While I certainly can "afford" a $40,000 watch, I would never pay that for a product that harks back to the pre-industrial age. Wristwatches are simply totally unnecessary for literally every human living in 2022. Every other device you can imagine in the home and in a car displays the time with incredible accuracy. They are also literally free. People that buy wristwatches because they like the "look of them" are the same morons who buy smart watches, tablets and smart phones. Absolute wankers I call them. I really enjoy watch channels though. They serve to prove to me how smart I am compared to the idiots buying gimmicks. Cheers.
At first I thought they were crazy. Then I realized this is the coolest watch you could have. People spending this kind of money on a watch are usually very predictable. Most of the time they end up getting the same watches, nice but nothing special. If you get this GxShock, then there are 3 things you know for sure: you’re cool, you’re different and you have big balls. Hats off to anybody who got this watch.
Thats true. Every collection by the end of their journey is very similar. Usually a speedy, explorer, and a random GS or Cartier or Lange.

Great video....I have this watch. Purchased at a 20% discount. Been collecting watches for 50 years...have had Rolex's, a Grand Seiko, Seiko Landmasters, Tudors, Eterna, etc. Can easily say I enjoy this by far the most of any watch...yes, you can ding the movement; but the watch is so incredibly beautiful. I can't stop looking at it. The size and weight are perfect for me. Very comfortable to wear and I don't have any scratches of any kind after a month of daily use. It keeps perfect time. The light comes on automatically when I lift to look at it and fades away. It is stealth wealth for sure...I'm not out to impress anyone with it but myself. I do own 18 other G-Shocks and may wear one of those on weekends or for yard work or working out; but this one dominates my wrist like no other...I love seeing videos like this about it and reading about it...close to retirement and decided to reward myself.....very happy I did!! Since I got a good deal on it, I figured I would not lose much if I decided to sell. Kind of a no brainer for me to try out...

Thanks for the great review. Not cheap by G Shock standards but really not expensive compared to luxury sports watches in general. Probably the coolest watch you can get for the money right now. Of course it helps to be a square lover and understand what Casio is doing here. Most of the controversy is coming from folks who wouldn't spend this much on a watch to begin with let alone a Casio. Casio made it for a select group of fans and they truly produced something special. It'll be more appreciated in the future by the masses.

Beautiful and perfect. I have the GMW B5000-TVA-1ER and I love it. Not that advanced as this one, but the most expensive one that I have. This one is a collection item. But I want to use a g-shock in every situation, so I bought the regular stainless steel GMW B5000D and I like it.,it is my beater watch, even if heavier. But this one in the video is a masterpiece. 👍👍

Good to hear that the module has some special treatment, e.g. gold (I'm guessing it helps preserve the circuitry so the module lasts) GS quartz modules get special treatment too, and GS will service them, so hope that Casio go down the path of servicing and preserving these wonderful pieces.

MR-G represents Casio pushing themselves to do things that either seemed impossible or hadn’t even been considered. I’m still stuck on the idea of polished titanium not to mention the black-polished exotic materials like Cobarion.
I’m also waiting for my Virtual Armor(the TVB) to arrive. As much as I love the camo iterations, I really want this one. Your thoughts on it are the exact way I feel about the Square - I’m not trying to impress anyone with wrist baubles. Instead, I’m impressed by what Casio has achieved. The G Shock is at once, beautiful and innovative. Stealth Wealth!

@@Hialeah1925 I ended up never wearing it and sold the TVB and another watch and bought the MRGB5000r1, the one that arrives in the US in February. I think Titanium on a rubber strap could be a daily driver for me but I know I’m going to have to cut that rubber strap to size.
There’s a German tuber who reviewed the watch back in November and Casio has posted vids of the watch for a while.

I feel like “why the hell did you spend this much on a G-Shock Square” is going to be the most common question. I’m not sure I’ve got a great answer to that yet. I don’t regret the purchase one bit, and I absolutely love this thing. Is it worth the MSRP? Likely not, but push for a discount, and you’ll start to see some value. I’ve owned the titanium camo model in the past and really enjoyed that one as well. The MR-G is definitely a level above.

It's very nice. I have a gw5000u, and I'm super pleased with the build quality and performance. But this is on an entirely different level. It's probably worth the asking price, but you have to be a hardcore enthusiast to really get it. I get it, but can't afford it.

