My biggest pause with wgu is they said it will take 2 years and I would have to basically quit my teaching job to student teach for 3 months. In my state I have a temporary license and I have 3 years to get my grad degree in education. So as sad as I am I am now looking for another school. 😞
There’s a girl I know who went to WGU and was able to bypass demonstrative teaching with approval of WGU and her mentor. It made her degree a different title but ultimately the same. Her degree was in educational studies with a focus on elementary education.
Do have more information on how your friends was able to bypass the demonstration teaching? I am a TA at my current elementary school but I serving a teaching role. @@nutterbutter865
WGU allows teachers who already have their own classrooms to be "teachers of record," which means you can potentially be a paid student teacher. You have to work with your district and PCE coordinator to make sure this happens! 3 months of pay is a lot! :)
Did you do any sort of teaching before like subbing or in a Sunday School setting? If so, did it help when you got to this part of the program? Thank you.
Hi I was an after-school program leader at a high school and it helped prepare me. But I think subbing is the best way to get experience before student teaching.
Did you do your observation teaching right before demonstration teaching or was there a big time gap? And was it the same teacher/placement, or two different placements? Thanks!
Hey there. Did you have *any* say in which district you'd be placed? I've spent a good six years building relationships subbing at a particular district, and if I'm going to have to take a break from actually earning money, I'd prefer to at least do it in a place I trust. I imagine the answer is no, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
I am in a similar situation to the student above. I am a TA but I am serve in a teaching capacity. My current principal is willing to allow me to do my student teaching at the school but when I ask my mentor about she said it would depend weather the placement specialist would approve the placement. @@ItsSharonEmme

Good work Sharon! I am thinking of recommending WGU to another CA hopeful teacher. Thanks for your review.
Insightful information. I have a question. For those who have a full-time job, is it possible to do PCE and DT without losing one's current job?
no, from my understanding DT is full time (unpaid)

When are you able to apply for student teaching since it takes 6months
I have a question , is the student teaching online or in person , if it’s in person how do they place you since WGU is in Utah.
Hi there, the student teaching is all in-person.
The WGU placement coordinator will contact schools within your specific area to find a mentor teacher willing to take on a student teacher.

this is a good question- hopefully she answers !
Did you have to start at a specific time or were you able to start at a new month?
Does WGU prepare you for the edTPA’s and the RICA?
For the edTPA I recommend mamaw yates on UA-cam. And for the RICA try James Zarrillo.
WGU does not adequately prepare you 😬🫣
Do you have to take the RICA for elementary education?
Well about recording is it allowed to reveal students faces and id’s i am surprised by far!!!
Their parents must sign a release form to give consent. If they don’t give consent their child cannot be filmed.
What happen if I’m already working as a teacher? Would count even if I’m getting paid?
@@yarielislopez9265 yes you can become a “teacher of record”. You can ask your placement coordinator about this.
How to record yourself?
I just used my iPhone with a tripod.
How many days a week did you have to go
Every day except school holidays for 3 consecutive months. :)

You can let your placement coordinator know that you have a district willing to take you. They should be able to work with you on that.
