This game came out at the apex of me being locked away and abused by a family member, and I ended up fleeing to escape. I don’t remember the months following the moment-my mind just shattered from the change.
I remember playing this game later and crying. The flashbacks, hearing your own thoughts, especially “No one can save you, and no one wants to” really stuck out to me, because I almost wasn’t. There were family that knew what was going on, friends too, but it was as if no one wanted or could help.
You fight your demons, in your nightmares, in the moment when you’re consumed and time becomes meaningless at a psychological trigger that warps you to another time in space where you relive your worst fears again and again. You see your friends, but they changed-or maybe you have-it’s unclear at the time.
And sometimes…that feeling of just wanting to let go, to “let the darkness take you” is SO appealing, but it’s imperative to fight, even when you’re a hair’s width from destruction.
Having that strength is really, REALLY hard, especially when you’re so broken, with that breaking being sudden and before you were JUST able to have a happy ending. The game, though short, feels like a parable.

I think a lot of people don't understand what the Realms of Light, Darkness, and Twilight are or what they mean. So that could explain people's views on Aqua's time in the Realm of Darkness. I'm pretty sure there are some in the fandom who have no idea that any of the Realms exists (based on how I've seen people talk on Twitter and any social media in general). As a result, when they look at Fragmentary Passage and take into account the 10+ years she spent there, they don't delve deep into her emotions due to their lack of understanding. Honestly, I've noticed a lot of characters get similar treatment from this fandom. :/
All that aside, I am so glad that you made this video to explain how Aqua felt. I love it when fans talk about things that often go overlooked for any character. Fans need to hear it.
While I'm not that big a fan of Aqua I do think the character has been through so much. I'm legit shocked that she's actually going BACK to the Realm Of Darkness as of Remind. Don't think her friends should let her do that. 😅
Remind shows her ptsd and Sora had a rage on during his final fight with Xehanort the brightest lights cast the deepest shadows.
I don’t understand how anyone could interpret Aqua as okay mentally after all of that. Not even just by interpretation, but that entire end bit of 0.2? That’s a Depression Style Shut Down of Emotions. I have literally done the same with my own depression ffs. I still can’t fathom that some ppl claimed that it was unrealistic and ooc for her to not be yelling at the unfairness. If anything, that huge amount of emotion would’ve been the ooc part.
Not to mention time goes different in the realm of darkness so who knows how long she really spent it could be 15yrs for all we know so yea she a badass😂

I’m personally waiting for Aqua’s revenge arc against Mickey not speaking about her being trapped. With how easily Sora could escape the Realm of Darkness, rescuing Aqua would’ve been another Tuesday for him. Aqua deserved better.
Excellent video, truly. I agreed with everything you said and couldn’t say it better myself if I tried. I have high hopes that the BBS trio will be getting their own game again after what we saw from ReMind with them going back to the RoD. I think here they could seriously expand more of Aqua’s character, say PTSD and maybe throw Anti-Aqua back in as a hallucination again like they had in ReMind etc.
Also I do remember reading on KH13 a good while ago that the original ending for 0.2 was actually a lot different, apparently Aqua was suppose to have a breakdown by the end instead of the triumphant ending we got, to be honest I’m not sure which I’d prefer but the original ending would’ve set up Anti-Aqua pretty well instead of her getting attacked by Ansem.
From Aqua’s point of view it probably felt like a few days or a week, which is why she didn’t go insane in the Realm Of Darkness. Same way how in Avengers Endgame when Antman was trapped in the Quantum Realm for 5 hours & in real time it was 5 years.

