Moms is now and always will be a true comedian, as you listen to her delivery you can clearly hear her putting another brick in the road to pave the way for many of the greatest comedians today...#GOGETEMMOMS!
True, and it's sad that during her early years White America never knew her because of Racism, Bigotry, and Jim Crow laws....She and many other Brilliant Black comedians were relegated to what they called "The Chitlin' Circuit" - a group of Black (Colored-only) theatres around the country where they could perform, and many white comedians could come in, listen to them, and steal their material for their white audiences.....Integration changed some of that....Moms was great. She also appeared in movies early on (Race movies is what America called movies with All Black casts).
One of a kind is right.Moms had all of us including our parents cracking up watching the Ed Sullivan show in the 60's & 70's. RIP Moms keep them laughing in heaven.
My late mother introduced me to this woman and she has wonderful music with a hell of a personality to boot . Mom Mabley is wonderful , she`s the real queens of comedy for real .
I saw Moms at the Greek Theatre in L.A. in 1972 - she was the opening act for Ike and Tina Turner. She was wonderful. I knew of her work because during the '60s she appeared on talk shows and Ed Sullivan. I love this woman! RIP.
my mom had 1 of her concerts on 8 track back in the early 70s 1 that was adult rated lol I remember sneekin around to listen to it when my mom was out of the house she was way before her time and a excellent comedian and listening to her now she is STILL funny 40 years later
As people are reflecting on the Life of Phyllis Diller(another funny lady) it must be remember that when Ms. Diller was getting her feet wet in doing standup comedy, Ms. Mabley was already a veteran in making people laugh. It's sad people forget pioneers.
We all need to remember what she said if you truly want to respect this woman, remember the things she taught, that should be normal! We are all the same, and we should be color blind. Im a middle aged 48 year old white dude. This woman was and is awesome!!
My parents use to listen to her on the record player when we lived in DC. in the late 60's They would close the door in the bedroom and we would hear them laughing so hard.
As we remember Phyllis we remember Moms Mabley and Totie fields as well. they were MEGATRONS and laid the standards by which ALL will be measured! Anyone can spout out cursing but it takes REAL talent to deliver the goods, the act and the magic! Moms,Phyllis and Totie WE SALUTE YOU WOMEN ON LOVE AND LAUGHTER
I'm so glad someone shared this video on Tagged because i was sure feelin' low and my bottom lip was draggin' the floor. But i feel so much better for the great wit and comedy of this young lady, lol. Blessings to All. May All The World Find Peace.
No one, and I mean no one, makes me laugh like Moms!!! I absolutely love her! She was and is the funniest person ever to have lived. She would go right up to the line but never have to cross it into vulgarity. People think today's comedians are funny when they use every filthy word they can think of. Well that's not comedy. That's base and unfunny. It's crude and obnoxious. To be funny they need to take the cue from Moms, go up to the line, suggest, but let the audiences mind fill in the rest. That's the genius of her comedy. And make no mistake she was a genius and, I have no doubt, a wonderful wonderful wonderful lady!!!
I had never heard of Moms until I saw Whoppi Goldberg appearance on Jimmie Fallon show. Wow she was funny. I was born in 1972. Unfortunately she is one of the few people that I my generation missed. I remember Bill Cosby because he was on TV. I am so glad Whoopi Goldberg is doing a documentary on her life.
This "annoying old black lady" was in 9 Broadway shows, 6 movies, recorded 24 albums and was on 3 television shows, plus way too many concerts and club appearances to count. I'd say she was a hard working, talented woman. Her humor isn't going to appeal to everyone but in her prime she was very special to her audiences.
so glad whoppi did the documentary cause i had no idea who she was. heard the name but didnt know what she did and i am proud and astonished at her accomplishments. go moms!
2 minutes 4 seconds in, I already laughed out loud - and really laughed out loud, not just a lame typed "lol" - more than I can remember for any other comedy clip since I discovered YT in 2006.
@rehobothwell...You are so right! Thank you for posting a 'very true FACT'!. Although I appreciated Phyllis Diller, I heard the 'main stream' news media today claim incorrectly that Ms. Diller was the 1st female stand up comic!!! It's really bad when the main news outlets are allowed to put out wrong info on the airwaves which in turn misinforms thousands of gullible people. Jackie Moms Mabley was the best in my book!
She was in the same genre as LaWanda Page aka Aunt Esther on "Sanford And Son" Redd Foxx played the same "chtilin circle" as Ms. Page and was good to all his friends, so she was given a role on his show. This statement is made to remind ppl there were MANY unappreciated non whites in entertainment.
Wanda Sykes must have took inspiration from Moms...I listened to Moms when I was 10 and found my grand parents old record collection...there were stickers on it saying rated x
I never heard of her before today.I was watching Queen Latifa show,Whoopie Goldberg was a guess...she was talking about the documentary she did of Moms Mabley,so i google her up and indeed she was truly funny...
The audio cuts out before the punch line. They way I remember it it, she finished with: "...but he's dead...you shouldn't say nuthin' about dead unless it's good...well, he's dead...good!"
OMG, laughng so hard here, I lost my breath! What's sad is that if you had a comedian these days saying things like this, the PC crowd would be up in arms. I like things better way back!
@jazjett It has to staart at home.Back then, you didn't havr the threat of DYFS.Mom and Dad WERE DYFS.Sadly, the family structure's crumbling apart. The kids have to learn to like themselves, respect themselves, and others.I thank God for my raising. I miss my folks somedays more than others,This is foder for a panel discussion.

