Judging by the sewer design I think the sewer of Paris is much better than the sewer of New York or any other big cities in the world. This is environmentally acceptable for healthy living. What a great innovation.
Comms, the sewerage waste system, drinking water, and non drinking water all in one accessible network. The people who thought up,designed, and built this multiple purpose network are truly geniuses. The fact that this network is still fully functional and still operating today is impressive!!
Now THIS is how a sewerage system should be built, maintained and allowed to function!!! The English are very proud of the London sewer system, but it has nowhere near the functionality of the Paris system. It also speaks volumes of the political system of France that both the local and national governments remained invested in seeing the completion of the sewer system, even though it took several decades. Then there is the fact that Paris continues to invest in the system today to ensure its continued operation, while also paying close attention to the ecological impact on the environment and how to make it a positive, rather than negative impact! I found this documentary absolutely fascinating! I knew nothing of the Parisian sewer system before, but now I believe it to one of, if not the BEST, sewerage systems in the WORLD today! Comparable, and maybe sometimes even superior, to more modern systems. Parisians have every right to be proud of their sewer system, and I agree that it should be considered as part of Paris's cultural legacy, to just to Paris, but to the world too!
Such a magnificent ideas that many country should adopt this genius ideas. Paris is one of my most beautiful cities that I admire and love about when it comes to history and old architectural land mark. I ❤ Paris. 💚😊👍😘
Paris is one of the few large cities I know of that has been able to keep a "mixed" system, that is storm wanter and wastewater. Atlanta for example dug up many of its streets about 15 years ago to separate the two due to the the system being frequently overwhelmed.
All my life (50++ years), i thought this was the way of doing it, not ripping open roads every few weeks to lay a new pipe or pull a new cable. Only in my vision, I would have made 2 parallel systems, one carrying sewer and maybe gas, one for the fresh water supply and other service. The later would collect the storm water from road drains etc, so that there are two system, one for foul water - one for run-off water.
I can't afford the money or time to build a sewer system underneath my Lego Castle town, but I sure want to now! I remember someone once built a great Lego model of a modern cityscape with a proper sewer and got it onto the Ideas program. Lego made a mistake passing that one up!
Wow👍👍👍Kudos to geniuses behind that mega project. I hope that someday all countries especially the Philippines will have that kind of sewerage or upgraded version of that were the methane can be used for gas stoves; flowing water from huge pipes can run turbines to create electricity, and solid matters and nitrogen as fertilizers...
big investment but clearly worth it in the long run building system like this instead of single pipes like other cites could save a lot money and time just the upfront cost would be expensive
Isn't the absence of a barrier between wastewater and rainwater a slight oversight with sewer systems like this, causing the Seine to be incredibly polluted during heavy rain? Several Olympic swimmers fell ill after having swum in the Seine.
39:22 Huh ?? If the spillway is closed during high river, then how could the spillway evacuate into the river ? What am I missing here ? Is there some kind of one way valve, or pumping system the force the water into the river ? Aarre Peltomaa
I presume they are trained fir this meaning that they get all kinds of expertise specific to the sewage system. Certain skills are transferable and they seem to work in teams meaning. If few people are sick for a team not to be able to do their jobs, you can transfer members from another team
Orders of magnitude less contaminated. Basically everything used to get in the seine back then. The last 30 years have seen huge efforts in decontamination, dating back to former president and former mayor of Paris Jacques Chirac
According to legend there is an underground river that runs beneath the Paris Opera which surely needs no introduction made famous by a story that everyone has heard of but does it really exist? I assume the Catacombs predate the paris sewer system & i assume they were used to build the sewer system in order to save digging up the streets where these ready made tunnels already existed. Also no mention is made of how the Paris Metro avoids coming into conflict with the sewers as i assume this was built AFTER the sewer system?
Hi, Catacombs explorer here! The metro, sewer and catacombs are actually at different heigth! The "Catacombs" (which is only a very small subset of the large Great South Network of Paris limestone carreers) actually has a few connection points to the sewers, but they are just far deeper. Averaging around 15-18m/45-55ft depth, they are far below the sewer systems, and most of the Subway system (excluding express lines which are actually below the catacombs) You can actually hear the subway in some places of the network. Not sure about inside the official ones, but the GRS (Grand Réseau Sud/Great South Network) is quite large and there's defo places you can hear them So no, the catacombs were far below the depth of sewer system, and as such couldn't be used for that. But the question of conflict is everything is basically on a different heigth! As for the subway, construction was started in 1898, which is a few decades after Napoléon 3 and City infrastructure (Sewers included) major overhauls Hope it helped. Have a great one~
I laughed when they said there was absolutely zero chance of leaks or holes in the water pipe and behind him is a water pipe leaking. I understand that the pressure and water leaking will keep the sewage water out, but it was still contracting him
At Some Point, You Will Be the NEXT PERSON on Earth to DIE. Back: Sobering thought, isn't it? You may not have realized it, but every second, two people die. What happens then? Is there a Heaven and Hell? Are you "good enough" to get to Heaven? Look at the Ten Commandments. Have you ever lied or stolen? (regardless of value) Ever looked with lust and therefore committed adultery in your heart? (see Matthew 5:28) You may see these as "no big deal" but God takes them seriously. He is Holy and said, "be Holy, for I am Holy." God sent His Son, Jesus, to live the perfect life we never could. He took God's wrath on the cross for sinners. Jesus took the punishment of His people’s sins against God, then He rose from the dead. Cry out to God for mercy, confessing and forsaking your sins. Put your trust in Jesus (rather than "good works") to save you. Read your Bible daily and obey what you read.

