I grew up through the Cold War. Not many people in 1980 thought we would make it this far nor see the collapse of the Soviet Union.

    One day in 1968 in Orange County, Calif., an unannounced test of air raid sirens countywide caused fright and concern in our grade school, and other places in the area. Regular monthly tests on certain Fridays at 10 am would prompt us to get in our balled fetal position under our desks, and we did so this time when the sirens unexpectedly sounded. Our teachers were startled, as were all the kids, because it wasnt the scheduled day or time. Adding to the fears were the sound of jet fighters in full afterburner zooming overhead and heading west ( El Toro MCAS and Los Alamitos NAS were a few miles from us). Our principal came on the PA sounding rattled, saying she wasnt notified of any drill and she was calling the authorities for clarification, but we were still to shelter. Girls in our class started crying and some called out for their moms. Eventually, the all clear siren sounded to our relief. It turned out it was an unannounced Civil Defense drill, but it caused a lot of apprehension throughout the county. Because of complaints from throughout the county, no more surprise warning sirens tests were held.

    I was born in the mid 1960's. I remember air raid drills at school, learning about duck & cover. Soon, later I realized when I learned just how long it takes for the radiation to disperse back down to safe levels and how long it would take for food & water to become safe again. I figured that doing ANYTHING to survive is futile. How much food & water CAN you store up to sustain you? How much medicine, and other necessary supplies can you store up also? Where the hell CAN you go with all that I mentioned, in such a short time you MIGHT have before it's too late? What kind of world would you emerge into after years have passed, assuming that you were able to accumulate enough necessities in an adequate shelter, assuming that you could ever emerge at all? NO, no, just drop one right in my lap. I won't have time to feel a damned thing. The world will be too far gone and totally uninhabitable for anything. No thank you.

      Nah, it really all depends on how far from ground zero you are. For some, it's over instantly. For others, they will die slowly. For others, life will be a little harder, but it will go on. Some might barely be impacted at all. Just because a bunch of nukes go off, it doesn't mean it's the end of life on Earth. Life will definitely go on. Worry more about the end western civilization. And even that will most likely go on after a pause, because that's what we do.

    This is one of my favorite dramatizations. Seriously, you all did such a great job. The audio mixing is perfect, with the rising music and still being able to make out the robotic noises, to seeing the prep of the two boys, it's just awesome. And the usage of the newspapers in the intro, and then the air sirens? Auh. Magic.

    I realised a long time ago that, because of where I lived, I'd likely die during the initial attack - 50 miles from London, a couple of miles from an atomic energy research centre, mainline railway, army barracks in town, four RAF bases within 40 miles... So a goner whichever and whatever. I'd never leave my dog behind - the two of us would go together.

    “There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
    And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
    And frogs in the pools singing at night,
    And wild plum trees in tremulous white,
    Robins will wear their feathery fire
    Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
    And not one will know of the war, not one
    Will care at last when it is done.
    Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
    If mankind perished utterly;
    And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
    Would scarcely know that we were gone.” - Sara Teasdale, 1918, later immortalised by Ray Bradbury, 1950.

      we will see a worsening state, the rapture and afterwards, a peace and prosperity..for
      3 yrs or so..then the worst time that humankind has witnessed, ever..by a lot!

      we are to trust no one..nor lean on our own understanding..so who is left? yup. The Lord. he has a lot to say about current events and what comes next. worth looking into. there is more historical evidence Jesus loved than Julius Caeser..yet no one doubts he was around. if Jesus was real..he has to be who he said he was. no way his claims and stories of events of his life would of survived analysis back then..not for one lousy day! yet..ppl that knew him never denied him, even on pain of death. and..one lil extra note..there is 6,000 years worth of dust on the moon, according to NASA guesstimates. nowhere near 4.5 billion.

This short film makes it feel obvious that we're already there, even though we've switched presidents since this was made. This is goddamn beautiful. I worked for the Pentagon and Nuclear Navy and those 'klaxon' sirens did just that ... arose slowly from everywhere and - even though just a drill - gave us all nightmares that felt and looked like what you did here.
    The absence of dialog, the choice of music, the subtle and deft camera-angles has 100x the impact of any CGI mushroom cloud. And the slow fade to yellow as the sirens wind down (EM pulse wave), with the slow rumble as the ground shock wave warns of the coming air-blast - is both accurate and so dramatically electrifying that it surprises us where no surprise should be possible.
    This is some next-level George Lucas about-to-make-THX1138 stuff.
    It is nothing short of genius. I have never seen so much accomplished with so little.

