Just stumbled on this.. 5 yrs later. Asheville if you are liberal as hell, Charlotte for city life. I was lucky, my grandparents had a large farm in Warne, on the Ga line... Loved every minute spent there. I was free labor, spent 3 weeks every summer there, two of em bailing hay and the rest traipsing through the mountains and fishing.... Franklin is where I'm gonna retire, not too far from Sylva where my dad is buried... My heart is in them hills!
My wife and I live down here in coastal Va, but like you we used to live in Spruce Pine. We absolutely loved that little town. We had a little art and local craft gallery right next door to the famous "Gladys's Shoe store". She was a great fun neighbor and really had a wonderful dry sense of humor. I must say I'm glad she liked us. We knew so many wonderful, fun and slightly crazy people there. (Crazy in a good way). We were affiliated with the Penland school and I worked there in the mid 90's. We're seriously thinking in the next couple years with retirement fast approaching of heading back to the mountains. My wife loves Roan Mt, and I'm ready for a slower pace and the clear water and air. Enjoyed you tutorial. Be well.
Thank you. I found this very helpful. We are moving to NC next summer and the suggestion on research you have here will help determine where we might relocate
Great Video Brother, just moved from Texas after hurricane harvey cleaned our clock. Livin 30 miles south of Raleigh temporarily with some friends... Outstanding that you mention City Data. God Bless you.
Great video Tony. I'm from the U.K. and have travelled all over the US except most of the east coast. I'm planning another trip next year and NC is top of my list along with some road trips up and down the coast. I'm hoping to relocate to the US one day. I love the people and lifestyle. All the best from the U.K.
Be sure to get into the mountains John. It's the prettiest portion of the state. The coast is great too - but it's a long state. You'll have to do some serious driving to experience both regions. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey Tony thanks for the reply. I like the mountains best and have spent some time in the Rockies and Appalachia is high on my list for next time. I'll be using most of 90 day visa so will have time to check a lot of places out. I prefer small towns and nature so any recommendations you have would be appreciated.
Great video. I'm from Ellenboro (off US-74 in Rutherford County) but have lived in Forest City, Maggie Valley, Cullowhee (WCU '09) and Dillsboro. I can say that service industry is big in the southwestern part of the state west of Shelby unless you're willing to commute to Greenville/Spartanburg or Charlotte. If you really want peace and quiet, Jackson county is the place to be.
Hi, I lived a decade ago in the areas he is talking about. He tells the truth: beautiful place, and the sweetest people! Served my county over in Ft Bragg, relatives out in the foothills. My preference is on the western side of NC. No place in the country quite like it there in Western NC! Moving back soon as I find a driver for my truck rental.
If you like traffic, congestion and hoardes of people come to Charlotte. If you need a job come to Charlotte. I've lived just outside most of my life. It's cool that in 3 hours or less you can be in the mountains or walking the beach. If you are nearing the end of a career and looking for adventure & beauty and seeking a certain non-urban lifestyle, steer clear. The NC mountains and coast are 2 of the best spots on the planet.
I live in Portland Oregon but I'm originally from the east coast. I would say Seattle and Portland are two of the most beautiful cities in America. In Portland, you're only an hour from the beach and Oregon beaches are gorgeous (but cold) and then you're less than an hour from the cascade mountains which reach heights of over 14,000 feet. However it's expensive to live here and I definitely miss home. Plus it does rain a lot which doesn't bother me too much because it makes everything so green but I miss having snow regularly. Idk why though but it just doesn't feel like home. Can't wait to move back. Definitely looking into Charlotte. Which is better though, Charlotte or Atlanta?
Trill Clinton Steer totally clear of Atlanta. If I could do it all over again, I'd probably be on the west coast and possibly Oregon. East coast of NC would be a toss up as well. 2 awesome places on the planet.
Thanks so much for this awesome vid on NC! It was so informative and just a great breakdown of info on the state areas of NC and great recommendation on the city data site. We are looking to move out of Florida and more than likely to NC because the homeschool laws seem pretty comparable to FL and we just love the Carolinas mountain range. So thanks again! Great JoB!!
Thanks brother. There have been 4 families I know of that have moved to Burke County after watching some of my videos. That's crazy to me, but kind of cool. We live in a nice part of NC. Blessed to be here!
Move to NC! Yes, absolutely! Consider yourself lucky to be able to do so. I have lived and served my country in NC multiple times. The beaches are the best: still natural. But my heart belongs to the Foothills area, hands down. There are good & bad people everywhere, but in Western NC, you will see mostly the good. The scenery is awesome, cost of living fabulous. There is a unique slice of American culture there that will soothe your soul & bless your heart! The hard part might be employment. That is changing though. Jobs are defiantly improving. And this is a place that one must have reliable transportation too. Don't miss your chance to live among and know these sweet people!
