The greatest singer EVER! In the early eighties, I wrote a letter to him, and he sent me a great letter saying that I made his day! He also sent me an autographed picture on it , signed "PEACE!" , John Denver. I will always cherish these
Before he passed; One of the treasured moments I shared with my Dad while in the hospital, & he was more or less aware/lucid...was when I played this song on my ipad for him. He actually managed a smile & it triggered his memory. He was a lifelong fan. I think for me & him, in many ways this song was about his leaving on the Heaven bound jet plane.
A true original...one of my first music loves. My Parents divorced, and when my Mom would go to work I would put on his albums esp "An Evening With John Denver" sit by the speaker, and studied how he sang, studied how harmonies worked. I sang along and learned what a well-written song REALLY was. I like to say John "babysat" me while I was a teenager and he taught me how to sing, which is my true passion and dream in life which I am now chasing...When John died in '97, I was sad, of course; but it didn't TOTALLY, REALLY hit me that he was GONE until this past Summer 2014. When I did, I cried like a baby, truly heartbroken. I like to wonder what kind of music would he be making now? Do you folks know that HE was REJECTED for the "USA for Africa" recording of "We are the World" because MJ and Lionel and Quincy didn't think he wasn't "cool enough", John wasn't "relevant". And it broke John's heart to hear that...but they had Dan Akroyd, Sheila E., Harry Belafonte, Diana Ross, all DIFFERENT kinds of singers there...JOHN DENVER couldn't have "fit in" ??? OH PLEASE. It was their loss for sure !! Stupid People!
This song reminds me of summer camp in Grenville Sc. I was 12 or 13 We were a mix of Catholic and protestant kids from the troubles in Belfast back in 88 who went to the states through the YMCA as a cross community program. it was last night in camp and the American kids went round all our cabins with candles in their hands and sung this song, was amazing. still to this day when I hear it is close my eyes and I'm there. brilliant song.
Met her in Thailand during Vietnam War in '68. Left on a jet plane in '69. Returned in '71. We married in '74. Brought her home to San Diego. Been married 40 years. Bob and Yao
+Robert Eusebio You are the lucky ones, remember always as i am sure you do, my best wishes to you both on this New Year 2106, May it be a great one ; - ) PS love this song, came for it and found your story, perfect !!
I was 6 when I heard this and loved it I sang it all the time. How I'm 13 and forgot about this song entirely until a few weeks ago where I had to move from Florida to New Jersey and basically start a new life. No friends only my mom and sister for family so practically no one. Today randomly when I was going through my photos I came across a picture of the window on the flame where you could see the clouds and the airplanes wing and I thought about this song. It's amazing how 7 years went by and my brain when to this song, it's amazing. (Sorry about my long rant
+kelsea panettiere life will surprise you, I moved out when I was 17 left my sweetheart and started from scratch, now I look back and life was good with me gave a true love and a few lessons but I'm happy afterall
we all lose people. i think in my short life time i have buried about 60 people. as sad as it is. i think when we loose so many in such a short time. i guess i tend to always think the worst. a friend said to me the other day. live for what i have got now and not to worry who i won't have in 20 years.. so live each day and be happy to have this day
1,500k dislikes....must be disgruntled brats...angry that their internets too slow...OH GOD...what has this world come to...We're in Oregon, we almost lost everything from the firestorms surrounding our home...it was horrible. I posted videos of the devastation and our friends home surrounded by fire and 25 friends helping them save their home...I don't understand the dislikes on my videos...and especially dislikes when I play The Lords Prayer on my Vintage Pump Organ or piano...sad...but I guess is what godless does to people.
I love this Song, it's Story is so dramatic and full of pure Love. THAT is what we all should living and fight for.. not for War and Jealousy, Lies and Intriques...
very well put that,s way John wrote his songs about the love he felt for nature and all around him he just put his ear to the wind and magic happened always enjoy Peace to you
God bless you...you're a good dad taking care of your child. Make the most of your time with him when you're home. And make sure he knows how much you love him! I'll pray for both of you!
Never knew about him until I left on a jet plane and I was asked to listen to this song. Sadly I left behind what I consider the most amazing person I have ever met. He was certainly a great singer. RIP John Denver.
I'm a musician who flies all over the World, forgot about this classic. Stunning perfect note for note voice, was in Toronto last week and came across it on a juke box.
The Mama's and Papa's version of this song was playing on the car radio while my wife drove me to Chicago O'Hare airport on December 31st 1969. I was on my way to DaNang for a year. I'm one of the lucky who returned.
Denver left us all on a jet plane. To me this song shows he knew his end would come on a plane. Even if he couldn't quite place the date. Premonition is real my friends.
We grew up listening to John Denver. She cried when she learned about his plane crashing. My mom took us to see at least two concerts. My mom passed away one year ago. For the 11 months that she was on hospice, we played John Denver almost everyday. Now, at least she gets to hear him sing everyday.
That's okay, that's alright. I'd be a legend if I died tonight. You'd remember me, young and pretty. That's the only way I'd want it to be. I thought that's alright, that's okay. I'd be a legend if I died today. And I'd never get old, everybody would know that I was... Legendary.
was it a good show or what I too also seen him in Maryland back in 79 WOW what a show he made you feel right at home. And he was at his best in front of large groups of people, but he enjoyed working with kids he got a real kick out of it Peace to you
My highschool marching band did a show about traveling the world and played the chorus of this song over a speaker while two of our color-guard danced together while the rest of the band marched onto the field. It was lovely.
i can't help but picture arnold schwarzenegger bobbing his head to this song and every time john says "..don't know if i'll be back again" arnold only says the words "I'LL BE BACK"