I love Aqua, I love all the Wayfinder trio. I think that of the trio's Wayfinder in my favorite, I do have individuals from Destiny and Days that I like better but not the whole group.
When it comes to Aqua's character I have to say that I agree with almost everything you said. She is a very kind person who has been tortured for the past eleven years. I kind of thought her not crying was born because she didn't really believe them, or because she was holding back the tears because she was around two boys she still saw as children. Her amount of crying was right for a person not by herself or just her closest friends, thinks of herself as a leader type person for the people around her, has likely trained herself not to cry or at lest cry softly, and who wants to prove she is alright so that she will be allowed to take part in fighting Xehanort who thanks to the Ansems and Terra she knows are still around and need dealing with. Notice it isn't until Terra is saved that she allows herself to cry more, gives herself time to rest before going with everyone else to the true final battle of keeping Kingdom Hearts closed.
One of my fears for the future of her character is that she is going to push and push to be helpful and worthy of being a Master that she is going to break somehow. She and her friends have not given themselves time to heal before the three of them go spelunking through the realm of darkness. It is far more likely then not that Aqua is not as alight as she is trying to make herself out to be. That said I am not sure that she will ever really be healed all the way from the eleven years of torture. It isn't really something that people get over, they learn to deal with it but the scars will likely always be there. One of the things that I am kind of expecting is for all of the Wayfiner trio to have moments of healing or remembering, or getting worst in the next game that they are in that moves the story forward and isn't just a recap.
That said holding in your emotions to keep a strong face to the people around you has been something that characters of this story have done since KH1. It has also always been shown to be a bad thing to do since CoM. What do I mean by that. Do you remember Sora in KH1 at the end of Hook's ship? Donald and Goofy are so worried because they think that Sora is likely very upset and they don't know how to help him. Then Sora notices that they are worried about him and don't know how to help, so he makes a brave face and talks about how he know that they are going to save Kairi and he is going to show her how to fly. We know that this is Sora locking his true feelings about the matter and putting on a brave face because less then half an hour later they are in Traverse Town and Sora is unable to keep the brave face and asks "How can you be so happy? there is still not sign of your King. Arn't you worried?" To which they basically say that they are putting all there hope on him as he is a wielder and so long as they are by a wielder everything will work out.
Sora has been keeping his negative emotions hidden for a very long time. He is a wielder, he brings hope and makes everything alright, he has to be alright because he is the glue that connects everyone. It is really no wonder that he fell apart in KH3, no one can keep up that kind of mask forever. Even if he has gotten very good at it. Notice that throughout KH3 he has moments where is mask either cracks or he lifts it up to try and be real with Donald and Goofy and the two of them do not react positive or with anything but worry(worry being the thing that in KH1 he learned meant he was not doing his job of being hope to them) and so he puts the mask back on, or duck tapes the crack I am not sure which.
In CoM RR we have Riku who learns that he is not expected to carry all the wight by himself something that it takes him several games to learn but we never said that anyone has to be a fast learner. He also learns that he needs to except both the positive and negative parts of himself, because trying to turn away form his fear, sadness, and guilt only makes them grow out of control. Sure keep the mask that shows what you want but deal with the negative parts of yourself to that you are not overwhelmed by them. Yes it takes several games before Riku is able to get a true balance but again we can't expect character growth to be fast.
So what does this tell us about the KH story? Well that masks are a thing that people use to try and protect themselves or others, There are right ways to deal with emotion and ways that end in the character backing down. It could be said that masks are a side theme of KH. Or more likely they are a side theme is most stories that are character driven.
I would like to talk about one more subject. The realm of Darkness itself. One of the other hidden side themes of KH is that Darkness isn't always evil, and light ins't always good. I have to say a hidden theme because a lot of people don't pick up on it, and the story is going out of it's way to make people forget that this is a theme at all. However I think that in the foreteller saga this theme is going to become a main theme of the story. One of the ways that I think that they are going to do that is by exploring the realm of darkness and what it truly is. A lot of the reason that the realm of darkness is as scary and horrible as it is so far in the story is because we know nothing about it. I think that the Wayfinder trio are likely to find something good or beautiful about the realm of darkness when they are there. It might take a lot of trails to get to the point and I am not sure what will be the "good" that they find, but I do think that it will happen.
Kingdom hearts are awesome! And I feel for aqua.. She has choices to make she has to save her friends and I can personally say that aqua will always be my favorite character in the kingdom hearts game series
How dope would it be to get like a Birth By Sleep branch-off game or KH3 DLC giving us more into what happened to her during her time in the Dark Realm
We might be getting something close to that after Melody of Memories. Remember the end of RE: MIND? The bbs trio went to look for sora in the Dark Realm. Nomura said that they'll be getting another game after all, so I believe we'll be exploring the Dark Realm soon.

I really don't see anything special about aqua in my opinion, but from what your saying, I think you might be on too something. Every keyblade master should learn to accept the darkness within themselves, if not then what you said about auqa and sora, will happen to them till they cant handle it no more. Terra should've been a keyblade master, not yet for aqua. Xhanort ruined terra's mark of mastery. and riku had every right to be a keyblade master, he went from darkness, to dawn. He accepted himself and saw light again.

Well, this is one of those franchises where characters don't have to eat to survive so they don't put cutscenes where they eat food just because they need to eat food to survive. I think the only time food is in a cutscene is sea salt ice cream, which isn't really something that can fill you up. It's more of a bond thing. ^^