🤣🤣My friend, we need to stop taking medication and drugs, 100 million tourists visit France every year and the murder rate in the whole of France is lower than the homicide rate in a single neighborhood in New York.
Maybe because they aren't so deep, some of the ones in London can be 25 metres deep. Some parts of the Fleet sewer is 25 metres deep and the overflow relief is even deeper
Anyone who watched this video till the end would agree with me that”this is just beautiful “👍
Amazing

The only thing that changed is that they lined the walls with concrete bcs the bricks were getting unstable in some parts

Paris sewers Looks so clean
One of the best documentaries.
The French are a practical people and they also have very fine engineers.
70 olympic sized pools/hour is CRAZY it's like filling up one pool in under a minute😐
What an amazing documentary
Yes! Outstanding.
Its weird but sewers have always fascinated me 😮
Not weirdest all, very fascinating. Architecturally compelling as well as technically impressive

Far better thn my country's capital sewers
In New Orleans we still call an open drain or gutter a ''French drain '' 😎
So there’s this as well as the catacombs
Now that's a sewer where a flock of penguins may live

New York said "hold my beer" and made enormous metal stomachs that digest sewage to produce combustible gasses.
No one has ever had the idea to upgrade the boats with some low voltage DC motors to run the gate and chains?
Paris was made by genius people
Tourists should visit Kenya, where we av learnt to live with raw, burst sewage during rain,n learn vital lessons of surviving hardships
WHY would anyone want to visit Kenya for that?
Better to learn how to avoid things like that.
Everybody gangsta, till they found a rat colony playing gypsy music.
Yes of course no one can stop if the country unite in common goal achievement is not far from realization of they unite for a common goal

Great video, although I had no idea an "Olympic sized pool" was a unit of measure.
Not really: it is a "visual. / "known size"-aid that makes the scope or quantity applicable more and quicker understandable.
Don't forget the football field unit.

The streets are no better than the sewers.
the freshwater pipes reside within the sewer pipes themselves? lets hope the pipes are well sealed
Well sealed and under huge pressure so nothing can get inside

No way today would they put water pipes in sewers. The Hydrogen sulfide in some of those sewers will eat away the pipe too.
I wish the french could also construct these massive and sophisticated water treatment plants in the African colonies
Well the Frogs gave up their colonies 60 years ago perhaps the Africans can do that on their own that is what sovereign nations do.
I find it funny people always look for ways to pass blame to France and other colonolies 60 years after independence...