Jeezus. That was the exact opposite of what I experienced in Western NC. All I saw was a bunch of methheads running around, looking for something to steal. I actually saw one say "Praise the Lord" after stabbing a tourist and running off into the woods. (Swannanoa)
I live in Charlotte NC and it's the best place ever. Best state in my Opinion! It's got beautiful mountains and beaches. Glad to call it my home state 💖
This is another one of your videos that I really enjoyed. I live in Lenoir and love it here. I'm what you might call a military brat and a missionary kid. That being said, I've lived in France, Germany, Massachusetts, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Colorado, Washington State, and California. As far as natural beauty, I would only say that the Cascade mountains in Washington state can compare with the natural beauty found here. That is when the sun comes out, which it rarely does there. I also prefer the warmer climate that Lenoir, NC offers. I also prefer the conservative ideas and a higher percentage of God fearing people this region offers. I grew tired of the hustle and bustle of city life which has become only a distant memory since living here. The people are friendly, laid back, and polite as a whole. I love the southern hospitality, the beautiful lakes, the rolling hills, the wildlife, and this region's largest variation of plant life found anywhere in North America. Last but not least, I love living in an area where finding a good, gospel teaching church is not difficult.
Thx Tony. We are heading out for a state tour at the end of the month coming from Colorado. Trying to weigh pros and cons. Your video was one of the best from a local /native perspective.
I love your videos! I'm researching a move up to NC from South Fl. Not sure on the area just yet. Visited Huntersville last year and loved it. Probably looking for somewhere that isn't too mountainous but not completely flat either.
thank you for your input. we are looking into the holly springs area. we went back in June for the first time and we absolutely loved it. in comparison to San bernardino ca nc has more to offer a young family as far as activities and schools.
I love NC. Attended a month long metalsmithing session at Penland school up there near Spruce Pine, back in 1985, and have made it a point to get back to that area every chance I get. Last time I was there, played drums in the Asheville drum circle downtown. Also made it out to the coast, but not so impressive. Used to the west coast, I guess. The long muggy slope to the sea west of Wilmington began smelling like overflowing septic tanks 30 miles from the beach.
+William Medford I grew up about 5 miles from the Penland School. I've been to the drum circle in Asheville several times too. You've had some good experiences in NC. Bet you learned a lot at Penland - cool hippie art central!
I’ve lived southwest of Asheboro all my life, but lately I really want to move to Asheville because I’m thinking of going to UNC Asheville when I go to college, and not to mention Asheville is just a beautiful place in general so I recommend going to Asheville if you’re moving to North Carolina.
I thank you for a great video describing a great state. I am in the early stages of planning a move in a few yrs. your insight has helped. I have spent my whole life in the armpit of America with rude nasty arrogant people. Much more research to do.
Tony Lee Glenn There are many people leaving Florida. I’m in the process of moving to Waxhaw, NC near the South Carolina border. I love the landscape and it’s beautiful there. My cousins live there and they have a farm with chickens, cows, goats😊.
Do you know where Shut-In Creek Rd. is on the Cherokee/ Maggie Valley line? There is a beautiful spot where the water runs through over the rocks. I picked up many rocks from this area. When we go back on July 2nd, we are stopping by there on our way up to our motel in Maggie Valley. I can't wait!! Guess what? I found a (crisp) 5.00 bill folded in half on the entrance of Soco Gap just outside of the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway! Can you believe that?
Fantastic video, Tony! I'm a native of the Morganton area, and I can tell you really know the state well. I no longer live in NC (I relocated to Kansas for my career) but I sure miss my home state. One piece of advice I would give to anyone looking to move here: try to have a job lined up before you come. The job market is pretty brutal in a lot of the smaller towns.
I live in Charlotte NC the biggest population of NC. I go to the city area about 3 times a week. The Panthers stadium is there and I met Cam Newton. There's not much pollution which is good. The thing is there's the Ghoul of Charlotte which is where many ppl get murdered or shot but it happens almost everywhere. Another good thing about Charlotte it's only about half an hour way from Carowinds, a really fun theme park that my family and I go to every weekend in the summer. Wilmington is also a great to live because u are pretty close to the beach. So I think Wilmington or Charlotte!! Hope this was helpful to anyone!!
kcozgrove if you need help looking for a home, my girlfriend is a real estate agent here in Charlotte. I can share her contact information or vise versa if you are interested. I’ve lived here for 2 years and her being a local helped me learn the area a lot faster.
I lived in Wilmington, NC for 5 years (2009-2014), it was ok, perfect size city (not too small or too big), cool up and coming downtown area, beautiful parks and green spaces, but as a single guy in his early 30's, I think Wilmington is more suited for retirees because of the nature of it's low paying job market and high housing prices, and also I felt too isolated from the rest of the state. In 2014, I moved to Orlando, been here for 2 years and I HATE IT!!! Horrible traffic all day!!! Rude people!! Crazy drivers!!!! and more of the low pay/high housing costs problem. What I miss about NC: friendly people, hyper-political environment (in Florida everybody just wants to go to Disney or the beach, not much of an intellectual scene here) pork bbq, lower grocery costs/more competition, (Florida is run by King Publix and Queen Wal-Mart). In conclusion, I hope to move to the Triad area in 2017, in my internet research, I like the central location (relative to the rest of the state), low cost of living/decent paying jobs, low traffic congestion (not tolled to death like Orlando), plenty of cheap things to do, lots of museums and universities and a good intellectual scene.
