Sailing Singlehanded / Solent to Suffolk / Running out of Gas and UK Border force pays a visit

- I make moves to sail my Nicholson 32 'Stowaway' singlehanded from Bucklers Hard on the Beaulieu River to Pin Mill on the River Orwell.
After waiting out a Force 9 southwesterly I head out to complete the 170nm passage over a 42 hour period. Stopping only for sleep or to wait for the wind. Intercepted by border force twice on the approach to Dover and endure the inconvenience of running out of cooking gas.

For future info. Kettle of boiled water . Take gas cylinder off the boat ! Pour kettle onto outside of cylinder. Where the gas level is, the water will condensate showing level. The empty portion of the tank the hot water will steam off. Keep up the excellent work Sam
Nice tip, thanks 👌
Nicely done, Sam. Out of my league, but always good to see a much more experienced sailor manage everything so calmly. Even the lack of hot tea!
Thanks for watching Toby
Great video but it is making me want a boat now so the Mrs wont be happy 🤣 good to see the border force checking all traffic out there
Buy a boat, the mrs won't be happy....but you'll have the boat. Thanks for watching 😎
@@samsails9820 I am looking at boats now 🤣.
Made virtually the same trip in March 2016 with our new to us Westerly W33, We made it all the way to Portsmouth from the Hamble (!) then had to wait out weather before running non-stop from Portsmouth to Ipswich with a pit-stop for fuel in Brighton 'cos from having *way* too much wind it went to no damn wind at all! Had the advantage of being two handed but by the gods was it bloomin' cold!!! 27 hours non-stop, a full English in Fox's marina yacht club, sleep and beer. Cracking trip.
I've heard foxes do a good breakfast. I was spoilt on arrival by being invited onboard a friends' boat for breakfast. After the cold night crossing with no warm stuff I couldn't believe my luck!
Just subscribed, we’ve recently bought a Nicholson 32, really enjoying your content
Just subscribed. Nice finding another local waters ( UK & Ireland) channel. Our yacht was originally based in Littlehampton. Hopefully we’ll get to the UK south coast sometime soon (planning IoS this summer)
Couldn't do it without a hot cup of tea! As my old captain used to say to me "tea on the hour, every hour"
Great video, thanks!
Great video Sam!
Well done Sam, I really enjoy your videos.
Great video! Well done Sam 🙌🏻
love the new boat
Well done with the new boat.
That was real sailing Sam. My heart goes out to you. Wish I was 40 years younger. I learned to sail in a Nicholson 31, great sea boat too.
Thanks for watching 👍
Great Sailing ⛵️
well done Sam enjoyed it
Great adventure Sam! Looking forward to watching you this season. See you in the Orwell
Great stuff Sam, thanks for sharing. The difference between your former boat and this one must be huge..Enjoy.
Enjoyed watching that over my 'hot' cuppa this morning! Great passage Sam, considering the weather this Winter/Spring you had it pretty good. Welcome back home to Pin Mill.
Loved it mate.
Thanks for watching 👍
Amazing, congratulations! I felt that sense of approaching home after a long passage but also the feeling that you should not to make a final mistake when you were in sight of Harwich, then the calm when you go up the Orwell and the feeling of achievement once you see the mooring! Now she has a good home :)
Nice one Sam
I enjoyed watching your first sail on her so much I was looking at all the Jobs to be done as much as the sail itself
I look forward to seeing you Attack the hull and decking for some tips
Good luck
Stay safe..
I’d love to visit Buckler’s Hard and hopefully later in the Summer. You had a great first sail in a really good sea boat which hopefully will provide lots of sailing in the years to come. Well wear!
Well done champ
Great video. Bugger about the gaz! You always seem to make your sailing seem a breeze! 😊
Good job, fantastic cruise! @ It looks, this is a solid boat and, despite her age, still ready to offshore cruise... 40:26 - Is there no electric anchor windlass on the boat? I always have trouble manually raising the anchor, even though it's only a seven-meter boat and I have an outboard engine to help me...
Good Video , very informative and helpful for a newly qualified day skipper...
Thanks for watching 😎
Lovely video Sam. I am so pleased that I found your channel. Come up the Stour this summer 👍🏻👍🏻Looking forward to seeing your work on your lovely boat ❤
Thanks for watching, wrabness point on the River Stour is a favourite, amoung all the other nice places. 👌
Hello Sam,
Congrats on Stowaway! Great video, I hope she treats you well. Thank you for sharing. God bless!
Thanks for watching 👍
I was also at Bucklers hard at the same time as you.Got a project Colvic Atlanta there.Going back tomorrow morning.Gonna head East also shortly..Great vid….
Congratulations on a safe trip home. I’ve had Quark gear on my last two boats; their good value products from a British 🇬🇧 company. Looking forward to your future videos as I need to paint my decks too.
Great video Sam, been through the Solent a few times myself between Portsmouth and my mooring at ArunYacht club in Littlehampton. Great to see good sailing footage like this. All the best 👍
Thanks for watching 😎
Great video as always Sam, just upgraded myself from a centaur to a westerly tempest, looking forward to seeing you work and sail her
Thanks for watching, those westerlies are well built boats, enjoy the tempest 😎
Cracking video Sam, looking forward to seeing her being painted and spruced up.