So your post will be removed. If You'd like to post again, without the the unnecessary language I will be more than happy for it to be here. Thanks.
I looked her up on wiki and found something out. She came out as a lesbian in 20's. That takes strength of character. I've just been exposed to her comedy and her material is quality.

When I was a kid I used to watch her on many of the variety shows and she would have us rolling on the floor laughing. A true classic.

Golden lady,oh so wonderful times ! Thank you so much for sharing this !!!
There were always Moms and Pigmeat albums in the house. We'd listen to them after church over my grandma house...
Great lady!!! Thanks Whoopi Goldberg for bringing this comedic gaint back to the forefront
Totally agree with Jay City...people like Moms had paved the way...She was ahead of her time...
When I was a teenager, I bought most of her albums and my friends & I would listen to her on my portable record player and just laugh.
Fortunate enough to see her along with Pigmeat Markham at the RKO Theater in Newark, NJ...one of the best.
We all need to remember what she said if you truly want to respect this woman, remember the things she taught, that should be normal! We are all the same, and we should be color blind. Im a middle aged 48 year old white dude. This woman was and is awesome!!

James Avant I adore Phyllis and moms. Both women broke ground
i use to sneak around and listen to her 8 track that my step father had. She was so funny.
2 minutes 4 seconds in, I already laughed out loud - and really laughed out loud, not just a lame typed "lol" - more than I can remember for any other comedy clip since I discovered YT in 2006.
LMFAO so glad my nana got me into old time comedy.
a real sage...way ahead of her time.

@jazjett You got that right! Mom said, you did.You did what you were suppose to do,and did what you were told. You didn't question authority, either!
I'm deceased.
@floydmichaelmoss Interesting piece of history. I never knew that. Some of the greatest performers have had this type of background. Real shame.
PREACH!!!!!!!
ROTFL!!!@MOMZ!!! Queen of SNAPS!!!
She might be the first comedian ever from what I'm reading.
You just listened to Howard "one love"
All these years I thought Tyler Perry was stealing his "Madea" routine from Eddie Murphy…I stand corrected!
Tyler Perry's Madea is actually his grandmother. She raised him.
He got that from "Moms"!!
@JubalCalif This great woman belongs on the female Mount Rushmore of comedy, along with Phyllis Diller, Roseanne Barr and Lucille Ball, Agree?
Stern! Brought me here
Moms Mabley was a fool! Monique & Sammore can't touch her.
se was great
My apologies for verrywellhung's comment. Had I seen it sooner I would have removed it sooner. but this user has been blocked.

I'm here for Stern!
This is a topic that can go on for days.Panel disscusion, for sure.
History...great comedy without being profane.
The First Woman Comedienne. Not Phyllis Diller.
That's probably where they got their inspiration from
Moms rulz!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did u know stern made moms what she
was ? Yup , he watched her as a kid & talked about her on his show. I'm sure he thinks she ripped his style off.
What time is it Moms?
Moms: I don` know. I thinks its 3:47 P.C.
"I married a man so old that he snapped his finger and broke his wrist!"
Oh my God, FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.....Hahaha!!!! Was she the first one to make" you're so ugly" jokes? XD