The Conservative Pelican Hey! Currently live in Miami and I agree with everything you said about Orlando (Miami a bit crazier than Orlando but pretty much about the same type of people/traffic)...did you move back to NC? I'm planning to move as well....was thinking of California but with the state taxes being so high it's a downfall for me :(...I really like the hot weather (not as hot as Miami though!). Would love to live somewhere where i can go hiking but go to the beach as well! And I guess if I move to NC I might accustome to the weather..? Any advice/suggestions?
Wow, what a fantastic geographic breakdown of NC! Really appreciate this. I'll be visiting Charlotte next week for Thanksgiving for the first time ever. Will see first hand how that area is . Originally from LA and the way things are going here, i'm more and more considering to jump ship before it all sinks. Would be keen to network with others in the Charlotte area, 20-30s age group .
Thank you for the link. Thats fantastic ! The wife and i are looking for warmer weather. I for one cant take the winters here in upstate NY anymore. Beautiful up here but between the winter, political and economical environment, its just to much.
I live in Maine. Born and raised. But I have some southern roots in NC, SC, and AL. I am looking to buy or build a forever home and I am just SO torn on where I want to be. I LOVE my state of Maine. The nature is just beautiful, life is slow paced and calm (at least where I live), and I love that I get the full effect of all four seasons. Winter and Fall being my favorite. But when I visit the South to see family I am just in love. I can breathe better (my year round allergies are bad in Maine), the people are wonderful, cost of living is CHEAP, and Eastern NC (my favorite part of NC and where Im considering living) reminds me so much of Maine, but you can tell its different. I grew up on a farm and live in an agricultural part of Maine, and I just love the agriculture in NC too. They just take it to the next level and its SO beautiful. Im doing my research and Im looking into smaller rural towns in Eastern NC. Im looking for towns similar to my current town. Its smaller, everyone has their privacy and space, but neighbors are still there and are nice. I want to be far enough out the city where I dont have to deal with the city life, but I dont want to be too far out where its a long haul to get groceries. (Currently I'm about 15-20 minutes away from the closest city). Im sorry this is lengthy, but I am just SO TORN!!
I've always wanted to visit Maine. I live in NC. Nice towns are Washington, Nc, Wilson, NC. New Bern is nice but geared to tourists. It is hard to make a living unless you are in the medical field, it seems.
I've lived in Charlotte for 40 years. I'm at the outer edge of it with Matthews, about 50 feet into my backyard and over the creek. We were annexed into Charlotte 39 years ago. North Carolina allows cities to annex unincorporated areas when they have 2 persons per acre. I liked the area when I cam here. It was rural. Now It's all developed around me with all the roads expanded and expanded with apartments everywhere even a Super Walmart a mile away. I've grown to hate it. But I do have another home in Emerald Isle. We rented the hose out every summer and paid all expenses including renovations and upgrades, the mortgage and taxes from the renters. We're about 10 miles from Camp Lejeune and sometimes it's noisy but we love the beach and it's worthwhile. We go there during the non-summer months. The real difference for me is the culture. Charlotte is loaded with Liberals who spend like there is no tomorrow. Carteret County is 80% Republican. We have very little debt, it's clean and virtually no crime. I can't wait to finally leave Charlotte.
Great video. I too, live in Burke County (Morganton) and work in Hickory. I was raised in-between Marion & Spruce Pine. You explained our great state, the same way I would. We have the mountains on one side and the coast in the other. My pick out of the entire state to live would be the "High Country" (anywhere from Blowing Rock, Boone & Banner Elk). Harsh winters and pricey housing but beautiful country there in Watauga & Avery Counties.
I have a motto: don't go into any place, unless you want to marry into their culture. Don't be an outsider agent for the very things you left behind. Before moving to any place, research its culture, its people, their attitudes to one another and towards the life. Before moving out from your place, get to know some folks from your chosen destination, make some friends with them, invite them to your house here, go to their house there. See whether you can financially make it there or not. Don't be necessarily optimistic nor pessimistic about that place & its people. I think these are some good rules to follow about moving to any place.
With all the New Yawkers going there make "some friends with them invite them to your house" you must be thinking of a time along time ago, this country is changing I would just mind my business these days.
Highly recommend hitting if you live or passing through Myra's Ice Cream in Valdese, North Carolina. Cutest little ice cream shop with big dash of nostalgia.
Very informative video! You touched on all of the important things to consider when moving, my husband and I are planning on relocating to NC next year, from TX, we are originally from NY and CA, big cities and it seems like Charlotte and Raleigh will offer a mix of the diversity and culture we are seeking. We are visiting this coming summer and I'm so excited!
My mom's from Bladen county. Her side of the family are spread out between Wilmington and fayetteville. I dont see much change in that area except many of the dirt roads are now paved. My uncle lived all over southeastern NC , so I got to see a lot if it growing up. I love the peaceful farms and nice folks around there . I love the whole state except the big cities.I personally would like to live in the piedmont where I can just see mountains on the horizon, hear crickets every night, and not have too many nieghbors, and have a good church fairly close. I enjoyed your post, but I wouldnt be trying to get more people to come there. They did that in Florida, and in 40 years my hometown grew × 4. Everythings so different it doesnt feel like home anymore.