    You did a great job actually. The depiction of the flash, and quite a long time going by, then a tremor / seismic rumble ,arriving first,building slowly, and then that pressure wave. More accurate than any movie I have ever seen! That is about how it would happen, from about 15 miles away from ground zero and say a half to one megaton of yield ground burst.

    • @billpolewchak7096
      @billpolewchak7096 5 років тому +4

      Once you get out of the actual fireball, the blast wave is slowed by air density to about the speed of sound, so normal flash to bang calculation is a good rule of thumb (like with lightning-number of seconds divided by five = miles) Russian current warheads are about 150kt (largest 800kt-more likely aimed at hardened targets). 5 PSI over pressure (damage to houses, etc) on a 150kt would only out through Jersey City (assuming ground zero is midtown), and bust windows out to NEwark. Based on the flash to boom (1 minute), that would be 12 miles (Clifton/Montclair). That pause was more for dramatic effect.
      However if 800KT, as you were saying, they would be at the edge of window glass breaking (1 PSI).

    There was an elapsed time of 59 seconds from the instant of the detonation flash to when the shock wave hit. Assuming that the shock wave travels at the speed of sound, then: 1,125 ft/sec x 59 sec = 66,375 ft. So 66,375 ft / 5,280 ft/mi = 12.57 miles from the point above which the warhead detonated.

      You're right. For example, for the Bos-Wash Corridor alone, I would estimate a minimum of four MIRV'd missiles aimed at Boston, New York City, Philadephia, and Washington, DC, each missile with ten 225 kt warheads. Each individual warhead would be aimed at 10-mile intervals. That whole 440-mile stretch would be a blasted radioactive ruin.

    Well made for a limited budget.
    Shots of newspapers with headlines showing political turmoil along with the background music slowly building up to the attack was very effective.
    Nice job guys.

    Wow, and Yikes! This is very effective. I commend you for how well you made this -- the music, the complete lack of dialogue, the images, the editing and camerawork. I did notice the lack of other people outdoors, but that's a budget issue and I just use my imagination. One small note: I couldn't read all the news headlines, but maybe that was intentional because I did get the gist. I don't really feel like you were making a political statement with this (pardon me if I'm wrong about that), because really, the world is so complicated with so many hot spots, this scenario crosses any and all political lines. Thank you, and I'll look forward to your next projects.

I can give you several more examples of Predictive Programming if you wish, however, you have to understand that it can always be labelled as fiction until the event comes to pass. Then you can recognise that the precursor to the event is.... You guessed it, Predictive Programming!

      TheHirv What do you think happened in Lebanon?? How do you think the recent ‘forest’ fires happen that burn out cars but leave some trees untouched. And I’m talking about predictive programming of things to come. Do you think all that money spent, research and technology is there for nothing? They are far more sophisticated than they have ever been and DEW’s/EMP’s are the new toys on the block. Sounds like you trust the corrupt governments of the world. Good luck with that one!

    I took a course at RI College in1974 about Nuclear bombs and destruction. At the end of the course year, I entered my final report that, " I had bought a catchers mitt." My professor failed me. He changed his mind when I explained, that all I had learned is that "I want to have myself and my entire family at the impact and I want to be the catcher".. Any Nuclear Launch, from any country, is death or massive suffering on everyone.

      Chances are nice there would not be any warning prior to a first strike.
      Land-based ICBMs take approximately 25 minutes from launch to impact.
      SLBMs can take between 5-8 minutes.
      A concealed nuclear weapon launched from a cargo ship can be as little as 3 minutes..if it doesn't make it to port and detonate.
      No time for civilian populations to get far due to massive traffic clogging primary and secondary routes of travel.
      The government feels it's better to just take a first strike instead of causing panic because that would make things even worse.
      But they're not going to disclose this to the public.
      A high altitude nuclear detonation would result in an EMP and there'd be no warning and hardly any vehicles operable to escape a first strike.
      Sitting duck's we are!!

      I get your point, but don't they detonate quite a distance above the ground? At my age (72) I've had this stuff in the background of my life for one heck of a long time and I'm not as afraid of it as I had been growing up. We lived about 50 miles from NYC at the time and I knew we were toast if anything happened. I'd heard of guys telling girls, "That bomb could drop at any time. You don't want to die a virgin, do you?" I have no idea how much success they had with that line, but it wasn't uncommon. I agree with you, though. I wouldn't want to be around afterward. I would spend my last moments loving my two cats.