So kiss me and smile for me Tell me that you'll wait for me Hold me like you'll never let me go Cause leaving on a jet plane Don't know when I'll be back again Oh,baby hate to go
What a beautiful song which I never knew before that the late, great John Denver wrote. Hard to believe that he has been gone 15 years already. I will never forget when he died because my own mother passed away only two weeks later and she was in the hospital during her final illness when he died in the plane crash. Still miss her with all my heart but always think of her now when i hear old John denver songs like this one.
John, I am so sorry you had to deal with bipolar. I personally know how horrible the disease is. I also have stage 4 colorectal cancer. I can state without a doubt that being bipolar is much worse than having cancer.
voteZDLR My wife's name is Valerie. I have put her through hell with the Bipolar and to a much lesser extent with the cancer, even though I have had 5 surgeries and 2 chemo cycles. I feel with bipolar when things go bad it is my fault since I should control it. I don't get that sense with cancer since it is out of my control. Things can good for a while, and one little thing can set the bipolar off. So, I'll take cancer any day over bipolar.
DID YOU KNOW that John Denver died in a plane crash in 1998? I think that might be ironic? He also wrote numerous other hits including "Sunshine on my Shoulder" and "Rocky Mountain High". Denver had a film career as well and starred in a number of light comedy and music related movies. Please check out my version of this classic song.
mosescelica17 He ran out of fuel shortly after take off and didn't have sufficient altitude to recover. At 5000 feet, he would have plenty of time. Really was poor airmanship on his part.
Here's my story of the day probably the best part of my day minus her leaving to go back to France. For the first 2 hours I tried to find her but had no luck of seeing her so both times I went to class, until she started messaging me I was in the gym halfway across the school when she tells me they're heading out to leave I panicked that I wouldn't be able to say goodbye then someone reminded me of the old me of someone who wasn't afraid to break the rules, without thinking I ran across the football field to the back of the school through the gym, go to the wrong cafeteria afraid I missed them until someone said that they were in the bus loop I continued running until I saw her and I said my final farewell with a long hug and a kiss. Then I cried because she left. I miss her so much it still breaks my heart she left
I think this song wouldn't be that ironic if he wouldn't have died on a plane crash... And if I can say it like Don McLean about Buddy Holly.... "the day the music died.."
Penny Mcneela I think the two negatives (not double negatives) made what she was saying confusing. Anyway it is a sad irony. As for the plane crash here's the official NTSB report. Pilot error. It goes into detail. A sad day for music. www.avweb.com/news/safety/183015-1.html
+Jellislee John Denver wrote this song and Peter Paul and Mary made it famous. John Denver wrote the song in 1966. I grew up with this kind of music my parents grew up with. I was a nineties child but at the same time I love this type of music they had back then better than I do today's music. I wish they still had music like this. I really do.
Sadly....John died flying one of his own planes. His music was always music written from the heart filled with nostalgia and delivered with uncommon heartfelt delivery.
The greatest singer EVER! In the early eighties, I wrote a letter to him, and he sent me a great letter saying that I made his day! He also sent me an autographed picture on it , signed "PEACE!" , John Denver. I will always cherish these
The fact that you're listening to him, means his talent isn't lost and hopefully won't be for a very long time.
My grandfather was a pilot and we played this at his funeral. He loved John Denver.