+Sonnie's Garden Hey Sonnie -- I made the move just a few years ago and would love to answer any questions you might have about moving to Charlotte (is that where you're coming?) As a real estate agent, I have a great feel for the market.
Well, thank you, Tony Lee! I should have been there last week, but I am a disabled vet & the driver I needed for my moving truck suddenly needs to stand by here in Florida for a relative with a serious medical situation. So, hunting a new driver, then after the holidays, "Plan B". Hey, we hear down here about the hard work your leaders are doing to bring back jobs to Morganton. Way 2 Go! You have a joyous Christmas holiday and I will be up there soon. Lunch at my fav BBQ place 1st thing...lol. Bye!
I moved to Stokes Co. NC from Los Angeles California in 96. One of the best things I ever did. I LOVE the county, and I pray we never get "Citified" When I hear my liberal Cali friends and family talk politics; I praise the Lord I'm not breathing that pollution.....
it has always been my dream to be in cali or NYC maybe one day , i wouldnt say NC is bad but its not like NYC or CALI at all , the only thing here we also do get hit by hurracanes and tornadoes but other then that i do like the weather thou
i'm honestly thinking of applying for jobs in the western north carolina area, coming from the bay area, and i'm tired of, "breathing the pollution" lol. was born and raised in the bay area, and i've had enough of the expensive living and liberal attitude around here. wish me luck that i can find employment in that area! lol.
being a californian, let me tell you that it's overrated. maybe it's just that i'm tired of california, but unless you're ultra liberal and can afford to spend a lot of money on housing, you'll probably hate it.
yeah I know I also live in North Carolina, in Elizabeth city and I love it, close to the beach, and VA, I have moved away to KY, and a few other states, But I always came to NC where I was born and raised. I am a forever Carolinian.
I'm in Parkton, NC. It's close to Fayetteville, NC, and Lumberton, NC, and S.C. I love it around here :) I love the different cultures and their accents and good jobs near by. The coast isn't far either.
North Carolina, in my opinion, is THE best place in America. NC offers anything you could want in a home state. From urban areas, to pristine beaches, to gorgeous mountain scenery and hiking, North Carolina has it all.
Yea def...i moved from fl west palm to asheville and now i bought my first home in maggie valley and god willing im never leaving this area....but i do love gatlinburg (except its getting to crazy out there)
I'm looking forward to visiting first week of November. Going to a dental lab conference in Charlotte. Going to check out some real estate too! I'm from Massachusetts and looking for a nice change! Thank you for all your info. It is quite helpful. I'm going to spend three days in Charlotte and 3 days in Raleigh! I'm excited about my trip!
+Barbara Jansen Sure wish you could get up toward the mountains too Barbara - that's my favorite, but the urban areas are where the action is - particularly for jobs. A dental lab person could do quite well in Asheville though - nice place. TLG
I moved to the Lake Norman area in 2002 from Pennsylvania, at first I loved it but around 2006 smart phones came In our lives. The population exploded and with that the traffic became unbearable and every one is looking down at their phones and not on the roads. The NC people that are not still sore over the civil war were very nice but the rude transplants moved in wanting to bring their B/S with them. I still will say NC is beautiful and I miss it except for the traffic. The weather is better but I believe I get more time out doors in the north, yes we are in crap weather four months a year but the spring, summer and fall are beautiful. The summers in NC are to hot and you still get winter but I’m sure on average the weather statistics are better but for me I was forced indoors more in NC. I moved back to the Pa mountains in 2017. No place is perfect but now when I get on the roads I don’t have all the traffic although people are still stupid with their smart phones it just a lot less of them. If I could’ve found land in the NC mountains that would’ve been ideal but I owned a place in PA so it was easier to return. So to all you NC natives I feel your pain with all the Yanks moving down and screwing up your lives in a beautiful state but now you have one less to deal with although my two children call the south their home now and they stayed.
rl avery- what part of north carolina did you live in and where in pennsylvania are you at now? i ask because i found your weather insights interesting.
@@gailzahran1315 ... Thanks Gail ! People are Friendly for the most part. I have seen so many People from up North or from California come out and enjoy themselves (with the money that they made from selling their Homes). But after the Money runs out from the former Home, You begin to realize how expensive it is ( Raleigh, Charlotte, Asheville).. Google and see Yourself (currently in my area, (Raleigh) a decent 1br is about 1,300/mo. anything under is very old and/or debatable). So while Everyone is Welcome, One will need to understand that the wages are going to be lower, and your rents are going to seem High. The Good thing about the state is that to the Western part, You have the Mountains. To the East, the Ocean.. But like Everywhere, if the view is Pretty, You are going to Pay for it... So Good Luck in your Choice, and too all , Wishing Happiness !
Thanks for your video Tony, I think you do a great service for your state and its people. I am in Miami florida, originally from Colombia, middle age married guy. I am a Registered Nurse talking with an agency to do some Home health in either High Point, Durham, Winston Salem and Greensboro. Honestly I am suffering from chronic Miami fatigue, severely. Horrendous traffic, very expensive, rude people, and suffocating-lly over populated. If you could give me some pointers about those towns I would greatly appreciated. Thank you.
