- On May 18, 1954, The Motorola Television Hour presented Atomic Attack, a gripping portrayal of a suburban family struggling to survive after a nuclear bomb is dropped on U.S. soil. Fifty miles away from a decimated New York City, the Mitchell family are trapped inside their house, with looters and poisonous radioactive fallout right outside their door. As the hours drag on, their nerves are stretched to the breaking point...as they realize that not all of them will survive this holocaust.
Atomic Attack was produced in conjunction with the Office of Civil Defense, and opens with the disclaimer, "The happenings that will now follow on your screen might be taking place in a suburban community some 50 miles from New York...but are entirely fictitious, of course."
Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Ralph Nelson ("Requiem for a Heavyweight," "Lilies of the Field," "Charly") and features an all-star cast including versatile actress Phyllis Thaxter (Clark Kent's adopted mother in "Superman: The Movie"), Patty McCormack ("The Bad Seed "(1956), and a young Walter Matthau!

By the third day in this household I'd rather be outside soaking in the radiation.
LOL
😂
They were exposed to radiation. We were exposed to overacting.
😂😂😂
"You people will only be risking your lives! Whereas I, will be risking, an almost certain academy award nomination, for best supporting actor "
Walter Matthau should have condensed ’Fail Safe,’ ‘Atomic Attack,’ and ‘The Bad News Bears’ all into one film.
☢️⚾️☢️
A more realistic portrayal than the hyperbolic ‘Threads.’ If it happens we should all just tough it out like Mrs Moor.
At least those crappy valve radios would not be wiped out by EMP
good point. I doubt there were any electronics that WOULD have quit.
@@orionred2489 BTW, a lot of the advice in this movie would have got people killed. It was just wrong.
No, good old tube-technology is pretty EMP-proof. Only the transistorized portable would have been at risk.
"We won't know regular for a long time'. Wow !!!
And now we resume music to die by
I have my motorola stereo with bass trumpets...
Everyone who was in school in the 50s can remember the stupid bomb drills .
My father said the were taught to “tuck your head between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye.”
We had them in ,60s also .
Remember the maps from c.d.had the plastic bomb .put on the red dot .and see you were in. Fried zone !
Thats ok honey we got to get busy replacing the earth population🤪
Duck and Cover.
Hey people-remember when this was made. TV I it’s infancy. You can’t compare it to now but should be viewed in historical context. Oops, that means people would have to know history-which they don’t!
“Bad Seed’s“ Patty McCormack!!!
She freaks me out at times.
Yes! I just watched bad seed a week ago one of my favorite "classic" movies
That I've owned for many years
I recognize her right away. eyes
And voice. That's funny! 😊
😂, this is funny, it won't be this nice and the living will envy the dead.
38:00 Let me barge into your house without knocking and leave the door wide open the entire time. It's not like there's fallout outside.
Walter Mathau looks like a member of DEVO when he first appears! Duty Now for the Future!
Ya thought that was Walter!
This was okay for the 50's. The people today will be totally mad with fear and power hunger. This is really sad that we have come to this. Praying for all.
I was 2 years old when this movie was made. I lived through the greater part of the "Cold War". People are all the same, when, it comes to "the bottom line". Americans are less caring of their fellow people now more than ever before. Less educated about "reality". Continued delusions ( active intentions of mind control) are strongly at work In America. The media and those ultra wealthy, that own and control the media, ARE "The ME Generation". Only caring about themselves, Wealth & Power. Same for politicians and other people "Of Power. My childhood memories are good. At Christmas Time, people were mellower, less stressed and kind to all. It was a time when people felt good. No More. There is far more than Religions at work here.
Religions being more dangerous than any "Atomic Bomb".
In many ways, for me atleast, the 1950s and early 1960s were the Best OF Times.
Even with the Cold War in full force, people were different in a better way.
Peace & Best Regards To All * I have seen this movie before. Thank You
No, the people today will be totally dead within the HR.
What’s praying?
@@christopherwelch136 "PRAYING": A Deluded ingrained belief in silly fairy tail things, people with wings and some guys blowing horns. They live on the "clouds" above us.
Brainwashed from birth to believe in these things... It's not their fault. They don't think rationally for themselves. Peace & Best regards
P.S. Amen! LOL
@@christopherwelch136You're not funny!
Aw, dang; I was waiting to see the radiation-created mutants come for them. 😉😁
Scaring the shit out of people for over 70 years. Thank you black cube.
