I just came across this as we are about to install an intex ultra frame pool (our first home pool ever), the info is amazing, so far the best explanation of alternate chlorination methods I came across!

Chad thank you for sharing such great information. I'm looking at purchasing a DB pool and they have an Ozone generator as an option as well as a Pool Frog Dual. I had a saltwater fish tank for many years and the debate to use Ozone or not goes on and on with nothing definite. It looks like it has many advantages in pool usage, so now I just need to see if the pro's outweigh what the cost might be. I'm still waiting for a quote. I think I've watched 10 of your video's just today and have learned so much. I'm doing the same thing with my pool as I did with setting up my SW fish tank, research, research and research some more. Been in the pool maintenance for over 40 years this is a knowledgeable man. I also sell alternative systems but you must maintain a .5-1ppm chlorine level for them to work. City water is usually about .5. Uv and ozone are great at breaking down chloramines
Sad part is that most municipalities are switching to a chloramine based disinfecting system for our water. Seems to be going backwards from what the pool industry is trying to avoid. Another very informative and interesting video. Thank you!
Good info. Some I already knew, some I didn't. The repitition got on my nerves 1-2 times would be fine for me. I realize some people need to hear things 4-6 times before it sinks in. You answered my question about a salt system on a stock tank pool (galvanized steel). There is another youtuber showing how to install one on a stock tank. I only have one question I am building a large 25 foot waterfall going into a large swimming pool and I would like to go with the ozone generator is that a good choice?
Salt (sodium chloride) just temporarily donates its Chlorine to the Hypochlorite that kills the overgrowth and then turns back into regular salt. The electro-lysis is how electricity separates (lysis = part goes to positive electrode & part goes to negative electrode) the salt's sodium from its chlorine enough to let the desired hypochlorite form. Because the salt mostly gets recycled, it lasts a long time. The surfaces that get electrified do slowly crud up though, so ones you can clean will save you frequently* replacing cartridges that keep the electric surfaces sealed up (just make sure the electricity is off before cleaning the electrolysis surfaces). When cleaning the electrolysis cell isn't enough, that usually means the crudded surfaces have degraded (they all do eventually), so the life- expectancy will depend on how thick the original electrode surfaces were. They're generally titanium, but that's usually a coating (not solid), so figure out how thick that coating is.

Insanely great video. What about combining two of these methods…ionizer and O3 so you can eliminate all chlorine? Can O3 be used as the supplemental oxidizing agent needed when using an ionizer?

i bought a cheap intex salt water generator 129.00 at walmart, bags of salt are around 5 dollars each. so i spend much less with salt than i was with chlorine, and the water is much smoother with salt.

About the Ozone section, I see there is an Oxygen pool system ad and it seems like its adding that directly in the pool. They show a jet streaming into the pool. Is that safe? It seems somewhat contrary to what you said. Whats your take on that?

Thanks so much for your informative symposium! We are favoring the ozone system. So we have a couple questions: In our desert location (Las Vegas), we have a stubborn problem with 'mustard algae' - a free-floating yellowish algae that clings to walls. As such, it wouldn't be exposed to the ozone. Do we then rely upon the level of chlorine to suppress the algae, or do we add a copper/silver algaecide? ALSO, where would the generator be positioned in the system? We understand the ozone molecule is extremely reactive, so if would it damage cartridge filter pleats if mounted after the pump? Similarly, is there risk of damage to PVC piping and valves if mounted downstream? Perhaps it's best mounted upstream of all equipment, on the supply line from the pool? Your comments appreciated, THANKS so much for your contribution!!
+Brian H Vedder to prevent mustard algae I would highly recommend you use a mustard algaecide like you spoke of as a weekly preventive. That would be good enough. You would want the ozone hooked up as the last thing in the system right before the water goes back into the pool.
Great training video. Quick question: I am going from salt system to the ionizer system, will the salt in the water cause premature failure to the electrodes? If so, should I reduce the salt content by draining some of the water, let's say half, and refilling the pool to normal level? Thanks for the help.

Yes ---I have a salt water pool and a solar ionizer and I only run my pump about 3 hours a day and have salt set on 25%. this saves a bunch on my electric cost. My pool water is like a glass of water. the pool stays clean. Bob
has anyone investigated iodine (another halide, like chlorine and bromine) as a health alternative? iodine was historically used as a drinking water purification. iodine is also still used to treat wounds and in surgery, and these days most of us are iodine deficient, so a dip in the pool would be like a supplement treatment :) If very little chlorine is required, perhaps iodine becomes affordable ?

They would konflic with each other so you don't want to do that. For instance salt in a salt system would damage the core of an ionizer and the copper content in the pool for the ionizer would affect the ozone.

Yes I would drain out probably three-quarters of the pool and then fill it back up

Look around for Baquacil. That doesnt use chlorine at all.

You'll have to get a copper test kit and any normal test kit will test your pH for you.

Using just one of them woould reduce chlorine use so greatly, that combining the two would not make a huge difference.

I think your chlorine level would be so low with these systems that it wouldnt give you much of a difference to add it.

And I and eyes are requires copper in the water. And the copper isn't good for an ozone generator.

AOP vs Ozone generator. What's better? I'm hearing AOP is much weaker than an Ozone generator.