+Al Vlz We have a huge nursing shortage in Asheville at Mission Health (I work there). So many people have been moving to Asheville because it's made over a dozen "Top 10 Places to Live In America" lists. They come and have healthcare needs. Send me an email so we can discuss opportunities. Winston and Greensboro, etc. are great places - but Asheville is really something kind of magical. Here's the email: tonyleeglenn@gmail.com
Why are there so many negative comments? I live with my wife Rosie in Ipswich in Suffolk. England, UK. We were looking to move to North Carolina to retire, but the comments have put us off. It seems like some people don't want outsiders to move there. We were going to move there because the locals seemed to be so friendly on other websites???????
North Carolina came across to us as a very friendly place, but it seems too many people are moving in from other places and I can understand that (I live on a very crowded island), but North Carolina is huge and the people who live there should realise what they have. Lots of space. Me and my wife just want a tiny bit of it. We will pay our way and contribute to the American economy. Thank You for answering.
Because there are a lot of people who like to troll my channel and stir mess up. You don't have to worry about moving to NC. You'll love it. My favorite region is the foothills where I live now, near Morganton & Hickory. You're picking one of the best states in America.
@@tonyleeglenn thank you...rude ppl everywhere....feel like asking any of these trolls if me, my wife, dog and cat can rent an extra room....i'm from wisconsin by the way.
I lived in Morganton area for 18 years have moved up north to Minnesota about 7 years ago but can't stand the cold any more planning to move back to north carolina in the next few years.
I live in Dundonald Ayrshire Scotland but was born in Lenoir, my dad is from there my mom is from Scotland. I did work in Valdese Weavers and Ellis Hoisery in Hickory from1996 to 2004 then moved bck to Scotland. My brother is near Blowing Rock.
Thanks for commenting. Very cool that you used to be around the Catawba Valley area, but now in Scotland. I love Scotland, and hope to get back over there some day soon.
NC is great. I have lived here most of my life. However I will be moving to WA at the end of the year. Raleigh has been great to me but I need a new slate.
I'm from NC and do real estate referrals. NC is a pretty good state. Great jobs, schools, colleges and beach and mountains. Very friendly people and great bbq
Thanks for the comment. It is the people, geography and weather that really make NC a great place to live. Lots of other reasons to love the state too - but hard to beat it for livability and overall nice folks to call neighbors (always a stray exception).
I grew up in eastern N.C. and now live in Seattle. I don't miss the humidity or the political climate but I do miss the friendliness of the people. It's a beautiful state but it's more beautiful at the two extreme ends of the state (mountains and coast). I like the West (U.S.) in that it's more spread out, less humid and less conservative and the outdoor life (in the PNW) is fantastic. I see ocean and mountains without going anywhere. The mountains are much younger and therefore more imposing here. I personally wouldn't like to live in Charlotte but would live in Asheville, Winston-Salem or in the Research Triangle (Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh). I think where to move in N.C. depends on what you are looking for particularly job-wise. Much of the state is either rural or composed of small towns. Also, a lot of the coast isn't easily accessible (Outer Banks) but much is easily accessible. There's not a lot of big cities there however. Really, there's no "big" cities anywhere in N.C. other than perhaps Charlotte. I think the summer weather is awesome in Asheville and Boone. The people really are great in N.C. however if you move to a small town and aren't conservative or religious it may take a while for people to "warm up" to you :) They will eventually however. Let me be clear, they will be friendly and welcoming from the very start. It may just take a little while before they truly consider you to be one of them. If I were to move somewhere other than Seattle it would be to somewhere else in the West or to N.C. If to N.C. I would move to Asheville most likely. Regarding crime, I think it depends more on neighborhood than the whole city. There is going to be a part of town with more crime in it than other parts of town. Just don't live in that part of town and you will be fine :) That last piece of advice applies to most places and not just to N.C.
It's really hard to beat the scenery in the Northwest. However you're def right about how people are not as friendly. And there's not as many cooler smaller towns and stuff. My favorite place in the Northwest is Bend, Oregon though. It's an amazing place.
Smaller city, closer to the coast. I just don't particularly care for Charlotte. This whole subject matter is subjective though (of course). :) The middle of the state just doesn't have as much to offer as the mountains or the coast. The best climate is probably either in the mountains on in the foothills. Boone would actually be my favorite city but Asheville has more to offer (larger).
Raleigh has a lot of big city features, but has far lower crime than Charlotte. Raleigh is also a good bit closer to the coast, and the beach. That said, Raleigh is very political, and is also a college town. So, you still get a TON of partying college students, and you are kneckdeep in political BS 24/7.
A lot of companies are coming into NC. Most are going into adjacent cities surrounding Research Triangle Park (RTP) in North Carolina. Raleigh, Apex, Cary, Sanford, Durham, Wake Forest, Morrisville, and Pittsboro are on fire for business development.
Jennings Putnam you are so right about that! I love North Carolina as much as I love Virginia (I live in Virginia). I am so glad my family moved to Virginia years ago, yall. I don't miss the Nawth at all because Southerners are friendlier.