Black hearted Russians
Go ahead, drop a nasty on the city. It'll stop the propaganda for sure.
The best cold war story in my book is "The Shelter", a Twilight Zone favorite. Solid production there.
Thanks for the schlock.
Patty is still playing The Bad Seed. Oh the humanity!
A young Walter Matthau.
He first shows up at 15:05 during the "2pm" segment where he tests the daughters with a Geiger counter.
@@uncommon_niagara1581 John Daly from What's my Line at 10:50.
Fast paced and intense with the emotions of fear and confusion . A little too much to take all at once !
Had to take a break @ 19:30 when "New York" walked through the door .
That pacifist pinko science teacher waited all of one minute of waiting after the wife heard of her husbands passing before making a move.
gotta hit when the iron is hot after one minute.
Ahhhhhh the 50s and early 60s. America was ON TOP. I miss it. 😒
Director Ralph Nelson, who did Lillies of the Field, and that movie is one of my all time favorites. 🤠👍🙏🏻
Exactly how it will start. No warning but the flash.
First targets aren't those coastal population centers, it's those ICBMs in silos in the middle of the country.
Ginny, soon to be renamed, Baldy.
41:30 walter matthau appears at about 90% in. I did not know that he appeared in another nuclear bomb movie before Fail Safe...
He first shows up at 15:05 during the "2pm" segment where he tests the daughters with a Geiger counter
@@uncommon_niagara1581 He must have been so angry at what happened to america in that atomic war that he went back to school, left the doctor professor behind and became a hawkish consultant and avowed enemy of communism.
Look how thin the average American used to look compared to now
every school had One phat kid, every class had one chubby, and chubby then would be "Fit" now! I graduated 126 lbs at 5'10" could run or swim miles. Now I'm 2 of me, with a new knee.
They smoked...a lot...all the time. I was there, lol.
Men dressed like men, and women dressed like women.
Apparently the producers didn't know about EMP. There would be No power and No radios. 😂
Normal as oatmeal and apple pie.
The acting 😅
Thank God Ginny survived and gave birth to Adriana
Interesting public education film from that time period - enjoyable.
Start out eating silly flakes for breakfast...uh oh, Philadelphia is toast!
well written, but underestimates the severity of the aftermath.
Actually, it deliberately trivializes it, to give people an illusion of safety. Still, the bombe were much weaker then, so survival may have been less doubtful than today.
@@teptimeI believe they said they were hydrogen bombs. On March 1, 1954 the United States tested an H-bomb design on Bikini Atoll that unexpectedly turned out to be the largest U.S. nuclear test ever exploded.
This is what everyday life was like before everybody started smoking dope.
Sort an interesting reminder of even a potential for today.
2:53....jeez Hubby and Kids gotta get the lady's permission to come home at the end of the day?
Lovely children. A hysteric and a savant. Too bad they weren't on a trip to the city that day.
If I'm not mistaken, the half life of fusion fallout is definitely more than a few hours before it would be safe to go out....
I could do without Cackles begging for money before the video starts.
The day the maids off sick!
When a husband was paid well enough to provide a large home for his wife and children.
Bratty still wants the radioactive horsey?
Great Moments In Acting.
Especially Barbara.
Today, most people would be more worried about cellphone reception and the sportsball game being cancelled. 😐
"Your children are being taken care of in school." Yup, those duck and cover drills went a long way.
The duck and cover drills were for schools inside the moderate to minor damage zones.
They would protect against flying glass and falling debris.
@@JChang0114 that was the idea, yes. In the mid '60s we lived in Alexandria, VA. We were 6 miles from the District of Columbia and 4 miles from the Pentagon. They insisted duck and cover would keep us safe, and also keep away from windows. Nonsense. We would have been vaporized before glass or debris flew around. When we moved to California, they were doing duck and cover drills too, but for earthquakes.
Classic timepiece. Perhaps bad acting, but true to the time in was produced in.
Listen to the old song Western Movies. The gunshot that they use are the same gunshots of the opening of that song😜
My elementary school concrete hallway where I held my hands over my head was gonna save me.
Or hiding under my desk
My first observation is the stay at home mom complaining about ironing because the maid is out sick. Almost stopped watching at this point.
It was the era when upper middle class families had maids
@randall8379 my grandmother worked for a living, she also had a maid.
"O, mother, sweet mother."
THE END.
Duck and Cover
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
We Literally trained in school regularly, believe it or not through the 80's I knew of.
Oh, it's the horse? DUHHHHHH.
if this was tv then im glad there wasnt a tv in our house in 54
BOOM!