Aww
I"m really sorry, for your lose ! I, lost my grandfather, when i, almost 4 years old

JOHN DENVER is one of the greatest american artists of last century....we missed him too much.....
I'm a 15 year girl in Southern California...yet there's nothing that touches me more than John Denver's music. It's truly universal.
Didn't those 7 years fly by
John Denver brilliant singer and such gentle man RIP John

To me this is a sad song. There's no guarantees that someone will come back again. That's the cold truth.
I think so too
we all lose people. i think in my short life time i have buried about 60 people. as sad as it is. i think when we loose so many in such a short time. i guess i tend to always think the worst. a friend said to me the other day. live for what i have got now and not to worry who i won't have in 20 years.. so live each day and be happy to have this day

sort187 Truth.
Rip your lovely daddy
Listening to this on this day April 29th 2023 at 9.35pm. Missing my wife 😊
I feel the world would be a more beautiful place if Mr Denver was still with us...
almost 1000 dislikes is unfair for John Denver. He was one of a kind. Maybe that's why..
1,500k dislikes....must be disgruntled brats...angry that their internets too slow...OH GOD...what has this world come to...We're in Oregon, we almost lost everything from the firestorms surrounding our home...it was horrible.

John Denver is a god. Agree? You know what to do.
He wrote it, he sang it first, he sang it best.
My mom loved this song before she pass away :')
That man had perfect pitch... what a great singer.
That's funny you say that because my cat loves this song. That's how awesome his voice is.
His voice heals.
The Mama's and Papa's version of this song was playing on the car radio while my wife drove me to Chicago O'Hare airport on December 31st 1969. I was on my way to DaNang for a year. I'm one of the lucky who returned.
I am young millennial and never been fan of music of today's generation. this music for me is real soul
Couldn't be happier with this!
I can spamx!
Listening to this in the Covid times..with hopes of a great sunshine one more time..if yes, then do press like..
Denver left us all on a jet plane. To me this song shows he knew his end would come on a plane. Even if he couldn't quite place the date. Premonition is real my friends.
I miss this guy alot, I bet evryone in Heaven is hearing his music!!!
If only he had taken a country road instead of leaving on a jet plane, maybe he would still be with us 😭😞💔
It was a Prop.
Leaving on a jet plane earlier version of John Denver
Maren Denison yes god describtion hope you are not too sad.....but you are right.
Maren Denison yes. Because no one dies in car accidents...
I lost a good friend 2 years ago in a stupid homemade plane, he burned to death. Tried to tell him, so stubborn.
Probably one of my all time favorite songs!!!!
Wow John Denver is like the Bob Ross of the music world. I love just how genuinely nice and pleasant he is.
We grew up listening to John Denver. She cried when she learned about his plane crashing. My mom took us to see at least two concerts. My mom passed away one year ago. For the 11 months that she was on hospice, we played John Denver almost everyday. Now, at least she gets to hear him sing everyday.
prophetic words. indeed.
Brings back a lot of good memories. Almost make me wish I could go back to that time.
The Old Generations ARE THE REALLY GOLDEN AND THE BEST GENERATIONS EVER..
That's okay, that's alright.
I'd be a legend if I died tonight.
You'd remember me, young and pretty.
That's the only way I'd want it to be.
I thought that's alright, that's okay.
I'd be a legend if I died today.
And I'd never get old, everybody would know that I was...
Legendary.
John Denver didn't have to die way too soon to be a legend that's why everyone was devastated when he did.
I love this song and I had luck to see him in Germany^^
was it a good show or what I too also seen him in Maryland back in 79 WOW what a show he made you feel right at home. And he was at his best in front of large groups of people, but he enjoyed working with kids he got a real kick out of it Peace to you
im to young but i love this song too (2004)
My highschool marching band did a show about traveling the world and played the chorus of this song over a speaker while two of our color-guard danced together while the rest of the band marched onto the field.
It was lovely.