I think this guy is biased towards NC! ;-) Should we really listen to a guy this biased? In this case, I think yes! Sound advice, common sense answers and he's a great representative for his state. Great job Tony.
Marble League Virginia and North Carolina are the best places to live on the planet. I love living in Virginia. And I loved visiting North Carolina, I must do so again soon.
I would advise staying away from the Greenville/Kinston NC area. Greenville is a college town, but is quite a violent place given the population size, and area. Kinston is an old, failing Tobacco town. Agriculture/Tobacco used to be huge in Kinston, but with the failing of the tobacco industry, and the massive shift to large, corporate farms, Kinston has been ravaged in recent years with poverty, drugs, and even small-town gang activity. The cost of homes is dirt cheap in Kinston. But, it's not a place you'd want to live! As for the coastal NC region, Wilmington is quite nice, (although it's known as the opium capital of NC due to opiate abuse). Jacksonville is a booming, (literally) military town. Unless you enjoy having your windows rattle due to the bombing practice aboard Camp Lejeune, and struggling to find stable work that isn't retail/restaurant/car sales/table dancing, Jacksonville isn't for you! Recreation is also very limited in eastern NC - with the exception of Wilmington.
I agree...I was born and raised in Kinston. Kinston IS getting better with the down town area though. there are a few good people here who are trying to revitalize the area with respect to the food industry. we have one of the only 4 star restaurants in the state. Chef and the Farmer and Mother Earth Brewery are really our two highlights. but I agree that it's still a few years away from being even a safe place to live.
Definitely agree with you about Jacksonville if it's not restaurant or retail there's not Many jobs here also lived in Greenville and most of that town is set just like Jacksonville because of everything is set around ECU with the same type of jobs as pretty much serving the university in the hospital and the violent crime and property crime is ridiculous
I want to visit North Carolina. I love Virginia so I am not moving, but North Carolina is an excellent place to visit. I love the Blue Ridge Mountains and OBX.
Just stumbled on this.. 5 yrs later.

One of the best videos to cover the whole state of NC! Great job
Really appreciate your comment!
Be well.
Thanks Tony for your help. You are the coolest!
Thanks so much Tony! Folks like you restore my faith in humanity ;o) and make life easier for the rest of us.
+Vicki Garcia What a sweet comment. You've totally made my week! Thanks Vicki.
+Vicki Garcia Just so you know - I'm also Mission Heart News - again thanks! Tony
Cool to have a Texan in NC. You should fit in just fine here. My mom and dad lived in Killeen when he was at Fort Hood. Love Texas.
Thank You so much for the information. God bless you.
Thanks so much for the nice comment Patti. Hope you get back to Western NC soon.
Patti Kelly I would love to visit North Carolina.
I have some nice beach homes on the market ;-)
Obviously you have no idea what you are talking about Steven Charles Move along troll.
Keith Bloemendaal Ok, this actually made me laugh out loud. Good one!
Great JoB!!
Hey burke county native here! I appreciate the love and I love how you put Morganton on the map
Thanks brother. There have been 4 families I know of that have moved to Burke County after watching some of my videos. That's crazy to me, but kind of cool. We live in a nice part of NC. Blessed to be here!
Tony Lee Glenn I wouldn't wanna be anywhere else in the world then wnc
(Swannanoa)
Tony, thanks for the video very informative beautiful state !
+Enrique Torres Thanks for the comment Enrique. Come visit us some time! TLG
I live in Charlotte NC and it's the best place ever. Best state in my Opinion! It's got beautiful mountains and beaches. Glad to call it my home state 💖
Amen NC the Best!
My family is from Spruce Pine! Love Love Love NC!!!! Moving back to Charlotte soon cannot wait!!! Love the mountains of NC!!!!
I love your videos! I'm researching a move up to NC from South Fl. Not sure on the area just yet. Visited Huntersville last year and loved it. Probably looking for somewhere that isn't too mountainous but not completely flat either.
Thanks for the information!
thank you for your input. we are looking into the holly springs area. we went back in June for the first time and we absolutely loved it. in comparison to San bernardino ca nc has more to offer a young family as far as activities and schools.
It was a great experience.
It's not human septic you were smelling. Likely hog farms. There are a number of them in Eastern NC.
Loved your video!!!' Thank you!!
We are full,if you are thinking about moving to NC.....And are from NJ/NY,California, Eastern Penn, please move somewhere else.
Stacy Clarkson lol so true
So funny... no vacancies
HAHAHA - think most of people from those states already moved to Florida.
No, they're flooding Texas...ugh! Bringing their broken politics. Sorry to say that, but it's true. Stay home and fight for your state!
Half Backs. They leave Florida and stop half way back to NY or NJ.
Great info. Thinking about it. Peace
I’ve lived southwest of Asheboro all my life, but lately I really want to move to Asheville because I’m thinking of going to UNC Asheville when I go to college, and not to mention Asheville is just a beautiful place in general so I recommend going to Asheville if you’re moving to North Carolina.
Melissa Ellison I want to visit North Carolina. Asheville is one of the first places on my list of things to see in NC.
