From the first time I heard this version of row jumbo, I knew it was going to be one of my favorite versions. I still can't get enough. Thats what the dead will do to you. Since 1978 the majority of the music I listen to is the good old Grateful Dead. I love the way things are strumming along and before you know it they are in a jam that smokes. All you can do is smile.
I was lucky enough to see Jerry with the Grateful Dead 16 shows from 1990 to 1995.I have so much love and respect for those love the Dead but never got to see old Jer!
I was nine years old and the folks hated rock and roll. Never would have heard this or the other shows without you guys who were there, taped and shared. Thanks, thanks, thanks. RIP Jerry, Pigpen, Brent, Keith. See ya on the other side someday.
I started listening to the Dead in the 70's.it's amazing how their music takes me back. Gives me goosebumps. No other band in my 40+ years of listening and playing does that.
This is probably the most beautiful version I have ever heard of Row Jimmy Row. Garcia is at his best vocal magic, pulling those notes from deep inside with a tenderness that can lullaby any soul....Phil is giving a masterclass on his own and the guitar of Garcia is what myths are made of......Thanks Jerry, we truly miss you even the ones that, like me, never saw you playing live.
+Alan Brain So poetic, wow, you caught that incredibly unique something the Dead had and never saw them. I saw them first in '68 in Phila, twice with no more than 400 people at freebies they'd show up at, many times Fillmore East, some West. The bond between them, the "trip" you took on their "bus", and the audience . . . never seen anything else like it.
Alan Brain I also believe this is THE BEST I've ever heard this song played. I'm so glad that my teenage years were with The Grateful Dead. I'm eternally Grateful.
Will forever be grateful (no pun intended) that these guys cared about sound and recording back then. I was born way too late to be there live, so this is the closest I have.
Julie catch a rabbit by his hair Come back steppin' like to walk on air Get back home where you belong And don't you run off no more Don't hang your head, let the two time roll Grass shack nailed to a pine wood floor Ask the time baby I don't know Come back later, gonna let it show I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row Here's a half dollar if you dare Double twist when you hit the air Look at Julie down below The levee doin' the do-pas-o I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row Broken heart don't feel so bad You ain't got half of what you thought you had Rock you baby to and fro Not too fast and not too slow I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know, Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row. That's the way it's been in town, Ever since they tore the jukebox down Two bit piece don't buy no more Not so much as it done before I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there I don't know Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row
Why is I went to it dead show or JGB band show, The 1st 2030 seconds of Garcia lighting up would always bring tears to my eyes and a smile on my face.... No other player ever did that... Saw him in 71 and on and off until his passing.... He Polished my thought Jewels so many times...I Thank you Mr. G it was one hell of a ride
Walking around inside Barton hall right now, since I can't post a pic here I will try to paint it...crisp, clear beautiful fall day, leaves in full color, this song playing, looking at where Jerry and the boys (and girl) were standing when they played this... goosebumps and fighting off some sort of allergy 😂.
What i wouldn't give to be in a hallway one more time in a slow motion amorphous communal dance of swirls and twirls and reaching the sky after swimming in the soil and seeing that fucking smile on every face and the knowing looks in each others' eyes.
+photoslum Yep. No doubt. But, some people never had the experience. If there were one thing I could share with people I care about, it would be the feeling and connection you got when they were totally on and you totally got it.
Glenn Hall That's a nice. It was terribly lacking at the Dead and Co show i went to, despite being a great show. It was a first show for a couple friends, they loved it, but they don't know what they didn't get to love. Maybe a summer tour will bring some of that feeling back.
you said what ive been thinking lately. "what i wouldn't give...one more time." Ive been to my share of shows when Jer was in his physical body and i went to Fare Thee Well (took my 17 year old son). It was magical actually. I was in a bad place in my head and the boys got me out of that funk i had been in for years. I went to Alpine last summer for Dead and Co and it was really fun. Not the same of course, but I love Bobby so much. Always have. Summer tour is going to be so much fun. I cant wait to dance to my favorite band with my favorite people! love to all you kind brothers and sisters out there!