I spent over 10 yrs in a strict Islamic country and John Denver's songs and words were one of the things that kept the important things in life safe and fresh in my mind, until I could get out of the damn place.
He was just amazing!!!!!!
0ne of the worlds great singer j0hny Denver,thats y i named my s0n"Denver"
He is engrained in my childhood memories....whether u liked his music or not...I will love his melodies until the day I die.
me too, i am a bit older but i know this song for my dad's... this world would be more wonderful if today's music would be like this one.
My dad left to go be in Vietnam and sang this song to my mom. She went to see him while he was there and they wouldn't let her leave to come home after her stay. They said she was to far along with me and I was born in Germany because of it. So she got to sing it to him before she left with me to come back to Ohio. It is a tear jerker to me.
It might interest you to learn that the mild-mannered, bespectacled Mr. Denver served in Vietnam himself too, voluntarily, as an expert sniper.
Domingo Santillana That is cool, I didn't know that. Thanks.
I remember this song when my dad went to Vietnam, too. Love this song.
***** Seems you're right.
offroad03able my uncle sang Maggie May to my aunt Donna one year , still the most romantic thing I’ve seen a man do.

its an old song .. the words are beautiful ... "im leaving" ... brings a lump to my throat he left and can never come back .. but hey ho thats life ... We move on 💖💖
All my bags are packed
I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin'
It's early morn
The taxi's waitin'
He's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome
I could die
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Ev'ry place I go, I'll think of you
Ev'ry song I sing, I'll sing for you
When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time
Let me kiss you
Then close your eyes
I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times, I won't have to say
Oh, kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
But, I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh,baby hate to go

What a beautiful song which I never knew before that the late, great John Denver wrote. Hard to believe that he has been gone 15 years already. Love this song my brother Mick used to sing it all the time and was played at his funeral a class song x

DID YOU KNOW that John Denver died in a plane crash in 1998? I think that might be ironic? He also wrote numerous other hits including "Sunshine on my Shoulder" and "Rocky Mountain High". Denver had a film career as well and starred in a number of light comedy and music related movies.
Please check out my version of this classic song.
guess he really left on a jet plane
oddly poetic coincidence
mosescelica17 He ran out of fuel shortly after take off and didn't have sufficient altitude to recover. At 5000 feet, he would have plenty of time. Really was poor airmanship on his part.
Jim DeCamp not where the fuel tank switch was located. it was difficult to reach hence why the plane went out of control.
john denver ask someone to kill him.....he want to go in the moon and thats because of his ironic....drugs,,,
Love this song. This song reminds me of Chuck! Miss that show so much.
This song sure pulls on the heart strings, thanks John.

+Joshua the Scotsman holy shit

+Joshua the Scotsman but it wasn't a jet plane.

This song brings tears to eyes because the thought he left us on the plane comes to the mind.

My all time favorite song. His work was truly inspiring and simply great.
I'm living with u man 😔

I traveled and lived overseas as a teen. This was one of my favorite songs because it was true to my heart.
240p? Still better than Justin Bieber in 4K HD.
I think this song wouldn't be that ironic if he wouldn't have died on a plane crash...
And if I can say it like Don McLean about Buddy Holly.... "the day the music died.."
Jellislee John Denver did die in his plane.. :(
Penny Mcneela yes I know...I wrote it... ;) but thanks... :)
Penny Mcneela I think the two negatives (not double negatives) made what she was saying confusing. Anyway it is a sad irony. As for the plane crash here's the official NTSB report. Pilot error. It goes into detail. A sad day for music.

+Professor B. Yeah...the Earth lost ones of its most eloquent and talented voices that day. But we at least had him for awhile, neh?
+Jellislee John Denver wrote this song and Peter Paul and Mary made it famous. John Denver wrote the song in 1966. I grew up with this kind of music my parents grew up with. I was a nineties child but at the same time I love this type of music they had back then better than I do today's music. I wish they still had music like this. I really do.
Sadly....John died flying one of his own planes. His music was always music written from the heart filled with nostalgia and delivered with uncommon heartfelt delivery.
the imperfection of this version is perfection, my favorite version
Pray for flight mh17 :')
tragic. senseless. pray for mh370 too, no closure for family members.
The lyrics are profound.