Great video, looking forward to live there W my family, thank's again.
I thank you for a great video describing a great state. I am in the early stages of planning a move in a few yrs. your insight has helped. I have spent my whole life in the armpit of America with rude nasty arrogant people. Much more research to do.
I'm moving to North Carolina from South Florida by the end of this year. I just put my South Florida condo up on the market and ready to sell😊
Hope you like it when you get here. I know many people who have moved up from Florida.
Tony Lee Glenn There are many people leaving Florida. I’m in the process of moving to Waxhaw, NC near the South Carolina border. I love the landscape and it’s beautiful there. My cousins live there and they have a farm with chickens, cows, goats😊.
Thank god I chose this for my state report.
Good advice Forrest. Appreciate your comment, and cool to hear from a Morganton-born viewer. It's one of my favorite towns in the state.
Hope this was helpful to anyone!!
kcozgrove what's your price range?
kcozgrove you should use Zillow
kcozgrove are you looking for something near south tryon?
kcozgrove if you need help looking for a home, my girlfriend is a real estate agent here in Charlotte.
Great comment here my friend. I think you'll be making a good move.
Tony Lee Glenn new Bern is cool.
The Conservative Pelican
You forgot to mention the epicenter of the Venus Flytrap.
As a kid, I DREAMED of living in a place like that.
Jessica Ulloa I'm in Miami and I can concur about Orlando and Miami. I'm planning my escape and considering North Carolina.
And yes, we are definitely full. Please see SC.
Yes
Thank you for the link. Thats fantastic ! The wife and i are looking for warmer weather. I for one cant take the winters here in upstate NY anymore. Beautiful up here but between the winter, political and economical environment, its just to much.
Great information My Beloved Mom from small town in NC
I like you video it helped me a lil, I'm planning on my up their Florida soon by myself don't know anything really bout NC but Charlotte sounds good
same here. been in S Florida for a minute but I'm ready for a change.
I'm thinking of relocating to NC from Florida after Hurricane Irma had her way with us. Thanks for the info. Going to check out City-Data right now!
SAME HERE! Thinking of landing in Asheville. Going up in Oct to start looking. I am in Tampa Bay you?
Us too. Near Miss #2. Aiming for Winston Salem.
Judy Lebel
Nah, y'all need to move to SC, particularly Greenville, SC. Lot more stuff going on over there.
Very informative.
+Robbie Swann Appreciate your comment Robbie.
Robbie Swann I
If you like the extremes of cold and hot. I was born and raised in Haw River, NC.
Im moving to tryon nc on thursday Im super excited!! MOUNTAINS HERE I COME!!
+David Marino I think you'll like it a lot David. Good luck my friend.
+Tony Lee Glenn thanx...yea eventually i wanna make it to either waynesville or candler which I LOVE
Wow I loved this video very helpful information Thank you very much
Thank you
Highly recommend hitting if you live or passing through Myra's Ice Cream in Valdese, North Carolina.
We are visiting this coming summer and I'm so excited!
thanks for the advice
Awesome!
I Love NC, Im moving down next year.
+Sonnie's Garden Hey Sonnie -- I made the move just a few years ago and would love to answer any questions you might have about moving to Charlotte (is that where you're coming?) As a real estate agent, I have a great feel for the market.
No I want to move to Lumberton or Fairmont but I might change if I don't find what I want.
Steven Charles Steve I noticed that. That's crazy
I LOVE the county, and I pray we never get "Citified"
When I hear my liberal Cali friends and family talk politics; I praise the Lord I'm not breathing that pollution.....
it has always been my dream to be in cali or NYC maybe one day , i wouldnt say NC is bad but its not like NYC or CALI at all , the only thing here we also do get hit by hurracanes and tornadoes but other then that i do like the weather thou
Ana Vela hahaa indeed
Joshua Phillips 😂😂😂 I know right!!
i'm honestly thinking of applying for jobs in the western north carolina area, coming from the bay area, and i'm tired of, "breathing the pollution" lol. was born and raised in the bay area, and i've had enough of the expensive living and liberal attitude around here. wish me luck that i can find employment in that area! lol.
being a californian, let me tell you that it's overrated. maybe it's just that i'm tired of california, but unless you're ultra liberal and can afford to spend a lot of money on housing, you'll probably hate it.
yeah I know I also live in North Carolina, in Elizabeth city and I love it, close to the beach, and VA, I have moved away to KY, and a few other states, But I always came to NC where I was born and raised.
We love vactioning there and are considering moving from MI.
also NC feels like it's the home state to America and the blue Ridge mountains, ashe county, etc. it's just a good place
tarheelboy8888 I live in NC
Yea def...i moved from fl west palm to asheville and now i bought my first home in maggie valley and god willing im never leaving this area....but i do love gatlinburg (except its getting to crazy out there)
It also has seasons, but not as harsh of a winter or as harsh of a summer
I'm looking forward to visiting first week of November. Going to a dental lab conference in Charlotte. Going to check out some real estate too! I'm from Massachusetts and looking for a nice change! Thank you for all your info. It is quite helpful. I'm going to spend three days in Charlotte and 3 days in Raleigh! I'm excited about my trip!