Really enjoyed that video as I cooked breakfast and drank coffee on my boat in Bangor Marina, NI.
Obviously you were under time pressure. I would have stopped to get a gas refill! ⛵️
Well done, I can still remember my first Solent to ipswich on my new boat. Have done the at trip many times since and it's still a good feeling when you get back on the Orwell. Always a bugger heading west from Dover though. Looks like you will be doing plenty of A140 time too! (I live near Norwich as well)
Yes its not an easy trip westbound, thanks for watching
I learn something in every one of your videos Sam, and didn't know about that anchorage south of the Ramsgate breakwater. Good luck on the huge amount of work to the Nic 32 now.
I forgot to say that I don't think I would have the confidence or courage to cross the Thames estuary, alone, at night, in a new boat. You did brilliantly.
Its ok in favourble conditions, another anchorage is at Deal pier. Perfect for waiting out a head wind if westbound or for a favourable tide. Thanks for watching 👌
Fantastic sailing. I thought east coast Aust. could be challenging but without windfarms, fast ferries, rips, islands and so on, it a breeze. I felt your coffee withdrawals! Thx 😊
BTW Sam, at 32' does it .make you ineligible for any more Jester Challenges?
Nice boat! She has a lot of potential! Just pick away at it a little at a time. And keep it fun!
I had the pleasure of sailing on Gipsy Moth lV in 2019 when she was at Bucklers Hard. What a nice coincidence that they were offering day sails at the same time as the Beaulieu Autojumble!
Thanks for watching, sailing on GM must have been a great experience 👌
Cool.
Excellent video Sam. I love your clear calm explanations. I am OCD when it comes to safety and to hear you say something like, "I am just sailing with the Jib in the Orwell as it's dark and I don't want to me faffing with the mainsail in the dark" was reassuring. I felt it for you running out of gas. I carry one of those small camping stoves and cannisters just in case. I have subscribed as your explanations are clear, clam and natural and easy to understand. Well done. I would be interested to know the passage you took through or around the London Array wind farm.
Thanks for watching 😎 The passage through London Array WF is actually originally Foulgers Gat, can be found below www.crossingthethamesestuary.com/page29.html

Hi Sam
Love your channel and your new boat.
Not sure how far you intend to take the refurb. I'm a Signwriter, near Woodbrige, and would love to come down and rewrite her name for you..
As long as shes out of the water, of course!?
Cheers. Carle
Hi thanks for watching, could you contact me by email, samsails@yahoo.com. 😎
Hello mate, that was me that came alongside this morning at titchmarsh, 4th May, Ellen Louise, good luck with the new boat
👍
Well done that man, not for the faint hearted, see u on the water
A very interesting video. Next time, remember to use a check list and of course, buy a camping stove as a back up!! You did well regardless what with wind then no wind etc. The voyage itself WAS well planned I think.
Thanks for watching 😎
Looked sporty in parts
Ditto to the below comments making it look easy even though I know it wasn’t. Great work mate
Awesome journey - I should have been working, instead I was watching!
Nice vid Sam and love the new girlfriend... was on my list but hatch was too small. 12v kettle in the emergency box.... had the same gas issue and by hour 20 you want to sell the boat.. was a new bottle an reckon they leak if not super tight...
Thanks for the tip on the kettle 👍
Headroom!
Never thought it possible Mel 😆
Thanks for this nice videi.
1.What is your boat model and size?
2.Can you please tell - what device you use for filming ? Quaity looking very good.
Hi this is a Nicholson 32, [32ft], the camera is a Gopro 12
@@samsails9820 Thanks for i fo.
Nicholson 32 is American made boat and what year?
Sam you obviously like long keeler but do they point to windward as well as a fin?
I think there is a compromise with performance if you are going for a heavier boat with a long keel, there was quite a bit of research done on performance but out of many of those long keelers in the ultta heavy class, the nicholson was a good contender against the likes of twisters, halycon, etc
The boat looks in need of a good wash, some paint and varnish. The rest of it looks great! Nice Sanders sails, good canvas, nice instruments, engine, etc. Very nice.
Thanks for the videos.
Thanks 👍 definitly a bit of painting
Well done.
Did you go without sleep from Bucklers Hard to Ramsgate?
Also, you did the UK circumnavigation on a Hurley 22?
Thanks for watching. Not totally without sleep, I use a polyphasic sleep pattern of 15 minute intervals during longer trips and this is dependant on the area im sailing in. The circumnavigation was of GB in the Hurley 22.
If this video is a taste of your future films, we are in for some exciting times ahead, she sails like Katrina on steroids.
Despite the size difference the handling is quite similar although the Nic tracks a little better with the sails balanced.
When did you find time to clean the fenders?
Somewhere between cooking chilli and running out of gas 😉
Hey,
How much did you end up paying for her?
She sold for 9500
I'd say stowaway just couldn't wait to get out of that river and be out at sea where she belongs