I got my GW5000U-1JF (the Japanese domestic versions are always *better* than the international versions of the same product) and was immediately... *Happy?* to have spent the 250.00 USD. The quality is on another level, and it's a secret handshake for watch ppl & G-shock enthusiasts.
This one is a GW5000U on coke & steroids with a desert of angel dust. It is truly a God-tier G-square.

I got to hold/wear one at the watch store yesterday and loved the look; but can’t justify the cost. …but true respect to the enthusiasts and collectors that get/got it. I mean, at least it’s a nice quality watch vs those gimmicky and blinged out Hublot watches 🙂
They might keep evolving the cases to a degree, but they don’t change the modules function enough in my opinion. Casio in general really
theyre constained by battery life... this module can run for 9 months (w display on) without solar recharge and the battery is rated for 50+ years in normal use..

I met Random Rob at the recent Wind-Up in SF and he had the silver version. We talked about it and he let me see it upclose. Man, the fine finishing and build really comes through. It is so perfectly sharp and multi-finished and feels really nice in hands. Quite light for the survival titanium they used on these. Costs a little less than the black, but for me the silver version showcases all the fine nuances the best and looks better to me. Would I pay almost $4k for one?... All I can say is I don't think so... For now.
Very cool that you got to meet RR! The silver is cool. I think its possible to get it in the high 2000's with some negotiations. About $2750 I'm guessing which makes it more reasonable.
@@EscapementWatch I handled both in person as well. Both are amazing but the finishing details really come through more on the silver version. The black is still really nice but a bit too glossy for me.

Great review of a great watch ..... but.... the price is more than a tad high in my humble opinion. I love the new mechanics of that case and the super hard titanium parts along with the positive display. I already have the long discontinued titanium black with the matt shoulders of the case that looks like the basic resin version apart from the guilt pushers and screws. That will do me for now. I'd like this new MR-G but apart from the price (it's more than twice that of my titanium version) it's sold out from Casio in the UK so I have plenty of time to ponder.
Yeah they are selling well. I hope they are secretly very limited to make the price more understandable. Casio very hush hush about limited runs it seems. Casio torture test they used a power tool with abrasive pad to scratch it and it didn't scratch. Also, they are selling with a healthy discount.

I would go for a Tudor Black Bay 58 myself. Paying $4000- for a quartz seems a bit much.
It looks great, but one drop, and that finish is ruined....which does go against what a G-Shock is supposed to be. Not a high-dollar luxury piece, but a "beater". Having all the proper internals aside, I'd be afraid of every doorknob in the house. My GW-B5600 has all the same features and functions at a fraction of the price, and if the bezel or strap get messed up or worn out, it's dirt cheap to make it look new again. I did swap the combo bracelet for a regular resin strap, since those bracelets are hard to find, and expensive if you do.
Yeah the zaratsu polish scratches so easily. It's a controversial G. I can't believe how fast they sold. G-shock fans are insane! I'm happy with my blue one but want the MRG because who wouldn't want the best G? If money were no object!

"What G-Shock is supposed to be" - maybe in your mind, but with the newer MR-G watches and some MTG Watches, Casio has repositioned the G-SHock brand to appeal to a lot more people for a lot more uses.. I enjoy my beater G-Shocks, but nowhere near as much as this one.

I think if G-shock opened their doors to Teddy for a factory tour on these models, people would realize they are not a rip off. Luxury for sure but there is some work that goes into these I'm sure.

Absolutely no one ever answers, I'm hoping you would chime in. In your experience, how scratch proof is the DLC coating anyways. Is it pretty much entirely regular abrasive material proof, i mean it seems like it wouldn't have any problems at all with most crap like asphalt, concrete or whatever. Does it seem like it would take something serious to cut it 🤔
casio has a video on their channel with an abrasive pad and power tool trying to scratch it and no scratches after attacking it with the powertool

Meh, not bothered by it. Have you seen what the movements cost in $4000 automatic watches? About $150 to $300. The movement is not the expensive part, unless you look at real high end stuff like Patek. Also, this needs no service. I have to service all my mechanical watches every 5 to 7 years for about $500 to $750 a piece. I'm sort of over it. So this Casio seems very attractive to me. Very well made, exclusive, maintenance free and reliable.