Doesn't the teen daughter have almost a British accent?
This show demonstrates the state of mind of the time which is probably the origin of the galloping paranoia which is fueling the current social fragmentation in the US.
An era of bad haircuts
I like that the door bell is working after the power is cut .oops !🤪
"The day the maid's off sick". Oh how things have changed. I don't know which was worse, the acting, direction, production or scriptwriting
What unknown country is this ?
USA 1954
The youngest girl is a PIA.
Little big mouth let the cat out of the bag.
Hug the horsey honey. It's safe. Heh, heh, heh. Buh bye.
We're as normal as Oatmeal and Applie Pie... including our Maid and cleaning service. No we're not privileged.
We're going to win! As all her hair falls out.
Free chemotherapy!
I have watched this film before and I think 💭 it really shows the depth of thinking that the USA had towards the nuclear/Cold War era, it might be fictitious but you could see the reality of what could, and most people feared, would happen, one minute everything is post WWII prosperity and hope for the future and the next a blinding flash of light extinguishes the hopes and dreams of potentially the whole world, ok 👌 the acting is a bit OTT in places and hysterical in others, and I personally have to laugh @ 2:25+ when “Barbara” tells mother that she needs some things washed, and the reply from mother of “oh Barbara, today of all days when the MAID is out sick”, she just made me think about how much effort it would take mother, perhaps she would have to miss her lunch date at the country club or shopping with her girlfriends at the mall 🏬, or heaven forbid she might have to miss her bridge party at her besties house, doesn’t she have to much to do without having to wash and dry some things that her daughter needs, never mind mother, they will all have to be cancelled for quite some time.
The Book was more realistic and graphic...
Comedicly naive.
A movie focused on the women! Wow!
Note the opening disclaimers? Recall as 20 years before this film, on the Radio Orson Welles fooled the WORLD with "War of the Worlds" on "live" radio.
Note we Had and USED air raid shelters and alarms everyplace, everyone, all ages, trained regularly in the USA. I grew up ground ZERO same street as McDonald Douglas, next door to Rockwell Int, down the street from Boeng, and just about all aerospace production, with Long Beach Navl Base a decent bike ride away. We had air defence missile batteries within sight on every bit of hi ground. I never cared a "bit" I knew I would never see the flash.
WWII EWO Air Crew Gramps owned him some "Motorola" stocks! Grama's family survived the 33 Long Beach earthquake and most WWII. Other Uncles involved too, one on the mighty Mo at armistice so they told me. Knew others involved with "Chrome Dome, and the Dew Line"
My family's Dr Ethen Allen Norwalk Ca of THIS very films' time (before me) was working on the Manhattan Project prior and still practicing Medicine at 100+? in 2011for me and my family as "I questioned him" face to face about such things.
Lord the "acting was ouch" shooting looters? Spot on! no one owned a geiger counter, everyone had arms, I still keep iodine ready. It's hard to watch the material, the message is spot on.
After all that female histrionics I need to repaint my apartment.
Sad day for the planet when mr. Oppenheimer perfected the nuclear bomb . Some science is good and some is complete evil !☮️❤️
I agree, similar when we squeeze toothpaste out of the tube, can't put it back in, once that genie came out of the bottle we have to live in fear for a war over old men and greed over resources, sometimes senile and can't form a sentence and they have the buttons to launch us into a Nuclear winter where the living will envy the dead. As a kid this bothered me every day until I found Jesus Christ, now the fear of death is taken away but it was ridiculous, especially when at school we would have these drills, duck and cover, wow, those teachers must have thought we were that stupid and naive. Unreal ! ! ! Or did they? Today, my prayer is, I hope I'm at ground zero when it happens. 🤡world we live in these days.
@@dennisexplorer487 well said .❤️
He perfected it with the help of satanic influence. He was an occultist in cahoots with the likes of Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard.
Hindsight is 20/20, especially through rose colored glasses.
If not Oppenheimer the Germans, if not the Germans the Russians...
Today we have walking pathogens entering the country at will.

The older girl and her over acting..😂
Yawwwwwwnnnnnn.
This family makes me root for the godless communists.
Funny!! I don't remember women being so stupid and hysterical!
Ugh! Those old propaganda films were just the worst, weren’t they?
Oh yes in every way
Propaganda, are you saying hydrogen bombs aren't real?
Love them, the men were men and the women wore lovely dresses.
Aaagh! Just awful , total waste of time
