She optioned for a 5.7l gen 3, 6 speed with lsd and FE2 suspension, I don't know why she didn't just get the SS, but I'm glad she did, I still have and love this car 14 years and an extra 100k (now 140 000) and she's staying with me.

VT & VX's were not mechanically identical
VX Series 2's brought out a whole new rear suspension that prior VT - VX Series 1's suffered "squatting out" all too often.
Spring & shock absorber rates were different.
    Anti-roll bars were different sizes.
Braking system was marginally different but vastly improved with the introduction of Bosch 5.3
Along with VX's having much better build quality again over the VT
VX & VX Series 2's had 4 airbags on higher trim models (dual front & side front airbags)
Mechanically the 3.8L's from VT - VX couldn't be anymore different 😂😂😂
VT's had a 2 piece rear main seal, different intake manifold, different pistons, etc
VX's brought out new pistons, faster computer, new intake manifold, new single piece rear main seal, etc etc
Basic architecture was similar but internally different. Transmissions were improved significantly over the VT when it comes to responsiveness, programming, etc

I still dislike holden. And I have a supercharged vt Calais.
Supercharged and still just keeps up with a Barra. 😢6 cylinder motors can’t be compared. V8s tho holden slapped in that. Iv owned a lot of both and barras take wayyy to much shit

The operative word being "perceived" to be superior to the Falcon, due to a ridiculously biased Murdoch media campaign, they went well on the race track but on the road they are rubbish, the VS was a better car to drive

Having owned a VS and a VT at the same time, I'll admit the VS seemed to pack a bigger punch and the car we preferred to drive.