The only way anyone will believe you paid $4000 for that watch is to keep price tag on the watch and to walk around with the cellphone on having Casio website on the screen. Would I like to have that watch.....yes but even if I have the money, I would never buy it.

For that price the quartz movement should be thermocompensated so that it still has a good accuracy even with no radio signal imho. Doesn't need to be Chronomaster level but it should be good. It's competing with the Seiko astron, entry level grand seiko, and the Citizen chronomaster.

I’m sure they are nice. However, that Sallaz finishing goes against what G-Shock are. With $4000 price, it should be a small limited production. Lastly, the module inside is nothing spacial. It does not feature anything new or special function.

I've never had a 100 meter Casio give out on me, no matter how many shocks, I appreciate the mineral crystals, the rest is marketing hype.

I own many. Rolex,Omega,Panerai,JLC,Tudor,Seiko and many G shock. I can’t wrap my mind around 4k. $2500, I’m in. I’m going to find a used one in 5 years going for the price of a vcr. Already happening with the analog MR-G stuff.

I love both of my gold squares, but this is just an ordinary module, dressed up in a fancy case and bracelet, that can’t even tell you the battery charge without using the app.

Compare the usual MR-G to this, I know which one I would buy. The usual MR-G looks far nicer and most of them are a lot cheaper than the square.
Why don't they put a 10k price, obviously people will buy, a watch that has the design of their cheapest plastic $50 square. The materials and workmanship are not worth the money.
Materials and workmanship is what's worth the money in this MR-G, that's why what you refer to as a cheap plastic $50 square only costs $50. Same with Swiss Made Watches, if the brand has excellent materials with high end workmanship you end up paying a premium. Cost goes even higher depending on the level of the movement it uses. Some Swiss Made watches are very cheap because of the materials used and the lower grade workmanship, also cheap mechanical movements will lower the price even more.
Plastic $50 Squares or a Plastic $50 Swiss Made Swatch, both are good and work well. I prefer watches that are better made and with better materials, and I'm willing to pay more as I understand what goes into making these watches.
In saying the above, absolutely nothing wrong with a Cheap Plastic $50 Square :)

A fool and his money are easily parted I guess. I've never been a G-Shock person, but this is beyond insane to me. What's next, a solid gold F-91W for $10,000? There are SO many great watches one could have for that kind of cash - Tudor, Omega, Grand Seiko, Breitling, Bremont, Zenith, Nomos, etc. Or you could have a $100 Casio with a glitzy case slapped on it that can't be used for the one thing it's supposed to be good at, because that would ruin the reason you spent $4000 on it instead of $400. Smort.
Well, I'm a very happy fool! This watch is just so cool...go look at one sometime...when I picked mine up, the store manager helped me with the bracelet and went on and on how impressed he was with it...they sell most of the brands you reference...

NOT TRUE! Check out the brand RZE! They make titanium watches with screwed links.
Casio is ripping off. They release TB, TVA, TCM all with DLC coating on Titanium. They later started to cheap out by making TCC, TCF IP coated only. TCC is special case due to TranTixxi Ti Alloy with special IP coating smoother than MRG B5000 and dual laser engraving, however its still IP. Now they release this MRG at 4K MSRP is ridiculous. Also the silver one is only TiC, Titanium Carbide which gets scratched up faster than DLC is for $3500. Sakurawatches had those TVA, TCM, TB for $1K msrp at one point. This is 4x the price with no changes except the new shock bezel and Cobarion and new DAT55 Ti Alloy all in DLC again. Casio is making Sinn level of overpricing now.

I am sure it is an incredible watch, but I would argue it is a bad G-Shock. A G-Shock is meant to be beaten on and I don’t know how many people will want to be banging around a $4k watch whose value comes from its fine polishing

Your view of G Shocks is way out of date....have you looked at the other MR-G's?
Agreed. A $4000- G-Shock will be protected against scratches at all costs. And most likely not worn in situations where you normally would need a G-shock.
Same can be said for any Rolex Sub, Gmt or Explorer but that has never stopped people buying them. I think the direction Casio are going here is great with these MR-G’s. I’d really like to see Casio upsize the square movement slightly and offer a slightly larger display and pushers whilst retaining the proportions of the original. It doesn’t have to be a ‘in your face’ upsize, but creatively subtle to make a difference.