+Barbara Jansen Sure wish you could get up toward the mountains too Barbara - that's my favorite, but the urban areas are where the action is - particularly for jobs. A dental lab person could do quite well in Asheville though - nice place. TLG
how was the trio? your thoughts on Charlotte? Raleigh?
ONE GOOD THING I LEFT OUT ABOUT MOVING TO NORTH CAROLINA IS THAT NORTH CAROLINA IS AN EXCELLENT STATE TO RETIRE IN DEPENDING ON WHAT AREA OR TOWN
central piedmont area, I live in Rowan county and love it perfect distance between beach and mountains
I'm moving down from Connecticut in about 4 or 5 months- I've had it with how expensive it is to live here.
Ryguy TheFlyGuy hi I'm from CT too. I want to move but started to do research. How do you feel in NC it is easy to find a job?
It is not a cheep state to live in.......
I'm in S Florida too. ready to move on.
My mom is from Spruce Spine. I go up there a lot to see family and do some fishing. I live in Stokesdale, NC. Pretty rural area like were you live.
Never been to Stokesdale. Got to go visit there sometime.
Roger Dickinson ..i live in new york now but i am from walnut cove..just 20 minutes from stokesdale..moving back in january..been up here 27 years
I have family from Spruce Pine
Charlotte just 2 hours from Asheville, beautiful mountains
I suggest Beaufort right at the coast, it's a nice little town. It was voted coolest small town in America! Its absolutely beautiful!!
Excellent suggestion Grace. I've only been there one time and was very impressed. It is a gorgeous place!
Have you ever been to Rockingham, North Carolina?
A few times but it's been many years.
When was the last time you've been to Rockingham?
+Tony Lee Glenn They had a great race track in Rockingham. I miss it so much!
You are just seeing a lot of of troll comments Robin.
WHY?@@tonyleeglenn
Found my cabin in maggie valley....and never leaving
Most beautiful place in this state, Maggie Valley.
i understand how u feel. im just south of ashville
I lived in Morganton area for 18 years have moved up north to Minnesota about 7 years ago but can't stand the cold any more planning to move back to north carolina in the next few years.
I live in the foothills, Rutherford county and it's a beautiful place to live. Only one hour drive to Asheville or Charlotte.
Thanks for commenting Tommy. Yes - I love that area too. Should have mentioned it in this video.
Also - I shot some golf video years ago at Troon and Prestwick - not too far from your location.
@@tonyleeglenn Yep, my mom is from Prestwick
Good one!
I love my mountains.
Just don't live in that part of town and you will be fine :)
That last piece of advice applies to most places and not just to N.C.
Gray Bryan Excellent points here.
It's really hard to beat the scenery in the Northwest. However you're def right about how people are not as friendly. And there's not as many cooler smaller towns and stuff. My favorite place in the Northwest is Bend, Oregon though. It's an amazing place.
why Raleigh over Charlotte?
Smaller city, closer to the coast. I just don't particularly care for Charlotte.
This whole subject matter is subjective though (of course). :)
The middle of the state just doesn't have as much to offer as the mountains or the coast.
If I ever moved back to NC it would have to be somewhere west of I-77 and at least an hour drive away from CLT!
Come to Hendersonville!
I think Hendersonville or Mills River is a great place to settle if you are retired. Charlotte is where the jobs are.
A lot of companies are coming into NC. Most are going into adjacent cities surrounding Research Triangle Park (RTP) in North Carolina. Raleigh, Apex, Cary, Sanford, Durham, Wake Forest, Morrisville, and Pittsboro are on fire for business development.
Thanks Tony Lee! I’m moving nearer to the Pisgah Mountains soon! ☀️🥳☺️
And oh yes.. I happen to be from Chicago.
Whatever that means..
Have you8 moved there yet? Also from Chicago and thinking of moving to the Blue Mt Ridge area.
Mountains. Hills. Ocean. Perfect!
Jennings Putnam you are so right about that! I love North Carolina as much as I love Virginia (I live in Virginia). I am so glad my family moved to Virginia years ago, yall. I don't miss the Nawth at all because Southerners are friendlier.
Hi Tony.. great info! I'm thinking of moving to Hendersonville. What can you tell about that city? Thanks!
I think this guy is biased towards NC! ;-) Should we really listen to a guy this biased? In this case, I think yes! Sound advice, common sense answers and he's a great representative for his state. Great job Tony.
Danny Fyffe i live in North Carolina its a great place to live and amazing place to be during winter great state
Marble League Virginia and North Carolina are the best places to live on the planet. I love living in Virginia. And I loved visiting North Carolina, I must do so again soon.
Escaped California to Wake Forest 5 years ago. No regrets.
Northern NC is a wonderful place, great rural areas and close to Raleigh,Durham for great job opportunitys.
When you say "this whole area is hot..." when you were hovering just south of Raleigh... did you mean hot as in hot market, or hot weather?
I've been there , loved it
I want to visit North Carolina. I love Virginia so I am not moving, but North Carolina is an excellent place to visit. I love the Blue Ridge Mountains and OBX.
I live in Asheville
