has changed it.they all had a 271.seems like a lot of these units are still running.good machines.

I have an HD5 and I am pretty sure it is a 271 in it also.

Yes, 271. Some guys put 371s in them for farming.

i drove one of those critters about 45 years ago and i was always under the impression that they were the 53 series motor, dont think i am wrong either.

Muffler system distorting detroit sound?

The muffler on this engine is correct. The only way to have a "quiet" detroit is to mount the muffler next to the block. In installations where the muffler is not next to the block, they are loud! Larry cant hear as it is, so there you go.
