Anglocentric distortion. It was all about the European trade for the Dutch, the volumes and the number of ships were a 100 times bigger. That's were the saw middel and the modern capitalism with it's low interests and reliable money mattered. In the high riks high reward trade with gunships with the Far East even the English could compete. They seem to think European trade was replaced by global trade there, but they simply couldn't compete in the week in week out bulk shipping where the real money was. The VOC didn't start the Golden Age, it only payed it's first dividend in 1633, 60 years into the Dutch Golden Age. It was a niche market, the Ottoman's had blocked the silk road and the Portuguese enemy blocked Lisbon to the Dutch, so spices where hard to get hold of and prices soared. Dutch parliament got involved to fight the Portuguese enemy in the independence war. Only once established over there, the Dutch saw much more possibilities and profit was reinvested. The often very ordinary shareholders of the VOC from all over the Dutch Republic (it was also a nationalistic entreprise for the young nation state) couldn't wait for dividend that long, so the stock exchange came about and the carpenters and maids could cash in as the merchants rich enough to wait out the VOC's growth could buy their shares for generational wealth. Still it remained a tiny cherry on a huge cake, and the Dutch remained the world's greatest sea trader until the 1790s, thanks to it's dominance of the European trade.
They seem REALLY similar, same topics, same cities, same history, even similar graphics but i don't think they are carbon copies. Without watching back to back it's hard to say but yea they seem like 95% identical
Why should it be mentioned? The Dutch had an exceptional big part in the European trade and putting the modern into the modern early period and a tiny part of the slavetrade. They only gave up their objection to the transatlantic slavetrade in 1638 when they were already well past half their golden age. It was economicall irrelevant, only morally.
I turned it off after the narrator said "After the protestant victory" not so much that i care about that in particular but it shows some really heavy bias.
Narrator’s audio is slightly muffled and frequently overwhelmed by the volume of the music and background sounds. I thought this is what audio engineers were for?
Why is this one guy on this program speaking only French? It is very irritating. Seems like somrone could have translatted his voice for the program. Thumbs down for this video. Love the content but i am lazy and just want to veg and watch. Not have to read sub captions.
Life expectancy in New York is better than norm in bible, 70 years old, but far less than promised norm, 100 years old, Isaiah 65:20. New York's small recreational spaces, about 20 times smaller than Canadian cities for example, and lack of traffic free cycling, 0 kilometers New York, versus 70 km round trip, Canadian cities, terrible crowds and diet ( see Iris Sommers "Bacteria and the Brain, UA-cam, why eating out stuffs you full of preservatives), long working and commuting hours, 3rd world STD rates, don't seem to make much difference in life expectancy. I guess that shows people are really adaptable and that New York provides pretty good lifestyle/ health style. Still, do architects have any role as we move towards blue zones in general, 100 year life expectancy. As the Great Canadian said: Where's the puck going.
🤯 So interesting. So in- depth. So well produced and expertly crafted. Loved this doc! Thanks!

Who is Painter of the painting about 5:40 minutes into the video?
Stavanger is in Norway, not Sweden (even though Norway was a part of Danmark at this point).
It was interesting. Ok
The creation of the VOC is a wonderful topic, thanks