As great as he was Jerry is still wildy underrated as a musician. His electric guitar is what everyone remembers but when you factor in his ability to totally nail the slide guitar, steel guitar, acoustic, and when he was really playing the banjo he was one of the top banjo players in the world. His contribution to music and inspiration he has had on people can not be understated. He was a true pioneer and help move music along. There is no one out there today that carry that title of pioneer, it's all been done. There are a lot of imitators that can play and sound similar but the creativity and the IT factor is not there. There has never been anyone that has gone for it as much as Jerry did. Sometimes it wasn't quite there but when it was it was not just good but soul changing and that is his gift to those that are capable of getting the Dead experience
This Dead in Cornell (May 77') is THE BEST dead concert I have ever heard...start to finish, there is not another one out there any better...in my opinion of course.
What courage to jump into space and recreate a new what a timid person would have done in 'safe' 'predictable' ways. This is a grate example of why it is we keep rediscovering all the things we thought we knew! Thank you.
5/8/77 is one of the greatest recorded concerts in human history, any type of music, bar none. 5/8's Row Jimmy and Brown Eyed Woman are masterpieces among the rest of the amazing set that night
This has to be the best version of this song they ever did. It’s flawless. I’ve had chronic IBS for 5 years now, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about ending my life. This song and other dead music helps get me thru another day…
As about as close as you can get to the creation of an American folk tradition from pure scratch. Of course they were steeped deeply in Appalachian folk music. Workingman's Dead is another example of pure myth creation. Pure Americana at its best that along with the Doors is unparalleled.
the heart is going to love what it does, because who can contest with hopeless amounts of joy? It's only fair, to give our minds the key toward salvation...
For many years this was one of a handful of tunes i would name when asked what my favorite GD song was. Still is one of the best IMO tho these days it gets less airplay any way around that i get my music, hint to all you guys and girls w bands out there
Ah, my first BettyBoard--the stellar Barton Hall! I still think this and Boston and Buffalo from the adjoining nights are among the best shows of ANY era. The boys were on fire. One can't say enough about these shows. The "Take A Step Back" is so funny too! Jerry: "Yeah, see yer friends in front are getting horribly bug-eyed." LMFAO!!
Being from muscle shoals I love donna.. and usually everyone hates donna.. seeing all this love makes me happy I know she screams like a skinned banshee but hell yea donna
There´s a mp3 version of Row Jimmy which is 11.18 min and it is said to be from the View From The Vault, probably released in 2000. Outstanding, both musically and soundwise. It´s the very song/version that poisoned me with the deadly flu. Greetings to you all Deadheads!
+Marti LaChance He played it all too little. Singularly expressive normally. On slide he could both skewer and shower the agony and the ecstasy of their music.
except that was pedal steel, an entirely different instrument, but yea its amazing he was skilled in so many different techniques, styles and instruments. He's certainly no derek trucks or duane allman on slide, but in my opinion his slide solos on row jimmy are as good as any slide guitar I've ever heard
Did they really put a commercial before "Broken heart don't feel so bad, you don't have half of what you thought you had"??? wtf. Fyi; best GD line ever.
There's a fantastic audience copy of this show on archive.net, it will make you feel like you're a few feet from the stage. I recommend giving it a listen!
Donna singing in key and the emotionally smooth slide solos make for the most dreamy version ever
And her trills are amazing.
❤

Jerry's voice just makes me think....everything's just gonna be alllllllright..
A voice and tone that says 'I dont know anything for sure, but I sure feel a lot, a lot of good, a lot of shit, a lot of light, a lot of dark'.
Jerrys voice literally calms my anxiety...I can feel him singing. Not just hear but feel

Here's a half dollar if you dare

Look at Julie down below
The levee doin' the do-pas-o
I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know
Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row
Broken heart don't feel so bad
You ain't got half of what you thought you had

There was definitely a cross pollenation between the dead and reggae here. So awesome.
